@@overboostedgarage8744 if someone accidently puts DEF into the fuel tank and runs the engine, it will damage the fuel system to the point of needing complete replacement.

Yep, we get better mileage from out 01 than our 14 duramax and we don't have to deal with DEF and post bailout GM problems quarterly. The only downside is the 6 speed is nice for highway and the exhaust brakes on the new trucks are a game changer.
A 15% difference in fuel economy is quite surprising, but I think the test loop was too short to be conclusive. Did either truck go into regeneration during the loop?
They didn't do the test trip for the ford until it was much colder ! Everyone knows that for every 5deg in temperature drop you gain about 17% in efficiency! Witch declines dramatically after about 20%maximum gain. This was definitely not a scientific test or they would have done the test at the same time of day with equal temperatures
To accurately test the def consumption, you may consider having both trucks do a regeneration prior to fueling. My thought is if one has recently run its regeneration and the other has not could sway def test. Not a gripe jUst a thought. Great job of being as unbiased as possible.
You would take a lot of that bucking away if you moved the excavator ahead but then you may exceed your gvwr. I have this identical setup basically and I decided to buy a 550 and it’s 19,500 gvwr. Handles the load great.
Excellent test! The Duramax has a larger bore but shorter stroke than Ford's engine. Perhaps the longer stroke was able to eek out better fuel mileage at the ~1600 RPM range that both engines appeared to be running. Last I saw, the Ford's peak torque was at a lower RPM than Chevy.
Also when you haul a 308 spin it around and get the weight towards the truck it will help with the ride alot. Plus you can curl the boom more and lower your overall height
Thanks guys- nice review. I purchased my 2020 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Diesel last March based on your reviews! It has been a great truck so far. You have a great comfort Ride for what you do.
Awesome review guys! I would love to see a real towing cost of use between 7.3 gas vs 6.7 diesel in the same F series model. Set up trailer for maximum towing weight in the 7.3 and use that same towing weight in the 6.7. Compare the mpg between the two along with cost of fuels, def, and if possible the cost of oil changes to compare the real world towing cost. With that info if you want to calculate the additional cost of the diesel engine vs gas and how many miles it would take to break even that would be cool too. Thanks TFL!
Good review. The fuel mileage difference may be due to the Ford having free turning from hubs (lock/unlock hubs) and the GMC having always locked from hubs. The extra drag by the front axles could cause the mileage difference.
Chevy and for both use the same 10 speed. which truck road smoother.. and why wasn't the Ram in this series? I'm not a Ram Fan boy I'm just starting to look at them and this would have helped me make some decisions.
Like the video. When your hauling heavy like that and it's bucking move the weight a little more over the axles of the truck it will help with the bucking. As long as it's not too far forward. Also the way you had the load chained down is illegal. You can use one chain but it can't be pulling against itself. It has to have enough slack between mounting points and not pulling against itself to be considered "two separate chains". Other than that its was a good video. Waiting to see a comparison between the Ram vs Ford
I thank y’all for all you do. I have been watching your channel for some time and you do the best review of vehicle by far. Thank you and keep up the great work for us.
All the people saying that excavator is loaded too far forward need to remember where all the weight on an excavator is at. The engine and big ass counter weight is on the rear of the machine.
The harsh ride is just due to the nature of the trailer. Even with the torque tubes, flatbed trailers tend to ride harsh due to the deck being stiff, but when it does flex it travels through
usually that bounce you're getting is because of to much weight on the front axle of the trailer that is transfering the load to the hitch. Would be nice to have seen you guys adjust load as I think it was off and causing that bounce....speaking from past experience.
Mercedes doesn't make a dually. They do make a 6x6. I would have that over any Ford truck. But it's still not the same class of truck though. As for working on my car, yes I do. I don't trust anyone working on any of my cars/trucks. I use to have an Ford Lightning. I did all the work to it. The only thing it went to the stealership for was the recall on the brake master cylinder. I tried to talk them into giving me the inline fuse & I would install it myself but they wouldn't. I also have a Explorer Limited & a Fiero GT with a motor swap that I do all the work & maintenance on. My CL55 AMG is a very reliable car. No major issues with it. Ford does make some new stuff that isn't bad. If I had to buy a dually for some crazy reason I would buy a Ford. But all Chevy's cars & trucks since the late 90's to early 2000's have all been just crap. It started right before they became government motors. Always quality & design issues with them. They never admit they got it wrong too. They try to hide their mistakes like the ignition switches when they got the manufacturer to make a new improved switch but use the same part number as the old defective one so they wouldn't be blamed for the deaths of all those people. That's just dirty! All of the Government Motor products suck. Also personally I do not think any new car or truck are worth the money. They are waaaayyyy over priced.

