I just received my new iPhone 15 (iOS 17.0.3) and connected it to the LG 24 Ultrafine display using the original cable. The iPhone immediately beeped and began charging, but there was no image on the display. I use the cable and this display with my MacBook daily. Appriciate any suggestion. Thanks

This has certainly got me considering changing to the 15 Pro from the 14. I like to do some vlogging and the option to store direct to an external storage device really appeals especially as I take a lot of video whilst on extended trips including backpacking and often find the storage capability on the phone is reached. 😊So thank you for your video. Definitely thought provoking. I appreciate several of the comments refer to what an Android phone can already do and I don’t doubt that but I don’t want to change to an Android phone.
This is the best phone news I've heard in a long time. I go with Sony phones and I hate that whenever I need a cable at work or out and about everyone has a lightning charger. USB-C/thunderbolt is so much better and universal charging is very important imo. We have standardized ports for a reason. If Apple brought back the headphone jack I'd consider giving them a try again.

Since I won't be upgrading from my iPhone 14 I can't take advantage of USB-C accessories, but they work just fine on my iPad Mini 6.
I am guessing but I think they never built usb 3.0 controllers on the older chips. Since they reused older chips with the regular 15 models, they don’t have an onboard controller to push the higher speeds. Using binned versions of the new chips like they used until last year would have been the way to go. But here we are 😅

I agree. But I did hear that the A17 Pro chip uses the same USB controller as the M series chips so it could support thunderbolt 4 but Apple chose not to enable it on the iPhones.

Thanks! This was very helpful. It gave me some reasons to consider upgrading from my 14PM to a 15PM where I previously hadn't really seen any reason, except perhaps for the improved optical zoom capability.
Why's that?
- Mouse & keyboard support you get over Bluetooth (never occurred me over cable... who would want that on a phone anyway)
- Ethernet connection over USB-C: it's a phone with a phone OS. The Wi-Fi is plenty fast even for PCs, this is not a RTX4090 gaming rig...
- microphone: there are plenty for lightning. Webcam.... for what? What's the use
The only real benefit is to transfer those huge video files

You have to go to Accessibility and change a setting there to get the mouse to work right,
For some reason to use a Mouse on iPhones you have to turn on Assistive Touch.
To enable mouse you need to turn guided access on in settings

The iPhone 15 and 15 plus have 2.0 speed because of the A16 bionic chip. It doesn’t have the USB 3 controller since it was made for last year’s lightning port.
It’s the only weak point for me of the iphone 15. Otherwise it is really excellent.
I would be curious if there is a way to stream video over USB-C to an external SSD while also supporting an external USB-C wired microphone input.I can see this being a desired use-case.

Wow. I never knew how far my Samsung phone has come until I watched this video. Samsung Dex and all the USB-C capabilities Samsung has makes this video look like Samsung RandD from 5 years ago.
My understanding is in order to use the USB-C standard, or any of the USB standards, the manufacturer must comply with the specifications as defined. But, I see they don't have to meet the maximum speeds possible with USB-C as evidenced by the iPh 15 USB-A speed which is what I have. Fortunately I have little need to export or import files to my iPhone.

Hey you can actually have a mouse pointer on the iPhone, you just need to enable Assistive Touch in the settings.

The problem with iPhone 15 plus USB-C implementation is it uses the old A16 chip. That means you don’t have dedicated USB controller. So it’s basically lighting port disguised as a USB-C.
What does dedicated USB Controller mean?

Yes but not very efficiently. You would have to select a group of photos, hit the share button and choose save to files. Nothing automatic.

Hmm. I would start with. Different cable to see if that is causing it.
The reason the non pro have usb2 speeds is because they’re using the old cpu chip which has the old usb2.0 controller it’s not a redesigned chip. The new cup has an updated controller

Normal 15 usb is slow because they have the chip from the iPhone 14 which did not have usb c capabilities. Pretty straightforward
Why? Because A16 is an old chip which was not supposed to support usb 3. That’s why. Pretty sure next year base models will have the usb 3 as well
the answer is simple the processeor a16 is only capable of usb2 speeds that's why, maybe next year with a17 iPhone 16 may support higher speed but they named a17pro that might be for some reason so let's see

How do you copy large HD ProRes files on iPhone 15PM to a Mac?
The fastest way is to export them, or send them to an SSD, then connect the SSD to the Mac. For some reason when you connect an iPhone 15 directly to a Mac, you still get USB two speeds.
@@JerrySchulze Jerry, thanks for this. I finally spent silly money on Apple's Thunderbolt 4 cable. (ouch) I connected the 15PM directly to my Mac Pro 2019. I used Image Capture App on the Mac and copying ProRes HD (not 4K) footage on the iPhone 15PM to Mac was quite fast. Definitely near 1GB/sec speed. I then tried one of the Amazon 40GB cables, and they were not as fast, head scatcher as to why.

Great video as always. Have you tried connecting the iPhone 15 Pro to a computer to test backup and sync speeds? I’m not having any luck in getting 10Gbps speeds despite having the fast speeds connecting to an SSD as a USB host.
SON of a gun! you are correct, I cannot get more then about 70MB/s. Where is the limitation? It isn't the internal phone storage speed.
I think the iPhone 15 Pro is fast when it is the USB host. It is slow when the Mac or PC is the host. I’ve tried so many cables as well and no luck on making it faster on either platform.
I'll be going from an s22 ultra to a iphone 15 pro max soon. Keep in mind ios has major restrictions on what can play to an external display or projector. I go camping a lot and With Samsung phones you can project sporting events like UFC and ESPN app to a projector. There are absolutely no restrictions on what you mirror on samsung. On iPhone you will see a restriction message and it will only output a black screen with audio only lol. Thats one of the things I'll miss the most when I switch to ios. I wish apple wouldn't restrict like that.

For the first time I think a standard iPhone is a better deal compared to previous Pro Lineup, despite the fact iphone 15 does not have 120hz display, the another benefits of the usb C can make the decision very harder when compared to last years which Pro version always was better compared e to next generation normal ones.

the thing i hate most about my iphone is when connected to external display it doesn't adapt to the display it adds black bars. i rather the iphone show side black bars and the monitor filled up fully.

The 15pro has the A17 chip with the10Gb USB controller. The A16 (iPhone 15) was designed for lightning aka USB-2 speeds. Something tells me that not switching all phones to the A17 chip saved more than a few pennies...
