I just discovered your video on top quilting. I was looking for blocks a month videos. I'm new to it. I don't have the cash to pay someone else to long arm. I have just finished my quilts with stitch in the ditch. I don't have the courage to do the free form top stitch like some do. I thank you so much for giving us these tips. I for sure will try it on my next quilt.
Great video! My favorite parts are EVERYTHING up to creating the quilt sandwich which I really hate. I don't even mind the quilting as much - it's just wrestling with the batting and the backing and the basting! I don't even mind the binding. I'm like you - I love cutting, piecing, squaring, and creating the quilt top. I have a LOT of tops folded up, waiting for the quilting process. If a quilt is one I really love, or is special in some way, I'll send it out to the long-armer, but to keep this hobby (which can become expensive) a little more managable financially, I do most of my quilting myself on my domestic machine.
Yes the quilt sandwich is such a difficult part of the process! I agree with you about choosing which quilts to send out for special quilting! I do the same! I send ones I really love or that is just very special for some reason, perhaps an important gift!

Hi. Instead of gaging where to turn on expanding square use a cross drawn lines to the corners and the filling in 1/4 at a time use a middle drawn line each direction. These lines are where to stop needle to change direction. Lovely designs.
Your walking foot has a metal bar that goes in that hole on the side of the walking foot. You adjust that for the straight line stitching. You can use it for circular sewing also. I saw the hole in the foot.
I’m thankful that I found this video tonight. I’ve gotten so disgusted with myself for never finishing anything, Ive considered getting rid of all of it and never making a whole quilt! This shoes me that I can do it!
I agree with hat spray basting is expensive. I use washable glue basting ( Elmer's School glue). It adheres well. Needle passes through easily and it all washes away after quilting. At a fraction of the cost I love it.

These are great techniques! I have a sit-down long arm and my favorite part of quitting is piecing the top. If I could sell the tops and let whoever buys them do the sandwiching and quilting, I would be very happy!
To help with drag, I like to have the side to your left rolled up as I quilt. I find it easier to move and it's easy to unroll as you go. I have used clips like Dritz Quilter's Roll Clips to clip the rolled portion. (Sorry, I couldn't post an image.) Sometimes I will also roll the part that's on my lap/over your shoulder, although not clip it. My favorite part is doing the top; although I also like hand-quilting I don't have the stamina or patience for it anymore.

I could probably send my quilts (I make only a few each year) out to a long armer, but I'm one of those people that feels it's made by me only if I've done every step, piece, quilt, bind. I got the book you mentioned and do find it a great inspiration. I hadn't done the V's but I love the way yours looked. I happen to be making a table topper block that looks a lot like yours. Thank you for the ideas. Many quilts are beautifully and intricately quilted, but are also intimidating. Your five samples show us how to our quilts can look great. Spacing the parallel lines close does make the quilting look intricate and impressive, but the technique is inviting rather than intimidating.
Walk and Walk 2.0 are my favorite quilting related books. I’m determined to finish my placemats this year. Each of them will use a different quilting design because I want as much practice as possible.
Great video! Quilting was my least favorite part until I invested in classes to teach me FM quilting. Now I love that part too! I have a Juki straight stitch machine and with lots of practice, I’m no longer embarrassed at my free-motion product. I’m obsessed with quilting feathers. Glide thread is my favorite and gives stunning results. I’m looking forward to your completing all your UFOs!
I usually quilt small projects, but I am beginning to do throw-size quilts. I always sew using a cross-hatch, which is my favorite. You have shown some new ways to quilt and I will definitely try them. Thank you for the great ideas!
My favorite part is probably piecing but if I’m being honest I love all of it. I do sometimes struggle with my OCD when it comes to quilting on my domestic machine. I’ve mostly done straight line quilting and some with decorative stitches but if my lines aren’t perfectly straight I get frustrated. I watched this video a couple times and hearing you say, ‘I’m not going to stress about it.’ and ‘I’m good with that.’ Made me really think about what I was doing. I guess every now and then I need to hear others say the things that I forget to say to myself! Thank you for another awesome video that allowed me to finish a quilt today that I walked away from several days ago!💞😊
I hope you hear those phrases next time you quilt too! We are so hard on ourselves and often it isn’t even something that is noticeable when the quilt is completely finished!

