The WA76 is great for the price! I owned one until recently. For me I hear the biggest difference in the low end, and from experience, if you try to push it hard it has a bit less headroom than the more expensive units. Sometimes those are good things! I really liked it for making a bass guitar a bit grindy, for example! Personally, I think the UA reissues are a bit pricey for what they deliver, but the AudioScape units or a Hairball 1176 (especially if you build it yourself) are priced really fairly for very high quality "clones". I've got a handful of Hairball 1176s that I built myself in constant use here, both in 19" rack and 500 series format, alongside all my other compressors.

I’ve done my own shootout with an original vs Warm. On percussive sources the UA is so much better. The Warm doesn’t come close. On bass, the Warm is better than the UA, due to extra grit. Maybe I got a lack luster warm unit, I’m not sure. But I also listened to a friend’s mix a while back and I commented that the vocal sound was truly amazing, it turns out it was a WA76. If they improve the Warm on percussion sources in say a mkii version, I will most definitely buy four of them. Exciting company imo

The WA76, in addition to the WAEQP, is a workhorse in my home studio, as I track everything through it, including drum machines. I'll never be able to afford the UA1176, though it sounds slightly less aggresive to me than the WA76. Anyway, I love your channel; it's taught me so much!

Thanks, I enjoyed the video. I've been using the WA76 with Rupert Neve Pre and JZ67 or SM7b and getting good results on vocals and acoustic guitar. I haven't had the opportunity to compare with a UA 1176. I find recording with a touch of compression makes my job of mixing the tracks easier, especially for vocals. I'll often use the UA 1176 plugin on the mix as well.

Like every clone of the UA 1176 - they come pretty damn close BUT THERE IS ONE THING:
Those high compressed 8K/10K that You can hear for those "S" is just hard to copy for a cheaper units. That's just the hard true. The same with other vintage EQ/compressors.
Make it by 24/48 tracks and You've got a CLA'ish clarity for the start. Then mix it with tie same amount of this high top end equipment and it's twice cleaner than normal stuff/in the box.
Ofcourse those knock offs are way better for giving You an analogue feeling and puting track/tracks through the tubes but I just didn't hear any cheaper unit to mimique this high end compressed beautiful needle around 8/10K.
    Great video as always Warren!

I think the Warm Audio did a solid job, slightly different sound but that's what is great about hardware as you have more options available that you can pair with microphones for a more diverse sound. The 1176ln had more midrange articulation that suites the WA67 IMHO that slightly lacks compared to a U67. The more tools the better! Thanks for creating all the videos you make. They're informative.

the differences are neglible at safe recording levels, you have to start driving it into light saturation to start to hear it. the WA is actually a bit cleaner than the ones with the vintage transformers from the original production runs, but sometimes people like that 'distressor' type drive.

After another shootout I’ve realised what is wrong with the WA76. It’s the knee characteristics. If you graphed the knee of an original 1176 vs the WA76 they would look wildly different. The WA76 is a very hard knee. It’s almost a brick wall effect. It’s one of the reason s the WA76 doesn’t change its frequency response with compression amounts. in my opinion it’s terrible. If UA came across one of their units sounding like the WA, they would throw it in the bin. It’s not an 1176 despite its appearance and I have no idea how R&D could approve this design. Happy to discuss. Get an audioscape if you want a true 1176

Hm...to me the 1176 is a little cleaner. Listen 11:00 the arpegio sounds pretty clean, no background noise. The WA then sounds a bit more harsh and there is a little sparkle noise in background. Great shootout! I came to this video from the Produce Like A Pro email that was sent. I was wondering why the email referred to the 1176 by "the infamous Universal Audio 1176LN Classic limiting Amplifier". Infamous essentially means famous for a bad reason. Maybe they meant the classic, famous, popular, well known, legendary or industry standard 1176? I think so. Maybe just a misusage of the word. In either case, it got me here! 🙂 Great video! Warm sounds OK - BUT their quality control and component tolerance is awful, in my experience.
Have had a couple of these die, meter ballistics quite non-1176-ish and meter often needing recalibration, PSU hum.
Never again, for me (even though I see they already gearing up on YT to try and combat the pretty huge blow Behringer is currently delivering them).
    🤷🏼‍♂️

You can't tell any difference here because TH-cam audio, laptop audio and the cheap headphones I have mask the subtleties.

Dear Juno Hasson. You have a wonderful capable voice. But if you listen to a good song like how Frank Sinatra delivers, it's about delivering the text/lyric first. It is only then that you maybe have one opening in a song to show people your voice is THAT capable.
Please try the song a half step down. That would force you to stay in the midrange of your voice. My guess is that the song would have much more reach.
All the best. I love your music and voice.
Believe me. There aren't THAT many people with a voice as beautiful as yours. There just aren't.

You do realise there are people doing professional audio for a long time that have trained their hearing to so much subtleties...they are also listening for different things than the average man.

    • @theCarouselPainter
      @theCarouselPainter 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I agree, even well trained "professionals" would have no fucking clue what is what if you were to do a full blind test, black screen, no video and no subtitles.., Actually Most of the time when they do these, they are the 1st ones to screw it up.. So yes there's a difference, but lost in a mix, no one listening in their car would say "huh this has been compressed with Warm Audio duhh", again people listen with their eyes.
