  • I've travelled to many countries, almost all the ones I ever wanted to visit, and have spent lots time in South East Asia. But you get to the stage when you think, 'Been there, done' that. It's hard to keep up enthusiasm for travel after so many years. What are your thoughts?

I’am 10 years older and agree on all the points you make, when I was 60. But yes we can’t predict the future, where do you see yourself in 10 years time?. Been living in Thailand for over 3 years and love it, mainly for the lifestyle and a loving Thai lady for company. I still travel, Bangkok airport is only 143baht bus ride away. Many countries are only a few hours away on very cheap flights, I’ve been to Philippines, Bali, Laos, Nepal, India and even Greece and Turkey on the way back from visiting family in the U.K. Yes that’s an expensive flight but only once a year or so. Hoping to continue this lifestyle for as long as my health holds up 😊

Accommodation, food, travel etc. even beer hasn’t gone up much since I first started visiting in 2005. The only thing that has gone up greatly is the
price of female company, noting else - still great value, especially condo rental prices.

Basically agree with you Eddy. I am Australian, 67 years old and been a travelholic since I was 18. Europe is expensive for me these days and I am sick of cobblestone streets and cathedrals, I travelled frequently to the USA in the 70s, 80s and 90s but went to visit a friend in Seattle in 2019 and that country is so different and depressing now. Mexico, Central America and South America are interesting and fun and I could maybe go back again but it is more of a young mans destination I think. I couldn't climb to the top of Macchu Pinchu or a Mayan temple in the jumgle now. One visit to Africa was enough and the Middle East does not appeal to me. And as you say airlines are just not fun anymore with all the security now. I have tried to tell 30 year olds what it used to be like to fly back before it was introduced and how you would just walk onto a plane but they just do not get it or understand. I got back from Thailand a fortnight ago and think I will either move up there or Cambodia for at least a year. Australia is still okay and nice but I just sit home nearly every night and am becoming a vegetable, So right now I am in the process of getting rid of all my stuff (Junk) , will rent my house and relocate. If it does not work I can always come back.

Seattle isn't really representative of the entire US. Maybe focus on a different part of the country. I've explore the middle east just a little at places like Doha and Dubai and Istanbul. I find them interesting but I get why they may not be everyone's cup of tea. I view them more as a one off type of thing. I am a bit disappointed about your comment concerning Africa. It is a continent that I have no experience with and I was hoping that it would be a region that might reinvigorate my passion for travel.

I’m currently in Thailand 🇹🇭. It’s getting expensive in some places in Thailand and I think food prices have gone up and quality/quantity has gone down. Koh Samui it’s like 400-600 Baht for a taxi to go anywhere on the island. Most places I think want 200+ Baht for Thai dishes. If you want a nice piece of steak or something European. You looking at 1000 Baht plus. I find transportation costs in first world countries to be cheaper than Thailand. For example in Gold Coast Australia, you could travel as much as you want on public transport for only $10 AUD. Which is way cheaper than Thailand. Flights are getting expensive. Hotels trying to charge you more. I thing I’m putting travel on hold for this. Thailand is no longer great value for your money.

"Spending a lot of money" is relative. Speaking from a US perspective, some places in Asia are considerably cheaper than the USA. The other issue is upon arriving in a location such as Thailand, what is the lifestyle you want to live. I don't drink, smoke, or go to bars to chase women (or men!!). Quoting a vlogger, "Love the land first, then find the girl."
Many people complain about rising prices in Thailand and other popular expat locations. I chuckle when I hear that. What do they expect? As a place grows in popularity, others will follow. As demand exceeds supply, prices will rise, which is pretty much basic economic theory. The question is whether the desired retirement location is affordable based on the lifestyle you care to lead. What cities are you living in, i.e., Pattaya vs. Bangkok or Hua Hin vs. Chaing Mai?
These are issues that people face in their home countries. Similarly, one should expect prices to change abroad as well.

I agree flight prices have almost doubled but Thailand is still cheap. If u are like me who likes most thai food which is delicious, dirt cheap and stay away from the western food and your english breakfasts. I drink out which is also cheap but i dont buy lady drinks every night maybe once a week but there are bars that are quiet and cheap without all that and if u want to travel around thailand whether it be by boat to an island for €1 or €2 or the thai state railway for €2 or €4 for long journeys. Thailand is still cheap, but u wanna acclimatise to the food, learn about it, try it there is lots. Accommodation is still cheap. But if u wanna stay in 4 star hotels , drink in girly bars most nights, paying for lady drinks , 😢 and paying a lady for her services , well then that will be expensive so basically thailand has got more expensive for the Monger.
And even more expensive for the 2 week millionaire Monger !

