03:40 no, recording and writing audio at the same time takes not much more than 2-3 mb/s of bandwidth. You usually record with 256-320 or lossless up to 1411 kbit/s

Imagine apple allow multi-tasking when connected to external display, it can work as a developer machine, with editor, browser and terminal all running side by side.
Thanks for the video. Great content. Do you mind showing a video transferring your photos and videos to a external SSD or HDD hard drive (not a usb stick or sd card).
How’s is the “desktop” experience and gaming experience with the standard iPhone 15? I have a 13pro and not gonna lie, for the money saving I’m seriously considering going to the regular 15 over the Pro. Thanks.
It can mirror display and connect to controllers like the 15, but frame rate and smoothness definitely take a hit. It's playable, but may be a little frustrating.
Lightning was nice as it predates Type-C, but see? You see? Type-C was the baller connector this whole time. Android has had most of these features for ages now. It meant students could still write their essays at home and all they needed was an extra $100 worth of peripherals, and Android devices that don't support Dex can still use Chromecast.
This isn't really ground breaking or anything to be excited about. I'm not saying that because Samsung Dex exist. But really because Apple has allowed that way back when if anyone remembers the dongle with a HDMI port. I had one back in the day when I was using my iphone 4 to use netflix and hulu when i didn't have internet service set up. What is really the highlight is the added accessibility options to connect a bluetooth mouse, despite not having native supports... something Andriod has been on top of for nearly a decade now. Having a USB-C port on the iPhone 15 is playing catch up but still several paces behind.
I would like to see the iPhone used as a computer. The problem is that not many screens will allow for vertical screen with an iPhone attached. There’s apps like Apple Music that are only opened in vertical. So, please explore this on a regular monitor because I’ll buy the 15 tomorrow if it works well. Why Apple doesn’t have their own DEX mode is beyond me.
Interesting, I use a DJI microphone and the assumption was that if I put a hub on my iPhone 15, I can plug in the microphone and SSD. It's nice to see that someone has tried it. Thanks!
Would be curious to see how it would handle a regular monitor plugged into the usb hub and of course with power applied. Also, confirm the cables were the higher end braided cables designed to trx power, video etc. ?
Great video, thanks! I just got the iPhone 15 plus, with the usb speed (USB 2.0, up to 480 Mbps) could I record directly to a SD card 4K/60? You also tried recording 4K/60, but only 18 min, does it depend on the storage the SD has? Thanks again
Wow, that might be the most interesting and useful video I've seen about the iPhone 15 until now! 👋 I would have 2 more questions concerning USB-C and bluetooth connectivity though and maybe you could help me to solve that out.. 1) first, the interest I could see in it is the fact that (as I already do with my iPads) I can plug in a USB C / USB A adapter which itself hosts the sound card that lets me dictate with the microphone specially designed for voice recognition, attached to the pipette on my respirator. I have muscular dystrophy and typing on my iPhone - even the Mini - is proving increasingly complicated. I'd like to be able to dictate more easily on this device, as I do with the other devices in my Apple ecosystem. Will the port make this possible in your opinion? For the same reason, and since voice recognition is resource-hungry, I'm thinking that the new chip could perhaps be an additional asset in terms of recognition reliability. 2) however, and this will be my last question, even with iOS 17, I still can't get my trackpad to work as an iPhone control interface, even though the menus seem to allow it (just as it's possible on iPads). Do you have any idea why this might be? You showed on your video that it was possible to use an external bluetooth mouse to control the iPhone. Did you have the chance to test it with a Magic Trackpad too? As a matter of fact, without being able to control it, there's little point in being able to dictate more easily on my phone...
2:48 - not allowed probably due to heat management concerns, just like in professional cameras, and also there are workflow issues, because recording that amount of data normally requires storage hot swapping.
I told an iPhone user about this a few years ago when Dex became a thing. He said it was pointless. Now he's praising the feature because the iPhone has a "desktop mode" of sorts. The cycle continues....
In the first video, you tested a different audio interface. Motu M2 I think it was? It didn’t work, but it seemed to be because there wasn’t enough power to run it. This time, you had the powered USB hub in the picture, and it worked - but with a different device. Rather than credit the additional power available to the bus, you say it’s device dependent? Unless you did some offscreen testing and didn’t tell us, that doesn’t track. Try the Motu with the powered hub!
Yes I did lots of off camera testing, which I’ve learned to do it all on camera in the future! The Motu works with the hub, but not alone. Focusrite Vocaster and Scarlett work alone or with the hub. Then I tested a MixPre-3 and that does not work either way.
I'm switching from an s22 ultra to an iPhone 15 pro max soon. I'm a UX designer and I design on a mac. I'm tired of using third party cloud storage just for moc ups and images. I need Airdrop I go camping a lot and I project my s22 to a projector with each trip. with Samsung phones there is absolutely no restrictions on what you can mirror. On IOS there is. No ESPN ! No HULU TV. It will prompt a restriction message and out put a black screen but with audio lol. Thats all I know of and I'm sure there is more apps that are restricted . I'll miss no restrictions on Samsungs.

