When looking at this episode from a high level, you get "Turn Left" vibes. Similar to Turn Left, there is a Doctor-lite episode involving the companion living their life in an alternate timeline. But once you get beyond that, there are a few concerning things. 1. The difference here is, we see 60ish years of a "Doctorless Timeline" and everything turned out fine (unlike in Turn Left when the world went to crap only within a few years without the Doctor). So I guess throughout their time traveling adventures moving from now on changes will need to be made so that something does attack the Earth again (probably Daleks). 2. That being said, in this "Doctorless Timeline" they could have had some tragedy (or tragedies) occur which sets the world up such that Roger ap Gwilliam could come to power. And basically now with the Doctor back in the universe he can save the day from these threats over the next X adventures and never have the world at a point where Gwilliam actually gets elected. 3. They also could have had it such that in the beginning of the episode the Doctor mentions Gwilliam and he steps on the circle after Ruby distracts him with questions about Gwilliam, but in the end loop he doesn't go off on that tangent (because Gwilliam was an issue) and was able to prevent himself from stepping into that circle. 4. Now in this timeline where the Doctor still exists, Older Ruby isn't able to use her future shadow to stop Gwilliam. So there's still that to deal with.

3:48 What I get from this is that it was about fixing the mistake the Doctor did by breaking the Fairy Circle so Ruby had to do something good (stop Roger Williams) so that she could spring back in time to prevent what the Doctor did. I thought it was about an evil spirit in form of "Mad Jack" who may possessed Roger Williams but could it be that it was just a vengeful spirit who was mad about the broken fairy circle? It would give the phrase "Watch your step" another deep meaing as you can´t be sure what you´re going to step in.
I got the same impression as you about Mad Jack possessing Rogers. Because Rogers obviously was already meant to exist before the circle was broken, seeing as the Doctor was talking about him beforehand, but he was just sort of a bad pm rather than a nuclear bomb maniac. So I feel like Ruby's act of redemption was stopping Mad Jack who was acting through Roger.
@@luisd.mancilla8169 The Doctor did say the Gwilliam would put the world on the *brink* of nuclear war, perhaps Ruby entered a timeline where he would have actually caused a nuclear war, but on the regular timeline he only gets close and so doesn't need to be stopped in the same way.
The problem is that the doctor never leaves but up and vanishes and to be honest that screw up and you have unit with another doctor and never tell ruby before hating her about him
I think RTD and the crew really knocked this one out of the stadium - all 73 yards. Unnerving, poignant and riveting - even without The Doctor for the most part. Best story so far.

@@elliottf313 Why are you here? Watching a behind the scenes for something you think is so bad it's impossible to like seems like a huge waste of your time, and you've certainly wasted ours.
73 yards was such an intriguing episode. Very very captivating experience, and eerie all the same. Cheers to Russell and his writing, I couldn't stop watching.
After watching the episode I had to just sit there in silence to take what happened in, and now I'm looking out the window every time I pass just in case.
I liked the episode. I've watched enough David Lynch films to be perfectly comfortable with ambiguous endings and unanswered questions and the episode itself felt like a Twilight Zone (Black Mirror if you're under 40) episode.
Thank you. I was trying to work out why I didn't enjoy this episode. I don't enjoy David Lynch. I appreciate that everyone is doing a great job on camera and behind it, but all the unanswered questions don't work for me.
Talking of Black Mirror, why do I feel like the plot about Roger Ap Gwilliam and the Albion Party was borrowing heavily from the plot of Demon 79, with Michael Smart and the Britannia Party?
@@matthewlittle9174 I don't know. It's not really possible, given that 73 Yards was filmed before Demon 79 was released on Netflix. But this is a really common sci-fi horror trope - the first time I saw it as a teenager in the nineties was in The Dead Zone, Cronenberg's 1983 adaptation of the 1979 Stephen King novel, where the sociopathic politician who will cause a nuclear holocaust is the US President.
A lot of the questions you can answer if you think about it. One of the unanswered questions is ‘why did The Doctor disappear?’ I’ve formed a workable explanation in my head but I can understand this feeling like a stone unturned. Otherwise, the rest of the questions unanswered don’t really matter, e.g. ‘what was the old Ruby saying that made others run away?’ It just doesn’t matter, that’s not the point of the episode. If you’re frustrated by not knowing that, it’s not for you, which is fine
Absolutely brilliant episode! Poor Ruby really had a rough time in this timeline... you just KNEW things were going to take a turn for the worse as soon has her mother tried to confront the woman. 😭
Stunning episode, didn't think Wild Blue Yonder could be topped so soon. After the 60th specials and the current series, I haven't felt this excited about Doctor Who for the best part of a decade.

