Gabriel Woolf playing Sutekh on TV again after 49 years!
An absolute legend
Maybe... maybe not... he also played the Beast in the Satan Pit, which some people are speculating may have been a form of Sutekh as well...
@@IceMetalPunk Serve you, Sutekh? Your name is abominated in every civilised world, whether that name be Set, Satan, Sodos
I remember thinking it would have been a great reveal if it was Sutekh in the pit...
Imagine doing a job 50 years ago, for a maybe a couple of days recording in a sound studio, then be invited back over half a lifetime later to revisist that character. Not to mention his work as the Beast back in series 2.
In the voice of Nine "Fantastic!"
“We’re not bringing back any old villains” said RTD. But Russell lies like a rug and I kind of love it.
Sutekh isn't just any old villain.
RTD's gleeful, shameless lying is one of things I always loved about him the most as show runner. It's such a good way to throw people off the scent and avoid spoilers, and you can just tell he enjoys so much fooling us time and time again.
Still cannot BELIEVE that some people called the Sutekh reveal. Incredible episode absolutely amazing!
Makes you wonder if there was a leak.
Yeah, I was like I wasn’t so sure but then I was like oh my God that theory was right
@@pandaphilthere was no leak. But there were many many hints and some of us people with too much time on our hands noticed them 😅
I wonder if Ms. F (Ruby's neighbor) is actually Susan Foreman
I thought it might be Sutehk... It's the rematch we've been waiting nearly 50 years for.
2:38 Tennis balls. The unsung heroes of VFX
Well, the colonel did salute it...
Skull Susan looks like she's ready to do the "Time Warp" again.
It’s astounding!
Time is fleeting!
LET'S DO TIME WAR AGAIN!
It's so Theresa May doing the Dancing Queen at the Tory Party Conference xDD
Yep
And Sutekh voiced by Gabriel Woolf, the original actor, - now 91 yrs old!!!!!!!
seeing how much of this isnt 100% CGI makes me think how long it'll take before they make an actual TARDIS to increase realism?
How do you know if the US government doesn't already have a "TARDIS"? What's at Area 51?
@@kalinystazvoruna8702 think about it. Americans? With the ability to time travel? You've seen their movies. It'd be more likely that Britain has a fully functional TARDIS in some underground facility.
You say that, but like... the Tardis as we see it *is* basically 100% practical, just one's a prop and the other is a set that they cut between.
during boom they did shoot a scene where the inside of the tardis was on the led screen and the exterior was on set so technically it was a real tardis?
@@itsholken Technically a real TARDIS, if you don't mind banging your head when you try to walk in!
Russell T Davies just brought back another forgotten villain and turned him into something scarier than the Toymaker or the Master.
I wouldn't call Sutekh forgotten, he's from one of the most popular classic series episodes ever in the height of the original show's popularity.
The Toymaker is interesting but his story is mostly missing and only got a home release after the episode where he reappears.
He was never forgotten
Definitely not forgotten, though I was very surprised that people wanted him back so badly. I thought Pyramids of Mars was just okay, nothing super special or memorable, so I kinda just assumed that Sutekh was one of those average villains fans ask to see back just for the sake of it (especially since the Sea Devils have never had a good story and fans were even more vocal about wanting them back for years). So far though, I like what they're doing with him in this story.
The reveal/appearance of the Big Bad was laughable.
Two stage hands under a blanket with one of them holding up a janky horse/dog 'scary' mask.
Sutekh was always the scariest villain. He controlled the Doctor.
CCTV footage was 66.6 meters away.
Number of the Beast.
72 yards away.
😳🫣
73 yards practically
@@rileymartin2202 72.8 still 72 lmao
@@lionofdemiseNot how rounding works, 72.8 would round up to 73, not down to 72
@@lionofdemise Er, no, not according to math. .8 gets rounded up to the next number, not down.
Really interesting to see how they did the effects for the time window. I was curious about that effect when watching the episode because it did look very cool with the mixture of the flooring for the room being visible and yet they were "in" the VHS recording.
There's also something very amusing about them calling the cue for this icon called the TARDIS and in rolls a humble tennis ball.
In terms of the tennis ball I do wonder if they could have instead made a lighter model of the Tardis and put it on a base that can rotate to have more realistic movement.
Especially as we’ve already hit the deck before we transition to that inside shot.
But saying that, given the amount of other practical effects and budget sucking VFX used I can see why they did this
I genuently have to say: My biggest respect for the Visual effects and costume department! I mean, everything in this episode is practically perfect, the writing, the camera work, EVERYTHING!
But man! Sutekh, the Skullfaces AND the time window! It's amazing! My biggest respect to EVERYONE involved!
