Living in Norway, the best tent I have found for wild camping in unknown places has to be semi-free standing, tents can be like clothing so you need to dress for the occasion :)

I bought a 2-man Vango Force Ten CN Mk 2 tent, from "Blacks" in Plymouth, in 1978. That had the Orange inner with Built-in Rubber Groundsheet/Tray and the Green Nylon Flysheet. The pegs were Corrugated Steel V-channel with 'ears'. The Groundsheet had Six Rubber eyes - one at each corner and another two mid-way along the tray. The Flysheet also had six rubber eyes which were elongated and stretchy. A pair of Guy-ropes were fitted half-way up the flysheet and held the flysheet away from the inner tent. There were clips which also held the inner tent in tension, so the walls didn't flap in the breeze. The Poles were alloy with elastic bungies to hold them together. It used an A-frame arrangement at the Entrance, with a Ridge-pole and a Single support at the narrow end of the tent, which was Wedge shaped. Additional Twin Guy ropes were fitted at the top of the A-frame and at the foot end of the tent. The suggested method of erection was hang the tent from the ridge pole and A-frame, then add the Flysheet, but a simple modification meant I could erect the flysheet on the poles first, then hang the inner if it was raining; starting at the Foot of the tent and working towards the Door. My only complaint about the tent, was that I couldn't sit upright in it, even at the tall end, as although I'm only 5 ft 8 inches tall, I'm short in the legs and long in the body. At 3.6 Kilos, it was a bit heavy as a One-man carry, especially when also carrying my Army Issue 'Green Slug' sleeping bag. It got twenty years of quite heavy-duty use, from Wild camping on Dartmoor, to various Folk Festivals and even wild camping in Wales. It lived up to its name of Force Ten and even survived a Force Twelve on Two occasions; one on Dartmoor and the other on the Brecon Beacons. I last used it five years ago and it is still in very good condition, as the Rubber tray hasn't perished and all fixing points are still intact. After every use, it gets cleaned and thoroughly dried and then put away folded - not packed - in a cool dry place. I can't remember what I paid for it, but it wasn't cheap at the time and it's been proven to be worth every penny. Russ. Hampshire. UK.

It makes me laugh when it is classed as an affordable cheap tent. £250 for a tent ! Are people nuts.
I am not a cheapscape but that's ridiculous. I have always used cheap tents that have done the job. I paid 65 for a three man tent in an emergency and it withstud horrendous winds in the west of Scotland.

From South Africa clock in number 41 😂
You and me both..... I snagged Kestrel III made by Back-packer......
44 years ago ! In absolute pristine condition, and by pristine , as it left the factory....
Came with the Y adaptor accessory, still has the assembly sheet.!
Back then, the Kestrel by Back-packer was used on mega adventures such as Killy.
I had the Kestrel Ii when I was in my early teens and when in the mountains, a situation developed, and that tent probably saved my life.
Like every tent there are small improvements, like toggle chords on the zippers, a second bag, (1 for the fly, 1 for the inner) I've put the original pegs aside to preserve them and substituted steel pegs.... the originals are alliminium alloy, and refreshed my memory of how the poles nest, one inside the other in groups of 3, and there are a few tiny things that I remember, like one wrap of insulation tape round the rubber feet to keep them in the poles....
Aaaaaaaa memories 44 years old, and I opened and pitched it, for the second time in the tents life.... ❤
    Have to brag....
    Pitched it today

Looks very similar to the Helm 2, Vango could be onto a winner there. They’re not the only Helm copycats though, at the outdoor expo OlPro had the Ranger 2 on display for just £87, but of course had lesser materials and heavier pack weight for that outlay.

Vango tents, the best ever value for money & performance. I had a Vango Mk1 tent, lasted 37 years of hard use in all weathers / seasons / environments. UV finally degraded the flysheet, no longer waterproof, and, you know what? They wouldn't take it back under guarantee. Can't understand why.
So now, after extensive research, since 2017 I have a Vango Xenon U/L 2 person tent, just BRILLIANT design, 4 season. Sadly due to disintegrating knees and age related issues, I can be sure that it will outlast me, if only that I can't use it like I had hoped

I like the idea of the reinforcement ties/straps for only when you need them, could you not just tuck the loose string under the floor, until you hopefully never need it, but yeah its the UK so you probably will. As for that style of tent door, its handy to have a length of tent pole from one of your other squillions of tents you been sent for free (or a trekking pole) or maybe a wissened old stick to tie out and use as a mini awning, somewhere to sort of cook your beans under 👍

Being honest, I wouldn't be swapping my Coleman Cobra for it. Two doors, sturdy as hell, yes, the Cobra is heavier but I'll take that trade. More room & half the price. I know, Coleman aren't the most desirable tents but I've been using the 2 & 3 for last couple of years and they just work for me. Never had an issue with water ingress or condensation. Maybe if I was going on a multi-day hike, that extra 900 grms might make me rethink my choice though 😁

  • @Ash12530
    @Ash12530 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

You forgot to measure the height, cos if you did do you’d of seen that Vango have blatantly lied about that particular spec!! It’s actually only 87-88cm tall at the highest point on the inner tent, (outer tent is only 97cm tall) it should be 95cm and 105cm according to the supplied spec sheet diagram!?..🤷🏻‍♂️
That’s a huge variance, I think they should of stated 90/100cm which would have been a little more accurate…
However, after testing it out up a hill the other night I can confirm that it’s not (I’m 5-10”) an issue for me.
I’d describe it as spacious but cosy because of that lower height!
Reminds me of the dens I used to make as a kid, and as such is currently my favourite shelter out of the eight I now own.. 👍🏻

I certainly wouldn't want to set up this tent on a hilltop like a thousand feet up or 2,000 ft as for the price, that's too much to pay my backpack A tent is much cheaper smaller enough room for me to lay stretched out in the sleeping bag and using a rucksack as a pillow this backpack tent is great for a thousand ft 2,000 ft. Great for the beach and it's less. It's less than £70 pounds or less in sales. God bless