Whether this was your top favorite episode or one of your least favorite episodes (ur crazy!😂) we can all agree that all of the actors did an amazing job. Every single one of them. No matter the size of the role they should all be very proud of their performances.
This hitchhiker that keeps appearing as different characters in different times every week. 4:05 - You could take that shot of the pub from any angle, why prefer the red phone box? I recall one prominently appearing in Dark Water / Death in Heaven insinuating it was Missy’s Tardis.
I couldn't bear to breath at some scenes. how beautiful old ruby was. how beautiful and tragic the story went. confusion, fear, uncertainty, bored, eager, joy, acceptance - so many emotions in one episode, one lifetime. I was just asking myself, how many times it happened. it must have been at least 2. first: the doctor disappears. the nuclear war breaks out. ruby dies. second: the doctor disappears. the nuclear war is prohibited. ruby dies. but, what did she say to the people that talked to them? what in the world could she have said?
Might not be related at all but right at the beginning Ruby says "I've been to Wales twice." At the end of the episode, the dialogue is basically the same except for Ruby saying "I've been to Wales three times now."
Maybe as the woman is ***spoilers*** ruby her self, she makes them escape cus timeline is so twisted? Like they can't stand it. not in a rational way, just instinctively like the doctor couldn't be near Jack cus he was a fix point in time.

So this series finally turned. Absolutely gave the creeps, been a long time since anything gave me that physical and emotional reaction. It was worth the pain of the first three shows. Milly nailed it.
So, do you understand who's going to deal with Roger ap Gwilliam now that Ruby hasn't stopped him? What about the fact that a random old woman was enough to make Ruby's mum abandon her? Why did people run away from the woman, and what could she have said that made even Kate Stewart do the same? So many unanswered questions means that the plot wasn't well thought-out.
@@ingec1736 Incorrect. I've been watching it since Matt Smith, and I've rewatched everything from Eccleston to Capaldi _several_ times over. All of these questions are ones that are only relevant to _this_ episode; as such, they are ones that should be answered _by_ this episode. This episode has introduced a villain and thwarted him, only to then set him back to where he was at the start and forget about him. It has also introduced the idea that Kate Stewart and Ruby's mum are so easily scared that a blurry old woman is enough to make them abandon people. The over-arching plot of Series 14 is the identity of Ruby's mum, the origin of the snow, and what's going on with Susan Twist's characters; this episode has done nothing to further these plot points beyond finally having a main character recognise that Susan keeps popping up, but even _that_ development gets erased by the end of the episode.
@@Jackson-ub1uvhey! In my experience of watching dw, this show is supposed to leave you with more questions. If they were answered in the same episode, for me, I would have thought the plot was rushed. Hope u can understand lol.

While this was the first time I did feel that the ending could have been more this era, there’s no denying Millie was incredible. Now knowing this was the first episode she actually made makes her performance even more impressive
This episode was wild, an instant classic. I wonder if we will get answers to all the questions left unanswered in the end, because as good as the mistery was I couldn't help myself from scratching my head at various moments.
So much mystery in this episode. Why did the doctor disappear? What kind of effect did ghost(?) Ruby have on the people who talked to her? Ruby can make it snow and now she got some kind of magic protection of her timeline?
WAIT. In the christmas special, Mrs Flood only knew of the Tardis after Ruby walked in. Is she another future version of Ruby, but Ruby will have learned to actually control these??
I just watched it I liked how it was mysterious it kinda reminded me of Peter Capaldi's episodes with that kind of feeling of mystery and emotion. to add it was great to see how the episode was made
Fantastic behind the scenes, combined with Unleashed, this cements the "73 Yards" episode as an 8/10 for me, potentially even a 9/10 after I've have time to let this episode ruminate for a bit! 😂 Enjoyed the mystery and how there were aspects left intentionally unanswered! A great Doctor Lite story on the whole! 🙌🔥
Torn about this episode! Felt like a few too many unanswered questions. Maybe you could have aged Millie a bit aswell? I kept thinking, "wait, is she supposed to be 40 here?". The episode definately kept me intrigued though, I'll give it that. EDIT: Okay, I realize they did try to age he up, but I really don't think you could notice? Might just be me idk
@@marcwaller3657 Paul Rudd is a good exemple of that, plus the fact that they were in the future so you never really know what kind of products they have there. I just think that the montage felt like a build up and I was suppost to be kinda shocked with the fact that time passed and all of that, but Millie's super cute face didn't allow me to experience it and that hurt the episode for me and for others.
As a person who has to age check people for products a lot of people look very young for their age. I think with her wardrobe and hair they did an okay job with ageing her sometimes it's mannerisms
While it was pretty to look at, it made no sense. Where was the Doctor? Why did he disappear and Ruby didn't? What were the hand movements the "mysterious woman" was making? What did the woman tell the people to make them run away and reject Ruby? Why was Kate acting so dumb, ignoring the warnings of what happens to people when they talk to the woman? Why didn't Ruby tell her boyfriends about her situation?
I can understand Ruby not wanting to tell her boyfriends, as the only two outcomes of that are them leaving because they think she's insane, or them trying to speak to the woman and being scared off. For Kate, it was probably just overconfidence, but that's also something that goes against her very character. I agree with everything else though, but I'd like to add the question of who will stop Roger ap Gwilliam now that the entity is gone.
Good news, based on next week's trailer we're very probably getting more horror next week. I also want more horror as I genuinely think RTD is better at it - but doesn't like writing it as much as other genres.
11:09 Everyone else has already covered Mille acing this episode, but I just to say that Amanda Walker 100% nailed that gut punch as old Ruby in the end. _All the regret, guilt and unresolved issues at the end of your life. what are you going to do with all that?_

