I bought the 60mm f2.4 this summer as I needed something with a bit more range but not much more size. Another Fuji classic. And I was blown away by the look you can get with it. • @mainquestion
      @mainquestion 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

35 F1.4 and 60 F2.4 are two of the most interesting in terms of rendering and character. Unfortunately, Fujii's most artistic lenses have proven to be very undervalued these days.

@@mainquestion Agree! I would be very curious to get a GxAce treatment of the Voigtländer 23mm f1.2. It's gotten rather negative review so far, but it might be because people look at sharpness first and not so much at the character of the lens. Would love to get a different perspective for it. Was just going to say Voightlander seems to be trying this with Fuji. Putting in the CPU contacts makes it so much more valuable on an X-Pro body since it'll show proper frame lines. I can see why companies are hesitant though, that lens got dragged in a ton of reviews for being a "character" lens at that cost, even if that's what a lot of fuji shooters might want.

I left Fuji [now back to Nikon FX DSLRs] after ten years, acquiring 6 X bodies and 9 XF lenses early in that time yet I can not in all honesty part with the XF35mm f1.4R. It with my X-E1 was my first Fuji purchase and will keep along with the X-Pro2 where that lens really shines.
People years ago thought I was nuts when I alone said that this lens has a certain magic, now fast forward to recent time my words from back then are now validated.
I found the original XF18mm f2 pancake to have similar character at wider apertures, especially when shooting b&w. That was my second XF lens purchase in 2012 and still use from time to time.

Interesting video ... and the visual storytelling style here is simply SUPERB.
One question about this lens and the images it produces: was the light blooms seen in many images you shown here is the product of post-processing, or was it really the optical characteristic of this lens?
    Cause I like it.
It reminds me of my vintage lenses (40s, 50s, and 70s era lenses) which tend to have similar imperfections due to the limited coating and lens technology at that time

I have this lens and agree that it's superb. It's not difficult to make it weather resistant. Put the camera and lens into a plastic bag - preferably transparent such as a shower cap. Then place the lens hood over the bag - trapping the shower cap / bag. Then, (carefully) using a craft knife, remove the portion of the shower cap / bag from in front of the lens.

Wow. Wow. Wow. This video just completely stopped me in my tracks. I had to watch the whole thing. The smooth switch in the beginning from regular narrator to the alternate “character” was such a chilling introduction, and having then both exist simultaneously is so jarring in the best way possible. Every time the character switched I got chills.
I also absolutely love the aesthetic here. The color grading is top tier. The B-Roll is amazing. I discovered and fell in love with Fuji nearly a decade ago when I got bought the original X100. I really, really liked that camera. I later owned the original X-Pro1 which I absolutely loved. Still one of my top favorite cameras of all time. I ended up owning the X-T1, the X-E1, the X-E2, the X10, the X-H1, the X-T30, etc. I wasn't a big fan of the X-E2, but I didn't hate it. The X-H1 was the first real sign of trouble, though. I loved the ergonomics and features of the camera, but I was unhappy with the image quality. I have owned nearly every brand of camera and nearly every sensor size. Shot film and digital. DSLR and mirrorless. I have never had a camera that I felt I just "could not" get the results I wanted. Some cameras require more tweaking of raws than others. Some work better withe certain photo editing software. I could always end up being happy with my results, though, even if it took a lot of time. The X-H1 was the first camera I ever owned that eventually had me toss my hands up and walk away. I sold it and bought an X-T30. It wasn't as problematic as the X-H1, but it still took a lot of work to get the results I wanted and overall there was nothing about the quality of the images or the shooting experience that I fell in love with.
Fuji was awesome when they first started making their comeback. They went against the grain and did stuff that nobody else was doing, and I loved all of it. Over the years, though, though the styling of their cameras is still vintage (mostly), the shooting experience and the results you get just don't have that same special something that they used to.