Personally I've grown a bit tired of Thailand, but for different reasons than you've mentioned (mostly). I think that Thailand can be a very cheap holiday destination if you want it to be. Hotels- 500-600 baht per day, food- 50-100 baht per meal, drinks- 50 baht beers from 7-11 or 55-70 baht from cheap beer bars. If you wanted to budget, you could easily holiday in Thailand for 1500-2500 baht per day depending on what you were doing on the day. I agree with you regarding the people. I speak Thai (almost) fluently and I regularly meet Thais in many of the touristy areas that are rude to me for no reason, whereas outside of the touristy areas they are almost never rude. The bar girl scene is fairly dire compared with 10 years ago IMO, and many of the pretty girls now ply their trade online. Thailand is still a great holiday destination IMO- just less so than in the past.

Yes agreed, I also speak Thai and I'm pretty sick of the attitude of many of the Thais in the tourist areas. The rudeness and lack of basic human mutual respect is saddening. In normal areas they're great typically. It's a cool country ofc, but many hardened thais in the tourist places.

It's true, travel has changed radically. Pre pandemic I did r/t to LOS for $700, now the quotes are $1700 and more. Personally I think it''s mostly down to greed. The business model now seems to be price HIGH, less work. Specifically Thailand seems to be throwing in with other destinations and doing the same. They seem to think they can jack up prices, knock down the character I always liked and put up NEW luxury malls and condos and upgrade hotels and restaurants to that higher priced level. It's beyond belief they think they can become like Singapore or Hong Kong and get the 60 million tourists I've seen quoted (the airport expansion is daft). At this point the cost of staying in LOS has killed the allure for enough travelers that the airlines have no reason to add flights and bring down prices. As you said the girls now are plump, averaget lookers, the prices are too high and in general the street food places that used to be SO delicious and cheap have been pushed off the street into mall "street food" courts.

As a guy who believes it's the journey rather than the destination that makes a good trip I have become claustrophobic on aeroplanes and regretfully have stopped air travel. The whole palaver around airports and ever tighter seat and knee length dimensions is a real bummer and is now a no-go area for me. Just not worth the hassle. I have rediscovered the fun and convenience of closer to home and don't feel I am missing out on anything.

I had a look at the flights for a two month trip for July and August and no way am I paying over £1000 for an economy flight there, epecially since fuel prices are getting close to pre-covid prices - airlines are taking the mick. Turkey is a great option at the mo - crap economy, only 4 hours away, easy to travel on trains and busses and plenty to see and do, but last year, I had a month bouncing around Greece for the first time and that was really fun. Loads of islands, excellent ferries everywhere, only a few hours on the plane, you only need to book one way and can come back from a dozen airports when you're ready. I remember you said about South America - Argentina and Columbia are also being investigated ..... :-)

Loads of mates there still but the money i spent was ridiculous. I dont think its travel worn as much for me per se but for example I always wanted to go Switzerland but was always too expensive. I went a few years back and tt was stunning, unreal and at this point id rather spend it on something new even if its a few weeks rather than save all year to piss it away in overly expensive girly bars. the main reason older gentlemen find thailand expensive is places like pattaya and patong have been over run by indians and russians. this has put the prices up the rough not just the girls everything else that comes with it.

I meant to add that it is not fair to say that things have gone up since covid because it seems to be the bar owners that have some blame saying that the price of beer has gone up, well they should look for alternative suppliers as I find that in7/11 and my local Thai family shops that the price I am paying is the same as before covid so there is no increases there. Also the street food is still the same although it seems to have risen in the mall food courts but only by 10 satang per meal choice but you do get big portions, at least in Robinsons.

I'm married to a Filipina back in England and we're over here in the Philippines at the moment.
It's even slightly more expensive to get over here than to Thailand, but the cost of enjoying your holiday here is much more reasonable than Thailand, Malaysia and definitely Singapore.
English is pretty widely spoken and you have hundreds of beautiful Islands to choose from.
Traveling between the Islands can be quite a challenging experience, but if you do some simple research and bring a decent current travel guide, travelling between the islands can be quite an enjoyable and "different" experience.

Flights are not as cheap as before (Pre-Covid). But sometimes you get lucky with specials especially with budget airlines, so it’s not too bad. Accomodation is pretty cheap in Thailand. Food and drinks can be perceived as “expensive” or same price as in Europe, Australia or USA if you want to eat European food like Beef Steak etc. or go to more upper class bars where alcohol is more expensive like Roof Top bars in Bangkok. If you stick to Thai food you can still find something for 80-100 Thai Baht per dish. Ladies are expensive everywhere, not just Thailand.

I am in my early 40’s now and Can no longer enjoy Pattaya for more than a few days. It makes me a little sad that I am unable to recreate the magic of those early trips to Pattaya (first trip 2009). I think it is a combination of too many trips, change in the attitude of locals and it becoming more expensive. Koh Samui was ideal for me to recharge my batteries and enjoyed doing a couple of day trips. I think this is more the type of travel I will be doing going forwards
