A lens review by someone who actually knows how to take photos! How novel! 🙃 Great pics mate!! Keep up the great work!! I really enjoyed your photos! 👍🏽👍🏽
I might have left this comment on another one of your videos, but please - make an audiobook or a podcast, preferrably related to Fuji ;-). I struggle with falling to sleep and your voice is so soothing I'd fall asleep in a matter of minutes. Anyway, thanks for your videos. Love them :-)
Hi Thomas, thanks for the comment - I would really love to do that someday. I love listening to audiobooks. I think it would be about photography in general. Thanks again!
As good as your post processing skills is, equally amazing is your composition . Would you mind telling me how do you add those perfect flimic fade in your pictures?
Thanks very much Mohammed, that's really kind. I use a few different things for editing. I sometimes use some old Ektar and Portra simulations meant for Nikon camera, but I just like the look. More recently I've been using Classic Chrome with the saturation up a bit. Thanks again.
Truly you had a god lens on your camera body. The photos captured that blink blessed moment. I have learned a lot studying your photos. Your signature series supporting this mm lens is greatly appreciated.
The one thumb down was likely a mistake...great review mate. I tried this lens but decided to stick with my trustworthy 1.4 version, regardless, f2 is a great little performer.
Thanks for sharing Chris and at last a vlogger that shows more images with less talk. Subscriber now and just ordered this lens for my XT-3 and looking forward to starting to close with my subjects and improve my own photography.
Thanks so much Nigel, I really appreciate it. I went away for a few days and took my XT3 and the 23, it's a great combination. Thanks for subscribing! 🙂👍
Lovely review as usual Chris. I've kept my copy of this lens - just so I can have something small and light to walk around with on my old X-T1. I shoot my two X-H1's with a 90mm F2 on one of them and the marvellous 16-55 on the other. What disappoints me with this little kit lens though (especially up close), my 16-55 zoom is much sharper and has some magic sauce where some of the images take my breath away - the 23mm f2 - not so.
Thank you Philip. The 16-55 is a lens I've only heard great things about, but I've not tried it just yet. It's a bit bigger that the 23, but if it has that magic, then of course it will be worth it :-)
Hey Chris, I just ordered my first Fuji (x-t30 + 23mm f2) and thought I'd search for some 23mm videos on TH-cam to hype myself up before it arrives. Stumbled onto your channel and ended up watching half your library already. Great videos, straight to the point (visual people like visuals), calming narration, amazing photos!
Wow, another lovely, delightful, ever so stylish video. And beautiful pics. Chris, if you ever give up photography (don't!!!), you'd be a great voice-over talent. Btw, do you script your narration or just speak off the cuff. Amazing
Thank you. This is one of my favourite collections of pictures I think. I always write the narration out first - that takes me longer than the photos :-)
That's difficult for me to answer as I have not tried the X100V or XPro3. However I love the X100F, so I can highly recommend that line of cameras. However, of course it can be great to be able to switch lenses - even if you mainly use just the one. I used the XPro2 lots and loved it - but it's much much bigger and heavier than the X100. Also, the XPro3's screen would completely drive me crazy. The closer match to the X100V might even be the tiny, but awesome XE3. Or the XT20, XT30. Sorry, I might not be helping. I'd say if you're pretty sure you'll be happy with a 23mm lens, then go for the X100V. The fact that it's smaller and lighter means you're more likely to take it out and get more pictures.
Beautiful Pictures. I have a huge soft spot for B&W's, but like them all. I have the 16 2.8 and the 35 & 50mm f2 and am thinking about adding this lens to use with my X-Pro2..
Hello Chris from America. I have the 35mm f.2 I use on my Fuji X-T1, which is a great lens. I am considering getting the 23mm f.2. Just found your "Little Review" and appreciate the brevity and all the great pictures. Some reviews on this lens are lengthy and technical but lack in sample pictures. Great job on your review and thanks, you convinced me! Only one little negative comment: the music is a little monotonous and doesn't do your pictures justice. Kind regards!
I have a couple of the Fujifilm F2 primes including the 23mm. It's my favorite lens for its versatility. I am always interested to see how others use this lens so I can get ideas for my own photography. I appreciate that the video is short, and the photos are of what you want to shoot and not for a lens review.
