Empathy vs Sympathy: Which one are you?

  • Feeling bad for someone is not the same as empathy. Empathy is the ability to understand the emotions of someone else without feeling the emotions. Sympathy is the physical display of empathy. You hug them, you try to put yourself in their shoes. Psychopaths have empathy but they don't have sympathy. Altruism is detached and emotionless, based on doing what is right. Which ones do you relate to? Does this video help clarify the difference between empathy, sympathy and altruism?

    • @crystale4143
      @crystale4143 6 ปีที่แล้ว +88

      +Zixer I think that's still empathy because empathy doesn't mean feeling sorry for someone.

      Crystal E yea thats right. Is it still the same thing if you dont relate? Say for example someone may be upset their mom is dead, you cant exactly relate because maybe your parents are both alive but you think in their perspective and know what they go through. Im confused lol is that empathy or sympathy?

    What stops me from helping others is social anxiety
    I'm afraid that if I talk to them or help them- they're going to yell at me and others around me are going to judge me because I was helping them. As if I was just doing it for attention, not to genuinely help the person. Even when I walk away from the old lady that sells keychains on the streets, I would look back, and tell myself how horrible I am of a person to not help the struggling lady.

    • @ahhhhcheeww
      @ahhhhcheeww 6 ปีที่แล้ว +89

      D•Va Hana Song Thats your problem. I dont know you, but i think you are an amazing person on the inside and out. And what you do to help others I love and appreciate, but your problem is the anxiety. I used to have anxiety that was so bad I wouldnt go to school for weeks just because I didnt want to talk to people or be seen. Its always good to help people but you cant help others unless you help yourself. Well, technically you can, but how can you really do a better job of helping if you dont help you first.

    • @ahhhhcheeww
      @ahhhhcheeww 6 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      D•Va Hana Song I suggest getting an app so you can talk to someone about your anxiety. You can talk to a therapist to but I only say app because at least for my case i wouldnt even want to see the person i talked to one on one in a room so an app with a random person i didnt know helped me more.

    here's a summary, based on info in video:
    *Pity:* Feeling bad for someone. Acknowledging their pain, being distressed by their situation, but not acting to help them.
    Example: Feeling upset by witnessing homelessness, but not stopping to help
    *Sympathy* : Caring without personal experience of their issues. Physical display of pity.
    Example: Stopping to talk to a homeless person, telling them "you'll be okay!" When you've never been homeless
    *Empathy:* caring, *and* being able to personally understand their struggle.
    Example: as someone who used to be homeless, you see a homeless person, you feel upset, you give them loose change.
    *Psychopathy* : The lack of care. Possible personal understanding, but not empathy because no genuine care.
    Example: you see a homeless person, you to have been homeless, but you don't care that they're homeless.
    *Compassion* : Empathy or Sympathy *and* action to find a solution
    Example: you see a homeless person, and you take the time to talk to them, you ask them what they need, and you help them to fulfill those needs.
    *Altruism* : Acting to do the right thing regardless of a presence of empathy or sympathy or not. "Helping" without understanding the problem (can be problematic)
    Example: you throw away someones needles, because drugs are bad. But they're still addicted, now they need to reuse dirty needles
    ....howd I go?

      Then most people are psychopaths as most people don't care. Altruism is probably the worst as you can't help without understanding. Without understanding you can help purely by luck and chance and is ought to bring more harm than good.

    I think I'm a mixed bag of everything.
    For instance... If I see a poor man begging on the street I always wanna help but the people around me won't let me and they continue to drive away saying that they are just beggars. That makes me feel bad, but I know there's nothing I can do at that point. Then there was another time I watched a video about a real girl who came home one night to her stabbed mother dead on the floor. She was accused of killing her mother and sent to jail. I cried and cried especially when I heard the 911 call she made after finding her mom because I could hear her pain and suffering. I could see myself finding my mom dead and being completely devastated. And to be blamed for her mom's death as well? I felt awful for her and couldn't believe the pain she endured. And in other instances I feel nothing but I still want to help and make people feel better. I think that's how everyone else is too! Nobody is completely empathetic all the time nor sympathetic all the time. We all just kinda... Feel different things with different people and situations. :)
    Oh, and also if you read this far, holy cow, nice patience! You get a virtual potato.

    I'm sympathetic. One time I was coming back from a party and I saw a man sleeping on a bench. I thought he might be a young drunk dude who didn't make it home from a party (he had his face covered with a hood), so I decided to wake him up and help him out, but it turned out to be an old homeless man who just wanted some food and a cigarette. I promised him I would come back, went to the shop to buy some bread and sausages, asked someone for a cig on the street and returned to the guy. He was so happy he had tears in his eyes and we talked for an hour, he told me his story and at the end he said he will never forget me... It felt so nice

