Stop asking for a diesel power wagon. I have a Cummins, you don't want a truck with 5,000 lbs over the front axle off-road. You also don't want a diesel that can only tow 10k pounds. It's limited to that by the soft suspension, "so put airbags on or stiffen the springs" ... Then you'll just have a sticker package with a rough ride, little flex and an on-road design. It would be nothing more than a sticker package with some lockers, like the AT4, like the Ford Tremor. The suspension capabilities of the Power Wagon is one of the defining features of it, combined with the unlocking sway bar, coil springs, locking diffs and winch make it far above and beyond these Ford or GMC competitors. You compromise any of those 4 things and you're going to have a disappointing on-road truck with a sticker package.
Exactly! I'm a big off roader and back in my day I watched a S 10 blazer and a 1500 Z71 easily go places in mud that a F350 powestroke couldn't go! And the F 350 had two sizes bigger than stock tires!!
Then why not make it a half ton truck? I know the half tons don't have a proper front axle. I mean simply derate it like they did the mega cab 1500. The problem people have with it is it being called a HD and having no HD capability.
This is usually the case with GM vehicles, polarizing at first but they grow on you. It's something different to look at and not a carbon copy of the competition. So many segments (like compact crossovers) look the same with different badges.

7:22 To answer your question about where the Diesel for the power-wagon is... Putting a diesel in an off-road package truck is a terrible idea: 1. Weight: Heavier on the front end makes it more likely to dip lower on obstacles (harder smacks) when the weight is shifting/bouncing over rocks. More likely to break ball joints, steering linkage, rims, and tires. Less balanced weight (more up front) makes it less stable on obstacles. The heavier engine also puts more weight up HIGH making it less stable off-road. 2. Power band: Diesels put down power after spooling up a turbo. At low RPM this can take several seconds before delivering power, and several seconds to STOP delivering power after lifting the pedal. This is VERY BAD for offroad driving. A good ole fashion naturally aspirated small block V8 has way more instantaneous torque available at idle-1500RPM than a diesel, and the ability to quench that power output instantly by closing a throttle plate. For driving technical offroad situations that is FAR SUPERIOR. For yanking someone out of a ditch or rocking yourself out of a ditch, the NA Gas engine is a better solution all day long. Turbo Diesel's are much better suited to highway towing applications where their STEADY STATE CONTINUOUS BROADBAND POWER delivery is far superior (especially at elevation). On a trail, there is nothing "steady" about the power requirements or the power delivery of a diesel. The choice to keep a traditional gas engine in the Power Wagon demonstrates competence on Dodge's part. Ford would be smart to offer their new 7.4L gaser in an HD off-road edition, NOT the powerstroke.
Reminds me of why I dumped my 2015 Silverado for a 2019 Ram, their interior just looks and feels cheap and their electronic systems have constant issues.
@Matt France - Nailed it. Engineering is VERY complex and well-thought-out these days on American pick-up trucks. Throwing the 6.7L Cummins in the Power Wagon changes its formula end-to-end. The Power Wagon simply needs an optional supercharged 6.4L Hemi or upcoming 7.0L Hemi V8. Yes, mileage will suffer compared to a diesel option as well as max tow, but the Power Wagon is a true off-roader, unlike the Trail Boss and AT4 which are just marginally off-road enhanced trucks. In smaller off-roaders where towing, cooling, and other heavy-duty beef isn't needed, light diesels make a lot of sense for their low-end torque and efficiency, where only a few hundred extra pounds of engine mass doesn't kill front suspension capabilities.

I have a hunch that GM diesel mechanics will be replacing quite a few fuel systems now that the Def fill is next to the diesel fill. It was not even a thought when the fill was under the hood. I know it sounds dumb, but a big issue in diesel land is putting Def in the diesel fill hole. The nozel is smaller and when you're not use to it, you got big problems!!! This happened to a close friend of mine and believe it or not, his insurance covered it...was called fuel contamination. Check that one out before you borrow your truck to someone.. like your spouse!
Here's a tip from a retired long distance truck driver from Australia. if the vehicle is equipped with an engine or exhaust brake, USE the damn thing ALL THE TIME. towing or not towing. in the long run it will save you money on brake pads as it will extend their lives. America, the only place in the world that a 'hand brake' is called an emergency brake, drivers reuse to drive an automatic as a 'manual' to help reduce wear on the engine and exhaust brakes are for show.
My truck has regular black towhooks, I just removed them and painted them black now I have an offroad truck. I also added a couple offroad stickers I printed off to make it completely offroad capable.
It’s not just a branded by Allison. Allison adds a HD clutch pack ( critical for low RPM high torque) and specific tuning and cooling which has been the weak point for Ford and GM HD diesel pickups for many years.
