Traditionally the shepherd's didn't used to feed LGDs a lot of high quality feed. They used to eat what their owners used to eat, stuff like bread, meat, milk and milk products. Shorter lifespan and health issues like hip dysplasia that trouble livestock guardian dogs are mainly caused by high protein dog food.

My sheep produce a lot of compost which produces a lot of squash. Dogs love cooked squash so it's a great system for me. But, yeah, that's a lot of food.

We have a great pyr and he is awesome. He has gone through 2 obedience classes and passed with flying colors. We adopted him from a shelter at 10 weeks. He is just a house pet but so awesome and happy- loves kids and people. At night he watches out the patio doors as he is protecting his “herd”. Thinking about enrolling him into good citizen training so he can visit nursing homes and hospitals. Rocky is now 3 1/2 - so spoiled- 90lbs of lap dog

Pryanees are smart. I always said they were smart enough to cheat most people at cards and the only reason they didn't take over the world was the lack of opposable thumbs. That said, pyrs learn very quickly but quickly get bored with commands they don't see a point to. A frequent comment on the GP Mail List was, "Welcome to the wonderful world of pyrs and their painted-on ears!"

my grandfathers' farm in the Caucuses has about 10-12 dogs (of various ages) and about 1,000 sheep. they have wolf packs there and they are alone with sheep for days at a time. I've never seen solo dogs with sheep, no matter how few... not sure if this changes if you have coyotes, since they are considerably smaller and a true sheep dog like the Pyrenees or Caucasian shepherd can easily take a few by itself...

    • @dennisfossey4312

      Michelle Dean
It depends on the NUMBER of Predators,.. As much as the number of livestock. Coyotes may be small. But DO Often travel in numbers like Wolves. And are Very Oprotunistic like wolves. So while one dog is doing his thing. It's always best to have others watching the back door so to speak. The more doors, the more Dogs... Simple as I can put it ☺

I actually witnessed my Pyrs take on a cougar that jumped my pasture fence after my sheep. I had 8 pyrs at that time. 2 of them were young juveniles. Both of the juveniles split off the "pack", and pushed the sheep up against the fence and held them there. The adult Pyrs (6 of them) attacked the cougar. I was on the deck watching all of this. The cougar was taken down by the Pyrs. He jumped up and jumped the fence and disappeared into the woods. Im in a dead run to the dogs to check for injuries. I found blood on 2 of them. It was not theirs.
If you decide a Pyr is for you, do your homework on the breed first. And plan on getting more than one. Some situations require backup!

Pyrs have double dewclaws on the rear feet. Kuvas do not. Both are good livestock guardians. Pyrs are bigger and have a broader muzzle, especially when comparing males to males, or females to females.

Nos, szóval megnéztem újból a videó elejét. Most úgy tűnik a kutyáknak egyenes a szőre. A kuvasz léte maga a történelem.

This is just my opinion,i come from Albania and in the mountains we own herds of cows, goats and sheep.Coyotes is nothing compared to bears, wolves, eagles(which attack lambs). We use the Caucasian shepherd and we only have one per 30-50 sheep. The dogs you own are practicly soft versions of Caucasian shepherds, and our herd/guard dogs , sleep eat and live with our sheep all times. So I kinda think its not that bad to be employin 15 dogs against coyotes.

And our lines go back some 10,000 years. And though we are called Pyrenean Mountain dogs in Europe. We are a Primary use for getting rid of Bears there. The reason for High Numbers of Pyrenees in the situation of this video. Is because Coyotes can be in Large Numbers. And are Very Oprotunistic animals. So we have Many Corners to cover ☺☺☺.

They are meant to Warn, Torment, and give predators the same decisions.
Avoid excessive energy expense, and possibly injury. Which would limit Their abilities to hunt further and survive.

just a foot note on maremma's. They will guard THEIR flock with their lives, but, what breeders won't tell you is that they will kill your neighbours sheep. It doesn't matter how well you feed 'em,they will still attack your neighbours sheep. I have personally known people this has happened to. I live in a dingo area & it's a constant battle to keep sheep alive. A vet once stated to guard the flock use something that DOESN'T eat meat. If you live next to a maremma you'll understand that vet's meaning.

This is the true form/work of a flock guarding dog--to intimidate and scare off hungry animals with their loud bark, size, and numbers. People think that these dogs are bred to take on and battle other animals, but a combat dog like an American Pitbull and a flock guardian are two completely different things. One thing people need to understand is that dogs like these are guard dogs and not warriors for combat. People think that just because they see sort videos of these dogs either chasing or attack attacking a smaller wolf that is not even really fighting back and doesn't show the entire thing from beginning to end means they are the greatest, strongest, and toughest breed. That is not true. There's a reason kangals are not used to take on larger animals like bulls or bears and are not popular or widely known for the sport of dog combat unable to battle as long or as intensely as American Pitbulls can. I have seen video of American Pitbulls beating kangals and even making them run away. Never underestimate a dog that was bred to take on bulls, bears, and wild boar like the American Pitbull is. To see what American Pitbulls can do, watch a video called *Pit Bull Vs Bull in Maxela* where an American Pitbull takes on a bull by itself. For more info on the American Pitbull breed that even talks about how they were used to take on lions, watch a video interview with a well-know expert called *ALL ABOUT THE AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER WITH RICHARD F. STRATTON*

Guy Says seriously?? This is a video about LGD'S not about how wonderful an American Pitbull is. I usually don't comment negatively but right now I'm having a hard time swallowing your comment since my 6 yr. daughter's 6 yr old best friend is in the hospital for being mauled by the neighbors sweet, little, misunderstood Pitty.
If I hear one more Pit Nutter say "It's all in the way you raise them" I'm going to vomit.
Yes we are fully aware they are combative and will attack bulls, horses, livestock, cats, children, elderly people etc.
And it's people like you who obviously get off on watching these dogs fight other animals that has helped to promote the destruction and corruption of the once very good breed of the American Staffordshire Terrier. I know I will probably be attacked by many Pit Nutters out there so don't bother.

Guy Says , I see the point you are making but my understanding of the Great pyrenees primary job is simply to keep predators away. They are not intimated by wolves, bears or coyotes, that is how they were bred. To run danger off and get back to their charges. It is rather like comparing apples and oranges. The rancher down the road has several great pyrenees. He has not lost any of his animals. I much admire this giant, gentle and dedicated breed.
