I was driving home from work and a big red warning light saying 'STOP' Oil Pressure' and the red oil can symbol, suddenly appeared on my dash along with some loud beeps!. Naturally I thought the worst had happened and that maybe the oil pump had failed, although there certainly hadn't been any initial indications of such so I bit the bullet and drove the short distance back home. No engine noises or rattling and engine running completely normal. My first plan was to find the oil pressure switch/sensor to take it out so I can take a pressure test, easier said than done due to its very hard to reach location (behind the engine and tucked in above the oil filter). After a lot of effort (and swearing), I managed to unplug the wire from the sensor and immediately I could see oil inside both the plug and the sensor which actually gave me a huge relief because it was pretty obvious that it was the reason for the sensor failing. It makes sense that if the oil can leak through the sensor, it won't then be under enough pressure to keep the electrical contact together. Once I replaced the sensor for a brand new one (not expensive), the warnings went away and haven't come back so all is now good. If in any doubt, do get the pressure checked and DON'T drive at the risk of damaging your engine. I was just lucky.