Then, I pointed it out to him and he said he still couldn’t see what I was talking about! Again thank you for the reassuring words! I love your channel! Also, I absolutely love your slide lock ruler set, trine lock ruler set and the iron shaped clapper my husband gave me for Christmas! I would be lost without now that I know how easy they make cutting and getting super flat seams!!!

My favorite way to quilt mine is free motion quilting. I feel constrained if I have to do straight lines so my walking foot has never been used. I used to call myself a Top Gun quilter...I feel the need, the need for speed, LOL. My machine currently is a Janome Horizon Memory Craft 8200 Special Edition. There is something about the effect of symmetrical straight lines for smaller quilts, though, that is very appealing. ~Cynthia, N. GA mountains

I appreciate the need to save dollars when quilting. I have been making my own basting spray. It is very economical and works quite well. Thank you for sharing your time and skills. I will definitely give your ideas a try.
@sewbeitquilts Chatterbox Quilts on youtube. "Make Quilt Basting Spray" is the name of the video. I have used washable school glue also. When I used the school blue I only quilted a sample and then I washed and dried it to see how well I would like it and it turned out well also. I think the homemade spray base is more economical and it is easy to apply. One recipe was enough for a queen size quilt and a thirty" by forty" wall hanging.

I rarely have small quilts like you are demoing on. So logistically mine are more cumbersome and not as easy to manuever, thus my shoulders take a beating. But nice job of demoing and very lovely quilts.
Oh my gosh! My hair was down past my waist...in everything! I got a buzz cut, maybe a little extreme, but I'm loving it. Did have to knit a beanie because it's cooler in this winter weather. Love your explanations and direction. Clear and simple❤
This is great, thanks. I've bought a bigger machine just to make this easier because like you I'm a piecer, but also sending things off to get longarm quilted is really expensive. I do narrow unruled straight lines, contours, and stitch in the ditch. I'm trying to expand, so I appreciate these ideas.
Love these ideas, especially the one with the Vs and the one with the wavy lines. Great ideas. All of the quilting made the quilts come to life. And yes, I have hair all over mine, too. Why is that? 😂
Your opening comments reminded me of the time a friend's daughter busted her in a quilting store. When she was asked about her mom's quilts, she innocently said, "Oh she doesn't finish them. She just starts them." The whole place erupted in gentle, understanding laughter, and the ladies there (customers and staff) assured my friend that they had a lot of UFO's also.
Thank you, thank you, thank you...I have half a dozen or more quilt tops and others that just need to be pieced together. I NEVER know how to quilt them at the end. I do not want to ruin the quilt by picking the wrong pattern or technique, so I just play and then fold and put away. This gives me so many ideas on simple endings. Now to get busy.

I just found this channel! I am like you when it comes to quilting. Lots of tops and none completed. I do a lot of free motion quilting just to get them done when someone wants one. lol😂
I enjoy all parts of it. Least is layering and beginning the basting mainly if it is queen size or larger. Best is piecing and I enjoy the binding process. I use the straight line method with the diamond criss cross pattern. Beautiful quilts. Thank you for sharing your tips and ideas.
recently I stumbled across using Elmer's school glue to baste quilts......total game changer..now i actually want to completely finish a quilt..it doesn't break needles or gum them up and it's affordable and you glue your sandwich and their is no more fussing no pins no headaches.

I have quilted most of my pieces with straight lines using walking foot and the little bar that you push into it's side. The bar rides along your last line and fits on both sides of your foot. I've also used a wavy line on my small Brother (computer) machine. My fav part though is piecing the top!

My favorite part is the piecing and seeing the quilt come together. I make so many quilts that I bought a longarm 4 years ago so I could get them done. I used to quilt on my domestic machine but never enjoyed it.
I've tried ruler work with FMQ. I cannot do it well at all. BUT I never thought about using a ruler with the walking foot. I will definitely be trying it on my next quilting project. Thank you so much for such a great tip.

