This episode was phenomenal! Best of the RTD 2 era in my opinion. I forgot that when Stephen Moffat isn’t writing his own long-form story, which he’s kind of bad at, when he’s just writing episodic one-offs, he’s a fantastic writer. This is some of the most Doctor Who-esque dialogue we’ve ever had. It was filled with so much tension. My shoulders still hurt. And it was filled with all of Moffat’s classics: religious soldiers, evil robots, faltering tech. And it finally felt like Ruby had a defining moment as a companion in defying the Doctor by handing him the casket and not tossing it. I also loved the inclusion of the “Skye Boat Song.” Does anyone know what the Doctor was saying about the dead president and his wife? Was he quoting something or is that another clue to this season’s mystery box?
It was mentioned in Series 9 that the Doctor stole the moon and the president’s wife when he was young. The Doctor later clarified that it was actually the president’s daughter. I’m guessing someone wrote a poem about those events, and he’s reciting it to keep calm.
Would’ve been great if it was done like it was with Bill where it actually meant something unlike this episode where the military weapons are not lethal at all
@@HB-fq9nn why? What would be the point or benefit of that in a war zone? Why would it take 500 seconds for her to die if they’re non lethal? I’m not shocked Ncuti loves Matt Smith as a doctor, he even loves the classic Fish Fingers n Custard as the doctor, when I heard it, I was like “HAAAA ITS BACK!”💀
One other thing I notice is that many one-off Moffat scripts are doctor/companion interchangeable. Meaning that mostly any doctor/companion combination would have worked in this episode and the episode would feel the same (minus the snow part which is more of a showrunner mandate to include).
Boom was an emotional rollercoaster. Ncuti was in top form--Ncuti is now definetly The Doctor. Every Doctor needs to have that trial by fire episode. This was Ncutis episode. ❤❤
I will say this. Ncuti is a phenomenal doctor. Millie is a wonderful companion. I had trouble with this episode. mostly with the CHARACTER Splice. they could have done better with her. but it felt like after she brought Mundy, she went totally ditzy. not really taking into consideration what was happening or the danger she was in. other than that still a good episode.
I did not expect to weep so early on in the season but I wept buckets during this episode. So beautiful and emotional and such a lovely message the world needs so badly. ❤
Wow this episode honestly blew me away! Absolutely fantastic. Can I just say Ncuti is absolutely smashing it as the Doctor! From the moment they announced him I knew he’d be brilliant. It’s really great to see a refreshing Doctor whilst still having those old traits at the same time. Fantastic episode that
Episodes 2-4 are long overdue returns to BIG ideas and heart rending stories. Davies and Moffatt are the soul of modern Dr Who. I hope Disney and the BBC lock them into long term contracts.
I’ve rewatched all three episodes several times now, and this is so far my favourite due to its simplicity and intensity of emotions. I love Space Babies because it’s quirky and funny and more than a bit bonkers. I love Devil’s Chord because it’s funny, freaky, unusual, really tied strongly with the Toymaker, has a great villain and a totally wacky song and dance routine at the end. And for me, that song and dance routine is an indication that not everything is as it seems. The fact that Harbinger was seen again during this routine indicates to me that Maestro may not be completely gone.
that was a really good episode pat your self on the back moffat you took away the doctors most powerful weapon and left him so vulnerable you took away his ability to run
Good episode! I missed Doctor Who being all hit and miss all the time, but this series is back in form. I really don't mind if some of them are not very good as long as we get episodes like this too.
It was amazing and there was so many incredible lines. I do wish though that the little girl had been allowed to have emotions- Moffat has done this many times of putting his characters through huge trauma and then not letting them grieve. I don't mean the 'he's not gone' line, that was beautiful. I just mean.. she didn't shed a single tear. The female soldier got to cry. This little girl barely acknowledged that her father, the only person she had left in the whole universe, had suddenly died. Those moments irk me so much. BUT it doesn't spoil the rest of the episode, which was 90% of it very very good. Will be one I watch again and again. (And try not to get frustrated at again and again lol)
The little girl really believes in her “faith” so she has no reason to be sad but the soldier woman was beginning to doubt her faith hence her emotions. They may have subtly tried to show the danger of believing nothing matters in life because dying is a good thing if you believe you go to a better place. There are real life cults that have some very sick ideas about life and death. Some Christian religions really do teach that someone dies because god wants another angel in heaven (there is no biblical basis for this).
@@RR4711 this is interesting, I would've wanted to see more of it in the episode cuz it didn't come across to me. I could understand her willingness to view it a certain way in the end, but to have so little emotion expressed struck me as odd. But maybe there is more to the character we have not seen yet? The doctor said he'd be coming back.
She technically still has her AI father to be with. A romantic relationship relies more on physicality. Black Mirror episode "Be Right Back" explores this with a bittersweet ending.
@@LeDayz yikes physicality isn't the issue, it's not actually him at the end of the day its an AI with a strong sense of him. This was mostly a bottle episode, but with really good drama. I would have liked a line that ruled out using the sonic "screwdriver" (I think it's more like a sonic remote at this point). Other than that, a strong outing!

