One can now buy these in all glass for about $10.00 USD on Ebay and easily adaptable for this purpose. I don;t think I could buy the copper and stainless for that and also save the labor and trouble making this part. But do like all the vids showing this as I have a 200 gallon stainless tank I will be converting into a still and will need much larger 4-6" dia cooling head I will be making this way to recover methanol from my biodiesel process
-24Seven- . . . Those 10 - 20 $$ parts are just the condenser, not a sophisticated column. . . . appropriate for a 1,500W hot plate heating a gallon of wash. . . . how's your dream still coming along ??
I do not make any kind of liquor at first with this still. I just distil a wash (any wash) to get neutral 95% alcohol and with that (95%) alcohol I distil Gin or flavour the alcohol by steeping, adding spirit flavours or ageing it. Lots of fun. Cheers.
thanks. I am about to set up a Nixon Stone type still which has a side section for the condensing and reflux to occur - all internal. Can you use your 95% ethanol product to make whiskey by aging in a small barrel or adding charred oak chips??

Thank you for your comment. I do not fully understand your question, but I will try my best to answer it as I understand it. The initial ethanol %? - By the time you start collecting the alcohol it should be at 95.6%. You can watch this video on how to run this still - th-cam.com/video/B5qiBg5FuA8/w-d-xo.html Time to obtain 95% Alc? Once the boiler comes to a boil and the temperature at the still head is stable you need to run the still column in full reflux for another 20-30 minutes before you start collecting. So the time will be the time your boiler takes to come to a boil PLUS 20-30 minutes. Column packing? With this column you should only use 350-370g of high quality stainless scrubbers OR SPP (Spiral Prismatic Packing). How much time to collect 1 litre 95%? This still column will produce 95.6% alcohol (neutral spirits) at a rate of 500ml/hr (3 drops per second) on a column packed with SS Scrubbers and 1500ml/hr on a column packed with SPP (Spiral Prismatic Packing). What do you have to do to get 100% Ethanol? Unfortunately under normal atmospheric pressure 95.6% Ethanol is the maximum alcohol percentage achievable with distillation alone. Cheers. Louwrens

@@redsun5145 For a 1000 litre boiler you will have to upscale the column to at least a 3 inch column or ,even beter, a 4inch column. With a 2inch column on a 1000 litre boiler it will take you AGES to finish a still run. With a 1000litres of a14% ABV wash and a collection rate of 500ml per hour it will take you days to finish a still run (even with SPP in the column it will take days). If you upscale to a 3" or 4" column you will probably have to change from column packing to plates. I have no experience with columns larger than 2" and you will have to get an expert opinion on the design, size and heat source if you want to build a larger (than 2") column. Cheers.

Nice design sir! You didn’t just mention how you welded rounded cap on top of pipe? And how much distance should be between the cap and the coil!?
The best would be to Tig-weld the cap on, but I silver soldered it on. The distance between the cap and the coil is about 2 - 2.5cm (1 Inch). Cheers.
