You would think! Apple is behind the time. This standard has been in Europe for several years; even Samsung had a USB C last year. Apple makes this out to be an epiphany, but it really isn't. It is more about versatility, which seems new but is behind the times. Perhaps if Steve Jobs were alive, we would have had USB C years back on iPhones.

people seem to praise apple for switching to usb-c for the latest model of iphone, but is the switch that big of a deal? for the regular and plus, i'd say not really and here's why.
for older phones you could just use a lightning hub and it should work just as well as using a usb-c hub on the iphone 15.
you could always use a lightning to hdmi to connect to external display (or airplay) and use blutooth to connect mouse and keyboard.
the only real advantage of usb-c is being able to transmit 4K video to an external display, but the usb c on the iphone 15 only supports usb 2 speed, which is too slow for 4k content.

Pretty much everything in this video can be done within the apple ecosystem with any iPhone. USB C just makes it more straight forward, but I've been using my apple tv as a big monitor for my iPhones and Ipads for years with air play. Connecting BT keyboards, mice and controllers to play Xbox cloud gaming since day one. Using dongles to use external USB and SD cards. Only real benefit atm is using external memory for photography which is pretty nice but not a real game changer to what we already had. I do welcome USB C, but it's not like we were tech capped before.

What I'd really like to see is video hand-off, e.g. when I plug in my XReal AR glasses, which now work plugged directly into the USB-C port, the main screen of the phone doesn't need to be on the entire time as well. If I'm on a flight or something, I don't want my seat neighbor to necessarily be able to watch on the iPhone's screen what I'm watching in my glasses as well. This could actually create a security issue, as well as being a redundant power drain to run both monitors at the same time. If there were a way to make whatever monitor one is using with the iPhone a separate display, instead of merely a mirrored display, that would be amazing.

Thank you Sheldon. Thank you for your research, your trial and error and your patience in responding to almost everyone who has messaged you here. I only have a couple questions.
    1. Have you tested the video recording with the Western Digital WD BLACK SN850X? I’m interested in that drive for my pro Res recording.
    2. Did the Samsung 980 pro pro get hot during the ProRes recording? I’m on the hunt for a cool running NVMe SSD because a new product for video recording by Smallrig where the NVMe SSD goes in the handle. so I’m contemplating using the coolest running NME drive or perhaps even an M2 SATA drive with the MB key. Can you tell me if your drive ran hot?

Without, for example, a DEX-like mode, you can't call this basic functionality powerful. I can easily connect mouse, keyboard over BT to my iPhone, you also could do this the wired-way before, too, just by using an adapter.

Lightning was nice as it predates Type-C, but see? You see? Type-C was the baller connector this whole time. Android has had most of these features for ages now. It meant students could still write their essays at home and all they needed was an extra $100 worth of peripherals, and Android devices that don't support Dex can still use Chromecast.

This isn't really ground breaking or anything to be excited about. I'm not saying that because Samsung Dex exist. But really because Apple has allowed that way back when if anyone remembers the dongle with a HDMI port. I had one back in the day when I was using my iphone 4 to use netflix and hulu when i didn't have internet service set up. What is really the highlight is the added accessibility options to connect a bluetooth mouse, despite not having native supports... something Andriod has been on top of for nearly a decade now. Having a USB-C port on the iPhone 15 is playing catch up but still several paces behind.

I would like to see the iPhone used as a computer. The problem is that not many screens will allow for vertical screen with an iPhone attached. There’s apps like Apple Music that are only opened in vertical. So, please explore this on a regular monitor because I’ll buy the 15 tomorrow if it works well. Why Apple doesn’t have their own DEX mode is beyond me.

  • @monsieurpapou

Wow, that might be the most interesting and useful video I've seen about the iPhone 15 until now! 👋
I would have 2 more questions concerning USB-C and bluetooth connectivity though and maybe you could help me to solve that out..
    1) first, the interest I could see in it is the fact that (as I already do with my iPads) I can plug in a USB C / USB A adapter which itself hosts the sound card that lets me dictate with the microphone specially designed for voice recognition, attached to the pipette on my respirator. I have muscular dystrophy and typing on my iPhone - even the Mini - is proving increasingly complicated. I'd like to be able to dictate more easily on this device, as I do with the other devices in my Apple ecosystem. Will the port make this possible in your opinion? For the same reason, and since voice recognition is resource-hungry, I'm thinking that the new chip could perhaps be an additional asset in terms of recognition reliability.
    2) however, and this will be my last question, even with iOS 17, I still can't get my trackpad to work as an iPhone control interface, even though the menus seem to allow it (just as it's possible on iPads). Do you have any idea why this might be? You showed on your video that it was possible to use an external bluetooth mouse to control the iPhone. Did you have the chance to test it with a Magic Trackpad too?
As a matter of fact, without being able to control it, there's little point in being able to dictate more easily on my phone...

In the first video, you tested a different audio interface. Motu M2 I think it was? It didn’t work, but it seemed to be because there wasn’t enough power to run it. This time, you had the powered USB hub in the picture, and it worked - but with a different device. Rather than credit the additional power available to the bus, you say it’s device dependent? Unless you did some offscreen testing and didn’t tell us, that doesn’t track. Try the Motu with the powered hub!

    • @beardfm
      @beardfm  ปีที่แล้ว

Yes I did lots of off camera testing, which I’ve learned to do it all on camera in the future! The Motu works with the hub, but not alone. Focusrite Vocaster and Scarlett work alone or with the hub. Then I tested a MixPre-3 and that does not work either way.

I go camping a lot and I project my s22 to a projector with each trip. with Samsung phones there is absolutely no restrictions on what you can mirror. On IOS there is. No ESPN ! No HULU TV. It will prompt a restriction message and out put a black screen but with audio lol. Thats all I know of and I'm sure there is more apps that are restricted . I'll miss no restrictions on Samsungs.