I fully agree with you on the negative trajectory of their design philosophy. I actually got into Fujifilm for the compact lenses. This and the 18f2 were the first ones I bought.
Unfortunately now they seem to want to pour all their resources into coming 4th place in the full frame pro market, when most pros still turn their noses up at aps-c.
I wish they would go back to their roots, even if they get get bullied for being the "poor man's Leica". I miss compact, high quality cameras, with great ergonomics. I was sad to see that the X-E4 has less than 3 fn buttons, and no focus mode switch. A lot of us came over for the buttons and dial user experience.
Plus, overall portability is at its worst. The EOS R is even lighter and smaller than the X-T4. Sony have the A7C, and new small primes. The new Z30 looks miniscule. - And here I am, just waiting on old Fujifilm to stop trying to break up with me. 😂

I don't mind manual focus tbh, I just wish there were maybe a few more options for certain focal lengths for native mount manual focus lenses like those TTArtisan put out that are still high-quality metal construction. I shoot a lot with vintage Minolta and Pentax lenses, which work great for what I want, but the adapter ring when used on a body like a GX85 (especially with how Pentax is so long of a distance for the focal plane of the sensor to match) can get kind of bulky for something that is traditionally small like a 50mm.
I've been using TTArtisan for a while to get the focal lengths I want (40mm-85mm more or less) in a smaller package while keeping a lot of the look and feel of my older lenses. They're generally cheap enough to have equivalent focal lengths (for the most part) for both my APS-C and MFT bodies. For full frame I have a Pentax K-1 and it's all native pentax k anyway. I did have a Pentax KP that I regret selling because that body did great with vintage lenses (the smc-a series even had aperture priority working for those that use it).

Two part comment. I was extremely high when you review came on and thought my speakers were going crazy but realized it was your editing style. Very immersive and matched the tone and feel the fuji gives, so well done.
So I've always been conflicted between fujifilm and Sony... Went with Sony due to the amount of lenses and eco system and realized that's what's missing completely in the Sony line up. Not one lens that I have used/ seen has that "character" maybe some zeiss lenses and funny enough the cheaper Neewer lens that seem to have a coating on the lens. But u nailed it completely, this emphasis on optical perfection by manufacturers have made them lose sight of creating a lens that has a "feel and mood" shooting straight from the lens. I'm not the best editor and still learning but the look of the fujifilm in addition to this lens looks amazing.

It was my favorite Fujifilm lens for sure (currently using Canon RF) Other lenses that I liked were 16mm f 1.4 and 90mm f 2. Those three just had something in them. 35mm f 1.4 is something special indeed. That "look" just has something in it. It gives photos certain "old and slightly imperfect" look that no other Fuji lens can produce. If I ever return to Fujifilm X system, I will definitely get this lens again

Last comment, the crux of this video really hits home at the 6:01min mark for Fuji users and Fujifilm need to hear it! - character and personality over clinical optical performance - only having
this lens at the moment, I can honestly say without a doubt my next lens will either be Chinese as in 7Artisans, Laowa or Mitakon or yet again buying the Fuji to M mount adapter to only go vintage lens dumpster diving at my local camera guy's store! PS:- The author makes a point, check out the new 56mm MKII compared to the MKI - better optically? Probably, bigger and bulkier? Yes..

My favorite Fuji lens! I got it with my first X-E1 and still have it after selling all my Fuji bodies (waiting for an x-pro4) It is that good
It is noisy, slow to autofocus compared to new ones, extends externally and the rubber lens cover fall off after the material gives in over the years….
Still I love it 😝 and I dream of an x100 body with this focal length and characteristics… it’ll be my dream EDC camera. Keep up the awesome work!

6:30 You could get the Voigtlander 23mm f1.2 - although it's a manual focus lens, it's small, compact and actually has electronic contacts, and has tons of the vintage look and character that Voigtlander is known for. Also, do you prefer the Fuji 35mm f1.4 or the Zeiss 32mm? Amazing video as always!

This lens hasn’t left my X-S10 in 2022, same with the XF 27 “pancake lens” (1st gen.) on my X-E3 and the XF 18-135 on my X-T2. All three lenses have that Fuji magic that is mostly lost on my newer Fuji glass. Some other Fuji lenses I own that have the special sauce: XF 60, XC 15-45, XC 70-230, XF 50-140, XF 23 F2 and of course the XF 18-55 F2.8-4 “kit lens”.
Since switching to Fuji a few years ago, I’ve been pleasantly surprised that the most affordable lenses in the X mount system are the ones with the most “character,” especially for photography. The 15-45 and 18-55 work great for video too though.