@@ChrisBoland actually I'm here because I'm considering between 23mm f2 and 35mm f2 for my first prime. I think 23mm would be more suitable at this time since some of the reviews of 35mm said that it is too tight for them. Just wondering if 23mm f2 would be good for portrait. Ppl say it's a all rounder lens
Another great video Chris! I especially love this one not only for your amazing images but also because the 23mm lens is probably my favorite. It pretty much stays on my XH1 camera all the time. It’s really an amazing lens and so small. I also have that 50mm lens you mentioned and those two always come with me on trips. I have the 23mmF2 Excellent video! Thanks for the inspiration!
Another great review.. Chris 👍 I currently own xf23f2, it's indeed good lens, compact and sturdy, however the useability of this lens remains very limited to street. In order to have better utilisation of 23mm lens for almost everything, including street, landscapes and potraits would you recommend replacing f2 with f1.4..? I don't prefer carrying both.
Thank you very much Atul. I do have both lenses :-) As you say - the f2 is perfect for street. I actually used it at a wedding last week and it was good. I think the 1.4 is much nicer for portraits. It's a hard decision. They do have different uses. The 1.4 does it all, but is just bigger.
I’d be interested to know you don’t shoot mirrorless for the whole wedding. I have the xt2 with the 50mm f2 with hopes of doing a few weddings this year. Thanks! Great work!!
Thanks Kristie, I'll have a think about that. I've just been playing with the XT3 in a shop and am a bit in love with that, so maybe I'll try it in the summertime. I guess I just love the big optical viewfinder of my Nikon and that it focuses really reliably, even in quite low light settings. Those reasons plus me just being so familiar with Nikons at weddings might be why I haven't made the jump - just yet 🙂
I love this review so much...I’ve watched it so many times already !! Picture n°6 is my absolute favorite 😍😍😍. I am about to get a new camera and I think I’ll go for the X-T3 combined with this lens.
Nice channel, Chris. 23 f2 has some issues with focusing at close distance, also, at f2 closeups are not sharp at all. Overall it's a nice lens and perfect focal length for street.
Agree 100%. I’ve owned the 23f2 now for 4 months and admittedly still learning its best attributes and applications. That said, at this point I prefer my tried-and true, occasionally maligned, 18mm f2, a fantastic lens, in my experience, one that likes to get up close, offers more context, and super sharp images.
The funny thing is, I find time after time that smaller apertures with this lens for close-ups seem to be good enough. There's enough bokeh in the shot for me. I don't own the lens but I think it's a very usable workaround.
@@ChrisBoland :-) P.S. it's interesting how we often lust for wide aperture lenses for shallow depth of field. When viewing your images here with the f2 I caught myself thinking that the images were beautiful as is, didn't feel shallower depth of field would have been an improvement on the mood in the images. At least for your documentary like style. A picture is better than a theoretical ideal picture, smaller lenses help in that regard to always have a camera with desirable results. Portraiture and depth of field is a different kettle of fish for some/many. We're lucky to have the relatively small 35mm f1.4 for that!
Thank you - I agree completely about the depth of field., I've thought a lot about that. I think the widest the aperture can go influences us too much sometimes. I love street photography where you can see all parts of the frame in focus. But you're right - the 35 1.4 works wonders for portraits! :-) That';s when you want to cut out the distractions of the background more I guess.
@@ChrisBoland Agreed! Personally the only gap in Fuji lenses for me is wide primes. I currently have the Samyang 12mm f2 which is beautiful, but manual focus, which I'm no good at :-p, I look forward to an auto focus update/alternative. Your 14mm Fuji lens photos are beautiful, I love wide context. In the evening an extra stop in aperture could be appreciated to lower noise levels. The hinted Viltrox 13mm f1.4 AF sounds amazing, but could be big and heavy, we'll see!
Thank you Robert. That's a good question I don't have a perfect answer for. I think if I'm honest it's a bit of a phase 🙂 Perhaps it's just for a change.
Amazing photos! And by far the best showcase video! Having two Fuji cameras a digital one (x100f) and a film one (ga645i) I don't think I'm switching to any other system any time soon. Fuji makes the best cameras IMO. I'm currently considering getting a second hand x-pro 2 with a couple of WR primes and maybe an X-T4 as a prime body for videos later on. What do you think about this lens compared to the one in x100f? From what I see, the picture seems quite better.
