    Hay Rob, I have been told by an old mate that lived in Bangkok for many years that:
    1. you should never point at something with your foot. (your feet are considered dirty, and it is insulting)
    2. never directly point your finger at someone. (Can be construed as accusatory)
    3. beckon someone to come to you with your hand palm down (it is a gentle, respectful way of gesturing someone to come to you)

    I was at Phrom Phong BTS where an American guy was leaning on the barrier beyond the yellow line. Thai security guy on the platform was blowing his whistle to tell him not to lean on the barrier and get behind the yellow line. When I explained to the American guy he needed to get behind the line and not lean in the barrier, he just said to me the Thai security guy should learn English. I just said mate you are in Thailand not the US .

    No1 for taxi from most people I watched is asked them to turn the meter on. No meter don’t get in. Don’t waste your time negotiating.
    Tuk tuk is just a tourist ride. So basically you are negotiating for a price before you get on.
    Your video was helpful and is actually common sense.
    The money on floor was useful.
    Also I heard they do play their national anthem on two times of the day and they stand, you just play along and stand and be respectful.
    As stated you are in other people country. Respect their law and rules.

      Personally, even here in Phuket I think it looks stupid when people walk or ride around with no shirts on. And the worst part is that these idiots seem to think it’s also perfectly acceptable to go into restaurants to eat with no shirt on. I see this every single day here and it really bothers me. And one of the reasons it bothers me is because its just very disrespectful to the Thai people. The other reason it bothers me is that it is not always just the fit young guys who are doing this. Sometimes its really, really old guys with horribly wrinkled and saggy leathery skin doing it and this quite frankly puts me off my appetite. It just not the kind of thing you want to see while sitting down to enjoy a nice meal.

    Ten years ago, I was in the Chiang Mai airport complaining about a change fee with a young lady at Scoot Airlines. I realized I had raised my voiced based on the lady’s facial expressions. I gave up and walked away. A moment later, shame over came me and tears flooded my eyes. I walked backed and apologized tears and all. I can only hope she’s shared with other Thais how a rude westerner apologized for his rudeness. That experience changed my life. I learned it’s my responsibility to assimilate into another county’s culture and customs 😢😢😢

    The overplanning was my biggest mistake I booked a hotel for two weeks in Bangkok, met some backpackers who wanted to go to Phuket, ended up checking out early, had paid for two weeks but only stayed five days total waste of money.
    So now I will only book for a short time because accomodation is easy to find in Thailand and it makes you more flexible to just go somewhere else if you feel like it.

    I had underestimated the repugnant nature of shoes / feet to Thai people.
    Funnily enough, upon arriving home this week to my carpeted condo, I immediately took my shoes off at the entryway. Unheard of previously

    • @ProjectBangkok

      Haha same for me bro! Zero F’s given back in the UK.. but here it’s shoes off at the door each and every time now

    • @SLOBeachboy
      @SLOBeachboy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have not worn shoes in my home for nearly 45 year now and this is partly due to the fact that I have lived in a lot of places where they are fanatical about not wearing shoes indoors, such as Japan, Hawaii, and Thailand. But the truth is I first decided to not wear shoes in the house back when I was still a teenager in California. Back then pretty much all houses had shag carpeting and I quickly realized that the main reason the carpeting would get so dirty and matted down in high traffic areas was because shoes would bring in the dirt from outside and really grind it into the carpet. And since we all tended to spend a lot of time laying around on the carpeted floors I did not want it to be so disgusting. The other advantage is that without shoes you can put your feet up on the furniture without having to worry about getting it dirty. Of course, since the 90’s virtually nobody has wall to wall carpeting in the USA anymore but wearing shoes indoors is also very bad for your wood or tile flooring and for your throw rugs. It just makes no sense to wear shoes in your home even if you can afford to replace the flooring every few years. Of course, in Japan they are almost too fanatical about the no shoes thing. For example, if you ever visit someone living in one of those old traditional style homes in Japan you will have to remove your shoes when you enter the house and change into slippers to walk through the wood floor hallways to the tatami rooms. Then before entering the tatami rooms you will have to take off the slippers and leave them in the hallway. Then if you need to go to the toilet you will have to change back into your slippers to walk down the hallway to the bathroom and then change out of those and into bathroom slippers before entering the bathroom. Its really a pain in the ass.

    Thailand has some really strange laws too.
    It's illegal to:
    Drive shirtless/topless.
    Leave your home wearing no underwear(No commando)...And do they check?
    To own more than 120 playing cards.
    To speak into a microphone in a foreign language(Other than Thai)
    To fly or wave a flag other than the thai flag in public(Only embassies allowed).
    To drink alcohol in public parks,gas stations,(and of course,temples hospitals and educational facilities).
    And the one that gets me is: You can't buy booze from2pm to 5pm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • @conormcevoy7510
      @conormcevoy7510 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      My understanding of the 2-5pm non sale of liquor is it coincides with heavy school traffic, it reduces the opportunity for alcoholics to drink and drive. And also reduces the ability of school kids to buy alcohol when their parents are not around. It makes sense, most of the laws do when you put yourself in a Thai persons shoes.

    The main thing you should never do in Bangkok is take motorbike taxi. Yes they are convenient and can cut through bad traffic quickly but they are mostly driven by reckless young men on bikes with broken lights and bald tires. And if you take one without a helmet that's just madness. Please don't break your head in Bangkok.

    American, With family in the UK…We drive..Walk…Go for a run shirtless as men and in a sport bra as women, and no one thinks anything of it in any city of all 50 states. Day out in Cambridge and took my shirt off and my cousins nearly lost it I couldn’t wrap my mind around why people would care what I was wearing so I put it right back on but I thought that was the most strange thing about my entire time in the UK, I’m all about respecting customs, That one was just I think being American and never having thought about it. Planning for Thailand soon knowing it’s hot I actually had plans to go about shirtless. Very glad I’ve stopped to think out things I might need to expect. Now I’m curious as to weather or not I can even Go to the beach shirtless..

    Some Thai people simply don't like farangs. If a shop keeper turns their back when you speak, just realize they are not selling to farangs, and say "thank you" then walk away. It's very rare, but it has happened to me on several visits. Onward