The commitment to make as much as possible pratical effects really warms my heart!
Can't help noticing how recent films and TV shows that have really drawn people in - Dune, The Expanse, Everything, Everywhere All At Once - they all use a great deal of practical effects rather than just CGI. I'm so glad that Doctor Who continues in that tradition. I'm not surprised really. There's a very long habit in Doctor Who of doing this. But it's gratifying that they have really leant into it.
I haven't seen that many Classic Who stories, but I HAVE seen Pyramids Of Mars and The Reveal was incredible, I'm so happy this show is good again
My first exposure to Classic Who was that episode, as it featured on one of the Sarah Jane Adventures DVDs!
I haven't seen Pyramids of Mars but I did read the comics recently and he's in those and so I also went nuts.
I had the most biggest and nerdiest grin when Sutekh was revealed! :D
The Time Window and the way it glitches and the sounds it makes, reminds me of Detroit: Become Human, when you play as Connor and you use the "reconstruct" to find out what happened at a crime scene.
Can we appreciate Kate looking like a fine glass of wine in this episode
Can’t believe she’s 60 next year! She doesn’t look any older than 45
@@aaronl5793Well, Kate *is* like wine. She gets better with age.
Really glad we got some more down-to-earth moments with Kate. I've always felt she needs more moments where she relates her upbringing as the Brig's daughter to the Doctor.
When Kate starts thinking about her father telling her stories about the Doctor, there's this feeling like he left out a few things! The feeling of losing someone in your command isn't something you can appreciate from hearing about it, you literally have to experience it! And once you do a part of the romanticized feeling about the Doctor is gone. You know at some point he's going to hop on his TARDIS and run off to elsewhere. There's a look in Kate's eyes when all this reality pops in her mind and you can read it on her face clear as day. 😔
Lost a few people with the toymaker.
I really wish Martha Jones would be a "guest," as well as Ace, or even Grace (8th Dr).
Yeah they should bring Martha back
They should bring Sergeant Benton back too. He fought alongside the Brigadier. And the actor who plays him (John Levene) is still alive.
They can’t use Grace.
Ace came back a while ago in Power of the Doctor. Tegan was there too.
@@stephenmurphy2212Yes. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If they do end up doing the UNIT spin-off, this needs to happen in at least one episode.
The VFX on the time window looks REALLY GOOD! Kudos to the VFX and the Production team
What a cliffhanger. And yes, the internet was very quickly onto that reveal, but it's still exiting to see it happen on the screen.
As far as I can tell, it spread from the leaks. We who stayed unspoiled with the leaks got a real shocker when it aired.
@@haydenhall7760 I was slightly spoiled by a review, but it was still epic to see.
Ruby must be Horus reincarnation. Horus, Egyptian god with the power of the sun rays. Ruby Sun-Day, just as Horus who defeated Sutekh in the ancient Egypt almost 3.000+ years ago.
Actually, Ruby's age as shown in Boom is 3082 years.
Holy Falcon Hieroglyphs! 😲
Ruby's age would be because Boom is set over 2000 years in the future...
But the rest of the theory seems plausible! And it could explain why we're set to get a new companion next series rather than Ruby
Thought she was coming back in addition to the new companion, though.
I love that this episode put me at the edge of my seat and I was like what the whole time and also that oh that theory was right my goodness
A working chameleon circuit and they could have just left the tennisball be a tennisball
Saluting a tennis ball took me out. 😂
As @a 65 year old man I apologise if I have not voiced my opinion before now, but I must say that those that are accusing Dr Who of becoming too woke are WRONG! It has EVOLVEd with the TIMES! I can remember watching Dr Who since the second Doctor, and have LIVED through the changes in society that Dr Who reflects so well. Yes, there are some weak episodes in each re-incarnation, but to say that the Dr Who production team is trying to please the. Woke brigade with the latest re-incarnation is utter rubbish. LOOk at the FACTS people! We now live in a society where if you do not wish to watch an episode when it is broadcast, you can CATCh UP on various platforms. Viewing habits have changed dramatically sine the mid 2000’s re-boot! Overnight/weekly figures are NOT going to replicate those of the 2000’s, or the 60’s,70’s,80’s!
I consider myself quit au-fait with technology, and can agree width message that Dot and Bubble is conveying. That doesn’t make it ‘woke’! You see examples all of the time where younger generations cannot communicates effectively because that
Yes spend too much time on social media. In addition, yes, there is still a problem with accepting each other’s differences, whether they be colour, gender etc., but the problem will not be resolved by people voicing opinions on social media, they are resolved by talking to each other face to face!
