This, this is one of the biggest things wrong with how things are taught these days. People are punished for making mistakes so heavily, and it's inferred if not outright said that making a mistake means a person is a failure. When instead it should be taught that mistakes are some of the best ways to learn. Realizing what went wrong, and understanding how it happened and then devising a better way, that's what really helps people move forward.

Experienced dog person (but not of Maremmas) here. I also suspect this is a case of a puppy trying to play too rough with the chicken, but of course we can't know for sure since I presume there was no video running at the time it happened. Blanche's body looked like it was in fairly good shape, even if she had some wounds it might have been done after she was already down. Or, did this happen during daylight? I was part of a chicken co-op and we started having some issues that were later discovered to be a predator problem. Red-tailed hawks don't care about electric fences! Just some thoughts.

But since that was not the case, the upside is that if she didnt eat this one, she will never associate the birds as food.

    • @FoundedScreenLady
      @FoundedScreenLady 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

It depends really, some dogs are known to grab and thrash smaller animals purely on instinct- even if they are the most behaved dogs. (This is why dog parks and such separate big and small dogs into separate areas.)
Sometimes, instinct just kicks in and tells them to bite. It was obviously an accident and the puppy probably didn't understand what she was doing with her being so young still, it's something that you gotta train out of them.
Either way it's a good lesson to both parties, for one to be stricter with the animals free-roaming at night, and for the other to not bite the other animals it is living amongst.

Just a theory, but a scenario I can easily picture due to my experience with dogs is this:
It's highly likely that as you mentioned Blanche was mischievously hiding away, when Abby came across her unsupervised. Blanche probably tried to dart and that set Abby's prey drive off cuz she's still so young. Toby then likely heard the struggle and intervened which is why you found poor Blanche still alive but in rough shape, "play-time" was interrupted. This would explain why Abby was acting guilty towards Toby outside the dog-pen, and Toby seemed on edge with her. Given how good Toby is at his job, I find it hard to believe that if he knew what was happening that he wouldn't correct it, poor guy just didn't make it in time. My condolences for Blanche, she was a good chicken.

This video has actually been very healing for me. When I was 16, my friend’s stepdad got a livestock guardian dog for his goats and sheep and forbid us from petting it or treating it like a pet because he wanted it to be closer to the goats. Unfortunately, while she was still a pup (under a year) she bit a goat badly. I wanted to take her on as a pet, but the stepdad just took her out to the field and shot her because in her mind, she wasn’t useful or trusted anymore.

Morgan, don’t bet yourself up too much about this. Everyone makes mistakes when they are raising puppies, no matter how experienced you are with raising puppies. This is a hard lessen to learn, but you will never make this mistake again. And this doesn’t mean that Abby is a bad dog either. Raising a puppy is a learning process for both the owner and the dog. The bad thing now is that the puppy will now obtain the new killer instinct. His puppy will now need more tougher supervision and tons of remedial training more than ever to ensure that no more killer occurs. Even if the puppy thinks it is playing with the farm animals; it may accidentally kill more animals later on when it grows older.

I trained plenty of dogs before and once a dog taste blood; they will want to go back for more even with all the correction/training you do to them. Your dog may not kill a small bird in front of you due to fearing or respecting you; but the moment you let them roam around freely then they will resort to whatever makes them feel good. That is to including killing or attacking other animals. The true gospel is the good news that God saves sinners. Man is by nature sinful and separated from God with no hope of remedying that situation. But God, by His power, provided the means of man’s redemption in the death, burial, and resurrection of the Savior, Jesus Christ.
      Ephesians 2:8-9

Release her with the command " yes " while being happy and entuziast and LET HER come to you and search for the treat. Trust me, it makes a big difference. If you reach your hand into her nose, she's like " blah, blah. I'll just sit and he will give me the treat anyway". You gotta let her come to you and search the reward. Also, it's very important to switch hands more often. Try this and u'll see some more progress. Btw, i have 2 malinois. Have a good one!:)

You did free her from misery. We have and had similar cases with exotics, where the injury was simply too great and reasonable recovery simply isn't an option. We put them down. We have to. Feeling guilt is part of the process and part of our being. But also being professional and not emotional serves the animals.
Making mistakes is part of the journey, as a senior keeper said: if you don't make mistakes, that means you don't work. You work. We work. Therefore mistakes. Big or small. WILL happen, question is, can we go on or anchor down and beat ourselves or learn from it.