    Honestly, it depends on the situation, if i see a homeless man, I'm more likely to pity them, if it's a really close friend in need, I am likely to feel either sympathetic or empathetic, and will help them out of compassion, if it's a friend I'm not so close to I'm more likely to try and be sympathetic if it's something I can't relate to, and might be more likely to help out of altruism compared to compassion.... for me it literally just depends on the person and what the problem is, I'm shy and socially anxious and find it hard to approach people if I don't know them, even if i really want to help, I hope that someone else will because I'm not confident enough to and don't believe I have the ability and the skills to help, and I hate that I feel so helpless... but in the homeless situation, all I can do is pity, because I wish to never find myself in that position... it's complicated

    I was homeless for like 2 weeks once, it kinda sucks ass, but you would be surprised how many people actually donate you money, i was asleep outside of this tunnel/overpass thing and when i woke up i had a note in my hand with like $100 in it, some guy said that he hopes i get back on my feet.
    It's been like 8 years since that happened
    (i had moved out of my parent's house and didn't really have anywhere to go, i only really went there to shower and do my laundry, as i was determined to get my own house, also because i couldnt exactly go and handle people's food in rags, i started renting an apartment with the money from being a beggar and from my job at KFC in 2 weeks or something like that, have been donating to homeless shelters and such ever since)

    Thank you so much for making me understand myself better. For some reason, I always knew how someone feels in detail, tho I've never been through things they've been through.
    That's why it makes me so mad when someone says : You don't understand my pain cuz you've never felt it. But they are the ones that truly don't understand me. They have no idea how hard it is to feel the things you have never lived through. That's a gift, but also a curse. People usually have to deal with some problems, but not all of them. But when you are like me, you just feel weight of all the problems in the world on your back...
    Worst thing is seeing and feeling things happen but not being able to change them...

      Blinding Sunrise Don't worry... You're not alone :) I feel the same and sometimes I try to help, but I don't know how because of lack of experience, but I really do feel for them... I hate to feel uneasy because of this desire to help, but unability to do so... Especially that I dealt with people who attempted suicide in the past or are depressed and I'm sure I've heard some of them say "you don't know how it feels", even though I can't stop thinking about them and of solutions I can give them...

    A lot of the times I wanted to help homeless people, I’ve experienced them to be “crazy” “unstable”. Other times when a wife is being mistreated in public or person being bullied in public.. you risk getting attacked by the victims attacker as well.
    That’s why a lot of the time, you can’t do much to help. You’d have to garner some enormous balls to either verbally defend the victim or physically defend the victim.
    It’s not only about empathy or sympathy.

    A good friend of me had a bad childhood with bad school, health issues and bad decisions. Due to distance i can mostly help with money only, but it saved her from beeing homeless.
    They say that friendships end if it come to money.......i don´t think so. I´m an introvert Ôo i have only a few friends and it´s the right thing to help her if i can.

    I'd probably pitty them with a desire to show compasion through sympathy. I'm in a situation where I can't help, because I have to take care of myself first. I might not have it as bad as they have, but I have struggles I have to deal with before I can start showing propper compasion towards people I don't know.

    I Don't know. I guess I'd do nothing.
    In winter I see homeless every day at trains stations begging for money. Nearly no one stops. Sometimes I pass 6 or 7 of them on my way. Sometimes even more, sometimes one or two less. That makes 12-20 homeless people I see nearly everyday.
    It is not rare to see homeless people.
    At the beginning I tried to give them money but then I passed the next and the next and the next etc. and I realized I can't help them all.
    I still give some of them a bit money or my meals if I haven't finished them and I donate all my clothes and all my old things I don't need anymore. But giving someone new clothes or a blanket etc. ....I don't have the money nor the resources for that.

    • @ducklingscap897
      @ducklingscap897 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Zeeba Neighba
      That's great.
      I guess once I am an adult and earn my own money I will try to do more.
      But as a simple student, living on my parents pocket money and a bit extra from a side job (At least I don't live in the US so going to University is free for me).
      I leave my house with my backpack and train ticket. I don't have a lot to spare that I could give people on the street. When it comes to clothes I am a very practical person: I have what I need and everything I don't wear at least once in a fortnight gets donated so I can't even run around with a jacket or clothes to spare (and considering the fact that 1,58 m/5,2 feet is not the tallest I doubt they'd fit anyone anyway) and I don't take more food with me than I can eat :( (Sometimes I make an extra sandwich to give away though)
      So I'm always passing them wondering what I could give them. Any Ideas?

    • @ducklingscap897
      @ducklingscap897 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sami No one in my country ears peanut butter jelly sandwiches 😂
      I‘ve never eaten that I know it is a thing in the US though.
      Also it sounds kinda unhealthy?
      I usually take a few extra apples or other fruits with me. 1kg apples cost around 1€ so it is pretty cheap and they have vitamins.
      Unfortunately I rarely encounter the same person twice so I can’t really ask for preferences. They constantly switch their spots and I meet the majority of them in trains and different train stations.
      I just hope they like fruits and leftover sandwiches.

    I'm a person of very little but would give him the jacket off my back, for compassion!!!! I would never want anyone to pity me, so I can't pity someone else. I hope that doesn't sound rude or mean for I don't mean it that way. I just know how I'd feel if someone pitted me, so I try to put myself in their shoes is all.