I remember watching a similar video about 10 years ago on the galaxy note 2 and it was doing this way more easy they were able to get full display in landscape and plus multitasking with multiple apps open at once on screen
Could I connect a USB-B to USB-C cable from my Korg B2 Digital Piano to iPhone 15 Pro, and use voice memos to record digital piano audio into my iPhone?
wow, maybe? I think that should work.
Amazing video Stephen 👍 was wondering about a lot of things you tested
> more powerful than expected
> capable of plugging in basic peripherals
Without, for example, a DEX-like mode, you can't call this basic functionality powerful. I can easily connect mouse, keyboard over BT to my iPhone, you also could do this the wired-way before, too, just by using an adapter.
Imagine apple allow multi-tasking when connected to external display, it can work as a developer machine, with editor, browser and terminal all running side by side.
He summarized my dreams in this video. Heck yeah!
This is the most informative video I've seen about gen 15 iphones.
Regular iPhone 15 only runs at USB 2.0 speeds. Pro models can run at usb 3 speeds up to 10 Gbits/sec
You might try a security key like Yubikey or Google’s Titan.
Thank you for the wireless mic set up attempt I had that same question
I recorded separately to an iPad mini for my Sonos Move 2 video! (Filmed all on iPhone 15 Pro Max to external SSD)
Yes, you can do a hub and Wireless GO; you need to add power to the equation.
Pleeease try to find a way to max out 10gbps with flash drive or external NVME
Trying!
@@beardfmyour my hero. I was looking for someone like you
I hope you can show us many ways on how to use magsafe on the iPhone
I actually have a video on some of my favorite MagSafe accessories here! th-cam.com/video/OgK_orvjW-M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ZwAp8KviwcPPk5g2
Usb C works with my TCL NXTwear S glasses, and you can use a rokid hub power the glasses and charge at the same time
I want to see if it will work with USB-C DAC's and output over optical digital full hi-Res audio 24 bit/192kHz. That would be awesome.
A small nitpick, great video!
MB -> Megabyte
MiB -> Mebibyte
Mb -> Megabit
Yes! I regret misspeaking on that one 🤦🏼♂️
Dual Shock 4 controllers work over USB. Just plug and play
Can it only be hooked up to a studio display? Or can it be made to work with other monitors?
😱Got my S23 Ultra all the way baby 👊🏾
Wow, the iPhone 15 is so great and the Video is fantastic. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
How long have I been using Dex for... {checking notes...}
This was a great video.
Can you please test a Midi keyboard🎹 to see if it works ?
Any models you recommend? Don't have one currently 😅
Interesting,
I use a DJI microphone and the assumption was that if I put a hub on my iPhone 15, I can plug in the microphone and SSD.
It's nice to see that someone has tried it.
Thanks!
iPhone 15 pro and max has thunderbolt, they've the bandwidth
Welcome!
Would be curious to see how it would handle a regular monitor plugged into the usb hub and of course with power applied. Also, confirm the cables were the higher end braided cables designed to trx power, video etc. ?
I used Apple's braided cable and Thunderbolt cables for connected to Display and audio devices. A regular HDMI monitor behaves the same way.
Amazing Stephen - I'll go share this our Pi group!
appreciate that!
I believe MB/s is megabytes per second, not megabits.
I would have 2 more questions concerning USB-C and bluetooth connectivity though and maybe you could help me to solve that out..
Stephen, I also got my MX Keyboard paired with my iPhone 15 Pro Max as well.
You could already connect Bluetooth mice to iPhones. I’ve been able to do it on my XS
Question - what about external video source for zoom calls, etc?
2:48 - not allowed probably due to heat management concerns, just like in professional cameras, and also there are workflow issues, because recording that amount of data normally requires storage hot swapping.
Can you back up your iPhone photos from library straight to external hard drive ?
Not seamlessness. You would need to export photos you select using the Share Sheet and save them to the Files app
I hope they add stage manager for external displays like on iPad in the next iOS
Multiple comments on that!
Welcome to being able to do everything I've been doing on my Samsung Galaxy phone years now. Even better there's Dex.
I'm switching from an s22 ultra to an iPhone 15 pro max soon. I'm a UX designer and I design on a mac. I'm tired of using third party cloud storage just for moc ups and images. I need Airdrop
I go camping a lot and I project my s22 to a projector with each trip. with Samsung phones there is absolutely no restrictions on what you can mirror. On IOS there is. No ESPN ! No HULU TV. It will prompt a restriction message and out put a black screen but with audio lol. Thats all I know of and I'm sure there is more apps that are restricted . I'll miss no restrictions on Samsungs.
You are great. This is a great review. See you on the next Netcast with Leo Laporte !
Appreciate it! And would love to be on MacBreak Weekly again!
