@@timlemmens1087 And there probably wasn't a star seeded by Villenguard there that greeted Jesus. A story has to have enough creative freedom to express itself (and the meaning of the location would have been slightly muddled if it said 6BC)

So many little moments. Joy throughout. Very creative. If I hunted, I might find something to not like, but I’m not interested. Definitely one of the best of the specials.

so sad that Trev died and Anita didn’t get to be a companion. wish the episode was longer so it didn’t feel as rushed, but overall i really enjoyed this episode
Intriguing concept with the case, emotional ending, lovely sequences between the Doctor and Anita. Creative way that the doors are used. The rest of it was alright, but nothing special. But I enjoyed it, so that's the important thing.
I just watched the episode and it is great. It is completely insane but so very wholesome. My favourite character this time was Anita, played by Stephanie de Whalley. The characters' relationship to the Doctor actually beat the main storyline of the episode for me, simply because the two actors had such great chemistry. I think Anita would be a great choice for a future companion. That being said I also enjoyed Joy played by Nicola Coughlan quite a bit. Well, this was nice. And now I will be waiting for the next episode.
Joy's story had me sobbing... it really hit close to home. My dad was dying in the hospital around christmas 2021... i caught covid while visiting him & missed the last week of his life. I'm glad Doctor Who touched on this topic. It was/is still so life-altering for many people. While this episode was a bit heavy i loved the concepts included w/ the doctor slowing down, the time hotel, making friends, seeing the hobbit door, t-rex, Joy bringing hope/joy to the world, Trev's help, & Anita's opportunity, etc.
Did anyone notice the song "the stowaway" from the david tenannt christmas special "voyage of the damned" near the start when we first see the inside of the hotel in the background instrumentation? Thats my favorite christmas special and i literally screamed
Was it really Steph's first time on television? 🤯 She's been gorgeous! I just LOVED Anita & instantly asked on Social Media, if we can habe her back in future. Anita would be a brilliant "earth companion", in a way like Craig was for 11. PLEASE let the Doctor visit her again, every now and then.
Doctor Who always does. I can't think about Rose, Jack, Donna, Amy and Rory, Clara, Billie or any of The Doctor's companions stories without tearing up and nothing else gets me like that.
It's a fun story but that door has never been mysterious to me because I grew up in a big family. When we (rarely) stayed in a hotel we needed two rooms that were next to each other. Then the people in both rooms would unlock their side of the door and it would be opened. You can only open it if both sides are unlocked.
It had everything, glitz and glamour, high budget action but also so much heart and every every character had a great character arc that you could emotionally invest in and break your heart. Brilliant stuff and brilliant performances all around, Nicola Coughlan absolutely breaking my heart, as well as Steph De Whalley.
It began slowly, at times I felt bored, later picked up. Very sentimetal, references to COVID time deaths and being alone are the kind of things usually written into TV soaps. Not my favourite modern episode, I share comments by others that Anita was a ray of sunshine.
In the last year I lost my partner and wasn't there for him at the end because I ran out of the physical and emotional strength to be there. Will always blame myself for it but know he doesn't, just as Joy's mom never blamed her.
@clayyoda5611 Honestly that part was really weird cos it legit led the whole plot unfolding simply cos they made those jokes xD Episode was fine though I enjoyed it nonetheless

(And the Doctor interacting later on)
One of the best Christmas Specials of recent years. Proof of Moffatt's genius and how much RTD is no longer able to uphold the expectations of writing WHO.
DW NEEDS Moffat back. No one, and I mean NO ONE writes for the Doctor as well as he does. RTD deserves all the credit for bringing DW back, but his writing is silly and has no depth. Moffat knows how to take us on an emotional roller coaster.

@throttlebirdjdm4168 Yeah, the calculations made by the people re-inventing the calendar system were off by a few years. In part because they hadn't factored in leap years. BY the time the mistake was realised they'd already been counting years up from "1AD" for almost 1500 years - a bit late to change it all up.

Nice, until the end. It just didn’t fit the rest of the story. Felt sloppy. Why bring up this arms company Villengard that the Doctor knows of from long ago and then not totally go anywhere with it. There was no reasoning or plot twist of who might have wanted this energy from this star, why did they chose Earth to make it happen, were they only trying to get the Doctor’s involvement? Anything?