But giving someone new clothes etc.
      I don't have the money nor the blankets and resources to do that.
      As I said homeless are not rare, how often did you actually do that?
      Like everyone is writing they give him a blanket, treat him a meal etc. etc.
      If everyone would actually do that there'd be a lot less freezing and hungry homeless....but there aren't.

  • @Maijorsam

    i'd definitely give the old man a blanket or money,
    i try to give homeless people money but, i don't have much of it either as i am rather young.. but sometimes my mum gives me money to give to homeless people, i think they deserve help, even if it is a short term thing like £1.. at least it'll give them something to eat for a day. i know giving a blanket or some new clothes would probably be more useful for them but... currently i cannot carry around blankets or clothes to give out... maybe when i'm older i'll have a bag designated for homeless people.

      That would be compassion- the urge to actually help someone you feel bad for rather than feel bad for a moment and do nothing about the situation (sympathy). It's defined in the video at 2:47. Also, @ryan ross's eyebrow, it wouldn't necessarily be empathy based on the available info @I like musicals mentioned. In order for their feeling to be empathy, it must include a shared experience, an "i know what you're going through" type of resonance. But there was no mention of that, so it may not be empathy.

    pitty: when you just feel bad about someone’s pain without doing anything .
    sympathy: when you feel bad and offer help (it is physical display of pitty).
    empathy: it is both caring and knowing the struggle the other is going through.
    compassion:is either empathy or sympathy paired with the desire to relieve their pain.
    altruism: is something different from pitty, sympathy, empathy and compassion.it means doing right thing without feeling bad

    • @lazyperfectionist3978
      @lazyperfectionist3978 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      At least we have that in common, Meisterling. I've personally never felt sad for others when they died, even my own family members. I cried because it was expected, a situation where it would be highly sus if I didn't shed a tear.
      If anything, moping about the person's death doesn't do anything productive, nor does it allow a good relationship with loss and certainly tarnishes the memory of the deceased. There are numerous ways that person could have died, as well as choices and events that could have possibly prevented you from ever knowing of or meeting them, and quite frankly I'd think anyone who'd mourn me after death and dwelled on it is a fucking lunatic.
      I'd rather remember the good, than dwell on their end. They died, so what. At least you got to have some experiences with them, that they got to be in your life, and you in their life. Death is one of the most normal things to occur, the memories you got to have are unique in their own right.

    I will probably just show pity or sympathy... I rarely show compassion because 1) I have been lied to by a supposed homeless person who needed money for food but meet her again at a fancy pizzaria with her husband later that day...
    2) I do also have a tendency to judge homeless people in my country, because it's so difficult to become homeless and poor here because of our welfare system, that if you do,the go to thinking is "it's probably their own fault"...
    I feel much more sympathetic and compassionate in countries where I know people live in absolute poverty without any ressources or programs to help you out of poverty...
    However if locals tell me it's not a good idea to give to them or you should not buy from the children...
    I usually listen because yes I have money, but not enough to feed the entire world...

    I honestly would like to give the hypothetical man on the street a blanket out of compassion, but anxiety and my introvertedness diverts me away from doing that.

    This video is one of my favourites, and not just because of the interesting topic. The beginning with the manikin who's walking through the street is a great introduction. The video neatly explains the words and the example with the toy is simple and easily understood. And I think the music and the deep voice of the narrator fit perfectly to the topic of the video.
    One thing I would suggest: Maybe you can do a summary in the end of such videos to get a short overview what exactly the differences are between the terms.

    When I went to England for a week with my Mum about 3 years ago when I was 12, I saw like 5 homeless people while we were walking. It hurt so much, because I've never seen any in Australia before. I asked Mum everytime we walked past one if we could give them money or get them some food or something, but she said no because do not personally have enough money. (We went to England out of winning a competition, the payment for the flight was provided by the competition people.) I told myself that when I grew up to an adult, I'd become rich and travel to help as many struggling people as I could. I've felt this way my whole life, but now that I actually saw it happening to someone other than our family, I felt more motivated to do it. I've personally dealt with being homeless and many other severe struggles that we consider sensitive issues, but that just makes me want to help other people more... Sigh. I cannot wait to see all those smiles.

    I've had those times where I felt and understood the pain of what other people were going through, and that I wanted to help them and make them feel better. Sad to say, I wasn't able to do so... and why were personal reasons I do not want to share here. But regarding the question at the end of the video, I'd react by either Empathy or Sympathy, but most likely the latter. The least thing I could do to help those people is to give them a bit of my money, actually.
    Anyways, awesome video as always, Psych2Go! Keep it up! You guys are one reason that got me into psychology (though it won't be the career I go for), and helped me better understand other people's emotions and whatnot! :D

    Once, I tried to eliminate 'sympathy'. This broke me, and I get easily empathized with other people. But later on, its getting worse. Just like the video mention, I have the psychopathic tendencies. So what I do then was, cut all my ties with 'friends' and 'acquaintance' and all that left is just "emotionless me". I just carry on my life and hope for the best.