I’m not shocked Ncuti loves Matt Smith as a doctor, he even loves the classic Fish Fingers n Custard as the doctor, when I heard it, I was like “HAAAA ITS BACK!”💀
I... I tought this was mostly green screen! But it´s a real set! I love it!
They've got Mouse Money now!
Great episode. My favorite of the new era along with Wild Blue Yonder.
One other thing I notice is that many one-off Moffat scripts are doctor/companion interchangeable. Meaning that mostly any doctor/companion combination would have worked in this episode and the episode would feel the same (minus the snow part which is more of a showrunner mandate to include).
I also liked that the mine also disabled the Doctor"s ability to regenerate, since it was at a quantum level ! Giving it more stake in universe too
Boom was an emotional rollercoaster. Ncuti was in top form--Ncuti is now definetly The Doctor. Every Doctor needs to have that trial by fire episode. This was Ncutis episode. ❤❤
Yeah, I'd say this is probably the best in this season so far.
Ncuti is fantastic in this role he really is
I will say this.
That role was definitely written for a younger child actor.
She's an indoctrinated, super religious, kid in a war zone.
@@notavailable2590oh possibly.
I did not expect to weep so early on in the season but I wept buckets during this episode. So beautiful and emotional and such a lovely message the world needs so badly. ❤
Julie Anne is a great director. She was amazing in this one
Great episode! Well done to everyone involved!
Wow, what an amazing set.
Fantastic episode that
interesting...which explains Warada's appearance in this episode in the future, when she becomes the doctor's companion.....
I loved this episode so much!
I love how returning to doctor who almost seems like a relapse for moffat
Episodes 2-4 are long overdue returns to BIG ideas and heart rending stories. Davies and Moffatt are the soul of modern Dr Who. I hope Disney and the BBC lock them into long term contracts.
This episode was like WOW
This episode made me start to warm up to Ruby. I didn't want her to die 😢
I’ve missed this mans writing so much more than I care to admit 🫣
Love how Moffat has been back one episode and he's already trying to kill another companion
Was something about this Dr I didn't like in first 2 episodes. Couldn't place why just didn't rate him.
This episode changed that. Tense and loved it.
The fact that Harbinger was seen again during this routine indicates to me that Maestro may not be completely gone.
beautiful episode, loved it
First episode...good
Second episode...really good
Third episode....great/special
Not bad RTD
that was a really good episode pat your self on the back moffat you took away the doctors most powerful weapon and left him so vulnerable you took away his ability to run
Good episode! I missed Doctor Who being all hit and miss all the time, but this series is back in form. I really don't mind if some of them are not very good as long as we get episodes like this too.
it was really good episode
Surely Steven Moffat holds the record for the writer who’s written for the most Doctors right?
Yes technically a whole range of Doctors if you count Curse of Fatal Death too
@@tomfinity Does that include the various Doctors in Curse of Fatal Death?
Best episode of Series 14.
Best episode in 6 years. Wild blue yonder is the only one that comes close
This episode doesn't quite work. I need to see it again.
Stunt doubles are superheroes!
This was SUCH a good episode!! ❤️ Small set, but big performances... and what a treat getting to meet Varada Sethu a whole season early!
Advice to the BBC: Pay Moffat to write more episodes.
Definitely the strongest display of the current Dr so far!
It would still be absolutely devastating to lose a parent who is the only person in the universe that you have left. "Well he wasn't a romantic partner so eh not so bad" smh lol
I was wondering how they were going to top Jinxk, I am happily blown away. Pun not intended.
Please tell me steven moffat will write more episodes for the 15th doctor
he's written the christmas special at the end of this year, past that he said he has no involvement in season 2.
Hopefully not
@@justsomerandomguyonline1144 why ?
@@melon2271 Wow really? Even though RTD's showrunner again? Usually the current showrunner writes the Christmas specials.
@@AndrewChapman yeah, moffat said it'll be his 50th episode and probably his last as he's not involved in season 2 and he said he's got a lot of work coming up.
My favorite episode in soooo long!!! Moffat was the first showrunner I watched and although RTD embodies so much of what Doctor Who is to me, my favorite episodes are always Moffats :-) So happy to be enjoying this season so far!!
This was Great 👍
AWESOME EPISODE. DOCTOR WHO DONE RIGHT 👍 Lets forget the last 2 though. 🤣
Let's not.
@@christianschoff2490 Whether you agree or not, everyone is allowed an opinion. And as I have watched every Dr Who ever made I am certainly allowed to express my opinion and the last 2 were absolute rubbish.
@@TheRealMrCods you'll be okay. Most of us liked them.
@@christianschoff2490 I'm just fine thanks.
Varada Sethu is here!?! What is she doing here?!? Has it got something to do with her role as companion in the next season?
This was mostly a bottle episode, but with really good drama. We don't know if an explosion would truly kill the Doctor permanently or he would just regenerate, so it's conveyed that he if blows up it it's going to be big. I would have liked a line that ruled out using the sonic "screwdriver" (I think it's more like a sonic remote at this point). Other than that, a strong outing!
Good luck with the ratings
Odd that this stuff isnt in doctor who unleashed. Its more interesting than that bloke wandering around
Im still mentally recovering from how brutal this episode was
