  • One of the skills that we teach our puppies really early in their lives is how to "drop it". That's why in this video, I'm going to show you how to teach your puppy to drop things. Puppies explore the world with their mouths, so it's a great skill to teach your young dog, to avoid disaster, but also to demonstrate some leadership for your young and impressionable puppy. It's a fairly simple process and as you'll see, your puppy will find this exercise to be lots of fun!

      Does not work with my labrador puppy. He's always onto me whenever I have treats no matter how odorless they may be. He's too distracted by the smell to give it a go at his favorite toy. He just keeps sniffing me all over.

    I literally started drop it training with my chocolate lab using treats as a trade and she got it right away, she now will play fetch and will grab the ball, bring it over, drop it and wait for the treat 😋 she now does it on her own without me saying drop it and if she has like a sock or some kind of cloth in her mouth and it's still in her teeth she shakes it out so it's on the ground then she gets a treat 🤗 so glad I got a lab, she's so clever

    Theoretically, I get it and like it. In reality, my pup just hangs on to the toy...even when it is completely still. He just hangs on and looks at me. So what do you do to get him to drop it initially?
    In the past, I would use food to tempt him to drop it...and then after a couple of successful drops, I would then use your method of verbal cue, correct action then reward.
    But at the next session, we were back to square 1 :|
    I also tried the suggestion from your other video (swapping toys) - but puppy got SUPER DUPER excited and hyped and lost all focus.

  • @sikentender9651

    I love this method! Although I have a REALLY smart dog and she remembers that I have treats in my hand so she doesn’t play enthusiastically. Every time I move my hand to my pocket she immediately drops the toy, so the command is void. Do you have any tips?

  • @TeslaNick2
    @TeslaNick2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Using the "dead toy" "out" can be hard with some tough dogs. I've had to brace the tug against my thigh and myself against a wall with strong dogs, otherwise I'm just an extra weight to swing around on the other end of the tug ! It's more like a wrestling match with some dogs and a serious work out !

    Doesn't work with my dog. He's a lab with a nose that can smell a treat a mile away. He knows when I have treats and when I don't. He doesn't listen when I don't have any treats.

    • @mialea8106
      @mialea8106 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      James Smith you need to associate treats with verbal praise and massage or petting and condition this for a while until the attention is enough

    • @lucasbiaggini
      @lucasbiaggini 4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I would also try mixing up between praise + treat and praise alone, so for example, after praising and giving him a treat, follow up with a couple times where you just praise him, even if you have a treat on you.

    • @luciferdern
      @luciferdern 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@utopiascents we had this exact problem and used crate training along with conditioning the word "No."
      We started like you trying to disengage but it didn't seem to stop the enthusiasm. Putting them in the crate til they calm down (and stopped whining) then trying again seemed to work with a verbal warning letting them know what they were doing was unacceptable.
      The added benefit is since training 'no' we can use it to get her to stop what she's doing from quite some distance.

    I feel like every pup are different when it comes to listening. While some treats work with my 16 week Lab like for potty training and walking besides me. Other commands I feel like she understands more with the tone or emotion of my voice. I use “let it go” for her to drop her toy and the word “go” I do a low-long sounding gooooo and she starts loosening up her toy. And for her to come I do a happy perky voice and she hurries up to me right away!

    I don’t know if you have or not but it would be really helpful to see a video all about how to deal with a pup who isn’t treat motivated at all. Milo is unbothered by treats when there are any toys present. I had to tech him sit using toys because treats just don’t hold his attention for more than a moment.

      Hi there, Anouks! It's entirely dependent on your puppy. Practice this a couple of times every day. Very quickly you'll start to see your puppy anticipating that food. When you see them dropping the toy immediately, make a big deal about it! They will have so much fun, and find so much reward in the process that they're likely to drop it quickly again the next time! Have fun with this exercise, and Happy Training! ~Ken

    Any suggestions for an older puppy that has a perfect 'drop it' with all toys (even when very excited!) but immediately swallows any socks/gloves that he finds when off-lead on walks. I've been wondering about telling him 'take it' and then training 'drop it' with a sock at home, but would it be bad to reinforce holding socks at all? Thank you for the great video though!