This process is portrayed well. Its not just awkward but tiring on the arms. However, thats how it goes! Ive moved fom making large uilts ti making mini quiltetttes. These are more challenging as far as the piecing goes, which is goid at raising ones game. Quilting is then another challenge in other ways! 😅 But this us why I do it..to meet challenges while creating beautiful things. As do all patchworkers and quilters! Great videoexpressing a lot of what lies behind the quilts we make add give away. Or sell, in some cases. Even leaving our quilts to those working the large longarms requires their very different skills that need to be acknowledged. Thank you for this video.
My least favourite part of making a quilt is sandwiching and basting, basting is a bit better since I discovered 505 spray. My favourite part is sewing on the binding. I do one side by machine and the other by hand. I quite enjoy hand quilting even though I’m not the best, I find it very relaxing. I always practice for 5-10 minutes on a scrap to get my rhythm going before I start on the actual quilt. When machine quilting I like to use the metal seam guide bar that slots into my walking foot to measure the spaces between quilting rows. It means you only need to mark one or two stitching lines, you can even use it on curves or wavy lines and you can get the space exactly the size you want. Like you I always start at the same side when machine quilting lines. I find it stops puckering and pulling on the back of the quilt, which I get if I go up and down. This year I’d like to try and get the hang of FMQ, my new machine has a stitch regulator so my stitches should be the same length and that was what always put me off. I hate uneven stitches.
I hand sewed my first binding on recently and it was so relaxing! I may not do that for all of them but I think I will again from time to time. I do have that metal bar too, but mine is held in place by a tiny screw and it never gets tight enough to keep the bar even. Maybe there is a trick to it but mine hasn’t worked for me. I can see how it would be really helpful if I could keep it even!
My bar was not tight on my machine so my husband cut a piece of plastic straw and used about a quarter of the round of the straw in the space with the bar. Now it stays in place. Hope this helps someone.
Basting is my least favorite as well. I use the 505, however haven't found a method that I can get the backing tight enough. I only sew across, never across and down, because the backing will pucker. I have found that I do like straight line or a wavy line or wavy interlocking random lines. If doing straight lines, I use the guide that came with my walking foot.
I completely dread making a quilt sandwich, especially if I've had to piece a backing! Ohhh how I love 108s! I've done a wavy type matchstick on a table runner that came out awesome! I'm hand quilting a lap/twin quilt and a table runner with almost big stitch straight line quilting. Other than that, it's straight on my domestic,but trying to follow peaks and simple straight lines with a variation of widths and / or directions. But when I can afford it, I send them to a local longarm quilter! Thanks for the great video and book informatio!
The quilt sandwich is exhausting! It is also frustrating when I feel like I did a good job getting it nice and flat and even then it bubbles when I quilt it! I have two quilts I started hand quilting. I need to get those finished this year! We both have two of those projects too! How fun!
This was great! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! I too cannot afford to pay a long armer. Even though I REALLY want to. The one I learned first and is the easiest for me is a STRAIGHT STITCH 1/4" away from my seam lines on both sides. I've done it on a handful of quilt tops and small projects and looks very nice. I have a 16" block that I just finished. I think I will use your "V" technique on that one. Just to practice on. 😉 And I have done the wavy lines only one time. That too was also very nice quilting and very fun to do so.

I do love the result when I did crossing-hatching on 3 quilts on my domestic machine. Now I am trying to quilt one I have had for (embarrassed to say) 12 yrs hanging in a closet. lol. I want to try a different pattern as cross-hatchling was a job for me to set up. I tried painters tape and I tried using that “bar” that goes on the back of my walking foot, I still didn’t stay on the lines. Maybe I should look at your rulers. That looks pretty easy! Don’t be embarrassed! You will get to that quilt when it’s the right time! I can’t get that dang bar to work for me either. It seems like it moves around. I can’t get it tight enough to stay in place.
well, I did it! I went to your online store and bought 3 of your rulers! lol I will let you know how they work for me. I saw Tiffany using one that helps her with cutting on her channel a while back so I thought, why not?
I really like the wavy line quilting technique and use it especially on bigger quilts. I do have problems with forgetting which direction I was heading in when I need to stop to adjust my quilt. So sometimes my wavy lines are a bit bumpier than I would like! Thanks for all these great ideas which I will try.
I really enjoyed this video and the different methods to use on a domestic machine. I have been doing straight line quilting "in the ditch" mostly so I appreciated you sharing these. I haven't ever used a free motion foot. I need to try it out. The feet are expensive, too. I tried to wave with a regular foot on just a baby blanket (not pieced) and it looked ok for my first try with a regular foot. Im looking forward to trying something you shared. Thanks again!
You are so right, all of the foot add ons for sewing machines are so expensive! I sometimes use my regular foot to quilt too. It gets the job done when needed!

