This video was the deciding factor that made me go with the Lin76 which Ive paired with a Heritage Audio 1073 Clone with Eq. These units together put out an incredible sound!!!
Thank you for mentioning that all gear may be calibrated differently. I've seen way too many comparisons where people are turning the knobs to the exact same positions and making their judgements solely on that instead of using their ears to compare the quality.
I have my Lindell LN76 chained behind an Art Tube MP and behind that I have chained one channel of an Art Pro VLA 2. This gives me vocals that are undeniably stellar.
I agree ! the Art VLA 2was a shock to me after listening to many high end comps years ago. We had an ART to "get us by " in a film pre-prod studio and we ended up using all the recordingd in the final mix. Soooo nice for tracking when you're going to smash it anyway later or not
UREI sounds amazing, so well balanced on every source (none of the others came close on bass IMO, they distorted the low end too much). The Lindell sounded great overall, and the KT was very decent as well. Not a big fan of the WARM 76. Great video, great demo!
The Lindell 76 to me sounds like it has a little more bottom end than the original UREI but sounds great and I don't mind that at a lower price point because it means I can afford more of them!
Spot on for what my assessment was listening through my studio monitors. I will definitely be checking out the Lindell and most likely adding it to the arsenal.
Thank you for taking the time to do this comparison. Really appreciate it. The Lindell is sounding very good. I have the warm audio and it has served me well. On a side note, I am sorry to be "that guy" but the bass guitar was out of tune and it was driving me crazy. LOL. Warm was my fav on guitar, Lindell was my fav on drums and bass. The KT sounded shrill and clinical to me. I owed the KT unit for a few months and sold it. I would say "there isn't a noticeable difference between the warm audio and the real UREI". But this comparison definitely shows that the UREI is noticeably better than the three clones. To me its not worth the $ difference, but there is an audible difference to my ear. On the vocal the warm was my fav. The singer has a nasal quality that was emphasized to a point where it sounded unpleasant to me. I didn't like with some of the compressors.
I really like Lindell audio! I got the Lin2A and the PEX-500 eq's. I'm planning in getting the Lin76 compressor pair. They did a gorgeous job with the compressors.
I received another unit after the first one I received came with the knobs stripped, and once I hooked it up and got going the sound was beautiful. I'm loving my Lindell LN76.
IMO if a person complains about the sound of the klark teknik, warm audio or even the lindell over the UA1176 then they are gear snobs that are just plain aggrevating and ruins it for everyone else. the warm audio, KT and Lindell are designed to give the user a close as possible experience without going broke, I don't see how any one can complain about the clones that can give the user a really good sound without spending 1000s of dollars to do it. I own 2 KT units and will be investing in 2 of the lindell units. I have a ton of plugins. if the UAs were cheaper I would buy them but the clones are really close and no listener that knows nothing about music recording or studio gear will ever know or even care about the gear
Brand snobbery is rampant in the pro audio community. Back in the 90s when I started studios all had unique gear they liked and the price or brand didn’t matter. Today it’s the opposite with everyone hating anything budget and only praising the most expensive.
Yeah.......Timp P 76.....or AA Silver.... will give you at least 90% of that same snap and analog sound to make it not worth it, spending an outrageous amount of money on those units
Funny thing is (to my ears anyway) When I only owned the original Urei 1176 I was so excited to buy a new UA 1176 so I could have 2....(again, to my ears) the UA reissue sounded pretty bad, dull, no life, soo... I sent it back..all of these clones sound better to me.
UAD....there really falling off....best 76.....for its price....Acustica Audio Silver.....ART Trans y..or Black Rooster VLAFET....PSP FET....or PA Purple...
The lindell sounds pretty good gotta admit it has a sound to it that is just really charming. Adding a little more to the top in. The warms have always been decent but never got into the klarks had a pair but sent em back it never sounded like they were doing much on my drum bus.