    • @teagc
      @teagc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure if this is the correct way to do it, but I was noticing the same thing. So we go on "walks" in the back yard and I purposefully let him find something interesting that's not something I gave him (a stick, etc). And I have my treat ready (when he's finally forgotten I have them in my pocket because the outside is more interesting). I say "leave it" he thinks abut it and drops the stick so I give him the treat. Not 100% there yet, but it's hard to fabricate the "unscripted" distractions.
      Funny enough, he's spit out 2 of his baby teeth after I said "leave it" since I saw him chewing on something! They just fell out in his mouth and he was playing with them!

  • @helend2820

    Hi Ken, thanks for another great video - the best I've seen on this topic, I am just teaching my 11 week old BC puppy how to do this. One question - how do you then end the tug game (and take the toy away and leave) in a positive/constructive way? Have them sit/down/settle and jackpot treats? Or leave them with a Kong or something they can settle down with?

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, Helen! I like this question. Part of the fun of playing fetch and playing tug is that it’s an engaging game that involves both of you. For some dogs a little toy drive needs to be built and for others there needs to be a focus on the shared experience. The ending of the game also has good training information built in. When the game is over, you can take the toy away and save it for next time you get to play. But the decision to end the game is entirely yours. Your puppy sees that valuable toy (thing) as something that’s lots of fun because it involves you. When you end the game, then your puppy can be given something to chew on, or they can go in their crate and rest up for the next play session. But you shouldn’t worry about them not having some pass time because you can’t play any longer. This is where you’re beginning to build an “off-switch” into your pup. You begin and end the game, and they learn that you’re really lots of fun, but it’s on your terms. This is a good lesson for your puppy to learn and it’s in a very non-confrontational way! I do have an older video where I do talk about playing tug that you may enjoy. Here’s a link: Dog Tug Game - How To Play Tug Of War With Your Dog - th-cam.com/video/q2Ln7fMUVE8/w-d-xo.html

I use my dogs to hunt. I never see a well rounded breed like Golden’s hunt. But Remember it is patients! don’t discipline right away. Take the time when they’re young like shown here. Starts right away ! 8-10 weeks. Good luck 🦮

  • @KSereci
    @KSereci 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Our 1 year old Aussie does this super well (we use the “out” command).
    What we’re struggling with is when we’re trying to get him to release something we DON’T have control over.
    So, if we’re having a toss with a frisbee or a larger tug he brings it back, we have a tug, and then he releases it when we have control over it and say “out.
    If it’s something smaller like a tennis ball, he knows it’s easier for him to have a bit of keep away because it’s much harder for us to get our hands directly on the smaller ball when it’s in his mouth, and tennis balls are his favorite; even if he does drop it when we ask, he’s clever and will try to control it with his paws since we’ve asked him to drop it from his mouth.
    Any tips about what our next steps should be? I’ve taken a look at the video describing training a pup to drop the ball in your hand, but I think there’s something we’d need to train in between. The out command isn’t at all reliable getting him to drop things out of his mouth if we don’t have our hands on them.
    Maybe more work on leave it with toys he really loves? But there seems to be another few steps that will help us get to dropping the ball (or other object) in our hands.
    Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated!!!
    Thanks for all you do! You’ve helped so much in training our pup and we love being part of this community!
    Cheers,
    Kristen, Quinn, & Jasper (the Aussie) from Portland, OR

      i wouldn't worry about making him drop his tennis ball - something that's a game for him
      work on building drop it for other things that aren't nearly as important and fun to him, and simulate it with perhaps some high value things items you actually might need him to drop. but there's no reason to make fetch a purely obedience game, because it's for fun. this is all assuming your dog is a house pet

    If you train your dog with treats. Once you see that they have learn the command you have to immediately start leaning them off the treats while reinforcing the command during daily life. Do this with every command. Also train your dog on your walks. Make him sit, Platz. And anything else you want. That is how you get your so well trained

    Love it! My puppy (7 month old Aussie) has a great “out” command when our hand is on the toy (or whatever’s in his mouth). He’s pretty good about not playing keep away when we’re playing fetch inside, but LOVES to play keep away if we’re playing fetch outside with a tennis ball. I’ve seen Kayl’s video about how to get your dog to love to bring the toy back to you, but I’m wondering if you guys have any other tips regarding curbing some of the “keep away” behavior, considering it seems fairly situational. Thanks!

      Great question, Kristen! Make sure you have control of either your dog or the toy if you have any question about them being successful. Even if they’re reliable “most of the time” they can always drag a leash or the toy can be attached to the line so you can eliminate the game of keep away! Thanks for watching ~Ken

    if a puppy has stolen something and runs away with it, me calling "drop it" doesn't work - understandably, because me chasing after him is much more fun! How can I get him to release it from across the room? Especially if he has managed to get something that could be dangerous, like a hair clip?