Hey, Fallon! Perfect timing! I’m looking for options for my stack of quilt sandwiches. I love these! The pattern on the star quilt will be perfect for a disappearing hourglass quilt that I’m making for my local hospice. I need to minimize quitting since they’ve asked for a lightweight quilt. It will add interest without the added weight. Using the side of the walking foot with the ruler is a great idea! Especially with low shank machines-I have some rulers that are too thick for Ooooh…that pinwheel quilt would be perfect for a kids quilt that I want to make with a my bundle of Tula’s True Colours Tiny Coordinates for our hospital’s fundraising auction. ANY suggestion re a colour to use for the pinwheels?❓❓I’m considering a neutral-perhaps a medium grey? I’ve seen the WALK book, but haven’t been able to see one in person to see how helpful it would be. I might have to consider it again. Oops! Sorry for the long comment. I love quilting using the wavy line stitch on my quilt going diagonally. The design on the back is really neat. One thing to think about with some of the techniques you use on your smaller quilts is to use them on quilts with bigger blocks as quilt as you go. Then join blocks together after quilting.

My go to is stitch in the ditch I’ve used painters tape for cross hatch I’ve also have used chalk roller do my version of candle stick stitch inside shapes free motion on larger quilts is a nightmare with small throat space love your tips. My favorite part of quilting is designing patterns picking out fabric and piecing them together the yucky part is pinning my sandwich together lol😅

I started glue basting with Elmers Washable glue. It's a game changer. So fast and easy.

I love to press. I could stand with an iron and ironing board for hours. So satisfying to see all the wrinkles gone and it smooth and crisp.

When I started quilting it was the quilting I loved doing but over time I've come to enjoy all parts of quilting.

Thank you for the ideas. Many quilts are beautifully and intricately quilted, but are also intimidating. Your five samples show us how to our quilts can look great. Spacing the parallel lines close does make the quilting look intricate and impressive, but the technique is inviting rather than intimidating.
Walk and Walk 2.0 are my favorite quilting related books. I’m determined to finish my placemats this year. Each of them will use a different quilting design because I want as much practice as possible.

Great video! Quilting was my least favorite part until I invested in classes to teach me FM quilting. Now I love that part too! I have a Juki straight stitch machine and with lots of practice, I’m no longer embarrassed at my free-motion product. I’m obsessed with quilting feathers. Glide thread is my favorite and gives stunning results. I’m looking forward to your completing all your UFOs!
Feathers are my next goal to learn how to free motion! I am determined to practice more this year!

My favorite part is probably piecing but if I’m being honest I love all of it. I do sometimes struggle with my OCD when it comes to quilting on my domestic machine. I’ve mostly done straight line quilting and some with decorative stitches but if my lines aren’t perfectly straight I get frustrated. I watched this video a couple times and hearing you say, ‘I’m not going to stress about it.’ and ‘I’m good with that.’ Made me really think about what I was doing. I guess every now and then I need to hear others say the things that I forget to say to myself! Thank you for another awesome video that allowed me to finish a quilt today that I walked away from several days ago!💞😊
I hope you hear those phrases next time you quilt too! We are so hard on ourselves and often it isn’t even something that is noticeable when the quilt is completely finished!

Then, I pointed it out to him and he said he still couldn’t see what I was talking about! Again thank you for the reassuring words! I love your channel! Also, I absolutely love your slide lock ruler set, trine lock ruler set and the iron shaped clapper my husband gave me for Christmas! I would be lost without now that I know how easy they make cutting and getting super flat seams!!!

My favorite way to quilt mine is free motion quilting. I feel constrained if I have to do straight lines so my walking foot has never been used. I used to call myself a Top Gun quilter...I feel the need, the need for speed, LOL. My machine currently is a Janome Horizon Memory Craft 8200 Special Edition. There is something about the effect of symmetrical straight lines for smaller quilts, though, that is very appealing. ~Cynthia, N. GA mountains

I appreciate the need to save dollars when quilting. I have been making my own basting spray. It is very economical and works quite well. Thank you for sharing your time and skills. I will definitely give your ideas a try.
Do you make your own spray by using Elmers glue? Or do you have another method?
@sewbeitquilts Chatterbox Quilts on youtube. "Make Quilt Basting Spray" is the name of the video. I have used washable school glue also. When I used the school blue I only quilted a sample and then I washed and dried it to see how well I would like it and it turned out well also. I think the homemade spray base is more economical and it is easy to apply. One recipe was enough for a queen size quilt and a thirty" by forty" wall hanging.
My favorite part is being finished so I can start another one.