Thanks so much Anton, that's really kind. I have a Fuji 35mm camera and would love to try a medium format. I think you're right that the 23 WR might be better than the X100F. I love both, but do feel the WR has something extra. The 23 1.4 is lovely for portraits, but is quite a bit bigger. As you already have the X100F - getting the 1.4 might make sense. Thanks again for watching 👍
Loving the look of Fuji photos, (b&w & colour.) I used mostly Fuji film for print & slide film years ago, that's probably why... I now use Canon Full Frame, & compact Panasonic M43. But wish to have a Fuji and maybe replace my M43 system. I am looking at getting the XE3 and this lens to start with. As street is something I wish to try more. Can't wait to have the Fuji look again.. 50th birthday later this month, so think I ought to treat myself..
Thanks very much for watching and for your comment too. There really is something special about the Fuji look. It's natural, but with a certain style, it's hard to describe. I shoot film occasionally, but haven't used too many Fuji films, I must get around to that. Anyhow, I really recommend the XE3 and the 23mm f2, that's a fantastic combination.
Totally agree that the lens is great, BUT in no particular/magical way. It’s up to you to compose a great shot with it. Also, I really enjoy the way you edit your Fuji shots. Would you mind sharing a bit of your workflow? I’m curious!!
Thanks very much Daniel. I tend to mess around with the edits quite a bit until they just feel right to me - but I do often use an Ektar or Portra film simulation as a starting point for some of them.
I loved your video, and also i super appreciate it as im looking for a review of this lens. Im subscribing to your channel hope you keep this format kind of a video where its also nice to see your photography work.
Great pictures Chris!!!! Would You answer me a question? I was thinking to purchase the 23mm F1.4 and I would like You to tell me if is very slow to be use on the street. Is it worth to buy the F 1.4 or is better the F2? Thank You for your help!
@@ChrisBoland But the thing that I have to go to f5.6 to get some quality makes me think.... I will leave the 23mm for the next time and I will get the 35 mm f2 that I know for sure that will gives me good results even at f2.Than you so much Chris and I love videos with pictures like you do, is the best way to show people the quality of the lens.
thanks for the video filled with good informations, really beautiful pictures and nice music :-) watching the video and listen to you and the music after a harsh day at work let me calm down and feeling relaxed ;-) greetings from germany^^
@@ChrisBoland They're amazing, which film presets do you use in Lightroom? Or are there any in particular you would recommend for post-processing? I'm interested in playing around with a similar look. Thanks
@@soz1f The colour ones I use are Ektar and Portra. I don't really aim to match those film styles particularly, but they do provide a nice look that at least has a different feel from the straight out of camera look. Hope that helps a bit.
There Photos are phenomenal! Really! And thanks for your calm voice. subsribe instant. have they all been shot on the f2 ? and do you think the bokeh is nicely noticeable?
Thank you very much indeed. Yes, these were all shot on the 23mm f2 - on a few different cameras I think. The bokeh is certainly quite subtle, I don't find it amazing, nor distracting at all. For portraits and nicer bokeh the 1.4 is likely better, but it's a lot bigger and I really like the feel of the f2 on the camera.
@@ChrisBoland great! I am quite sure getting it.. nothing to regret for sure and for the bokeh bang I might try Viltrox 😆 I have seen a lot recently but your edit just sticks! You offer your presets?
It's a great lens, you won't be disappointed. I'm really glad you like the edits. I keep meaning to do a video on that, but never get around to it. I've modified some old Nikon presets for Portra I think - although I do play around with each picture individually. Recently I've been using Classic Chrome with the saturation and contrast up a little and I really like that - plus a little grain.
Thank you Juan. That is a bride getting her makeup done. She is reflected in the very corner of a mirror. Sometimes in the corner there are two bits of glass and here this had made two images of the bride.
Hi. Sure, that and the next photo were taken on the bridge at Clare College in Cambridge - www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.205005,0.11403,3a,75y,286.63h,89.66t/data=!3m8!1e1!3m6!1sAF1QipNWUBPDMOFvYzkd7ZKaIFu-YUgqQXP9gctYDrIz!2e10!3e11!6shttps:%2F%2Flh5.googleusercontent.com%2Fp%2FAF1QipNWUBPDMOFvYzkd7ZKaIFu-YUgqQXP9gctYDrIz%3Dw203-h100-k-no-pi-0-ya256.80206-ro0-fo100!7i9216!8i4196
Thanks for watching. It's not the absolute best for getting a shallow depth of field for portraits, but you can get that feel. If that's the look you'd like always shoot at f2 of course. After that two things will help - getting close to your subject and having the background far away. Hope that helps 👍
@@ChrisBoland My understanding is that Fuji manufactures these lenses for their crop sensor cameras but that they are rated for full frame cameras (even though they only manufacture crop sensor cameras themselves) and that a crop factor must be applied when being used on Fuji cameras. Do I understand this correctly? I'm a little surprised at this if it is so. I just recently purchased a Fuji.
