      Hey there! I just wondered what has become your choice for street photography. Either the 16mm f2 or the 23mm f2? Last late autumn I purchased the 16mm f2 and have been very satisfied with this little lens' performance. I wonder if I should get the 23mm as well. Sometimes if you haven't got enough space and shoot to close to the subject, the distortion is all too visible with the 16mm. What's your opinion?

    • @ChrisBoland
      @ChrisBoland  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey. What is my latest choice for street photos? 16 or 23? Actually it's the 18mm 🙂 I was never too keen on 16 for street, although I love trying different lenses out. But over the past few months I've really loved 18 f2. I posted a review within the last month or so. I always enjoyed 23, so I'll probably try that again soon, but not the 16 for general street. I hope that answers your question. Also, yes I have noticed distortion on the 16 f2.8. Have you tried the 18?

      @@ChrisBoland The 18mm has not been on my radar so far. I never had the opportunity to try this lens as well. I surely will watch your video about this lens, the focal length sounds interesting to me. Thanks for your reply 👍🏻

      I've found it to be a really nice halfway house between the two focal lengths you mentioned. Plus it's very slim on the camera.

    • @ChrisBoland
      @ChrisBoland  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are both great, but for me the most important thing that has improved over the past few years and the past few versions of the cameras is the autofocus. For weddings, personally I would want the best autofocus possible - the XT3 is excellent and possibly improving soon through firmware. For social or street or anything else I'm very happy to slow things down and not worry if the focus is slow or misses occasionally, but weddings are different. The XT2 is a big leap up from the XT1 I believe.

    Nice - I enjoyed it - a new fuji user coming from Nikon. Super happy with Nikon but wanted a small set up so bought the XT30 with Godox tt350 and 35mm F1.4. I also rate the 15-45 kit lens. It's small, light, focuses fast and gives me a very useful range especially when paired with a flash. I like have 1.4 but a lot of the time, I find myself at F4 / 5.6 for the same reason as you, try to keep something of the background

    Your reviews are excellent !!!. Your voice is great and you provide proper images of your work as examples which other reviewers dont do! I have subscribed to your channel!! I have all the fuji F2 primes plus the fuji pro zoom xf16-55 mouted permanently on one xt2 and i my other xt2 for my prime lenses, i use my prime lenses when im travelling light but when im shooting at family weddings or events the fuji zoom is invaluable as it zooms without me using my feet!! Plus it has similar image quality of the fuji primes and the only negative point is the weight. Ive never used the older 1.4 primes before but after watching your excellent video i would like to buy a 1.4 prime lens and see the majic they render myself.

      Hi Matthew, thanks very much indeed. Absolutely, I'm always trying to think of new ideas for my channel, so I appreciate the suggestions. I certainly do go out with as few lenses as possible. If it's just for personal pictures I try to just use one - not always, but often. Also, yes, as I hinted at in this video - I'm using the 56 much less. So 23 and 35 sounds like a good mix. I'd like to maybe try 16 and 35 so the lenses are more different though.

    do you prefer this focal length over the 23mm for street/portrait photography?

    • @ChrisBoland
      @ChrisBoland  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the comment. I have mixed feelings really. For street photography I definitely prefer the 23mm - and I'm even starting to enjoy 16/18mm outside. Today I'm heading out with a 17mm full frame film camera :-) But that's a bit weird and I don't do that every day. For portraits I like both 23 and 35. I like how the 23 gives you a more environmental look - you usually see more of the background. But 35mm, all things being equal isolates the subject more - more shallow depth of field, a less broad background. So - mixed feelings, but always wider for street at the moment. Thanks again 👍

    • @sezoism
      @sezoism 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have both the 35mm 1.4 and 23mm f2 and I took both out for street and noticed in some rare scenarios the 35mm wasn't wide enough (mostly for architecture) and the 23mm f2 would've helped in those scenarios but the 35mm 1.4 is a huge advantage in street photography when you don't want to get super close to the subject. I noticed using the 23mm I would have super wide photos because I didn't want to get too close to the subject and it wasn't the exact shot I wanted so i had to crop a bit. However with the 35mm it lets you keep a good distance from the subject without getting too close. I found it to be a bit better in those aspects. If you're comfortable enough to get super close to your subject on the street then the 23mm is great, if you want to keep a good distance go 35mm

  • @BenVallack

    Lovely shots and great format with your videos. I have the 35 f2 at the moment and hate the focus breathing when shooting video. Is the 1.4 better in terms of breathing? Although I hear the 1.4 is noisy so I might be trading breathing for noise. At least with the f2 I can get away with it if I’m tracking a subject that doesn’t change distance too much. Would love your opinion on breathing and motor noise. Would a rode video micro mounted on top of the camera pick it up?

    • @ChrisBoland
      @ChrisBoland  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ben, thanks very much for the comment. I apologise, I don't know too much about this. I have only used the f2 for video a couple of times and I'm not looking for breathing, but it may well be there. I'm possibly not changing focus often in clips. The 1.4 is louder, but not crazy. I don't use on camera mix, so I'm mostly oblivious to it. Sorry I can't be more help.

(The xpro1 with noice at 3200iso is getting hard to actually take night photos).