Yes, there were plenty of unanswered question, but I have the feeling it will come down the road. Beside that, this was a superbe episode, giving some of the best Tennant Smith vibe. First episode since Capaldi to give me such thrill.
I have mixed feelings about this episode. I was loving it right up until the end when it was revealed who the old woman was. If it was Ruby all along how was she teleporting herself around? What was she saying to people to make them run away? The bootstrap paradox things bugs me too. The whole time I thought it was some supernatural being who knew something about Ruby and her origins that was scaring everyone away from her. Everything before that ending though was really good.
The butterfly affect, only without stepping on the butterfly.
@@Sparx632didn't Kate mention something about Ruby's time line??
The problem is that the doctor never leaves but up and vanishes and to be honest that screw up and you have unit with another doctor and never tell ruby before hating her about him
I think RTD and the crew really knocked this one out of the stadium - all 73 yards. Unnerving, poignant and riveting - even without The Doctor for the most part. Best story so far.
genuinely one of my favorite episodes ever ive rewatched it 7 times
One of THE greatest episodes of the show, and I think it's an episode that isn't fully grasped by most of us yet, but will be dissected and discussed for years to come

This episode blew me away and so did Millie. Absolutely fantastic.
I love this show it has a special place in my heart .
@@matthewlittle9174 That's a possibility but remember that 3 Prime Ministers have been deposed under RTD. It's kind of a running theme.
Loved this episode! Finally nice to see Kate Stewart back once more!
Stunning episode, didn't think Wild Blue Yonder could be topped so soon. After the 60th specials and the current series, I haven't felt this excited about Doctor Who for the best part of a decade.
This is real Sci-Fi/Fantasy short story. Best episode yet. Very well done. could have been a few minutes longer, but that is just me wishing that y'all would make mini movies or more episodes please. This one I'm going to watch again and again. No cringe, just wonderful.
I think I will, too & I almost never rewatch.
(Except season 4 cos I love Donna.)
Whether this was your top favorite episode or one of your least favorite episodes (ur crazy!😂) we can all agree that all of the actors did an amazing job. Every single one of them. No matter the size of the role they should all be very proud of their performances.
This was a fantastic episode! My favourite so far.
@@AmalGum001 the third version would be the last scene! yes, you're very right, thank you
I don't think the woman says anything, I think she just messes with the people's minds
Maybe as the woman is ***spoilers*** ruby her self, she makes them escape cus timeline is so twisted? Like they can't stand it. not in a rational way, just instinctively like the doctor couldn't be near Jack cus he was a fix point in time.
Maybe, being a magic creature, she can say whatever will make them uber-terrified of Ruby.
This episode scared the crap out of me, but in the best way! I'm so glad Doctor Who has this fantasy vibe. As a fan of both sci-fi and fantasy, it's really exciting to see. I can't wait for more!

Please tell me I wasn’t the only one who burst into tears after this?
You probably were. Sure, it's a bit sad that Ruby kept being abandoned, but she saved people from a potential nuclear war and seemed to live a fairly normal life.
@@Jackson-ub1uv yeah, that’s a good point. She was really good in this episode, she was really smart and proved she can handle a lot when push comes to shove

I didn’t, but I did get choked up. I’m sure plenty of people did cry. Some have commented here.
Amazing work and you created a brilliant episode! Tnank you 🎉
I still want to know what elder Ruby said that made everyone run away.