I wish I was better at explaining it. It confused me for a while, but I understand it now - I think. Ideally the focal length really shouldn't be measured in mm. It's just a hangover from full frames being most common. However, "35mm equivalent" is the unit we use across all cameras. Fuji 23mm lens + the Fuji sensor captures a focal length the same as a full frame 35mm lens on a full frame camera. On the Fuji GFX a 45mm lens gives you approx 35mm equivalent. A wide iPhone lens is just 4.5mm, but gives a focal length of approx 26mm 'full frame equivalent'. The bottom line is that a Fuji 23mm lens is a 23mm lens. On a Fuji X camera it gives the equivalent focal range of 35mm on full frame - if you want to think in those terms, which many people do.
Hi Roni. I don't have the XT30 so can't really judge. I love the XE3 very much though. The XT30 has the flip screen and is more modern and better for video I think. Just for stills I would buy the cheaper XE3. It's a beautiful camera, I love the design.
Astonishing photos in your videos, not just for the editing, but you cl arly are gifted at being able to capture the scene. Why do you prefer the x100f over the Xe3?
Thank you very much. I have both cameras and they are both great. I like the X100F for smaller overall size. I have it around my neck right now 🙂 The XE3 is great when I need a different lens - and it is still very compact.
Which one inspires you more? I use an XE3 with an 18mm & 35mm. I'm intrigued by the X100f as it almost seems like it offers inspiration to shoot (23mm focal length apart)

Very enjoyable images beautiful and well done
Thank you 👍
Dude.... your work.... is really, really, really, really, really, good.
Thanks so much Braeden. Thanks for the encouragement 🤙👍
Love your pictures
Thank you Natalia.
I bought this lens yesterday thanks to your review :)
Thank you - I hope you enjoy it 🙂
Loved the photos, great work.
Thank you! 👍
Great review..it would be great if you put setting of the camera in every picture.. cheers
Thanks for the suggestion Imaan 👍
Beautiful work Chris.
Thank you very much Hubey 👍
@@ChrisBoland :-)
P.S. it's interesting how we often lust for wide aperture lenses for shallow depth of field.
Love the approach to your review. Glad to see a refreshing take.
Thank you Reggie 👍
Chris, very nice photos. However, why do you prefer this combination over the X100F?
Thank you Robert. That's a good question I don't have a perfect answer for. I think if I'm honest it's a bit of a phase 🙂 Perhaps it's just for a change.
great shots! this is definitely my favorite lens
Thanks Mikey 🙂
Loving the look of Fuji photos,
(b&w & colour.)
I used mostly Fuji film for print & slide film years ago, that's probably why...
Love the photos!
Thank you. Love your name! 😊
I loved your video, and also i super appreciate it as im looking for a review of this lens. Im subscribing to your channel hope you keep this format kind of a video where its also nice to see your photography work.
Thanks so much Ezequiel! I really enjoy making the videos, so I hope there will be lots more. Thanks for watching 👍
1:25 is such a great image.
Thank you Braeden 🙂
Amazing. Finally, a review worth the time. Cheers.
Much appreciated, thanks very much Craig.
Great images, transparent review...
Thanks very much Pablo.
Great pictures Chris!!!! Would You answer me a question? I was thinking to purchase the 23mm F1.4 and I would like You to tell me if is very slow to be use on the street. Is it worth to buy the F 1.4 or is better the F2? Thank You for your help!
Hi Andres. I think for street I'd go for the f2. Faster and smaller - it's really perfect for street.
@@ChrisBoland But the thing that I have to go to f5.6 to get some quality makes me think.... I will leave the 23mm for the next time and I will get the 35 mm f2 that I know for sure that will gives me good results even at f2.Than you so much Chris and I love videos with pictures like you do, is the best way to show people the quality of the lens.
do you think this f2 better choice than viltrox f1.4? they are close in term of price!
Hi. I'm afraid I've not tried the Viltrox, sorry about that.
this was so pleasing to watch! :)
Thank you 🙂🙂
Beautiful!! Great format
Thank you!