I rarely have small quilts like you are demoing on. So logistically mine are more cumbersome and not as easy to manuever, thus my shoulders take a beating. But nice job of demoing and very lovely quilts.
Oh my gosh! My hair was down past my waist...in everything! I got a buzz cut, maybe a little extreme, but I'm loving it. Did have to knit a beanie because it's cooler in this winter weather.

This is great, thanks. I've bought a bigger machine just to make this easier because like you I'm a piecer, but also sending things off to get longarm quilted is really expensive. I do narrow unruled straight lines, contours, and stitch in the ditch. I'm trying to expand, so I appreciate these ideas.
Love these ideas, especially the one with the Vs and the one with the wavy lines. Great ideas. All of the quilting made the quilts come to life. And yes, I have hair all over mine, too. Why is that? 😂

Your opening comments reminded me of the time a friend's daughter busted her in a quilting store. When she was asked about her mom's quilts, she innocently said, "Oh she doesn't finish them. She just starts them." The whole place erupted in gentle, understanding laughter, and the ladies there (customers and staff) assured my friend that they had a lot of UFO's also.
That sure is me! Lol!
Thank you, thank you, thank you...I have half a dozen or more quilt tops and others that just need to be pieced together. I NEVER know how to quilt them at the end. I do not want to ruin the quilt by picking the wrong pattern or technique, so I just play and then fold and put away. This gives me so many ideas on simple endings. Now to get busy.

I enjoy all parts of it. Least is layering and beginning the basting mainly if it is queen size or larger. Best is piecing and I enjoy the binding process. I use the straight line method with the diamond criss cross pattern. Beautiful quilts. Thank you for sharing your tips and ideas.
recently I stumbled across using Elmer's school glue to baste quilts......total game changer..now i actually want to completely finish a quilt..it doesn't break needles or gum them up and it's affordable and you glue your sandwich and their is no more fussing no pins no headaches.

I have quilted most of my pieces with straight lines using walking foot and the little bar that you push into it's side. The bar rides along your last line and fits on both sides of your foot. I've also used a wavy line on my small Brother (computer) machine. My fav part though is piecing the top!
I can’t get the bar to work on my machine. I can’t get it tight enough so that it doesn’t move around. Any tips?

My favorite part is the piecing and seeing the quilt come together. I make so many quilts that I bought a longarm 4 years ago so I could get them done. I used to quilt on my domestic machine but never enjoyed it.
It can be a struggle with larger quilts! I hope to one day own a longarm!
I've tried ruler work with FMQ. I cannot do it well at all. BUT I never thought about using a ruler with the walking foot. I will definitely be trying it on my next quilting project. Thank you so much for such a great tip.

This process is portrayed well. Its not just awkward but tiring on the arms. However, thats how it goes! Ive moved fom making large uilts ti making mini quiltetttes. These are more challenging as far as the piecing goes, which is goid at raising ones game. Quilting is then another challenge in other ways! 😅 But this us why I do it..to meet challenges while creating beautiful things. As do all patchworkers and quilters! Great videoexpressing a lot of what lies behind the quilts we make add give away. Or sell, in some cases. Even leaving our quilts to those working the large longarms requires their very different skills that need to be acknowledged. Thank you for this video.
My least favourite part of making a quilt is sandwiching and basting, basting is a bit better since I discovered 505 spray. My favourite part is sewing on the binding. I do one side by machine and the other by hand. I quite enjoy hand quilting even though I’m not the best, I find it very relaxing. I always practice for 5-10 minutes on a scrap to get my rhythm going before I start on the actual quilt. When machine quilting I like to use the metal seam guide bar that slots into my walking foot to measure the spaces between quilting rows. It means you only need to mark one or two stitching lines, you can even use it on curves or wavy lines and you can get the space exactly the size you want. Like you I always start at the same side when machine quilting lines. I find it stops puckering and pulling on the back of the quilt, which I get if I go up and down. This year I’d like to try and get the hang of FMQ, my new machine has a stitch regulator so my stitches should be the same length and that was what always put me off. I hate uneven stitches.
I hand sewed my first binding on recently and it was so relaxing! I may not do that for all of them but I think I will again from time to time.
I do have that metal bar too, but mine is held in place by a tiny screw and it never gets tight enough to keep the bar even. Maybe there is a trick to it but mine hasn’t worked for me. I can see how it would be really helpful if I could keep it even!
My bar was not tight on my machine so my husband cut a piece of plastic straw and used about a quarter of the round of the straw in the space with the bar. Now it stays in place. Hope this helps someone.
Basting is my least favorite as well. I use the 505, however haven't found a method that I can get the backing tight enough. I only sew across, never across and down, because the backing will pucker.
I have found that I do like straight line or a wavy line or wavy interlocking random lines. If doing straight lines, I use the guide that came with my walking foot.
You’re a finisher. That’s great that you love the end. I love piecing and binding. Quilting is hard to wrestle a large lap quilt on my domestic.

