But Fords upper control arm design has articulation issues when strut body length is increased. The arms would hit the coil springs in very mild articulation off road. The Rancho shocks that come the GM off road package trucks are a joke. Nothing more than a sticker on a shock that is no better than any other stock shock. Give us something that’s rebuildable and actually controls the suspension on and off road like Fox or King if you’re going to make an “off road” truck.

    • @terrencejones9817
      @terrencejones9817 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ranchos aren't the best offroad shock, but they are tuned better for offroad than a basic stock shock. However, they will be easy to remove and upgrade. My 2014 Ford was a pain in the ass to upgrade the front strut with the stupid IWE vaccum 4x4 unit. I have a 2019 Trail boss now and it's awesome.

      They definitely should have put more into the shocks. The trailboss looks nice but its really just a leveled pickup with some factory upper control arms to get the geometry of the level right. Nothing that can't be swapped out but it sure would have been nice to see something better come stock. Same with the rebel.

      @@JsGarage did you actually have a 2014? You know that 2014 has a 1 year only front strut design? 09-13s had a large lower bushing with single bolt. That allowed removal of the strut without pulling the CV shaft from the hub and dealing with the IWE.
      2014 used a bar pin ,with 2 lower bolts. To remove the strut the CV shaft must be pushed through the hub and the IWE actuator must be removed , and then properly meshed with the hub/cv splines on reinstall. It's not impossible, but hard to do in your driveway. I did it on a hoist and it was still very time consuming. The Chevys strut unit can be removed in about 5 minutes. It's a far superior design from a serviceability standpoint.

  • @chevyon37s
    @chevyon37s 5 ปีที่แล้ว +59

    Andre... “flipping the switch” on those shocks does not allow your suspension to flex more, it merely controls compression and rebound in the shock, so it only controls how fast not how far the shock can move.

      @berkalper4742 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ok so while andre definitely didnt think this much in detail when saying that, "flipping the switch" DOES allow for more travel given a certain, fixed amount force. The adjustment, as mentioned, controls the resistance to movement of the shock, not its maximum travel range. BUT it does allow for slightly more travel given the exact same impact than when the shocks are adjusted for towing, as long as you remain within the travel range of the shocks.

    • @JsGarage
      @JsGarage 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@berkalper4742 Changing the rate doesn't mean it articulates more or less. Especially when they are just slowly going down the trail. It's articulating the same just at different rates. It's doing way more for comfort and body motion than anything else. He misspoke and that's fine but they often explain things weird. The travel is the same regardless because the rate isn't changed so much that it would limit articulation. It would be different if it was so extreme that it actually limited travel but that's not how these shocks work. The truck articulates faster or slower not more or less in this case.

      I never had much experience with the G80. The couple vehicles I've driven were older with the G80 code in the glovey, but it never worked. Not surprising as now my wife has the G80 in her Tahoe and we live up here in icy, snowy, MN. Her rear tire was on a patch of ice at a stop sign. She went to the gas as usual when that tire started spinning. Just as she was going to lift off the gas, BANG! The diff locked up and the tire on dry pavement chirped and away we went.
      We then shimmied and shook as we made the corner with the diff locked on dry pavement. What's the average life span of a G80 anyways?

When GM replaced the wimpy 10-bolt rear axle with a modified version of the 14-bolt SF axle in the half-tons , the G80 had extra space for a bigger more durable carrier. I disagree. I bought a new AT4 and I had it off road the very first week inspecting power lines for a rebuild project. Of course being new, I immediately took it for a car wash. One thing that I do like about the mechanical locker is that it is always waiting. It is not limited to 4-Lo. I was able to get through a good deal of mud in 2WD because of the G80. It is not the Ford Raptor, but with the tailgate down (and load stopper up), I can easily secure a 4X8 sheet of plywood.

      I see a lot of trucks that never leave the pavement here in Utah. I also see a lot of trucks that go off road, because that is where I go. I don't go looking for the hardest trails, but my trucks see a lot of dirt roads, and some of them are at least as rough as depicted in this video.
      There are a lot of mall cruisers here...you won't see them where I take my truck.
      $60,000? Yes, that is a lot for a truck. Just one of the reasons why I have been window shopping for about a year. I don't want to regret my purchase, so I am looking for the best truck for my needs.
      Ram is offering all of their engines across the lineup. GM needs to pull their head out, and do the same. The Trail Boss with a 6.2 or the new 3.0 diesel would be at or near the top of my list, but the AT4 has a lot of options that I don't need. It has also been reported that GM is working on an interior upgrade for 2021 (thanks to Ram).
      Right now, the Rebel with possibly the Ecodiesel is winning for me...and I don't really like diesels.

    Rebel has the electric locker from the factory at lower cost, though it just so happens TFL tricked out their Ram to cost a bit more than the AT4. Unfortunately, this makes it an apples-to-oranges comparison, but it still a great video and helps illustrate the differences as you put a bit more into your 4x4. If this course a little harder, the AT4 would start to struggle while the Rebel Rouser is just starting to get "dramatic" as the guys call it.
    Both stock AT4 and Rebel are great all-around trucks, i.e. off-road capability is impressive for how little is sacrificed for on-road characteristics. Recent improvements in A/T and M/T tire technology have helped quite a bit as well.

