Generations ago, Jenny Doan's grandmother embroidered flowers on scraps of denim. Now, Natalie and Jenny are honoring Grandma Ingrid with a quilt featuring her beloved floral designs.
Framed Squares is made with a precut layer cake from Indigo Denim by Robert Kaufman Fabrics. Each block is built around beautifully embroidered flowers. (But, of course, you can fill those blocks with anything you wish.)
This project is a labor of love. We've put together a heirloom embroidery kit with thread, notions, patterns, and instructions-all inside a beautiful, keepsake tin. The fabrics are available as a kit, and Natalie is filming an entire series of embroidery tutorials.
We know you will love creating something that will be treasured as dearly as we treasure Grandma Ingrid's wildflowers.

Jenny and Natalie, this was a wonderful video! It reminds me of my mother and me. As an eight and nine year old child in the later 1920’s, my mother embroidered flowers on scraps of muslin that her grandmother brought home from the cotton mill. She said her patterns came from newspapers. When I was a child, I used to admire her pieces of embroidery. When my mother was in her 70’s, I asked her what she had wanted to make with the flowers. She said she wanted to make a quilt with the blocks. I asked her how she imagined it being. She told me she wanted green fabric between the squares. The fabrics were not squares at all. They were just scraps of fabric. I asked her if I could take them with me. I lived in a different state at the time. I went into my first quilt store. The lady there told me to cut them all down to the size of the smallest piece which was about 8 or 9 inches. I had 32 flowers, I cut them all into squares. I picked out a pretty green fabric and natural color muslin. The store lady showed me how to cut the strips. Every time I got to the next step I went back to the quilt store for further instructions. After putting 30 of the squares together, I put a larger green border and an even larger muslin border. I hand quilted it by outlining around the outside of the flowers and then used plastic stencils to quilt the sashings and borders. I presented it to my mother and she had it on top of her bed for a couple of years. She then came to live with us due to Alzheimer’s, at which time my husband made a hanger for it on a large wall. It has been on our wall for close to thirty years in two different houses. At least my mother was able to enjoy it for a few years.

This video was perfect timing for me, since I just finished a quilt using blocks that my Swedish grandmother embroidered when she was in her teens or 20s--which would have been in the 1920s or earlier since she was born in 1905. Grandma lived to be 95. She was never a quilter, but gave me the blocks that she had made, and I held on to them for years trying to decide how to put them together. I wish I could include a photo. Each block, 18 in all, looks like a little basket filled with flowers, then has a circle of flowers around it. The quilt turned out so pretty. I too am happy to have an heirloom from my grandma.

My mother embroidered flowers as embellishments on a dress she made for me for Easter when I was about 10. She made all the seams extra wide so it could be taken apart and reassembled the next size larger a couple of times as I grew. I treasured that dress so much. She also crocheted and tatted. I have a few of her pieces, I want to learn to tat but videos just don’t cut it and it’s so hard to find someone to teach me. I’ve tried hand embroidery a couple of times but was never happy with how they turned out. This has inspired me to try it again, I’ve ordered the embroidery kit and think I need to order the quilt kit too. I’ll be thinking of my mother as I give it another try.

You guys should add an embroidery retreat to you list of wonderful retreats. Kind of a step back in time theme where the women could parlor embroidery together and have places around town where they could sit, embroider, visit, snack, etc. Have vintage theme all over town. I thing it would be famous because many of us are taking a step back in this troubled time we live in and this would be a welcome respite.

I’ve been hungry for this since “Triple Play: … 3 New Fence Rail Quilts” - Natalie’s fed my soul. You ALL are so talented & diversified. I learned embroidery from Mom, grandmothers, aunts, etc. This daughter & her girls (11 & 14) can do it too! I see it as a skill we are to pass on - to connect lives & loves. I also taught it in Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, & our country. Stitching is a fabulous icebreaker with no language or age barriers! An important skill to enhance so much. And, Mo. We used that kind of wash away stablizer in machine embroidery but let me tell you that will stop up your sink drain. I would rinse out in a bowl and throw the water outside.

Natalie I think you should meld your embroidery with your grandmas. What a special quilt that would be.

Yes, I thought the same thing. It’s like working on the project together. What a great thing to pass on to future generations.

Thanks so much for this, my Mam spent 2 years in a sanatorium with TB in 1950, she stitched and I have them. She sewed + knitted most of our clothes, all ten of us. She turned old winter coats inside out and make new one. She knitted for all her grandchildren + greatgrandchilden. I quilt for all my family + friends too, it's never perfect but I have learnt to let go of my desire to be perfect @

Natalie…absolutely mix your embroidery with your great grandmother’s. It would be a blending of the generations and a special nod to your grandma. ❤ I had a pair of jeans as a teen that I embroidered all over them. I absolutely loved those jeans. UPDATE: Maybe initial your blocks so generations to come will know who stitched which ones. And label your quilt!

Such a lovely quilt❤. I am from Sweden and ever since I was very young have I embroidered flowers on my jeans and on old jeans that I make bags from. I wonder if you can speak Swedish.

At my DIL’s baby shower we used fabric markers to draw on fabric squares. I decided to embroider the signatures to further preserve them. Turned out beautifully!

My mother was one of the oldest of 13. A very hard life during the depression. Lots of baby and child care for the oldest girls, as well as cooking and cleaning. A wonderful, patient mother to my brothers and myself. I did a lot of hand embroidery when I was younger but changed to machine embroidery due to arthritis. Your grandmothers embroidered flowers are beautiful and so precious. You are lucky to have them and the memories they bring. Nice idea to share them with us. Thank you.

I would love tips and tricks of quilting denim after it’s sewn together as a quilt top. I know my Moxie balks at the seam bulk!

Oh me too! You can see the love they both have.. The passion they both have. Accompanied by the love of their hobby and family!
The comment above though I have to say that when my family and I get together we're all talking over each other. We get so excited hahaha!! I love it. We start on one subject and then land on 20 others!! Before you know it, it's been hours of talking. And yes all talking over each other. Multiple conversations going on at the same time! Love it!!

Jenny and Natalie, this is such a remarkable trinbute to Ingrid. I suspect that she would be pleased that so many generations value the beauty of her work and amazed that strangers also love the beauty she created. I loved the interaction between you, remembering Ingrid, and the love you share in your family. I'll be revisiting this video when the world gets ugly and I need 25 minutes of family love, honor and respect. Thank you!