    • @afterdeth
      @afterdeth 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Prevent him from getting it in the first place. Manage his environment more. Don't ever play chase with him if he had something in his mouth. Do frequent dedicated training sessions for "drop it" and eventually you'll be able to ask him to do it at a distance, one he's got a positive reinforcement history with that command. Don't try asking him to do it before he's ready and then get frustrated and just repeatedly shout the command, that'll devalue the command. Our puppy only learned a reliable "drop" from a distance at like 8 months old

    I’m wondering what other items to use to start generalizing the behavior. One of the issues I’m having with my 4 month old golden is an interest in shoes. So far he hasn’t been destructive (because he’s watched and caught) and the easiest solution it to avoid the issue completely by picking them up every time. But accidents happen and I don’t really want to use a shoe to proof the behavior on purpose in case he starts to see them as toys.

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, DScritchy! You should spend some time teaching your dog to "leave it" with items like shoes. You're making a great choice to not leave anything for your dog to chew when you can't supervise, but it's a good idea to show your pup that shoes are off limits when it comes to chewing. We have a video that will show you how to teach your dog to "leave it". Remember, supervision is key and when you have time to supervise, you have time to train! When training a behavior with your puppy, how long should your training session last, and how many times a day should it be repeated? I have a 4 month old border collie who seems to have way more energy than attention span. Any advise would be much appreciated.

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi there, Sue! That will depend on your schedule and your puppy’s motivation level. At least 3 or 4, 10 minute sessions in your day would be great. If your puppy has some energy left, then you can add more sessions. Take advantage of the natural training opportunities during the day as well. Before feeding you can work on your “wait” or use a little of your pup’s meals to encourage great luring and shaping exercises. Throw in a fun game of tug or a controlled fetch in your hallway for even more fun exercises! Happy Training ~Ken

    Is there a way to get a dog to respond to one parent well if the other is still old school yelling "DROP IT!!! DROP IT DROP IT!" I work for hours training my Aussie positively exactly with this method. He responds during training, and often when I have him out at an empty park. But, if my husband is anywhere around, forget it! If I DO get him to come, he can smell if there is food on me or not and will not let go if no food. Or will let go and just attacks my pocket or my hand. My husband thinks I overtreat. He will even start yelling and grabbing if the dog doesn't respond to me immediately (as if he is supporting my command?)
    Is it at all possible to teach him to recognize my voice and obey immediately like we practice? I don't think my husband will ever get on board. But, if I can get him to drop right away from my command, my husband won't step in.
    Help!

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi there, Diesel.the.beast! This is a great example where you need to focus on training the skill using an interactive toy. Making sure you have some control of the “object of value” really allows you to help your Pitbull to understand that he needs to “drop it” when you ask. With one dog, I actually created a tug-toy out of a tennis ball by putting a rope through it. And that dog was only allowed to play with tennis balls when we were working on this skill, and we were using the “tennis ball tug-toy”. That way, the dog in training could quickly learn that for any game to continue, he had to respond to the “drop it” command. Thanks we could play more after he had dropped it.
      Take advantage of holding your toy still and taking his collar if he doesn’t understand the drop it cue yet. By stopping any interaction, and taking the fun out of the game, he will learn that he needs to drop the toy when asked if he wants the play to continue. Happy Training! ~Ken

    I am having a few small issues with my 14 week old, she now knows sit, down, and she does react to "up" or "off" if I say it on the sofa where I train her but getting her to drop things, or me eating food is a nightmare as well as getting her to lie down and stay which is a pain as I work from home and the only thing that slightly works is to hug her with one arm whilst I am typing/on phone for work which gives me a sore arm and slows my work as well as doesn't treat the problem. I am not worried about giving them treats, its just I notice when I give treats she goes to toilet more and she isn't properly toilet trained yet so its bad enough rushing to her when she decides to go indoors without adding to that worry!

    I presume your ideas to get the puppy (or any dog) to drop the toy in the first place applies to most other training situations? For example if a dog barks and is a little too aggressive around another dog walking by and you want them to stop after saying "quiet", you could gently but firmly tug on their leash (i.e. make them realize "this isn't fun anymore I'll stop".)
    Then if they stop you give them a treat within a second, hiding the treat from sight so the dog doesn't think they only have to behave when he sees you have treats? Also this "hiding the treat from sight" idea I presume works in basically most other training situations?