Um. at 6:05 isnt that Jane Tranter not Julie Gardner? Graphics Mistake.
This was such a good Doctor-lite bottle episode. For me even right up there with Blink
Lost for words. Amazing episode.
A very unique episode i have to say, but one that later had me thinking a lot about couse corrections, changes in life, perspectives... its really intriguing this installment. And with like 2 minutes of the Doctor, this one will go down as a unique entry but seemingly beloved.
This was an amazing episode... that I don't ever want to watch again!😅.
The whole thing was brilliant top to bottom, but it was just so depressing, especially what happens when Carla speaks to the Woman. I was devastated and I personally don't want to ever relive that, but who knows? Maybe I'll come around later. For now, on to the next episode!
This was a great episode. I'm glad that Russell is back!
So this series finally turned. Absolutely gave the creeps, been a long time since anything gave me that physical and emotional reaction. It was worth the pain of the first three shows. Milly nailed it.
What's Doctor Who without the occasional absolute fever dream
Such a good episode ❤ ignore the hate dw and the cast, u guys are amazing. (coming from a 14 yr old)
So, do you understand who's going to deal with Roger ap Gwilliam now that Ruby hasn't stopped him? What about the fact that a random old woman was enough to make Ruby's mum abandon her? Why did people run away from the woman, and what could she have said that made even Kate Stewart do the same?
So many unanswered questions means that the plot wasn't well thought-out.
@Jackson-ub1uv lol just because we don't have the answers yet, doesn't mean the plot isn't thought through well enough. You must be new to dw

Exactly. Change the future & leave the threat “bound” before he can rise.
Its DW version of 'the inner light' , a Star Trek the Next Generation episode that was also one of its standout stories.
Very similar in terms of a whole lifetime that happened, but didn't...but maybe did.
An excellent ep on reflection...at first its seems bonkers but after you process it for a bit , it turns out this episode is yet another banger which stands on its own pedestal as well.
One of the best episodes of the show to date!
Beautiful episode! Both in terms of the story and the direction!
Maybe a rewatch will help with that. I’m hoping so.
Edit
Don’t get the idea that it bothers me, I loved the ep.
This was so reminiscent of Donna in turn left . The concept of the companion saving everyone.
So much mystery in this episode.
Why did the doctor disappear?
What kind of effect did ghost(?) Ruby have on the people who talked to her?
Ruby can make it snow and now she got some kind of magic protection of her timeline?
Another one: How got the circle there, already prepared with the note for Ruby for the future to stop the prime minister?
WAIT. In the christmas special, Mrs Flood only knew of the Tardis after Ruby walked in.
Is she another future version of Ruby, but Ruby will have learned to actually control these??
Love Millie ❤
This episode was so cool, enjoyed it a lot, reminded me of turn left
Absolutely love it ❤
This episode was spetacular, it s hard to describe into words the feelings and reflections it gave me
I just watched it I liked how it was mysterious it kinda reminded me of Peter Capaldi's episodes with that kind of feeling of mystery and emotion.
to add it was great to see how the episode was made
Genuinely one of the best episodes in the whole series.
This was by far my favorite episode in the more scare and fear inducing DW episodes. It was chilling, saddening, deep. It really was grade A.
"Turn Left" + "The Woman in the Attic" + "The Curse of Clyde Langer" = "73 Yards"
Good behind the scenes
Another instant classic like last week's episode. Ncuti's era is shaping up to be quite good!!
First episode of new Era I liked, really a Doctor Who episode!
What an utterly haunting episode.
To be honest, I didn't notice either.
What she was wearing glasses in the later scene! Everyone knows that's something only old people do! /s
Some people don't actually age as much as others, I know people nearly 40 who look nearly the same as when they were 20.
He won’t need to be stopped. Not breaking the circle means not releasing Mad Jack which makes Roger either not become PM or not be so crazy.
@@judithstrachan9399 Except that, in _both_ timelines, the Doctor says that a Prime Minister named Roger ap Gwilliams tries to nuke the world.
@@Jackson-ub1uv so maybe, because Ruby saved the circle & stopped the release of Mad jack, Roger failed to get enough support to succeed.

Definitely a home run for this season
11:09 Everyone else has already covered Mille acing this episode, but I just to say that Amanda Walker 100% nailed that gut punch as old Ruby in the end.
_All the regret, guilt and unresolved issues at the end of your life. what are you going to do with all that?_
Millie did amazing in this episode! i felt like this could of been a two parter, to me it felt alil rushed towards the end of the episode but it was still really good had me crying for Ruby at the end
The costume for the Doctor reminded me of Lenny Henry's skit with "Thatchos" - Even down to the moustache.
Another great Russell T Davies classic!😊😊😊

Amazing episode that I can't stop thinking about. A great example of not everything needing to be explained. Definitely one of the best written, directed, scored and acted episodes of the whole series.
with this and boom, doctor who is back in force!
Chilling, disturbing, and you felt so sad for Ruby.
If you can survive an encounter with the mini-taur-taur, then you can do anything.
