Story Summary :-
OP (23, M) is living with his parents to save money after graduating college, but he isn’t saving much money due to the high rent Dad (53, M) and Mom (53, F) are charging him to live there. One day his parents ask him to move out so his irresponsible and spoiled older sister Eliza (27, F) and her boyfriend Grover (39, M) can move in after falling on hard times. OP is not happy about this, but he reluctantly obliges. OP moves out, and three weeks later his parents call him and ask why he hasn’t been paying rent. OP laughs at the absurdity of their request, and he tells them to make his sister Eliza start paying rent and hangs up the phone. He comes to Reddit asking for advice. In update one, OP’s parents tell him it is unfair to not pay rent when “OP knows Eliza and Grover can’t pay it yet.” OP agrees to help Eliza and Grover get jobs. In update two, OP gets Eliza and Grover a job at his workplace, and things immediately go wrong, and OP is humiliated. In
update three, OP goes to a family dinner. Eliza, Grover, and OP’s parents are
openly badmouthing OP in front of everyone to portray him as greedy and
heartless. OP snaps at them and storms out of the family function. In update four, Eliza and Grover make a scene at OP’s workplace. The two of them have already been on thin ice, OP fires Eliza and Grover. Eliza trashes the restaurant and Grover assaults OP. The police arrive and arrest Eliza and Grover. In update five, OP presses charges on Eliza and Grover and they face jail time. OP’s parents ask him to move back in so he can pay rent to cover the legal fees they spent on Eliza and Grover, and he tells his parents he’s cutting contact with them for good.

My parents did this to me. When I lived with them they charged me 100 a week to live there. When I moved out my rent was 600 a month and my parents still wanted me to pay them 100 a week cause they wouldn't have money threw out the month with out it. I finally had to tell them no.

The fact the boss didn't fire them the first day makes me believe he was giving the op a chance to fire them in order to benefit the op since I'm sure the boss was fully aware he was a door mat. That, well he's maybe not a good boss for the company, but he's a good boss that did this to help op become a better manager and person and probably credited the customers for the problems. I still can't believe the op bought the excuse country boy accidentally put a cooking in the soup.

This was crazy. First of all, OP was right not to pay rent. If you buy, say, an airline ticket from Boston to Portland, you expect to get a plane trip from Boston to Portland. And if you don't get the trip from Boston to Portland, you expect to be compensated for it. Same at a grocery store. If you pay for milk, you expect to leave with milk. OP's parents were essentially wanting him to pay for rent without giving him the service of a roof over their heads.
As for OP offering Eliza and Grover jobs... I honestly don't think he was wrong. As far as he knew, they only got fired from Home Depot for drinking. That's it. Not really smart, but not something you'd expect to be unfixable, especially since Eliza and Grover needed money.
When Eliza and Grover worked.... Oh my, how do you mess up at work THAT BADLY!? It'd be comical if it wasn't hurting Panera Bread's profits and endangering customers. And insulting your boss!? Grover is not blood, so he's not family. If you do consider him family, OP should be able to choose not to be family.

It's funny how you are treated like crap by your family for most of your life and strangers like say, "By the end of the day, they're still family."

What makes them family, just that you share the same DNA with them? People need to remember that there is a fundamental difference between genetics and family.
Actually you can choose your family. I had to go total NC with the bio family because they were so abusive I had PTSD and 2 other trauma induced illnesses. I now have 'chosen' family. These are people I have who have chosen to be family with me. I consider them my real family and they consider me real family.
You can absolutely choose your family.
The same with how people minimize your mistreatment. “It’s just makeup” Ok why cant she wear it then? “It’s just a necklace” Yeah, and inheritance from his late grandmother. You can go into depth about how you were mistreated and people will get mad that you told them the disturbing extent of your story (after them minimizing it mind you) and STILL make excuses

I don't agree OP did right until the very end. After about seven minutes into this story OP was making mistake after mistake. Once they were made to leave that should have been it. The complaint of no rent being received should have received a simple "I pay my rent to a new landlord now" and a "not going to happen" for demand they pay on sister's behalf. After that, just disingage on the subject - hang up or leave whenever it is brought up. Don't listen to their arguments, or suggest alternatives. Don't second guess yourself. You can't reason with batsht crazy, so don't even try. The story would have been a lot more boring, but at less cost to the OP.

