Kiive audio (with plugin alliance) also made xtcompressor which is a distressor clone and it’s really good too. Also features a saturation knob/mix control, and the Brit mode found on the el8-x model.
I shot this out against the Xtressor, MIKE E and the Arouser, UAD beat them It just sounds warmer and more detailed, they seem to care more about the Plugins, actually sounding good, instead of ....trying to get it exactly like the hardware, because only heardware can be the be hardware.....LOL...unless Acustica makes a live analog sampled one, this is the best right now
@@johnisrael5183 i felt the UAD and xtressor captured different parts of the distressor. i will agree that the UAD sounds closer (having owned one in the past), BUT the xtressor has some more features that could be useful (oversampling, the brit mode, the ability to dial in saturation). so sometimes i'm willing to sacrifice a bit of the exacting of the distressor for added features (also why i like and use the arouser).
I love this breakdown. Can you do this on the other UAD plugins as well like the API 2500? Also, I can't get the Capitol Mastering Compressor to sound right, maybe there's a specific way to use it.
Thanks for this. I actually grabbed this plugin on a special deal ($25) but haven’t really used it much. I should have read the manual but your video is just the walkthrough I needed to explain all the features. Will test it for aliasing and then try it out on some stuff going forward. Thanks again.
Merci pour les explications sur le Distressor! Je viens d’acheter le plugin de UA après l’avoir voulu pendant plusieurs années. Pis là j’ai jamais entendu du NYC compression aussi clean
Chris, I really enjoyed this video and found it really helpful, so , thank you very much. To add, this has made a few pennies drop, if you know the saying and i am sending you my Gratitude for that. A-Mazin! 🎨
Thanks Chris! I have one of those 38,000 analog Distressor units on my rack lol. This showcase of the UAD is awesome and I love seeing plugin emulations of the hardware unit. I've got the Kiive Audio Xtressor as well but haven't gotten the chance to put the two side-by-side as of yet!
I just bought a hardware distressor recently, cool timing! Idk why I waited so long on that unit, its pretty ubiquitous. I must say it sounds wayyy better than I thought it would. Im not a fan of the UAD emulation, if I had to pick one that gets closest its the softube Mike E. It lacks a little of the low mid push and color but perhaps that makes it better suited to some material
Great video! I thought the UAD Distressor was a bit too CPU heavy, and the Kiive Audio didn't really do it for me (and what the hell is up with their preset system!?) My favourite Distressor, and indeed my favourite compressor in general, is the Purafied Audio LEDcomp. For the sound I'm going for, it won in a blind shootout against the UAD, IK Multimedia, Slate, Kiive, and Tukan. It's pretty much always the first thing on all my channels when mixing because the saturation is so versatile, and in stead of the HPF/mid bump in the detector circuit (although it does have the sidechain HPF), it has active high and low shelf eq's that you can set to pre or post compression. The low shelf even has a bit of a Pultec curve!
Purified doesn't have the sidechain bump, that is a must with a distressor. The Comprexxor has a variable sidechain bump which is much more useful than the original, one of the reasons why the IK distressor is my go to.
You have a great channel here. I was gonna buy some mixdown instructional stuff, but I guess it's more Cubase centered. I am on Studio One at the present moment. I did sign up for the workshop though...
I have an old video on the Cubase Vintage Comp, but I might make a new one th-cam.com/video/YLxxozliWw4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6Ilr5J4AffHPbV9P Thanks for watching!
Chris my brother fan of your content when you can I highly suggest to use the arouser trust me you will be happy.I replaced distressor almost 10 years ago
Cool! ;-)
link subtle? maybe on acoustic drums yes, but on techno kicks it does make quite the difference! either way, super tutorial once again! i love my uad variant and basicaly smack it almost on every track :)
Works pretty well on almost everything. I'll add Bass Guitar, and works great on acoustic guitars as well. For vocals, yes the Opto mode, but also in the regular mode, no problem.
I think the HR button acts as a sort of fixed values threshold...Could it be? Another question: do the attack and release parameters automatically work "in reverse" like the 1176 only when opto mode is activated?
I enjoy your videos but was taking a close listen to this one. The slight background music is at best distracting. Can you remove it in future for any mid parts of the video where you are talking about changes then critical listening then back to your vox.
The Arousor is great, but is not an exact emulation of the Distressor by UAD, which was emulated in collaboration with Empirical Labs. I actually mention the Arousor in this video ;-)
they are totaly worth it. i have 3, one for the bass guitar, and the other tow for parallel compression for drums. if you want a plugin for this, check out the arousor, it is way better then the UAD version... I tried all versions, and compared to the hardware. The hardware won every round :D but the arousor was most of the times on second place. it sounds, compared with the uad distressor, more open, and punchy, and the distortion is closer to the hardware.
@@kristianmarschewski1590 Yeah not sure why arousor wasn't the comparison here. I think the Arousor sounds more modern for the reasons you described, and for my songs that actually makes it a plus. But if you wanted to use live drums in an older style record distressor is still king.
This video series is about Classic gear plugin emulation, that's why I chose the UAD version, which is an exact emulation of the Distressor made by UAD in collaboration with Empirical Labs. The Arousor is awesome, but is not a fully emulation, it's based on the Distressor, and like I mention in this video, it has more advanced features compared to the Distressor. You can't go wrong with the Arousor.
I had a couple of Distressors at some point, and the owner decided to sell them, and I didn't buy them...I still regret it, cause they're also amazing compressors to record with.
Delighted UAD made these plugins native. The distressor is otherworldly. Thanks Chris for your insight
You're welcome!

Dammit Chris! I was finally done with this mix, and then you had to go and show this.
Sorry mate LOL!
You have some wonderful breakdowns of things I think I’ve jumped in and used, without really trialling exactly what they are capable of. Thank you!
Great video, as usual. Thanks dude.
This video helped immediately!

The Capitol Mastering plugin sounds better with quiet mixes. It's really heavy handed if your mixes are louder.
@@Crowbar11115 I noticed this too. It sounds like it can only be used subtly and can sound not so good when pushed.
Never tried the Capitol Mastering Compressor, but I'll add the API2500 to my list, thanks!

Thanks billions Chris for taking us thru such a informative tour on This-Stressor 😁.. A drummer himself is the best man to do this indeed...👍👊👊🍻
this video was surprisingly well produced and contained quality information!
Thanks :-)
I like the Dis-Treasure by Tukan Studios for Reaper. Sounds so good on drums.

At 2:10 minutes, I think that the fastast attack time is always with the lower ration since it takes less time to reach the total lowering amout.

I'd be interested in a demo of The Fatso plugin. I wish UAD made a native version of this. I'd love to try it out.

Does this plug in work as a VST plug in with apps like Adobe Audition?
I'm using the UAD Native VST3 version, so it should work with Audition