I liked your pictures and video
Thank you!
thanks for the video filled with good informations, really beautiful pictures and nice music :-)
watching the video and listen to you and the music after a harsh day at work let me calm down and feeling relaxed ;-)
greetings from germany^^
Thanks so much, I'm really glad you enjoyed it. They'll be more photos soon 👍
What a nice review!
Thank you very much, it's one of my favourites I think. Thanks for watching 👍
Great. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks very much Mark 👍
Are you able to show how you edit your photos please?
Sure, I really need to do a video on this. I basically have a few film simulations and then play around with them a while 🙂
@@ChrisBoland They're amazing, which film presets do you use in Lightroom? Or are there any in particular you would recommend for post-processing? I'm interested in playing around with a similar look.
Thanks
@@soz1f The colour ones I use are Ektar and Portra. I don't really aim to match those film styles particularly, but they do provide a nice look that at least has a different feel from the straight out of camera look. Hope that helps a bit.
which one do you prefer? 23mm or 35mm? curious to know!
Have you used 16mm too?
I prefer 35mm f2 to 23mm. The 16mm is amazing, such a special lens.
It's actually a great lens. I own a 23mm f2 with a XT-20 body.
Thanks for watching. That's a nice combination - it really suits a small camera body.
@@ChrisBoland Fantastic! Great to know will try that out :) see you around chris
niiiceeeeeee piics. What camera did you occupy in these photos?
Thank you. These were a real mix - XE3, XT2, XT3. Perhaps a few others :-)
Really like the image at 2:12, may I know how did you made that shot. Thanks, very nice photos.
Thank you Juan. That is a bride getting her makeup done. She is reflected in the very corner of a mirror. Sometimes in the corner there are two bits of glass and here this had made two images of the bride.
Thank you!
Please, can you tell me where the shot was taken at 0:10 ?
Hi. Sure, that and the next photo were taken on the bridge at Clare College in Cambridge - www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.205005,0.11403,3a,75y,286.63h,89.66t/data=!3m8!1e1!3m6!1sAF1QipNWUBPDMOFvYzkd7ZKaIFu-YUgqQXP9gctYDrIz!2e10!3e11!6shttps:%2F%2Flh5.googleusercontent.com%2Fp%2FAF1QipNWUBPDMOFvYzkd7ZKaIFu-YUgqQXP9gctYDrIz%3Dw203-h100-k-no-pi-0-ya256.80206-ro0-fo100!7i9216!8i4196
great pics!
learn a lot
Thank you Naforez!
Nice work 😊
Thanks L :-)
I have the same lens! but im struggling to get the bokeh effect for portraits? any tips or settings to adjust?
Thanks for watching. It's not the absolute best for getting a shallow depth of field for portraits, but you can get that feel. If that's the look you'd like always shoot at f2 of course. After that two things will help - getting close to your subject and having the background far away. Hope that helps 👍
Nice photos!
Thank you. 👍
I'm glad I found you, you're talented my friend. 3:08 :')
Thanks so much Shehan 🙂
Beautiful photos
Thank you Ronald.
AHHHHHH I LOVE THIS REVIEW SO MUCH💖
Thanks so much Leon! 😊😊
So, you have to apply the 1.5 crop factor making this a 34.5mm focal length lens, am I correct?
Hi. Yes, this lens on a Fuji X camera has roughly the same focal length as a 35mm lens on a 'full frame' camera.
@@ChrisBoland Yeah. Basically, that was what I was asking. Thanks for the detailed reply. Take care.
Hey Chris! I really like your film look. How do you achieve it?
Hey Jeremy. Thanks. I use an Ektar or Portra simulation to start things off and then just play with them lots until they feel right.
What do you prefer, XE 3 or XT 30 for every day camera?
Hi Roni. I don't have the XT30 so can't really judge. I love the XE3 very much though. The XT30 has the flip screen and is more modern and better for video I think. Just for stills I would buy the cheaper XE3. It's a beautiful camera, I love the design.
@@ChrisBoland thank you
yoooo ... you're good .
Thank you! 🙂

The X100 really does inspire. Such a quiet shutter, the ND filter, just great. But I love the other too.
What camera did you use to shoot those?
Hi. It would have been a mix - XE3, XT2, Pro2 mostly I think.
Nice pictures
Thanks very much Martin 👍