As a 65 Year old white British man, I applaud the fact that we have had a female Dr Who, now followed by a black Dr Who! Ok, some of the stories haven’t been the best, but that’s the melting pot of life! Previous incarnations of Dr Who have all had their dud story lines!
GIVE THE SERIES A BREAK! The fact that it has lasted long nough to celebrate it’s 60th anniversary should be applauded!!!
You reflect the logic of every human being that has a tiny ounce of compassion has. Thank you for posting this comment, it's the best comment I've seen in ages. If more people "changed with the times" like you clearly have, this world would be a much better place. Thank you, again.
This 58 year old fan agrees with you totally!
I totally agree. Well said. I'm a 53 year old female who was introduced to Doctor Who just as it was ending it's first run. From the US and it speaks to me in a way American science fiction shows didn't. It has changed and evolved just like society around it has. But then everyone has to be an armchair critic (nitpicking), instead of just enjoying the ride.
I'm 64, and am not even sure there are weak episodes - the fan base stretches from 3 to 100+ and the episodes that don't appeal to me so much are usually favourites for my youngest grandkids. We regularly do Doctor Who evenings when they visit.
Hear hear!
The first episode i watched of classic who was the final part of Pyramids of Mars. i remember seeing sutekh and being scared. Well done guys hes still scary
I can't wait for next week's finale. It needs to be about 6 hours long to be able to tie up all the lose ends in a nice, neat bow. It is going to feel like an eternity before the next season starts back up. More Dr who please!!!!
This was a great episode and it was great to watch it on my birthday!
I wanna say Susan Twist was phenomenal in this!
The best episode of this series by a HUGE margin. Epic.
As soon as I saw Sutekh returned and after watching the episode four or five times. I went back and did a rewatch of the Pyramids of Mars episode with Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen(R.I.P. Sarah Jane Smith).
Love the practical effects
A brilliant episode all in all, the type that sticks in till your head until next week.
Really fascinating stuff, was anyone else reminded of the Sycroax prosthetics from the Christmas invasion with 10?
Yes, and it also looks like UNIT has stolen the blueprints for Stark Tower... 🤨
@@TheWanderingFire 👀
HOW DID YOU DO THIS TO ME BRINGING BACK SUETEKH FROM 50 YEARS AGO 😂😂😂😂😂
Read the comics. Sutekh is in them.
Are you seriously telling me, the actress who played Susan in THAT twist, was the actress Susan Twist 😂
I hope the Vlinkx gets the ability to move around and have a little freedom ❤
One of the best episodes
I know nothing about doctor who before The Doctor and Rose but I am intrigued to learn more about these old villains and monsters!
I love to see these very complex sci-fi tech being basically all practical effects! It's really hard to find this today and I just really appreciate it. Also, mad respect for the arts department, the costumes, make up, prosthetics, sets... EVERYTHING is absolutely FANTASTIC!! Can't wait for the next episode 🔥
Most hype ep ever
I really hope the Vlinx is one of those things that's just never explained
2:14 ~ 🥎
I'm wondering how they're going to explain this. In Pyramid of Mars, Sutekh was a member of a godlike race of aliens, but not gods like Maestro or the Toymaker were. But here, they're saying he's like the oldest and the first of the pantheon, as well as the most powerful, so that's more than a race of godlike aliens. Perhaps getting killed in the time corridor changed him into a god? Or perhaps the one we saw in 1975 was merely an avatar for the real Sutekh? I can't wait to find out!
Just looking at the Vlinx overloads my claustrophobia!
4:35 I can't believe how far Doctor Who has come since 1963 or 1988 when I started watching properly, but I also can't believe how far Unreal Engine has come since I played Unreal 1 in 1999! My faves!
It'd been a while since I saw Pyramids of Mars and didn't catch who it was until I looked him up!! Now I'm so excited!!! I've been waiting on his return as long as I have for the Toymaker!!! :D
These feel more like Confidential than Unleashed.
Bouhaha the tennis ball. Brilliant. It is amazing how they use practical effects. So much better than 100% CGI.
gibbons is my favorite he is precious to me. what a lad
Loved the episode, perfect timing to have Sutekh back. Never saw this coming, was in shock afterwards but so happy!
Honestly, the second half of the episode was so good that I'd forgotten whatever is going on with Flood.
The time window was AWESOME big time, I thought it was the definitive high light of the episode maybe the series
MARVELOUS, EVERYTHING
I really loved the VFX segment of the BTS. I'd love to see more of that in the future.
Sutekh’s reveal reminded me a lot of Gozer’s resurrection in Ghostbusters: Afterlife in the best way. Loved it.
