When I think of keto, I think of high fat. I am still watching so maybe you mention fat grams later in the video. I have heard it is 70% fat, 20% protein and 10% carbs Exciting to watch and learn from your experience.

I'm sure you know, but in case you don't just make sure you follow your cycle while doing keto. I did keto and had some negative effects because of hormonal changes - only when i took into consideration that my body needs different nutrients at different times of my cycle was it that i was successful at keto. Dr Mindy Pelz was a really good source of information for me.

Love your series here. I suffer PTSD and resistant suicidal depression from military and police experiences. It's been over 15 years now, and never got better..... @@davinadavina1331I think it's a typo I think what he meant to say is treatment resistant suicidal depression which is a very common side effect of military PTSD. I'm also a veteran that has PTSD but I also have schizoaffective disorder which adds an entire layer on top of the PTSD. When I'm having a PTSD episode my antipsychotics don't really do much and I have to mix an anti-anxiety medication which is very sedating. I was diagnosed with PTSD and bipolar disorder before I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder.

I've been keto, now mostly carnivore for 3.5 years now. My advice for beginners: do keto the best you can, the best you can afford; don't allow the perfect to be the enemy of the good. When you are ready & want to improve, just continue to do the best you can. Imperfect, dirty keto is better than none at all as long as you have a real desire to improve. Different people will experience different results. I'm an old duffer now so I'm upping my protein to improve muscle mass which is much needed for seniors.

Lauren I am such a fan and have been following you for years.
Please use appropriate skepticism when applying this diet. Your diet coach has mentioned that there have been studies finding this or that effect of gluten or seed oils but there is FAR from a scientific consensus on her claims - you can almost always find a different study saying the exact about diets that include gluten and seed oils. Whenever someone is claiming that something is a golden ticket - especially based on a handful of cherry-picked studies - be wary.
I do hope this diet helps you, but be open to the idea that it might not - and please remember that most nutritional science is imperfect and influenced by trends far more than most medical interventions. Peace to you in the new year!

Keto is not really a "diet" but a dietary lifestyle, one that you will live after you have lost your desired weight and will, as a result, keep that weight off. Don't obsess about your cholesterol levels such as your total cholesterol and your ldl when the most important cholesterol marker is your Triglyceride/HDL ratio with under 1.5 being desirable. For years pre-keto I had trouble getting my HDL level up to a normal 40 and it is now 80. My TRG was never high, but now at 60 my ration is under 1.0 which is very good. If keto is so bad for cholesterol, then why did my triglyceride level drop and my HDL lever double?

Thank you for sharing. I am really interested in your keto journey and following along as I am on my own for major depression and chronic fatigue and other issues...I know you are followed by a keto coach, and others, which is great, so I am really here to learn...unfortunately for me 20 NET grams is not cutting it, in terms of ketosis, so I am trying to do the harder version with a 20 TOTAL grams of carbs, which I am finding really really tough, because I am insulin resistent as well, and apparently anything we eat, even the fiber stimulates insulin, so I am trying to go more hardcore, hopefully at least at the beginning. the garlic does have carbs in it (at least that's what the chronometer app says) the avocados have A LOT of carbs, even though they are healthy fats and I love them, if I eat 1/2 of one of those that takes up a lot of grams for my day, it all adds up...I cannot eat a lot of veggies unfortunately, as it adds up, and I also really love them...and had to totally cut out the fruit...I am worried as this does not seem sustainable for me, I am curious about how you will be doing this because it seems like you get to eat so much more than me...Also for MCT oil, I was advised to get the C8-C10 one, that is the good one that really helps spike up your ketones. Curious to know what your coach thinks about that? wishing you all the best on this, lets hope we all benefit from it!

Do not allow eating a perfect keto diet to be the enemy of the good. Do keto the best you can. Don't obsess about MCT oil or being at 20 net carbs/day. The recommended Standard American Diet recommends up to 300 grams of carbs/day so you will be doing 1/10 of that. At your next physical, request a fasting insulin test (not usually given) and that will indicate whether you are still insulin resistant. Be patient, I got most of my keto benefits in less than a year and lost my fatty liver as well along with the weight which I have kept off for over 3 years now.