The Fast Lane Truck I would love to see how the 10 speed compares to the 6 speed pulling the same load in the same conditions. Accelerating, exhaust brake etc...
I’d love to buy a power wagon! But there’s no way I’m spending that much just to buy some gas hog and have single digit mpg when towing. I also understand that the Cummins just is bad idea too. Why can’t ram build a super charged v8 or a hellcat motor that would give more power and better fuel economy. I am not spending 70k and get 12 mpg daily driving and 8 or 9 towing a camper. I can spend a little more and get the AT4 with duramax. Now just gotta figure how to add winch without messing with the front camera 🤔
No, it’s an Allison tuned/upgraded. It’s the Ford/GM co-developed 10 speed that’s had an Allison clutch pack and input and tail shaft upgrades. It has nothing to do with branding, they just took an already strong trans and made it a bit stronger.
GM/Ford transmission is a half ton transmission, which is different, GM is built their own with the approval of Allison, which is why they call it Allison branded
It would be nice if GM offered a PW competitor. Put the new Allison 10 speed behind the new 6.6 gasser, offer true locking front and rear diffs, upgraded transfer case, couple inch lift with more articulation, and a factory 15k Warn winch.
The single arm mirrors aren't bad, I prefer the dual arm on my 2016 Silverado, but please put them back at the bottom of the A pillar where they should be. I don't like them on the door nor do I believe them coming out of the door will not cause body damage over time with snow and ice getting in behind them. Where I live we'll be due our first snow fall first week of October and will have it through April, I guess time will tell...
They could level it like the the Ford tremor is supposed to be. Above all, my point is that GMC is asking a lot for AT4 branding but not really making it “off road” capable. Other than color matched bumpers, different rims, badges, and skid plates what are you getting for almost 80k
Wow really love the look of this, so modern and aggressive, but I stay loyal my lifetime fav truck the Silverado, The 2500HD TrailBoss is also a good one. My fav.
This seems to be a very nice truck. I have been wondering if anybody is going to make a small truck that is 4wd with a low stants (like the 91 s10) that a person can get into and out of with no problem. Everybody has gone to riding high on larger tires and higher ground clearance. It is not comfortable to get in and out of.
Nope everyone wants these bloated over-sized trucks to cruise the mall parking lot in unfortunately they left the working class out when the automakers stopped making simple compact pickups for actually using for work. Don't know about anyone else but you need a ladder to reach over the side of today's truck beds to get stuff in and out of them, pretty ridiculous.
I think the new GMC HD is very striking from the outside, but that interior, especially for a top of the line Denali just looks 10 years old, especially compared to the new Ram.. I do like the heads-up display though.
For those of us who don’t tow but haul modern heavy 5000 lb truck campers, can you do a review on max payload with these trucks? IKE gauntlet mpg with heavy TC weight?
Gm, please, PLEASE, stop making the front bumpers 4 inches off the ground. Anyone that buys a truck does NOT care about that extra 0.0002 mpg you get by having an air dam that scrapes the ground. First thing I did when I got my truck was pull that off and cut the tabs off, my wrx had better front bumper clearance then my z71. And anyone who has had a 2014 wrx knows what I’m talking about.
I just saw a 2020 2500 AT4 at the dealership that had only 1400 lbs payload. I am trying to wrap my head around what options make a 1500 lbs weight difference between that truck and the one featured in this video.
@Roscoe Dogg I did not recall the GVWR it was the 1400 pound payload that stuck out to me. I'm going to assume that it has the same GVWR as the trucks you saw, and then it was just optioned out in some way that ate up another 1500 lbs
I do agree that the electronic disconnects and hidden winch are top notch on the Dodge Power Wagon. But I have a serious question. Why do you think that the solid front axle on the Dog is better than the IFS GM trucks when it comes to off-road situations? There are countless vehicles out there with IFS and/or 4 wheel independent suspension set ups that not only keep up with solid axle vehicles, but even exceed their capabilities, in both in stock form and heavily modified.
@@clinte9897 yes....you will not find a better transmission. I see what we do to them in our test stands and no one in real world situations will come close to what they are put through. Even though they are not a "true" Allison, they have all the specs from us.

Most offroad packages don't give you anything offroad useful at all, a limited slip or locker if you are lucky, but most times its just some cute little badges and some shocks that make the vehicle ride like shit.
William Todd my 2017 F-150 has the FX4 package and it’s a good amount taller than the 2wd variant. Also it has skid plates, e locking diff, hill descent control, 18” wheels, and off road tuned shocks. I’ve driven a loaner 2wd and it rides completely different. The 2wd was much stiffer and offered better highway stability but sucked on crappy bumpy roads in comparison to my truck.
