    The answer your other question about how much we started with and how much did we make is as follows: we started with a ferment of about 6.5 gallons of 18% wash, we distilled it once and got about 3 gallons of low wines. The second distillation (the spirit run) produced about 1.25 gallons of 160 proof.

    It sounds like you are talking about the proofing parrot. It allows you to read the proof as the product comes off of the still. These videos are made to show only how the still operates so we are not making any cuts for heads or tails. We are distilling for fuel alcohol so cuts are not necessary. If we were distilling for drinking alcohol, we would be making cuts.

    I see that you welded that flange onto your keg. I bought a tri clamp fitting that came with 2 weld on flanges, and they fit right inside the hole on the keg. A little teflon tape and it's a perfect seal. No welding needed on the keg.

      Patrick Taylor Regardless what still you use. It does not make alcohol, it separates the alcohol from everything else. If your ABV is low in the mash, it will be low in the spirit.

    • @DewayneJohnson83
      @DewayneJohnson83 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jbaker4900 not true. If he was running a reflux or bubble plate still he could pull 90% from 8%abv mash. With a pot still, yes your almost right... Run it slow and pack the column.

    • @jbaker4900
      @jbaker4900 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DewayneJohnson83 He's not running a column with plates. He said, " I got the same without thumper ". Even if he was, mash abv directly effects abv of the spirit. You could pull a 90 % abv spirit from a column. The duration your pulling 90% goes back to available alcohol from the mash and fermentation.
      Again a still doesn't make alcohol, it only separates alcohol.

    • @DewayneJohnson83
      @DewayneJohnson83 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jbaker4900 you just confirmed my comment. A still simply separates ethanol from water. Mash Abv has no correlation with finished proof, it's all about the efficiency of the still and operator. Otherwise you could run a 18%abv mash as fast as you wanted in a pot still and always get 180 proof

    I noticed you use a SS ferrule to make your column connection, and not a copper one, which I know you sell. Whats the reasoning begin this? Is there an advantage in using the SS one? Thx

    • @olympicdistillers
      @olympicdistillers  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The stainless steel ferrule is more durable and less expensive than the copper ferrule, so we use it at all connection points. The downside is that the stainless ferrule can not be soldered effectively and must be silver brazed or TIG welded because of the dissimilar metals. We silver braze our ferrules because it looks better than a TIG welded joint.

    • @kirkstinson7316
      @kirkstinson7316 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Old post post but I'll reply. The copper thing us called a proofing parrot. It's like a pipe in a pipe so distillate goes into center pipe with your hydometer , overflows into the outer pipe and then from that one to your jug. The still is a full size keg and probably running a high wasting SG. So a 15 gallon keg will give you a couple gallons high proof.