I completely dread making a quilt sandwich, especially if I've had to piece a backing! Ohhh how I love 108s! I've done a wavy type matchstick on a table runner that came out awesome! I'm hand quilting a lap/twin quilt and a table runner with almost big stitch straight line quilting. Other than that, it's straight on my domestic,but trying to follow peaks and simple straight lines with a variation of widths and / or directions. But when I can afford it, I send them to a local longarm quilter! Thanks for the great video and book informatio!
The quilt sandwich is exhausting! It is also frustrating when I feel like I did a good job getting it nice and flat and even then it bubbles when I quilt it!

It is really interesting to me how simply varying the spacing on straight line quilting can add such depth to a quilt.

This was great! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! I too cannot afford to pay a long armer. Even though I REALLY want to. The one I learned first and is the easiest for me is a STRAIGHT STITCH 1/4" away from my seam lines on both sides. I've done it on a handful of quilt tops and small projects and looks very nice. I have a 16" block that I just finished. I think I will use your "V" technique on that one. Just to practice on. 😉 And I have done the wavy lines only one time. That too was also very nice quilting and very fun to do so.

I do love the result when I did crossing-hatching on 3 quilts on my domestic machine. Now I am trying to quilt one I have had for (embarrassed to say) 12 yrs hanging in a closet. lol. I want to try a different pattern as cross-hatchling was a job for me to set up. I tried painters tape and I tried using that “bar” that goes on the back of my walking foot, I still didn’t stay on the lines. Maybe I should look at your rulers. That looks pretty easy! Thank you for sharing

I really like the wavy line quilting technique and use it especially on bigger quilts. I do have problems with forgetting which direction I was heading in when I need to stop to adjust my quilt. So sometimes my wavy lines are a bit bumpier than I would like! Thanks for all these great ideas which I will try.
Right there with ya. Love tops cannot stand putting them together. The quilting to me is so hard on larger than baby quilts
I really enjoyed this video and the different methods to use on a domestic machine. I have been doing straight line quilting "in the ditch" mostly so I appreciated you sharing these. I haven't ever used a free motion foot. I need to try it out. The feet are expensive, too. I tried to wave with a regular foot on just a baby blanket (not pieced) and it looked ok for my first try with a regular foot. Im looking forward to trying something you shared. Thanks again!
You are so right, all of the foot add ons for sewing machines are so expensive! I sometimes use my regular foot to quilt too. It gets the job done when needed!

I love to do waves lines. The stitch is built into my Viking machine in several sizes.
Mine is a straight stitch only so I have to create the waves myself! I am sure having the lines built in is so helpful!

I love quilting using the wavy line stitch on my quilt going diagonally. The design on the back is really neat. One thing to think about with some of the techniques you use on your smaller quilts is to use them on quilts with bigger blocks as quilt as you go. Then join blocks together after quilting.

My go to is stitch in the ditch I’ve used painters tape for cross hatch I’ve also have used chalk roller do my version of candle stick stitch inside shapes free motion on larger quilts is a nightmare with small throat space love your tips. My favorite part of quilting is designing patterns picking out fabric and piecing them together the yucky part is pinning my sandwich together lol😅
