The dogs name is important my ex wife got rid of my dog saying it was a stray and the new family that adopted her took her back to the shelter because she didnt listen to them. So when I got her back and used her real name she instantly knew who I was and knew she was going home.

You're exactly right. Zak George is one of the worst offenders. Every one of his videos starts with a two minute advertisement for some stupid dog food and his book. He spends 10% of the video on what is actually in the title of the video, and the rest are just tips he already used in other videos, followed by asking us to like, comment, subscribe, follow him on social media, pay him on Patreon and basically everything short of giving him our Social Security numbers.
Simpawtico Dog Training is almost completely different. Yes, he does do the like, comment, subscribe beg, but his videos are wholly focused on the subject in the title and not as a cash grab sponsorship, merchandise ad or Patreon beg.

You know that feeling, when you've watch Cesar Milan til your eyes bled, and you honestly think your doing everything (almost, pretty much) correct. You figure, hey we've got two 5 month old American bulldog pups, these are just the things you deal with.
Then you watch this video and realize, we've been doing somethings very wrong, and you described the issues we've experienced to a T.
Super greatful for this video and all your great info, also greatful my wife and I saw this while the girls are still young. They really are wonderful and very well behaved, usually, until their on the park amped up off leash and we're screaming before they reach the road!

I’m so sorry that you’ve been misled by the Cesar-con, he’s an entertainer not a trainer. Your real idols should be Ian Dunbar, Jean Donaldson, Zak George and, of course, Ian Stone. These four have guided me through being the best dog trainer I can be, and I hate to think where the dogs would be if I had not found my four idols and started down the right path.

Alright, how about the fact that he relies on very outdated training methods and ideas? He heavily leans into dominance theory, which these days has been next to debunked in it’s usefulness of getting rid of unruly behaviour, and also in it’s place within the relationships between people and dogs, and also most of the time with dog-dog relationships (save for a few instances). He also leans heavily into positive punishment and threats of positive punishment, when there have been several studies that show that positive reinforcement training is not only kinder to the dog but actually gets far better results. Mr Millan has never been formally educated on dog behaviour or even animal behaviour and yet he sells himself as an expert and someone to follow, if you were to ask any behaviour-based vet, or even anyone who has passed any long-term courses in dog behaviour or training, they would tell you that Mr Millan’s methods aren’t only outdated but they have a high risk of being detrimental to the long term mental well being of a dog.

My golden retriever is only 3.5 months old and I already have slipped into the habit of saying his name when I am reprimanding him (even though I know better...). I will absolutely try to stop this and instead try to leave his name out entirely unless it's something positive. And I will also try to practice the different volumes of saying his name with the reward scaling, I really hope it works well. I also don't even have a nickname for him yet (probably because I haven't even had him for that long yet) so I think I'll try to come up with one! Thanks so much for your videos, they are a huge help!

I gave all my new husky pups names, one came naturally, catch phrase for liter was “ that must Bootsy”, the one always either crying or upset. Then she completed her name with a display of kicking feet just 2 weeks old. Then Shamrock was named for her markings, as Bootsy. The dad’s puppy has a name for the only male in the litter, JJ after his dad Jerry. Bootsy’s mom has another name for her, Kamik which means Eskimo Boots, and they have been very happy to hear all news. Dogs have many names, some they may keep to themselves.

I am always wary of opening our front door to people, as we have no gate between us the lane we live on. Now I know how to train my dog to come back if she "escapes". Such a relief.

I cannot say how grateful I am I found this channel. My husband and I adopted a young, not-yet-neutered (tomorrow’s the day, yay!) American Pitbull Terrier. He’s got the energy level of Category 5 hurricane but he truly is a good, good boy and he has enriched both our lives tremendously already in the one month we’ve had him! Using the training methods and the general approach to training that I’ve learnt from listening to and watching in these videos have helped me to help him be a much more calm, satisfied, and polite dog! I’ve already got us signed up for training classes in group classes at a training facility in my city so that I can be taught to teach him correctly and supervised while doing so, but I believe that we’ll have laid a better foundation before we go in because of Simpawtico !!

Omg this video is so helpful as I have been experiencing these issues (ignoring me when I ask him to come) for a very long time. Thank you so much for the tips! I have no idea that keep calling his names on everything will have a negative impact. You definitely deserve more subscribers!!

I've been watching a buttload of dog training YT videos and I have to say that this dudes vids are the best. All of it is practical and evidence-based instruction and it is effective. Our dogs have always been pretty well behaved but there were always areas that we just kind of gave up on and accepted the iffy behavior. Now I realize it was our approach and that we were the reason we sometimes didn't have success. I'm a fan!

Great to the point video. Thank you for great tips. I wish I had seen 2 years ago but will definitely start now to correct bad habits of using my dog’s name. Sharing with friends and family.

Wow! Parenting = training! As a mother of 3, I really appreciate the visuals using the family. I have been trying to get my dogs to come when I call... I live on a busy highway and like to walk them on the sidewalks in the afternoon. One day they both ran off (slipped out of their collars) and chased a bird right to the edge of the highway! I called them and they came right back to me. My mutts are awesome.

Lots of good information here. You answered the one question I had at the beginning: What if I have to yell at my dog, in an emergency? We have 3 dogs and so we usually precede commands with the dog's name. What you said made perfect sense.

Thanks! One of these days I had a situation where this video comes very handy. I was walking off the leash, when a skater passed by and my dog got scared and run. Needless to say she was deaf... On the bright side I found out she knows her way home. But time to train her to be responsive to me shouting! As always, great video.

I've always been bad with this. So I actually worked around it by having a "naughty name" that I trained for them to go lie down in a certain spot. Their full names are always positive, but their nickname, usually shortened, I can get my frustration out with. It's been very helpful.

while watching my dog tried to get on my bed and I automatically used his name as a correction. I did not realize I was making such a critical dog training mistake. Thank you so much for the information. Now to the hard part which is breaking that bad habit.

I’ve had my 6mo rescue dog for 3 weeks and I’m already learning so much about training/expectations placed on dogs. My dog had a different name for the first 5mo of her life so it’s taking time getting her used to her new one! It’s important to celebrate the wins & be consistent & patient, thanks for this video 😊

I will stop using my girl’s name to reprimand her not to do certain things. Very good insight and reminder! Appreciate that!