One thing I noticed, the GMC was tested mainly during daylight hours. Looks like the Ford was tested mainly after dark. I wonder if the difference in air temps has anything to do with engine efficiency? Either MPG’s or def.
The Ike Gauntlet test already showed the Ford is quite a bit more efficient. Yes, the MPG number was identical in that test but remember it got the same work done quite a bit faster. That is the definition of efficiency.
I'm trying to figure out if the machine should be a hair more FORWARD on the trailer to add a tad more weight to the hitch? If that would smooth out the ride a bit. Looking at the trailer, it already looks like the excavator IS forward, in relation to the axles I mean. But as another here pointed out, the bulk of the weight in an excavator is on the rear of the machine, where the counterweight and engine reside. So that's why I'm wondering if the machine should be maybe a half foot to a foot more FORWARD on the trailer. If you have your weight BEHIND the axles, that's when you will get your shake, rattle and rolling going. I load a trailer with the bulk of the weight over the axles BUT if anything, just a hair forward of the axles rather than behind the axles. The more weight you take OFF the hitch, by way of moving the weight BACK on the trailer, the less control you have of the vehicle. (The physics of it … If you move the bulk of the weight to BEHIND the axles, the axles become a pivot point, so the speak, thereby making the rear of the truck itself too light which equates to less control of the vehicle). Obviously you can't put ALL the weight up on the hitch nor are you supposed to because there is a limit there too, but there is a 'sweet spot' in there.
Ford's performance is impressive, but is their a difference in reliability? As an anecdotal observation 80% of all the Diesel Tow trucks where I live are GMC/Chevrolet's. It's like how almost all the Taxi's here are Toyota Camry's. Just wondering if there is any reason for the Heavy GM representation. I am considering a 2500 HD and Ford's current offerings appear superior, performance wise, in both the Diesel and Gas versions. But this casual observation of Tow trucks in the area has me thinking.
I have hauled with ford, Chevy and Dodge. I will always prefer a Ford or Chevy. However from experience Ford is always good for that boost of power to accelerate when needed at full payload. Excellent video.
Do you guys take into account temperature changes when doing your mpg runs? I make the same drive from Wiggins to Denver everyday and get significantly better mileage when it’s above freezing out.
That's because AFR plays a factor in mpg. The cooler the air temp the more dense it is. Due to AFR, the more dense the air the more fuel that must be burned. Therefore, mpg will always be greater in warmer temps.
Wouldn't the fuel mileage and DEF usage vary by when the trucks go into regeneration mode? There is no way to tell when the trucks go into that mode. If you were say going uphill in one or the other truck during regeneration, does the fuel mileage suffer some occurring at a different times under different loads? GOOD VIDEO
As the ambient air temperature drops, air becomes denser, which increases aerodynamic drag. For every 10 degree Fahrenheit drop in temperature, aerodynamic drag increases by 2%. Every 2% increase in aerodynamic drag results in approximately 1% decrease in fuel economy. freightliner.com/blog-and-newsletters/how-adverse-weather-affects-fuel-economy/

The GMC was run in the daytime with the sun shining while the Ford was run at night when the ambient air temperature was cooler. Could this have an impact the mpg of each truck?
Love your shows. Some fun facts. In Sweden we are not allowed to drive faster then 80km/h aprox 50mph with trailer attached. On most of our motorways we have 110km/h aprox 66mph speedlimit without trailer. So 70mph with that trailer and load behind sounds alot.
Yeah, a lot of places throughout the US you can drive 75 to 85 Mph with a heavy trailer like that. Semi trucks also can go this fast unless otherwise posted.
With the high number of dipshits driving these trucks with the monster trailers behind them without a proper license and training, the US needs those rules as well. It’s insane the US continues to allow this. Almost as bad as people pulling 30ft bumper pull trailers with a 1/2 ton truck.

Would y’all ever take a pair of trucks with a Cummins 12 valve w the either the Allison & Ford transmission and see what the numbers are for fuel . Also the older trucks that don’t require def ??
The trucks are riding rough because the Cat is not loaded center of trailer. You have to measure the center of the trailer tandems to your hitch in the bed of your truck to find where to center the load. All the weight was directly on the trailer axles instead of being spread among all the axles.

