The AT4 is for dirt roads and the snow belt, the PowerWagon is for offroad adventure. They are two completely different vehicles to serve 2 completely different purposes. It would be like comparing a 1500 AT4 to a raptor. This truck is meant for towing on rough roads, not making its own roads. PowerWagon is a fun toy if you have lots of money, but the AT4 is wildly the more practical truck. All they need to do is give it an electronic locker in the rear and maybe an LSD in the front like the tremor. The tremor as of now is the truck to beat because that will get close enough to the PW while maintaining its hauling capability

Both are nice. The Ram is more appealing to me in my opinion, but they both are aesthetically pleasing to look at. However, on my personal opinion, and knowing heavy duty trucks, the solid axle of the Ram can handle more abuse and weight then that of the IFS of the GMC. IFS is great for on road use, but bad for off road use. You can not get the proper flex for off-roading then say the solid axle trucks like Ram and Ford.

In what scenario is 410/429 not enough power? The truck isn't sprung for heavy hauling or heavy towing, and I'm pretty sure it's plenty of power for any rock crawling you will ever due. Last time I was at Moab in my SXS there was a group of probably 10 Power Wagons there and I was stunned at their abilities in the rocks, and I'm not talking about the little piddly stuff the TFL guys were doing, I'm talking about real rock crawling with 6-7' shelfs and stuff I was going around on my RZR! The GMC would have never come close to traversing much of what they were just crawling over. Most of the Power Wagons looked to be stock or very close to stock! I was seriously impressed!

Yes, for daily driving and variable driving conditions, the g80 works fine. Works fine in my Silverado and never had an issue with traction.
My issue with it off road is that you’ve already lost traction before it kicks in, especially at crawling speeds. So a natural reaction for a driver is to give it some more throttle and then you finally grab traction. That’s a dangerous recipe on tight trails with rocks and trees on either side of you.

I came the conclusion that the PW is better for pure offroad adventures. The GMC is a more well rounded work truck with off road capabilities. Now, i used to explore in the PW, taking trails like this. But I dont bother to do that in the GMC; the ride is just too rough, it weighs to much. But while pulling the camper the GMC can get me as far back as the powerwagon, considering i'm towing a TT. Now i mountain bike the trails or ride my dual sport, instead of explore in my truck. Having owned many GM products and Now a new PW, the GM feels like a swatch watch and the pw feels like a rolex. Such a difference in feel. Both work but it feels like gm came from a vending machine. Furthermore, on my last two suburbans I needed an engine at 104,000mi and a transmission in the other at 160,000mi. While I understand that that is quite a lot of miles, they were all interstate miles and less than three years old. The leather aka plastic in both started cracking within 50,000 miles. The rubber coating on the plastic area of the steering wheel started pealing almost immediately. The dash had cracked around the airbag area after just two years and the “chrome” plastic on the body had started to bubble. While these were partially covered under warranty I find it absurd. On my PW, it is two months old. I have around 10,000 miles. The R fell off of RAM when I shut the hood. The radio will not hold its presets. The back window clicks loudly when I open it but i think that is the worst of it. It feels like such a better made vehicle. With at said, I am very skeptical of the transmission but only time will tell.

Hello boys! As usual great job! Where do I apply? Which one is better? As much as I like the Ram PW, why would I, or anyone buy a HD truck to off-road? If that was the case I’d buy a ZR2 Diesel! But that AT4 GMC HD, is very nice for all around heavy full sized pickup trucks! As it did take you through everything the PW did, without pushing any buttons, sure it rides harder, but what if you had say a nice high quality Truck Camper slid in the bed? Like a beautiful Northern Lite at around a thousandth lbs or so less than the trucks over all load capacity? That, with auxiliary fuel tank would make a great overland Camping Rig. With plenty of hauling capacity left over for a full load of liquids, a friend or significant other and maybe a child or two?

Not sure who would do this with an $80,000 new truck.....but I would take the GMC Duramax on any day- it’s a towing beast. Probably explains why it has street tires on it from the factory. Oh well.....

The Power Wagon should come with 35s off the factory. That's one of the main things anyone with a PW would want to change. 37s would be great but 35s should suffice for a factory tire for that truck. I think most of us can agree on that. Right?

I agree, but with 35" duratracs the gmc performs better on this trail as well.

It seems more like the power wagon is the best recovery vehicle for your other toys. If your Jeeps or side by sides get stuck you bring the power wagon that can tow any of your toys to the trail so you can pull them out easily

I see a lot more GMC trucks sitting along the interstates and on flatbeds than Powerwagons, That's got to mean something

@@EGGINFOOLS Since I drive for a living, I see what I see. I guess I should have worded it "GMC and Chevy Trucks in general vs Dodge Trucks" Being old school power wagon was what Dodge trucks use all be. And to add to that My last Dodge was a pile of Junk, 3 transmissions in under 60k miles. My dealer told me it was because of the way I drove it. I guess sticking to the speed limit of 35-40 mph was the wrong way. But at least it would wouldn't give up till I came to a dead stop someplace. Dead being the correct term since once you stopped it was dead in the water so to speak

It's a shame GMs off road edition truck is just an appearance package with better, but not good tires.

I’m a Chevy guy, but just bought a ‘19 Tacoma trd 6 speed. But the at4 is just like z71 now. Just an appearance package. Almost all gm trucks for the past 20 years have g80 lockers. And all the 4x4s have 4low and tow hooks. No advantage from an 03 4x4 duramax. The power wagon is clearly the winner off-road

Sure, the Power Wagon is better at Off Road from the factory but with a few upgrades on GMC and mechanical changes they would be comparable. Also worth mentioning the GMC could tow three power wagons I think. Both trucks are great for what they do and if you want to do SERIOUS off roading then buy a jeep.

You guys should compare a 80s full size pickup to a new mid size pickup just to show how much bigger trucks have gotten

Before I watched this video I knew the outcome. I'm no engineer! But to put a diesel in a power wagon, it will never be a off road truck. They would have to totally redesign it to do what the gas engine does. Way to much money if they did that. Great video even though I knew the outcome. For me me if I could only afford one it would be the AT4.