Definitely experiment a little bit with your carb allowance as you progress deeper into keto, especially since you're tracking your ketone levels. 20g/day is awesome, some people tolerate 30g/day, and some even can reach 50g/day and still remain in ketosis (although typically men due to just physiology/size/mass. Adding in some weightlifting will allow you to tolerate more carbs as your muscles will soak up carbs as glycogen. Avoiding adding to your livers glycogen stores is more important for keto than adding to your muscles glycogen. Glycogen in liver = no ketosis, glycogen in muscles = ketosis. Foods that more typically go straight to your liver are things containing fructose. Your body does have a system in place to provide glucose for your body through gluconeogenesis which converts protein into glucose for maintaining things like blood glucose levels and refilling muscle glycogen stores. It's slower than consuming carbs for these means but perfectly adequate depending on activity level and the type of activity.
*Whisps:* definitively look into making those yourselves, it's quite simple and a lot more cost effective.
*Raspberries:* Costco sells a very nice frozen mixed berry blend that is quite affordable that is 10g carbs per 1 and a 1/4 cup (140g). 2kg for $20
*MCT Oil:* Great stuff, but be careful when you start adding it into your diet, some people can experience some gastrointestinal distress from too much which causes very quick (very) trips to the washroom, speaking from experience and a tossed pair of skivvies. To start, maximum 1 TBSP/day. My advice is start with a tsp and see how you react. You will adapt to it and eventually it will be a non-issue.
*Primal Kitchen Ranch*: Created by Mark Sisson of marksdailyapple.com This man is an excellent source for information on keto diets, and among many other things diet related and overall mental wellness/mental health. A good man whose work is non-influenced by external parties.
*Homemade Egg "tortilla" wraps:* These bad boys are super cheap to make at home. The most expensive ingredient in these will probably be food gelatin(pork/beef). I don't quite agree with Nicole Laurent's statement of "you not wanting something like this eventually and will eat everything out of a bowl". A big part about grain based food is the texture it adds to the meal. Being able to eat a restricted diet and not experience *palate fatigue* will be important in maintaining this long run. If you want a keto tortilla wrap occasionally, then you damn well will eat one.
*Vegetables and carbs:* As you become more and more keto adapted, your tolerance for carbohydrates and their ability to take you out of ketosis will become less of an issue. You may even get to a point where you may not really consider the amount of carbs from veggies to such a stringent degree. Cheat meals become less of an issue, and in some cases people are able to take multiple days of carb intake and still find themselves keto adapted after (typically quite muscle related athletic folk). A carb refeed may indeed become an important part of you maintaining this diet in the long run, especially considering you are into athletics. There is something my friends and I have called "The Hunger", which we experience after extended periods in carb depleted diets where no matter how much fat we're stuffing our faces with, we still have this giant hole in our guts (The Hunger) that can be remedied with a nice refeed meal, or a whole refeed day, Sometimes its a single meal, sometimes we're talking hundreds of carbs. Although athletics wise we are much more into weightlifting then endurance training so your experience will most likely vary.
*SUSHI, BABY*: Rice is mostly composed of glucose, and is basically free off all the compounds you're avoiding grains for. You got The Hunger? You want a refeed that isn't blown out of proportion with a side of diet related guilt? Rice. Homemade rice pudding made with a sugar free sweetener (Erythritol/Stevia) and cream. Sweet potato/yams, also another glucose rich/low fructose food source. Both of these foods can be used to create dessert type dishes. So, if you feel you need a cheat meal, start here and see how you respond. Best case scenario is you have this meal after a great workout. White rice though, you want it stripped of everything possible. Although rice is gluten free, there may be other compounds, just as whole grain wheat has other components than just gluten that may cause a reaction.

Made it through most of it but ended up dropping out due to severe burnout that lasted years. I may finish it one day. I'll be tuning in occasionally to see how this goes for you. Good luck!

I'm curious about what you do with your meds while trying this new keto lifestyle; do you keep taking them as normal, reduce them gradually, or go completely off them?
Interesting to follow along this journey! 🙂

Keep in mind that when eating keto and lowest carbs, you'll actually eat less and feel fuller longer. I especially found that true when eliminating wheat/gluten grains from my diet. I do not care to eat anything with wheat/gluten in my diet again. I love my brain so much more!!!

    • @stevec3872
      @stevec3872 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Absolutely true! Eat until you are full and satiated and since a keto dietary lifestyle keeps your glucose steady and low it will not be spiking after eating a lot of carbs and then crashing in 2 hours making you want to eat again and again. Wash, rinse, and repeat your way towards poor health and type 2 diabetes.

100%! I buy pretty much the same foods on a loop and I eat less of everything. I think keto is expensive at first and then cheaper. The longer you're satiated the less you need to snack. I only snack occasionally and only eat at mealtimes. It's so freeing!

I think it's great you intend to help viewers who can't afford high price groceries because it's tough eating well on Keto. It can be done but it isn't easy and it's important everyone has the ability to at least try this protocol. Money spent on meds could be spent buying groceries so millions making anecdotal claims it worked but I couldn't afford it could change the politics between government and big pharma. Our government subsidizes $1000's of dollars each patient and the $1000's spent on meds can buy an incredible amount of healthy food while saving a small fortune each month. My out of pocket expenses if I had to pay for all my meds myself would have easily cost me over two grand so this could eliminate mental illness while saving untold billions of dollars.
Your nutritionist is amazing! Grains wreck me when I cheat and eat them. I love the fact you're doing this for others.

You don't have to be cruel and violent to animals to have a ketogenic diet. The animals we create are morally equivalent to our own children and are owed the same unconditional love and protection. The experiences of animals are real and matter. Their suffering is identical in nature to your own. It harms us when we take pleasure in cruelty and violence.

You can only do what you can do. If you are interested in the ketogenic dietary lifestyle, just do it the best you can. Imperfect keto is better than none at all. Then if you reach a point where you want to improve how you are doing keto, just continue to do it the best you are able to do it.

I saw this documentary, maybe on vice ? Years ago.. about a young man who had something like severe Crohn’s disease symptoms . He just couldn’t eat anything. He finally tried to eat nothing but plain raw fresh blood and I think plain raw fresh meat . It was so helpful for him and he was so much better to totally better after this diet change.
I also am doing muuuuuuuch better with as little gluten as possible. Though I still flare up with debilitating inflammation so I wonder why… maybe inaccurate labeling . Maybe it’s the frozen or dry or canned food being too processed ? Idk yet.
When I was growing up… I hated hot showers , loved coldddd showers, and … I did not like starches much… too dry. No cake, no rice, no noodles, no bread, no cereal. Yuck! Over time, I trained myself to like them, and now I have to untrained myself from that!
Thaaaank you for sharing this journey of ketosis to only keto diet in depth. 🙏

When me and my partner first started keto I got the keto flu and she didn’t. There was a moment where my body was looking for glucose and had to change to a different fuel source. I felt dreadful but I was at work with no energy and then my energy levels went through the roof. Make sure you are hydrated because water bonds to carbs and if you don’t have the carbs you lose electrolytes very quickly. This is all anecdotal but staying hydrated was a big deal for me personally. I decided to go fully carnivore but it’s better than keto.