      Hi. I have very rarely used IBIS for stills, but appreciate it can be useful in some situations. I once took a long-ish exposure (maybe 1/4 second) of a couple by a passing underground train with the XH1 and that looked quite cool. Usually for stills I would get by absolutely fine with no IBIS - perhaps just using a neck strap pulled tight for some steadiness will do the trick. I
      I had the XH1 for quite a while and never took it out for stills. I used it for video and of course bought it because of the IBIS :-) For me the XH1 is way too chunky for an everyday carry-everywhere camera. So, in a long way I'm saying personally I'd never buy the XH1 for stills. I've never used the XPro3, but I owned the XPro2 for a while and loved it. Personally I think the 'special' back LCD of the Pro3 would drive me crazy. I have a feeling the Pro2 would feel like a big leap from the Pro1.
      I adore the XT3 and is one of my favourite stills cameras. Likewise - the XT2 might well feel like a very big leap from the Pro1. So my instinct is that maybe XH1 and Pro3 might not be the necessary. Hope that helps and hasn't confused you even more :-)

      @@ChrisBoland Thank you so much for your help, presently the xh1 is £619 new online in the UK. The xpro2 is about £900 still unfortunately, have been waiting for a long while to upgrade due to budget constraints, I sometimes miss shots focus with the xpro1 due it it being contrast focus only, and haven't been going out shooting as much as I should for that reason. I think you have made me realise that of I wait for cameras to come down in cost any longer it would be another 2 years waiting.
      I would like to video in the future also, I have a canon 60d with grip I use for this so I am used to the couple of metric tonnes on my shoulders.
      Thank you for all your help, and your many great videos over the years. I will let you know what I purchase.

      You're welcome. It might be worth checking out second hand - the Pro2 seems a little over £600 there. But if you're comfortable with the bigger camera, the XH1 is superb - for stills and video.

    Hi guys do you think this 35mm f1.4 is better with XT20? How was the performance? Your ideas are really appreciated. Thanks

    • @ChrisBoland
      @ChrisBoland  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. I'm sorry but I have never used the XT20. I'm not sure how it compares to the XT3 and XE3. It might be similar to XE3 and it works great on that.

    Hi Chris, so the fuji 35 1.4 has a better performance in terms of autofocus now with the XT3? Do you see any disadvantages on this lens currently?

    • @ChrisBoland
      @ChrisBoland  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, definitely - on the XT3 it is improved significantly, to the point where I am absolutely happy with it. I think the f2 lenses are likely to be quicker, they are of course smaller, but overall the 35 1.4 is magic 👍

      @ChrisBoland  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good question and the truth is I didn't - but I'm not 100% sure I would notice. Any differences certainly weren't dramatic. The biggest difference is the AF improvement with the more modern camera.

    Hi there. What would you choose between xf 35mm f1.4 / xf 35 f2 / Mitakon 35mm ?
    Also 16mm f1.4 / 18mm f2 / 23mm f2 ? Thanks :)

      Hi. For 35 the 1.4 it's hard to beat, I love it. I sold the other two, even though they are still very nice too. For wider I currently love the 18 f2, but the 16 1.4 is magic. For general street the 23 f2 is simple, but wonderful - although I'm using the 18 f2 more instead these days. 👍👍

      @@ChrisBoland Hello and thanks for your excellent video and great channel Chris! 👍
      I'm wondering if I should buy the 35mm F1.4 or the F2 for beautiful stills and some facecam videos with my X-T30. 😉
      For stills: Is the F1.4 version better in low light situations? Does it focus faster than the F2.0, or is it exactly the other way round? Is the focus precise and accurate with the F1.4 in low light? 🎯
      For videos:
      1. Is the 35mm F2 prone to hunting while shooting videos in march 2021? In which conditions?
      2. Did you find a way to solve it? It's important for me as I shoot some facecams with AF-C or eye-tracking ;)
      > In particular: did you try to play with autofocus sensitivity and speed, as they play a major role in autofocus breathing?
      > Maybe the last february 2021 firmware updates correct this? It helped many of my lenses autofocus...
      What do you think? Any advice or thought is welcome! 🙂
      Thanks a lot Chris!

      @@cm4340 Thanks for the questions CM, but I'm afraid I really don't pay close enough attention to all of that :-) I love both the f2 and the 1.4, but right now I only own the 1.4. The 1.4 lets in a stop more light and gives a nicer, more blurred background. But the f2 focuses quicker, is more compact and is more weather resistant. Despite that I prefer the more shallow depth of field of the 1.4. Sorry I can't help more.

      That's perfect @@ChrisBoland, thanks a lot for your answer.
      With your experience of shooting stills with both of them, in low light situations, which autofocus is the more accurate: F1.4 or F2.0?
      I don't know if its wider aperture gives the edge to the F1.4 version, or if the F2.0 is more accurate in low light...
      I don't care about spedd: I don't mind waiting 1-2 seconds for the lens to focus, but I want it to be accurate ;)

      Thank you Sandeep. The 35 1.4 isn't as fast as the f2 lenses, but is fast enough. I used to struggle with the 35 1.4, but on the XT3 I'm very happy with it. The AF is slower on the XH1 and I'm happy with that too.

      Hi Andres. I was looking through someone's pictures recently and they only used 35mm f2 and the pictures are wonderful. But the f1.4 just has something special I think. If a smaller setup is a priority, then f2 is absolutely great. Thanks for your kind words - thanks for watching! 👍