I traded in a 2016 GMC 3500 dually diesel for a 2020 GMC AT4. The visibility from inside this truck is much better than my old truck and I'm glad they lost the front air dam and raised the DEF tank. I see they have the cargo capacity on your video as 3862 lbs. Not sure how that vehicle is equipped but mine with the diesel and 4WD is only rated for 2400 lbs. Disappointing while looking at truck campers. Overall I really like the truck but that overhead camera is a little discerning. I feel like I'm being watched. Where does that view come from?
Does any guy here honestly think it’s safe to tow over 20,000 lbs with these trucks? I tow on average 10-12k. Occasionally I get into the 14-16k range and let me tell you I know I’m not stopping anytime soon. I just feel these truck manufacturers are all about putting out numbers. Anyone agree?
michael denave I get what ur saying but larger frames, larger brakes, bigger motors with exhaust brakes gets you the bigger towing numbers and all the mfg are headed that way toward big rigs
I have a class "A" CDL. Trailers over 3,500lbs are supposed to have their own brakes. I have done heavy haul loads that were up to 227,000lbs combination. The trailer had 16 wheels. And the brakes of the trailer will stop the truck! The brakes for the truck are for the truck and the cargo within the truck.
Mr Sunshines first of all your sentence structure is terrible. A 8,200 lb truck towing 40 tons? And I’m the dummy? Last it’s always interesting why some guys on the internet have to shoot there mouths off for no reason. I live in Orange County NY if you ever want to talk trucks in person .
I actually really like the exterior styling of the gmc. It’s waaay better than the Silverado in my opinion, but those mirrors I just can’t bring myself to like. I’ve seen a few around town and even in person I still just find them goofy looking and just ruin a good looking truck.
You lost me when you said diesel and Power Wagon. We all know it's a purpose-built truck and FCA engineers have always stated why. I do like the GMC 2500 AT4 but if I was really into towing I'd have just gone with a 3500.
Can someone explain a discrepancy I see in the video? At 1:45 the trucks sticker says the maximum payload is 2998 lbs. At 16:45 the placard hanging from the logs states maximum payload as 3862 lbs.
Tire size on the At4 with the 20 inch wheel option is a 34.1 inch total diameter. The so called 35 on the Tremor is 34.8.
I remember when it first came out and that was exactly why they did not have them together
Those beautiful yellow side markers would be the first mod to go (if I could afford a GMC diesel less than 10 years old)
Those black rims are boss
SO much better than the Silverado. I really do like the "big rig" look of that front end, as well. Well done, GMC!
WOW!!! that black one is Dreamy!!! I have an 2018 Duramax Midnight Edition HD and love it but Jeez got me wanting this now.
One of the best videos I’ve watched on the new GMC thank you
Here's a tip from a retired long distance truck driver from Australia. if the vehicle is equipped with an engine or exhaust brake, USE the damn thing ALL THE TIME. towing or not towing. in the long run it will save you money on brake pads as it will extend their lives. America, the only place in the world that a 'hand brake' is called an emergency brake, drivers reuse to drive an automatic as a 'manual' to help reduce wear on the engine and exhaust brakes are for show.
Handbrake. Haven’t heard that since the 70s when they moved it to the floor.
Jonny's design is badass!!!! Build one...
I see GMC has not fixed their touchscreen from 2017.
You can still see the HUD with polarized shades, no issues.. I have the new HC 2500HD.
That response of the camera was great 😂🤣😂🤦♂️
My truck has regular black towhooks, I just removed them and painted them black now I have an offroad truck. I also added a couple offroad stickers I printed off to make it completely offroad capable.
GM formed Allison decades ago. They sold off most of the company to the Carlyle group several years ago.
Ooooooh so the Off-Road AT4 is designed for mostly Towing.... glad he said that!
....alright then Tremor vs. Power Wagon it is then.
7:45 0-60
It’s not just a branded by Allison. Allison adds a HD clutch pack ( critical for low RPM high torque) and specific tuning and cooling which has been the weak point for Ford and GM HD diesel pickups for many years.
Literally all I wanted from this video was to see the Gauge cluster under acceleration, but no romans face is more important
Our fault. Next time we’ll show the speedo.
Taking deliver of my 2020 GMC 3500HD AT4 this coming Monday(5-11-2020)...
10k is extra for a paint job and skid plates? They didn’t give us the 2 inch lift.
Dana Reynolds A lift would sacrifice towing capability because it would squat too much. After all it is a hd truck made for towing
They could level it like the the Ford tremor is supposed to be. Above all, my point is that GMC is asking a lot for AT4 branding but not really making it “off road” capable. Other than color matched bumpers, different rims, badges, and skid plates what are you getting for almost 80k
Dana Reynolds That’s true but in my opinion the at4 is the best looking trim. Probably not worth the extra money like you said though
I'll tow more than rock climb down here in the south. Plus, I like black interior, easy to clean interiors. So AT4 for me.
