- What is the role of character education in the classroom? Educator Jonathan Juravich discusses how we can go beyond teaching empathy as a 'soft skill' and make it actionable.

When you tell a kindergartner to "walk in someone else's shoes" it can be kind of confusing. Why should they put on someone else's shoes? What if they wear a different shoe size? Art educator and 2018 Ohio State Teacher of the Year Jonathan Juravich is interested in finding ways to teach empathy that go beyond catchphrases, and instill an awareness of others that can be expressed through action. Drawing from experiences in his classroom and home, Jonathan describes several exercises he's used to help students identify their emotions and invest in the feelings of others.

“How do we define empathy to our youngest children? […] Even a simplified definition such as “understanding and sharing the feelings of others” is really hard to internalize as a 5-year-old. So instead, a very purposeful conversation about practical, observable behaviors is necessary.”
Reminds me of this quote... “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.” Philippians 2:3-4. If we are selfish, we are not self-aware and thus cannot have empathy for others.
Hi Mr J it’s your student Lindsey this was my art teacher I’m elementary school and he was so fun with the quick draws he did at the beginning of class to learning abt cultures around the world he’s the reason I want to become an art teacher and I remember telling him that in the 5th grade he lit up with joy and told me I would be better than him it changed my perspective on everything to know the most important figure in my life at that time believe in me.
I had Mr.J as a teacher in elementary school and he was amazing. Overall a wholesome, genuine guy. It truly is a honor to have been in not only the same district as this man, but the same classroom for 5 years of my life. Truly blessed
I am jealous :D A wonderful teacher! Happy you had good experiences with him!
I also had him in school, even though he didn't like my art and hated my corner sun, he was so sweet
"To live lives that would consider others more than themselves." My eyes were filled with tears after hearing this. What a world we would have if we taught that to our children.
So proud to say that I worked in the same district with this amazing teacher and person
this is my art teacher from elementary school! this is so cool. so well spoken! :)
Then what school
Bc he’s the art teacher for mine
Jonathan’s approach to empathy education is so refreshing! Teaching students to go beyond 'walking in someone else's shoes' and turning empathy into actionable behavior is exactly what’s needed in today’s classrooms. I’ve found that when young people truly understand and express empathy, it transforms not just their interactions but their entire outlook on relationships. In my work with youth, I also emphasize empathy as a tool for action-helping students invest in others' feelings and experiences. Thanks for sharing these great insights-I explore similar themes in my videos on empathy in action.
These kids are going to be running our world in 20-30 years
Sad 😢 parents failing and not really getting it 🙌🙏🙌🙏🙌😨😨😨😱😱
Nice talk brother, it reminded me of my medical school years, how we used to spend a very nice time talking about these things. “Taste the tasteless”, a quote that will ever be stuck with me I heard during one of the rounds. It taught us that we need to put ourselves in the patient’s shoes and this way we learn how to sympathize with them..
thank you sir, your video brought back amazing memories
Mr J was the best teacher anyone could ever have I have him in 5th grade he is a amazing teacher and person
Hade not have
this is wonderful. I'm so glad topics like empathy are covered in a variety of ways. Sometimes we need to hear a message multiple times, and with seemingly unrelated examples, to fully incorporate a new skill into our daily practices.
In love with ur words… changed my life😊
Thank you!
Thank you for all the empathy information. You are great speaker and dad.
Empathy is not just kindness. It is what keeps U safe. To be able to put yourself in another's shoes is to know their intentions!
I'm spellbound by this. I read a book with similar content, and I was absolutely spellbound. "The Art of Meaningful Relationships in the 21st Century" by Leo Flint
That was an enlightening speech. Thank you
Excellent!
Amazing!My learners must learn this
there is a condition that is the opposite of narcissism yet no one seems to think it is bad that a person can't help themselves and only others. brain injuries go both way.
What a great talk!!! Thank you!
Very nice talk!
This guy...
He's just cool.

🛐🙏❤facts💓❤💕❤❤❤💖💞❤♥️❤💗❤💕❤❤💖😭Heavenly Father JesusGod, I know that I am a sinner. I know that I deserve the consequences of my sin. However, I am trusting in Jesus Christ as my Savior. I believe that His death and resurrection provided for my forgiveness. I trust in Jesus and Jesus alone as my personal Lord and Savior. Thank you Lord, for saving me and forgiving me! In Jesus Mighty God's holy name, Amen!"
💗❤❤💞This Gospel message if you continue to believe this message, you will be saved: For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried , that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time,
Well I believe Empathy means Care , share, volunteer
Wonderful video
People without empathy can do all the things you wrote down.
I try not to live in fear but it’s so clear where our world is destined. Apart of empathy is awareness right? So what about all the children whose parents just give them a phone to entertain themselves or put on TH-cam before school. These kids have 0 awareness and they have trouble even making eye contact? I guess tragedy’s like this is the exact reason we need to be exercising our faith in God. We are doomed. The seeds have already been planted and it’s going to take an act of God to fix the damage.

💔🙏🙏🙏🙌working mothers lord help us 🙏🙌🙏🙌
this video was an explanation of what empathy is, not how to teach it. the only tip was asking what made you happy today? what made you sad? 10 minutes wasted
I've had this issue with 99% of Ted talks. I've come to accept that they aren't really here to provide us with tools and methods. Their intent is more so to make us think, and to consider others' ideas and opinions. To open our minds to problems around the world and how some people out there are dealing with them. I had stopped listening to Ted talks for a while for this reason, but after some months, realized that they have value of a different type, than a "how to" video. Understandably, we still want those videos that give us straight-to-the-point solutions.
I honestly don't think you can totally. I have learnt empathy and know the steps to take to appear empathetic, but I have don't actually feel anything close to empathy.
There’s varying levels of empathy, but complete apathy can be an issue. I’m glad you practice empathy though even if you can’t feel it! There’s a lot of disorders that can cause apathy. I would just seek a therapist if you ever think that your thoughts or actions could cause harm. This is for anyone reading this that may feel the same.
If she’s blind how is she able to cook
It's about blind cooking th-cam.com/video/o1Al7Ogx8H8/w-d-xo.html
Smell sound taste and feel? Also the importance of keeping things in certain places.
Really did not get full understanding of HOW to teach this to .... losers.... who couldn't care less about others.
thumb down because of the unskippable ad in the middle of the video
maybe learn some empathy??? These people put a lot of work into the content they provide and may just want to be paid?
Google "Adblock Plus" and install it. It is free and you'll never see ads again in TH-cam. To make it work, make sure you are connected on your Google account. I've been using this for years and I don't regret it.

Empathy is a grossly overrated quality. If you want me to know how your are feeling then just tell me...this avoids any room for confusion. I can't sense your emotions and feel no need to do so.
Empathy is a seducing, demonic spirit..
Don’t be an empath. Have a discerning spirit.
Seek the truth instead of acting how other people want you to act
Empathy is a social construct