I think you can engage the locker in the Wrangler Rubicon in 2WD? Again I have no idea because I don't have one but you'd think it would be possible....if not its a great reason to skip all that factory crap and do aftermarket where you can engage the locker whenever you want not when a computer thinks you should LOL. I don't have to do anything with the limited slip in my Jeep it just goes wherever I point it, works great, I wonder why that gov-loc takes so much wheel spin to engage? The G80 will last longer than an electric rear blocker, and with all the extra mods on the Ram it really if any is only slightly better?? So stock for stock the GM's are better, why pay that much extra for something you can have for much less $ and the Ram especially with the mods will more than likely not last as long, AT4 and Trailboss seem to be tops.

    • @DeltaSierra426
      @DeltaSierra426 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anything will last longer if you... don't use it, lol. What's your point? If a video is all about off-roading, this is GM's best defense of the G80? The Rebel isn't slightly better; this course didn't push either truck to the limit to see who really maintains elegance. The power mods and exhaust on the Rebel don't do anything real-world in off-road terms -- they just make it more "likeable" to the guys. They could have either saved the cash or opted for more off-road investment.
      This video compares stock to modified, so there's no direct comparison at all unless comparing apples to oranges is a sound thing to do. It really just serves more of an entertainment purpose.

    It must be a competition to see which of the complex electrical systems fails first. They need a Ford product there also as their electronics are just as bad. I’m sure the Etorque in the RAM will give them fits long before the LT or the 10speed in the GM do. They are 2 of the best looking trucks on the market if that helps. I’m not sure what their point is, Lockers, good tires and a mild lift kit and the brand becomes irrelevant. You could source these parts yourself, save 10k and have the same trucks.

    As to the Auto locker..to each his own. I've never had a problem with it and the All wheel drive option is a total winner. I turn it on in the Winter and leave it on and not worry about it. Maybe you are not old enough to remember the times before E lockers, but most offroad vehicles were upgraded to mechanical style lockers and some reacted faster, great for rocks, shit for street, and some like the G80 a more for "daily use" are great for everything but rock crawling and they are not speed deactivated, But they last a long time with moderate abuse. If the objective is simply off road fun, most people use a smaller vehicle, but not always. I think it is important for these big trucks to maintain good on road capabilities though, as that's where the trucks are used the most. These comments are ridiculous. I've been reading them for the past 30 minutes and laughing my ass off. I own an AT4 and love it. It's the Swiss Army Knife of trucks in my opinion (jack of all trades, master of none situation). It does all things pretty good. And that's what I want in a truck. Shit on me for having a G80, that's fine. Its still a great truck. In the end, get the truck that fits YOU.

    Nathan's argument is that 66k isn't a lot of money but Andre's 70k is? I like the GMC but you're going to break something driving it like that just to get the rear to lock up. The locker in the RAM is worth the extra money. The RAM has way more control off road and you're less likely to break things from over-revving and lurching the vehicle.

    Ram locker killed it!!

    The Rebel is more biased toward off-road performance. The AT4 is more versatile, and can hang with the Rebel despite smaller tires and the G80, while being faster and getting better gas mileage. And who the heck buys either for purely off-road use? Very few I'd guess.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're not really trucks anymore they're luxury cars with a suitcase holder. Way too much electronic and safety gadgets and nannies than necessary only to allow those who have no business owning and driving a truck to be able to operate one without running over absolutely everything. Most of today's "Trucks" are found cruising the parking lots of the mall and Wallyworld, not actually doing anything a truck was built to do which is why there aren't any compact pickup trucks anymore people buy them for family sedans and commuter cars.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @mike a Exactly, until people stop wanting their cars full of everything including the kitchen sink prices will continue to skyrocket...what used to be a work vehicle has turned into luxury cars that just happened to come with a truck bed instead of a trunk, people don't use them as trucks they use them as family sedans.

    love the series, what about comparing the power wagon with the 4 door Rubicon as far as off roading. I am torn between which one I will get first when I can afford it.

    Ram rebel is built for off-road only whereas the gm truck has the torque, horsepower, off road capability and on road capability. I prefer the gm cause I don’t off road everyday but would still like to be well rounded in my adventures

    Power isn't everything if you don't have traction. Looks like the rebel did it with ease and the chevy did it but struggled, despite having more power

    Comparing a stock truck to a highly customized (and subsidized for a price only in the $70k range) is like comparing apples to sheep. Customize the GMC or compare a stock Ram.

    I've driven both these trucks and the Rancho setup on the AT4 is a joke - jumps and bounds like a pogo stick. The stock Bilsteins in the Rebel are smooth and refined on and off road. Miles apart on handling.

    Really you have to get out of the truck and manually change the suspension settings? I think for 70k they should've incorporated a switch on the console

    Something i did not hear them say but i have heard about the AT4 with the intake and exhaust package is it has to run Premium fuel only. I don't know if the Rebel is like this or not but that is a cost consideration for the AT4. that being said the Blue AT4 will be my next truck.

    • @kevinkowaluk5682
      @kevinkowaluk5682 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I could find the 6.2 requires premium. Looked at a couple, power/economy is nice but the price difference here in Manitoba is 20 cents a liter for premium/regular, was a deal breaker for me.

    • @okigojuryu
      @okigojuryu 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kevinkowaluk5682 that is weird that it would require premium, considering how advanced computer tech is now a days, I would think it could detune the engine if it's not getting enough octane.

    So this Chevy has the same basic "off road" package as Chevy offered 30 years ago. Rancho shocks, a skid plate, a finicky locker in the rear and some stickers. The only new stuff is the hill decent control and a leveling kit... Not that the Rebel is much better from the factory, the rear locker is better, but that's it.
    Neither truck is even close to the Raptor or the Power Wagon in capability off road, but at least TFL truck took them on harder trails than most people ever will.

    • @bennyb6071
