  • We've had great fun in this video comparing various revisions of classic 1176 compressor with a few modern-day clones, and two of the most popular plugins.
    Many thanks to FX Rentals - www.fxgroup.net for providing us with:
    2 Urei 1776 revision H silverface
    2 Universal Audio 1176 revision D blackface
    1 Universal Audio 1176 LN reissue
    1 Purple Audio MC76
    And to Doug Hunt - www.doughunt.co.uk for providing us with 2 Klark Teknik 76-KT units, and to Sam Russel for the Hairball revision D kit version.
    A huge thank you also to the superb musicians who provided their ample talents specifically for this project:
    Andy Platts (vocals) - www.mamasgun.co.uk and younggunsilverfox

    This is probably the best "sound video" on TH-cam!
    Awesome musicians, good gain matching of the examples, no inaccurate or misunderstood information, a good signal path, an interesting history lesson and no craving for e-mail addresses :D

      The drums really showed that; silver face smashed that. I liked it on the guitar and bass too. Though on the guitar I thought the black face had a thicker, smoother more pleasing sound. But, I think mostly that was just the effect it had on tone shaping, than the compression.

      @keylimetrpt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it seems the KTs don't have quite the same exact parameters for attack speed as the higher priced boys. It seems like its just not able to go quite as fast

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Owen Murphy The attack time is variable from 20-800 microseconds, so on paper it certainly stacks up, but it does sound slightly behind the original units on grabbing those transients.

From all the reviews ive seen on any of the Klark Teknik products they are hit or miss due to bad quality control, but im willing to take the risk. They sound fantastic when its a properly functioning unit.

      Yeah odd, the first thing I thought to comment on is ‘what’s up with Slate?’, then saw this comment immediately at the top…
      …maybe he dialed the exact settings between clones when Slate is setup differently for some reason…? (Sounded ‘whack’ in a bad way, but volume sometimes was off as well as tonality).

    My personal all around favourite is the purple audio. Not only is it relatively affordable, it sounds great, distorts properly amd musically, and is easily available compares to the original units. Would be my go to for high end analog 1176 sounds. The Purple Audio shines in high mid stuff like vocals and guitars. The Hairball was the most balanced with the Urei D version. The Urei H was the most mojo of them all. KT was quite tasteless, but surprisingly it felt better than the UA. The Waves distortion was nice in parts but was lacking high end definition. The Slate was just not good.

    In the mix comparison I had a liking for the Hairball over all the others for some reason I couldn't quite put my finger on. Except for bass, I liked the purple best. Very interesting differences overall. Great work guys!

    Thanks for taking on the Herculean task of doing this shoot out. It should've gotten about 10 times the views. Interesting how different the various revisions reacted to each instrument. Obviously, it would be nice to have a silverface (was offered by a friend to buy one at the going rate, but declined), but for overall compression tasks, I was happy with the UA reissue - it retained a nice amount of headroom in all tests.

    I have 4 v.H 76s and a same vintage stereo 78. I purchased all five units for $800 from two sources. The 76s are nicely consistent, sound great with zero effort. They are so-so reliable, but a breeze to maintain on my own. To me, they are for vocal and guitar, period, where they are truly magic. Drums and bass love the LA-4 and 5, almost laughable how perfect they sound on kick and snare with 5 seconds of setup. They are becoming so valuable I will probably sell them as I now work strictly in the box. I will miss them for sure. They are the first things visitors see, such is their rep. That is very valuable, but not $16K valuable to me. Some buyer will treasure them, perfectly restored as they are.

      The KT doesn't have the off mode to work solely as a preamp. Other than that its great. It still has the super fast attack of the original, and while some say its too transparent that makes it ideal to sit between a mic pre and DAW input as a limiter to prevent clipping your inputs.

    AMAZING Video btw. 1 fun addition to consider for future videos, at the end include the whole mix and flip between the different mixes using each compressor across each track. Much like preamp demos, you really hear the bigger effect when you hear the entire mix with everything tracked and stacked up working together. One might have a nice mid-range clarity in solo, but cumulatively across the mix it could create an unwanted mid bump across the whole mix. Edit, after listening some more you can hear that the hairball has a bit more low mid push and different level of color/distortion, so I would love to hear hairball across all tracks vs the KT to see if the mix is more muddy or just adding subtle thickness.

    Fantastic comparison. Thank for you going through the barmy effort to put together such a video. All I can afford's the KT, but I'll say that you can bypass the compression on the KT by only lightly pressing one of the ratio buttons, switching them all off. The Rev H has a lovely attack on the snare.

    I ran my Softube VC76 through all the raw files then compared them to the other 1176's and to my surprise it really held its own sounding like the Rev D and hairball and silver face depending on how you set things. I was hoping to buy an 1176 clone but now I might just stick with the plugin

    • @MrPureBasic
      @MrPureBasic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's giving me some hope for plugins. The CLA76 and the Slate were really behind in this comparison. It's good to hear some developers are actually caring. :)

      People gush about UAD so much, but I feel like Softube is one of the best plugin DSP designers out there. I am uninformed and totally guessing, but I'm guessing Softube helps develop plugins for other companies as well since they have the resources and skills.

    Fantastic demo!
    The low end and over all loudness was quite less in the plugins, compared to the hardware. Is it possible to bring the sound and perceived loudness of the plugin sound equal to the hardware by adding in the low end, using analog eqs in the the mixing and mastering stage and saturation to increase the loudness of the instrument ?

    This is probably one of the best channels on TH-cam. Thank you many times over for doing this one. Without reading any comments first to avoid bias, here are my thoughts:
    The slate plugin sounded the worst in every comparison to my ears. It actually made material sound quieter when level matched against the dry signal. Yikes. All buttons is abysmal on it.
    The waves plugin was a bit better, but sadly not better than any hardware from any instrument pass for me. I used that plugin a lot and never super loved it, but I will likely use it less now.
    The rev H, D, urei reissue D all sounded wonderful and most similar in most tests. To me, one of these won out in every test.
    The hairball, purple, and klarks all took turns being the next best jn each test. For the money the Klark is very good. Especially in all buttons. I have 2 of them and have been using them a lot, but never got to properly do a comparison, so I was a bit nervous going jnto this. Feeling much better.
    Thanks again!

      Agree about the Slate - i'm sure I could hear it clipping on some tracks, and a nasty clip too.

  • @Cartastraccia_93
    @Cartastraccia_93 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    very very very nice comparison! i recently bought a kt 76 however i think is possible to bypass compression stage.
    To do this, i select a compression ratio and i "soft press" another ratio. In this way the original compression ratio kick out and the new isn't kicked in. I'm not a electronic engineer so i'm not sure, but i think you can bypass compression stage in this way. Normally i use this "trick" to overload input transformer and saturate sound.
    Anyway, nice video and channel man! Greetings from Italy

      Hi Andrea, thanks for watching! Since recording this, we found out how to bypass the compression, and you’re right, it’s done exactly like you explained. Maybe we’ll do a follow up some time!

    Completely agree on the silver face; where the drums really showed it up. I preferred the black face on the guitar section though, had a pleasing thickening, but rounding off of the treble. I quite liked the purple on the snare. It almost sounded like a breakbeat sampled at low bitrate off a crunchy master on dusty old vinyl.

    Man I love those Rev D's personally on pretty much everything. The Silverface is noisier, but has a super cool vibe that I also really dig on the snare. The Klark Teknik sounded surprisingly good considering the price. You could literally fill an entire rack with those for the cost of one of the originals.