OP, the only way your sister would know this is about her is if everything you say is true. You never should have hired those fools. Everyone knows you don't hire foolish family members. Plus, why didn't you fire them. Glad you stood up at dinner to tell them off. It's great you filed charges against those fools. Your sister didn't get enough time. No contact with them is the best. If you need a family go get two dogs.
OP DID fire them on Day 2. I'm not gonna argue about him not firing them sooner, though 2 days is still considered a VERY short career, and both Grover and Eliza never got past Day 2. Some may have had a shorter patience, but still, short temper, not in a bad way.
As for OP hiring them, Grover and Eliza were only recorded drinking at Home Depot. No other problems were recorded. I'll admit, it's still a silly way to get yourself fired, but it's still just ONE problem and nowhere NEAR the disaster at Panera. Even after the duo were fired from Home Depot, OP had no way of knowing exactly how insanely irresponsible those two were, and on Day 2, fired them accordingly.
NTA. Op was kicked out for golden sister. He said no to paying rent to a place he didn't live. He gave his sister a chance at job to earn money. She and her boyfriend failed miserably. They get jailed. Mom and Dad ask Op for rent? Heck no! Op is awesome for trying to help his pos sister.

Being asian, we are accustomed of giving weekly/monthly contribution in the form of allowance to our parents. But that is strictly according to amount that we could afford as a sign of love token to people who raised us. Paying an amount equivalent to rent is very demanding even to most asian people.
Yeah, those parents are examples of why at least some self reflection on your own actions is necessary. Even if one isn't religious or going to therapy.

I find this a little hard to believe... Firstly, if my crappy parents kicked me out and called me three weeks later about rent, I would have immediately hung up and gone no contact! I’m on team stupid OP for pressing charges and (finally) standing up for himself (and being an idiot). I would’ve cut these AHs a long ass time ago if I was OP with being kicked out and still expected to pay rent as the latest I would do it. I am glad he pressed charges. He was assaulted and was the victim. This was the straw that broke the camel’s back and he went all out after that. This is how nice people who are being taken advantage of react. He tried everything that was practical to help his sis and her bf get back on their feet. Parents are enablers.
That “no-contact” decision was way late. Had op just initiated the “no-contact” after being told he had to pay rent for a place he wasn’t living in he would have never been attacked. Making the decision after the demand he pay rent for his sister was the ideal time.
It even helped them move in after illegally evicting with no notice!!! Hahahahaha they sure did have them a great little tool to use and abuse!!!!

Legally, a 2 month notice is required, for landlord to use for their own purposes. The final month of rent is free.
You don't get to play the family card against a person that you didn't treat like a member of the family in the first place. Note to this OP and others in the same situation, if things don't change by the time you reach adulthood, get out and don't look back, don't fall for that family card nonsense from people who didn't treat you like family and don't expect them to change, most of the time they never do. Too many people in this kind of situation keep disappointing themselves by hoping that their parents will change and they never do.Also never allow them to guilt trip you no matter what.

Being family does not give you a license to use and abuse, I loved my brother but he was an abusive manipulative user. I for safety and to build a life of my own was forced to cut him out of my life. Sad though it is, I never saw him again and he is dead now, however he left me no choice. Trouble fallowed him every where he went and he recognized no boundaries between him and what ever he wanted.

This story is so insanely crazy, and doesn't make any sense. He pays a huge amount but gets a cheap apartment. Has a either a 2 yr or 4 yr degree in philosophy. So he is " super successful" and his parents are crazy. Even though he was the baby of the family. This is just bad ragebait at best

Assuming that happened at all: WTF would you offer two people with that many red flags jobs in your own workplace. The eventual outcome was fairly predictable at that point. Glad he pressed charges, though since it's all in the family he'll have to deal with retribution when they get out.