Definitely feel like the Lindell is most accurate eq wise and how the compression is reacting. One big difference I heard is with the non smashed drums and the bass, the bottom end is much more round and a bit more pleasant to my ear on the urei. I did actually feel like the klark did the round low end better but also a bit darker all around. Not a huge fan of the warm but for the price compared to the urei none of them had a cheap or unpleasant sound. I’m lucky to have access to a vintage urei but will definitely be picking up a lin76 because at that price, why not have some extra 1176 style channels.
the major difference I hear, especially on the guitars, is that each unit has a different high mid/high frequency resonance/notch, but not sure if that is an overall volume mismatch or something inherent in the units. thanks for the video! very fun exercise
Awesome review. For me, there was not much in it, which lends well to my budget, maybe the lindell is the middle ground between kt and warm, and budget also.
Nice video and nice comparison. Thanks for doing it. BTW: Your studio in LI is right next store to my location. I am at the start of the Jersey Shore... Phil
Can you let me know what test tone you used for the KT-76. I think my unit is not right. What GR should i expect to see with a -18dbRMS 1K sine wave with the controls at default (In 10 oclock, Out 2 o clock, Slowest attack, fastest release and 4:1 ratio)?
That is not how you do it. You need to take the compression off and then calibrate with the level recommended by the manufacturer. My UREI 1178 which is a stereo 1176 calibrates to 0 VU with a -16 test tone at 1K. If Klark Teknik doesn’t have the calibration posted you should set the output to 24 with NO compression so take all the buttons out, and then ramp the input up with a -18dbfs 1K test tone until you reach unity gain of 0 VU on the output. Not all hardware works the same even if they are clones of something else. I have 3 LA-2 clones and all of them react differently based on the input gain. So in all honesty the best way to learn how to make hardware sound it’s best is to use it until you are familiar with it. Hope this helps you out.
UREI have a perfect cube compression with solid definition and timbre ... Lindell have a more like a piramidal shape with clear definition and timbre just not so dense ... Klak Teknik is just a little brick shape, you get just the top flavor ... Warm Audio have also a Piramidal shape tendency but with a lack of definition and a edgy timbre ... In the budget area I definitely choose the Lindell
Have you had the opportunity to listen to the Revive Audio modded versions of the Lin76 or the Lin2a? I’m pretty curious how they sound after the circuits are replaced along with the optical sensor. If the Lin76 is really that close to the original sound, the mods may be a waste, but perhaps the Lin2a mods could make it into a pretty impressive unit.
The problem with budget clone gear it's not going to hold up well compared to a real 1176. Usually the quality of components hense the price aren't in the same league. I think BLA does a nice job selecting top shelf components at a reasonable price that seems to better made than Warm Audio and many others that utilizes a lot of cheap Chinese parts, esp PCB components.
I have a problem keeping calibration at 0. It will drift forward. The knob to adjust it on the back is hypersensitive as well. It really turned out to be a bummer of a purchase.
UREI is amazing sounding but since that's not an option I think the only choice is between the KT or the Lindell, they are that close to each other. I'm surprised the engineer noted the KT losing clarity on the sybillant vocal what I heard was a cleaner clamping on the sybillant part of the vocal, he's there I'm not but based on the demonstration samples, the KT and Lindell are very very close. The Warm did nothing for me at all, sounded cheap. I'm using Neumann NDH 30 headphones and Senn HD650's. YMMV
Seems strange that you don’t directly compare the Lindell to the Urei, it’s kinda the point of the video and you went from the urei to the warm each time? Well, I ordered a couple anyways. We’ll see

First of all thanks for revie, now in your opinion for voice tracking paired with tube preamp ( wich have enough color ) wich one should i choose beetwen warm, KT, and Lindell ton control peak and sit in mix ?
So when you do parallel drum mixes do you go mono in the parallel bus? What drawbacks does that have over stereo? I use a Drawmer 1978 for my bus right now in stereo, but just picked up a Lindell 76 and really like it. Was just curious how YOU do it. Thanks again!
Hey, uh, no I don’t do mono parallel compression..like most I do stereo. For this vid I only had one of each soo…mono is what we got!! That Drawmer 1978 is awesome! Have used it before.
Sounds to me like the klark teknik has a slower attack and faster release compared to the others or at least doesn't have the same control as the others. The lindell sounds a bit boosted in the low end and a bit darker in the highs compared to the urei. perhaps a bit muddier. I dunno but maybe i like the warm audio better out of those 3. but i dunno. if i had to chose between warm and lindell it would definitely be a tough choice for me. A friend of mine has the warm audio one. so i kind of want a different one in case they end up in the same place at some point.