Amazing episode
Loved it!
Oh my God! Millie so sweet!
RTD PLEASE do more with The Vlinx!! It needs more personality. Like a Star Wars Druid that you can't help but love even if it has no dialog or facial features. They have so much personality. That's what we need from The Vlinx. Please! ..... also, while you're reading this (🤞🤞🤞) RIVER SONG Spin Off pretty pretty, please 🙏 ❤

This was the best episode of the new series by far hopefully episode 8 tops this one
4:06 - is it Susan Twist under the hood?
Nah its gonna be Mrs Flood

Very good indeed 🎉🎉❤❤
but isn't sutekh not just a "powerful alien" whereas Toymaker and Maestro are transdimensional beings?
No, he’s part of the pantheon along with the others
@@AwesomeSauce11823 not in Pyramids of Mars?
Maybe the Sutekh body, with the family drama and all, was just another vessel like Susan Triad.

I just re-watched the prologue to Pyramid of Mars and it says that the Osirians, of which Sutekh is one, were so advanced and powerful that "they became like gods. As well as developing technology and science, the Osirians developed powers of pure thought bending the physical world to their will by the power of their minds alone. As they grew in power, so they grew in wisdom... all but one. His name was Sutekh." (from the Pyramids of Mars Prologue)
On the last episode when they are rewatching in the Time Window when the doctor comes out of the tardis the door is left open when he come back the door is closed so it the woman pointing at the tardis!
The Time Windows is the same as the Star Trek Holodeck room right?
I can’t wait for the finale!!!
i would love to see that unreal engine spot in VR to just experience it. hell. make it a game where the doctor needs your help. you need to stand still for this to do this so its PERFECT
Al Kang is a genius
Great Episode but I almost laughed out loud when the CGI cloud transformed into the big rat muppet.🤣🤣🤣
Fingers crossed that the next big bad is Omega
The time window was reminiscent of a holodeck like on Star Trek which, honestly, I thought gave it more credibility as weird as that sounds to say.
"Oh. A dog. That's cute. Anybody in this room afraid of dogs? Raise your hand. Come on, now, be honest. By the way are you house trained? Because the last thing I want is for my men to be cleaning up your droppings while they're working with me to help stop you and send you back to wherever you came." - Kate Stewart
This episode brought me right back to watching the doctor on Sunday nights on PBS in America with all the neighbor kids. We were transfixed.
honestly was shocked of how short this season is but honestly I get it, the VFX/sets/props I can imagine it's very expensive
The episode title was Legend of Ruby Sunday but it didn't revealed neither her mother or doctor's granddaughter Susan!
I was expecting to learn something about Ruby in all honesty!
Very good, RTD doesnt know the difference between an anagaram and a portmanteau though
Neither do you. You got that from twitter
Literally Unwatchable
@ajrein4226 You can believe whatever you want, but I did not need twitter to explain my first language to me.
@@alfiea1211Because they didn’t use anagram correctly?
Its a bit of a stretch, but i suppose its still somewhat of an Anagram, being SUETECH becoming SUTECH abnd then the C swtiching to a K making SUTEKH, not as well woven as YANA but still such a brilliantly executed twist imo
This was an awesome episode!
come a long way since the classic series ended in 1989
nice to see Jeremy Vine getting some work on Doctor Who as the Vlinx (anybody else think that?)
good behind the scenes
Am I the only one who was a bit disappointed with Suhtek’s reveal? Like, the pyramids of mars is great. But it is just a “Hey look, that’s a thing from an old episode that you remember”. And I’m not one of those people who wants to hate on anything, because, I love doctor who, and I’ve loved this new series. But it does surprise me that no one else seems to have felt the same way about this reveal. Maybe I’m just wrong…
Epiccc
great to an updated sutekh made by cgi orginally from pyramids of mars with Tom Baker i hope Lenny Rush comes back again as a unit scientific adviser and great to see JEMMA REDGRAVE AGAIN
If they add a bit more side characters to UNIT i can see a spinoff series like Torchwood. They already have the base for it
don't get me wrong I loved the ep but what happened to Shirley the scientific advisor??? why was she replaced?? I'm still upset about that lol
Simply filming schedule conflicts. Apparently her character's not been retired, and I imagine we will see her again :)
I think i heard Tom Bakers laughter when sutek was laughing. Was that him?
7:10 why not bringing back Kamelion instead?
14th doctor and his Tardis HAS to be in this final right??
What if his is infected too?
RTD did say he had no plans to bring 14 back in and he considered him firmly parked and retired. Then again, he lied about Susan Twist too, so who knows