Wow really love the look of this, so modern and aggressive, but I stay loyal my lifetime fav truck the Silverado, The 2500HD TrailBoss is also a good one. My fav.
there seems to be some subtleties between the gmc at4 and the denali but also do the chevy 2500 hd along side the 2. Would love to see it!
I love that part about visibility
I think the new GMC HD is very striking from the outside, but that interior, especially for a top of the line Denali just looks 10 years old, especially compared to the new Ram.. I do like the heads-up display though.
For those of us who don’t tow but haul modern heavy 5000 lb truck campers, can you do a review on max payload with these trucks? IKE gauntlet mpg with heavy TC weight?
Real review with that infotainment center lol
Total junk
@Roscoe Dogg 100 percent. Talked extensively with the salesman about that truck, while I made fun of its tiny payload.
@Roscoe Dogg I did not recall the GVWR it was the 1400 pound payload that stuck out to me. I'm going to assume that it has the same GVWR as the trucks you saw, and then it was just optioned out in some way that ate up another 1500 lbs
This content is why I subscribe. How is the 10 speed transmission? Smooth as silk I’ve heard
There must be a c8 Vette in there! Awesome!
Darn, that’s not cool!
I have absolutely no use for a truck but I would love the crew cab HD at4 in black
I work at Allison Transmission. The transmission in the GM product is NOT a true Allison transmission. They have our specs, but that is where it ends.
Michael Partin well are they worth a crap?
@@clinte9897 yes....you will not find a better transmission. I see what we do to them in our test stands and no one in real world situations will come close to what they are put through. Even though they are not a "true" Allison, they have all the specs from us.
Nice review Roman👍
They need to upgrade to Falcon Shocks, NATO tires and manual dif lockers
Love you guys but have to admit I'm not as excited to see new videos as o once was. Seems like same thing mentioned in video after video. I get need for content but how many times do I need shown block heater plug on GMC? That's just an example
To bad GMC stopped making regular cabs for those of us that use our trucks to make a living
Just priced one on the web. $71k. I’m sure you could get that down but still, that’s a lot of money.
Camera switch malfunction...an unfortunate sign of things to come with gms and cheap electronics...😣
Everyone makes it as cheap as possible these days. That's why you stick with the older simpler trucks.
LOL "Works like a charm!" Lets see how well everything works in just five years.. So complex.
Hey now! Gaaaaaaaaaryyyyyyyyyy
@@Rocksolidbullys Completely agree. They all do it, and older is awesome.
@@BullittKid08 hahaha yeah from when I listened to stern.
you talk to them but never ask what happens when you open the upper tailgate step with a hitch in
So I drive over that Jackson Hole pass on about a daily basis, during your testing did you guys take it over? How did it do? I’m bummed I missed you guys! I love your channel and would’ve loved to have met you guys!!
Do yall not consider a FX4 package as an offroad package
By far the nicest looking truck I've seen yet
Anyone agree?
michael denave I get what ur saying but larger frames, larger brakes, bigger motors with exhaust brakes gets you the bigger towing numbers and all the mfg are headed that way toward big rigs
michael denave Most people towing over 15k are pulling slow. Farmers etc. Not 70mph+. But I absolutely understand where you are coming from.
Wow. I love the AT4 HD. but we really want to see it on the IKE doing what it was made for TOWING huge loads Love your videos thx for sharing ....paul
Love this channel
Well how does it tow while loaded...well it's not a sports car but ya "its ok" lol!! 🙄🙄. Really reviews love it!!! Great really video.
You need a winch if your gonna get stuck. GMC wont get stuck lol
Should have asked what engineer forgot to put a feature in so tailgate won’t hit the towbar
With all of the layoffs and plants closings, I will never buy a GM product again
Cool then more people can get laid off and more plants can close. You're so smart!
Totally deflected the exhaust issue 😉
Other than the mirrors I don’t mind it.
Nice, I’m amazed the screen didn’t pop out on the 4th tap
GMC outside look A inside look C. Ram outside look A inside look A. Ford Tremor Outside look A inside look B
You lost me when you said diesel and Power Wagon. We all know it's a purpose-built truck and FCA engineers have always stated why.
I do like the GMC 2500 AT4 but if I was really into towing I'd have just gone with a 3500.
People that need cameras to drive a truck should not be driving a truck.
jreyman This is a moronic statement.
Without the 20 inch wheel option the overall diameter on the At4 is only 33.2 inches. I cant get a long box with the Tremor package so my only option is the GMC At4 if I want my long box. Wont buy a Chevy. Lol.
Does the GM/Chevy HD trucks have the ability to adjust the gas and brake pedals?
Number pad locks are easily defeated. I'd check out the at4. What they don't know won't hurt em. LOL