I'm so sorry that this happened. As a trainer, I know setbacks can happen, and it can be hard, especially knowing it's ultimately our responsibility to do all that we can to guide surrounding events to best promote the success of our dogs. Perhaps a personal anecdote could be helpful here.
My service dog is a retired greyhound racer. She came to me with insanely high prey drive - one of the highest levels of prey drive I've seen in a dog. If she had gotten the chance early on, she absolutely would have killed any small furry she had access to, especially outdoors. Thankfully, she never got that chance - but accidents can happen to anyone. My bigger point is, through consistent training, my dog learned to have completely solid recall. She learned to ignore small furries - and even to look to me for a reward any time she sees them, rather than follow her earlier impulse to give chase. She used to chase anything small that moved - living or not. But, to give just a few examples of how far she has come: one day a rabbit fled from a bush mere feet in front of us, where we hadn't known it was hiding. My dog tensed, then immediately looked to me for a reward. She didn't give chase. Another day, while walking in Walmart, an annoying man refused to quit following and pestering us, and at one point walked ahead of us and into a toy aisle. As we passed the aisle, he suddenly rolled a ball across the floor at high speed *right* in front of my dog. She didn't pay it any heed at all (the jerk, on the other hand, got a well deserved telling off).
If a high prey drive dog like mine can learn to ignore inappropriate "prey," a dog like Abby can absolutely learn. She doesn't seem to have much prey drive at all from the videos I've seen. This incident seems more like a correlation of all the wrong things happening at the wrong time, and perhaps a "play session" between her and the chicken gone wrong. She'll learn. I have no doubt of that.
I would however caution you against reading too much into her body language. I doubt she was actually "feeling guilty" in the video, as you said. The event is too far in the past for that. I also doubt Toby was still "upset" with her. What's more likely is that both dogs are picking up on your feelings. Both can feel that you're a bit shocked/upset with Abby, and both are responding accordingly. While your emotions are completely understandable (I would feel the same!), perhaps schedule in some extra fun playtime with Abby over the next few days to help you move past all of this. Maybe train her to do something new - just for fun, not even for the job - just to restore your confidence both in her and in yourself as her trainer. You seem to have done an amazing job training Toby, as well as gaining Abby's trust early on. I have no doubt whatsoever you'll all get past this, and Abby will turn into just as great an asset as Toby dog, both to your farm and your life.
Chin up, my man. You've got this.

I feel we can sometimes stretch it a second or so by constantly repeating the behavior whole we get a treat out and repeating "good leave it". But that is it. Hours after it happened neither of them will associate the chicken with your disappointment. But on the whe I think you do a great job training

Same here. My Akbash puppy (LGD), has caught and “plucked” the poor chickens. We don’t allow her around them unless we are with her but once or twice the chickens went into her kennel and once he got loose and we found them later. He doesn’t draw blood or tear the bird apart so I am really hoping he thinks it’s playing and will outgrow it. they say many LGD don’t mature and take their jobs seriously until they are about two years old. I’m really hoping this is the case.

We are on the same path with training an LGD. Our Great Pyrenees is 8 months old. She does amazingly well about 90% of the time but even just this morning, after our parameter walk- she immediately took off “wildly” chasing one of our roosters, after months of daily and consistent training. It’s a bit discouraging but reminds us not to be too relaxed with her amongst the flock. She’s still a puppy and we have to continue to work with her daily, correcting her and watching her closely.

As a person who doesn't farm but instead grows plants, i have to disagree, while it may be logical and efficient in a pure survival scenario, it is important you have boundaries and do things to keep yourself disciplined. If a bunch of my basil starts to die I will try as hard as I can to save it over the course of 2-3 days, if there's no way to save it then I can at least allow it to return to the soil as it once came, and restart with a new seed.

to thank the animal/tree/land for helping them live.

It is easy for a large puppy to injure a chicken. All she has to do is pounce playfully, put her paw on the chicken. Poor chicken. But Morgan I think you are being a little hard on yourself. Abby didn't kill the chicken. Once the chicken was down injured and immobile Abby didn't attack the chicken or tear it up. She didn't use the chicken as a toy and shake it. All night long the chicken was there and Abby didn't touch it anymore. That is pretty amazing. I'm so sorry that the chicken got injured and died. Sometimes bad things happen. Abby proved she is not a chicken killing dog. She is just a playful puppy and was too rough. HUGS

Great video!!! Honesty is such an important thing & the reality of farm life includes some tragedies like this one!! Don't be so hard on yourself!!! I'm sorry for your loss!! Toby looks SO happy playing with his new sister!!!

Sorry for your loss. I agree with the comments that Abby played to ruff & Toby intervened. Glad your still working with her & fine tuning her skills at this young puppy stage. Between you & Toby, she will be a fine dog.
