Thanks for watching How to Get Puppy to Sleep Longer. How late does your puppy let you sleep in?

It's common for young puppies to wake early. Try to add more mental stimulation in during the evening, offer a small snack before bed and make the crate area a little quieter / darker. A lot of puppies outgrow the early morning wake ups as they get older.

Josie was up at 6:00 when I first got her at 10 weeks, we are now on a 6:30- 7:00 schedule, she is doing well except that I have made her playpen smaller and the crate is in there with the door open, she will go in and out periodically or if she has just started to nap and I place her in there during the day at night time she does not me to close the door so I keep it open for now.

Sounds like you're working on this slowly. That's great! With some help, you can teach her that the crate is a good place for naps! If you need the games to work on for this skill, they are in our training program.

Hi! So I’ve heard it said and you say that puppies do need 18 to 20 hours sleep when they’re young. Can you comment on how long? In other words 8 to 16 weeks old they need that much sleep or what age do they need that much sleep?

My 15-week Golden retriever puppy is crate trained and rarely whines in it. She has dinner at 6pm and she's fast sleep in her pen by 8pm. I take her potty at 10pm and put her in her crate for the night. At around 3:30 to 4am, I hear her move around a lot. She doesn't whine or bark, just lots of moving. I take her potty and put her back in but she won't sleep, just keeps moving around. Is it ok to keep her awake between 8 and 10pm? Will it help? And if I give her a small snack before bed, does she need to drink water again? I remove her water at 8pm.
Also, what can i put on the crate tray to reduce the noise of her nails when she's moving around? She has a bed but she shoves it to the side sometimes. Thank you!

She might need a schedule adjustment in the evening, including a small snack before bed. Working on the crate games can also increase her comfort in the crate when she's awake.

Take a look at that video for some great ideas, including adjusting the evening schedule and making sure the crate is quiet and dark, with a white noise machine.

I wish my puppy had a schedule I could work with. She's 10 months old and her sleep at night has got progressively worse, she's now waking at least 7 times a night.
I'm so exhausted and don't even know where to start. She sleeps like a dream during the day, by herself, but wakes up and barks and howls every 30 mins - 2 hours (maximum) during the night. I put let her out to pee, put her back to bed, she barks just as I've fallen back to sleep. All night.

This is really difficult for both of you! It sounds like you would really benefit from having a trainer come to your home to work with you and your pup. Unfortunately, the training industry is not well regulated and you have to do your research to make sure the trainer you work with uses fear free and positive methods based in behavioral science. Credentials to look for in a trainer would be Fear Free Certified, CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed) and/or CBCC-KA (Certified Behavior Consultant Canine-Knowledge Assessed.) Here is a directory that might be helpful:
      www.ccpdt.org/dog-owners/certified-dog-trainer-directory/
Or one other option in case you need more resources:

@@HowToTrainADreamDog Thank you so, so much for getting back to me and your kind response. She's sleeping a lot better now. I've made sure we have the same schedule every day, which seems to be helping.

It is extremely important to get to the bottom of why the dog is barking so you can then put a plan in place to address it. This video can help get you started. Stop Puppy Barking: th-cam.com/video/VcC8SMi0Y94/w-d-xo.html

My puppy sleeps for about 2 hours at a time, 3 times a day. So a grand total of 6 hours, but spread out enough that I’m up all day.

Young puppies need 18 - 20 hours of sleep in a day, so if he or she is only sleeping 8 hours at night, you'll want to push for more naps.
