I think I've watched this video a dozen times. I'm a hobby photographer who takes pictures of my family. Whenever I start to feel like I'm losing my mojo or sense of direction, I watch this and get inspired again. Thanks for the effort you put into these wonderful videos!
Hey Joshua. Thanks so much for the nice comment. It's definitely natural to lose inspiration occasionally, but great when it comes back :-) Thanks again!
Thank you very very much Stefan, that's so kind. I'm really glad it was useful. I'm still learning, so maybe they'll be a part two someday 🙂 Thanks again.
First of your videos I’ve seen. Love the lack of a preamble, getting right to the value of the video for the viewers. The framing of your subscription request was so perfect I half regretted already subscribing. Love the low key lighting and the low key humor that had me laughing out loud more than once. Just, well done!
Love your photos - I have always thought that one of the goals of portrait photography is to provide dignity to the subject. All of your photos achieve this beautifully.
Thank you Ali, that's really kind of you. And thanks for sharing your thoughts. I think it's good to try to put in words what we aim to do as it helps to keep that in mind. That's a really nice way of putting it.
Your video is informationally fantastic. I appreciated the tonal quality of your voice as you deliver the emphasis needed but spoken in a matter of fact method. Do you happen to have a super short list of resource literature that you might speak about in another video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and perspective.
Thank you Bert, that's really kind. I will have a think about resources - mostly when I started out I watched instructional TH-cam videos, often about wedding photography. There are some great courses on CreativeLive.
Hi Chris, I'm a passive internet user, generally, but I feel compelled to reach out and thank you for sharing your knowledge of photography in such a tender tone. I've watched many of your videos now and have thoroughly enjoyed each one. I also share a love for bringing a film-like look into digital photography, as such I find the colour and warmth of your photos tremendous! Thanks for sharing and best wishes for the new year :-)
Hi Tenzin, thanks so much for your encouraging comment, I really appreciate it. I'm glad you've been enjoying the videos, I have a lot of fun making them and it means a lot to me that people like them. Thanks again and happy new year 🙂
Amazing, Chris. Now I know what I like the most about your work: portraits. Great photos. The tips are so helpful, too. I'll jot them down and considere them for my next session.
I can see how that would have taken you weeks, and painfully condensed into just 10 minutes. Nice work. I liked the Chinese bride in the church\cathedral photo a lot. And thanks for the "nose not breaking the cheekline" tip...useful!
Thanks very much Ted, I found it helpful to write - I'm sure there other other things going though my mind as well, but those were the ones I could think of.
Gorgeous portraits and great tips! I've always been intimated by portraiture, but your guide really helped answer some of the things I've been curious about
Super video amigo. May I ask if you mostly shoot landscape format and why your eye tends to see this more?. Also, are you a admirer of Don McCullin?, I know your images have a totally different theme and priority, but I don’t know why exactly, but your images have an Ora similar to his?.
Thank you. I think you might be the first person to point that out about shooting landscape. I do naturally like having the long edge being the width, it's more as you naturally see and more cinematic too I think. I do really like the Don McCullin pictures that I've seen, but am not too familiar - I will take a better look.
Hi Marky. I'm not sure so much about the grading - although for the black and white I especially play with orange and red and yellow channels. And generally I like them more contrasty. Here are the lenses etc... 1st picture is Nikon D700 with 70-200 @ 200mm @ f2.8. 2nd picture is Nikon D750 with Sigma 35mm Art lens @ f4 3rd picture is Nikon D700 with Nikon 85mm 1.8 @ 2.8
Also, I did note that in the video you'd link to some great books on colour theory in the description. I don't see them. Any chance you could please share?
Hi Luke, certainly. For some reason I tidied the description up and deleted the links. One was The Secret Lives Of Colour by Kassia St Clair. It's fun and interesting. The second is Interaction of Color by Josef Albers.
Beautiful portraits Chris. 👏👏👏
Thank you very much Sara!
A no frills and straight to the point video; we need more content like this on TH-cam. Thanks for the tips, Chris!
Thank you very much Francesco!

Wow Chris, this is a one year photography course in 10 minutes. Beautiful examples and after 30 years of photography still learned something! Thanks
Thank you very very much Stefan, that's so kind. I'm really glad it was useful. I'm still learning, so maybe they'll be a part two someday 🙂 Thanks again.

@@ChrisBoland I love how your portraits tell their stories! I haven't been able to do many portraits myself. Which lens are you looking to buy?
Thank you. I was looking at all sorts 🙂 The Fuji 50mm f1, some old medium format ones too. Maybe in the summer I'll treat myself.
@@ChrisBoland f1 lens! Sounds dreamy! 😆

Hello Chris, thank you for your videos.
Do you shoot in 16:9? If not what is your preferred aspect ratio for portraits?
Hi Joel. Nearly all of these are 2x3 I think. I tend to use that for everything - portraits, street, anything really.
Hello, I'm not speaking English and I don't understand. Please prompt your pictures processed?
Hi. I do process my pictures with Lightroom. 👍

The music in the background is very annoying why do so many people add it to tutorials when there is no need for it...!!
Thank you for your feedback Anthony !! You're the first person to mention this, but I'll take it on board all the same. Best wishes, Chris.