I appreciate your tests. A question... were the tire pressures the same in both trucks? I couldn't help but notice the Ford was tested at a cooler temperature which would give it an advantage in horsepower and mileage. Cruise control does not give the best MPG, by the way, a throttle stop does.
Chad Perry I heard the same thing. It's why I always bought the mopar Def for my Cummins (15 a gallon) and ppl gave me shit for it. However, I never had a problem with my DEF system.
I just read all the comments and just can't resist getting in on this! After over a million miles running light duty GM, Ford and Dodge Pickups, I've come to the conclusion that are all toys. And yes, they are all LIGHT duty up to and including the 550, 5500. I don't even have a brand preference, they are all junk. I ran four F550's from 1999 to 2008. I got better mileage out of tires than I did injectors! The 6.0 was horrible, ever time you pulled a trailer of any formidable weight, all the coolant would blow out of the engine and I always had to buy 4WD to have enough gear reduction in low range to pull heavy loads up steep grades. The 6.4 delivered 5.7 MPG hauling just a 12,000lb load from Pennsylvania to Arkansas! The turbos fell apart and the fuel system was junk. The transfer cases on a 550 weren't any more robust than a 150! Just different gear ratios and the same cheesy case. I twisted the gears out of three of them. Broke two ZF transmissions as well. The best thing about the Ford F550 was the Dana 135 rear differential, bulletproof! I ran three Dodge Rams and stopped at 2006 model year because the new 6.7 is as big a POS as the Ford 6.7. Dodge trucks are built like a Revell model from the 70's when they switched to the snap together ones instead of glue together! You don't even need tools to take most of the truck apart, just yank on it! The G56 MB transmissions weren't bad although the dual mass flywheels were absolute garbage and the suspension was junk as well. Got better life out of tires than ball joints, track bars, etc. I don't even want to start with GM other than that the electronics are so bad your lucky to get it started or have anything electric or electronic even work in your truck after 50K miles. The Duramax would be a great engine if GM would have kept their hands out of it! Unfortunately, today the light, medium and heavy duty trucks are unreliable, get mediocre fuel mileage compared to what they could be capable of and cost a FORTUNE to repair. And BTW, the garbage emission systems WILL fail because they DON'T work! That's my $.02 I guess I'm just a disgruntled truck owner! One more thing, if your tires don't say 14.5, 17.5, 19.5, 22.5 or 24.5 on the side they are absolute garbage and never meant to haul anything!
I'd like to see a divider between the fuel and DEF fillers. All it would take is to be a little careless or a gust of wind to get a few drops of DEF in the fuel side. Also I'm not sure if the DEF systems are working constantly or is it intermittently with computer control?

Yep, we get better mileage from out 01 than our 14 duramax and we don't have to deal with DEF and post bailout GM problems quarterly. The only downside is the 6 speed is nice for highway and the exhaust brakes on the new trucks are a game changer.
The Ford is clearly the better truck in these tests. A 1mog difference is massive with 30k pounds!
TFL you guys are the best truck review channel PERIOD. 👏👏
A 15% difference in fuel economy is quite surprising, but I think the test loop was too short to be conclusive. Did either truck go into regeneration during the loop?
they don't even know what regeneration is. Mr. Truck probably knows but thats it
Regeneration is an absolute joke, nothing but a pain in the rear and then it screws the truck up cause the system decides not to regenerate its self.
This is the question I had. Big difference in fuel economy when in regen.
Not really Ford says the new 6.7 gets best economy out of the three GM ,Ram and from people I talk with seems to be true.

Thanks TFL!
Most videos will show the diesel uses less fuel but they never compare the actual cost of gas being cheaper.
All you need is the mpg comparison. The rest is simple math you can do yourself.

Jamie Webb most HD trucks w/ big V8’s require premium fuel. Meaning the gas is not cheaper
@@josephcreed7 aww did ford hurt you're feelings

Yeah it was too far up that's explains mose of the truck roughness as far as bouncing.
They would have scaled the truck and trailer. They would know the axle weight/tongue weight of the trailer. It's not overloaded or too far forward.
The harsh ride is just due to the nature of the trailer. Even with the torque tubes, flatbed trailers tend to ride harsh due to the deck being stiff, but when it does flex it travels through
Usually you load them backwards.... I run lowboy and that's what we do.
The pivot point on that trailer is between the 2 axles the weight is all in front of that.
usually that bounce you're getting is because of to much weight on the front axle of the trailer that is transfering the load to the hitch. Would be nice to have seen you guys adjust load as I think it was off and causing that bounce....speaking from past experience.
Agree.

Isn't the excavator a bit forward? Maybe that's why the ride was bumpy on both trucks.
Good question - would like to seem them address that, that ride in those trucks was terrible :(
I'm trying to figure out if the machine should be a hair more FORWARD on the trailer to add a tad more weight to the hitch?
That was my first impression. I’d load the excavator more or less on top of the axles on trailer. Just my opinion

Does the colder weather for the Ford improve the gas mpg?
Yea colder air denser air. Better combustion!
Therefore, mpg will always be greater in warmer temps.
air drag is much greater when cold. even planes have trouble flying in super hot weather, its called density altitude factor
You guys should get a simple obd 2 live data reader for some extra info, like what gear the truck is in, etc.
“I’m a bit of an under dog in this race” because I have a GMC
Wouldn't the fuel mileage and DEF usage vary by when the trucks go into regeneration mode? There is no way to tell when the trucks go into that mode. If you were say going uphill in one or the other truck during regeneration, does the fuel mileage suffer some occurring at a different times under different loads? GOOD VIDEO
TFL the only place where it aint a beauty contest we get numbers
Could air temps have made that difference in MPG? Colder at night with the Ford?
The Fords will overheat in Summer.
No, you can blame it on a better design by Ford.

11:43 Well thought out in having TWO cameras, just in case it's hard to see. Awesome
