Ford Mustang Boss 302 Review (M3 Fighters Pt.1) - Everyday Driver

  • The limited edition Ford Mustang Boss 302 (2012-2013 Model Years) is aimed at the E90 series BMW M3. The guys love the E90 M3, so they spent some time in the canyons to see if the Boss 302 can really dethrone the M3. And is the Boss better than the other M3 alternative, the 1M coupe?

    I have a Race Red Boss 302 for a daily. Screw the refinement and the need for a IRS, the Boss is just a BEAST!

    You get far more than just 40hp with the Boss. Brakes, suspension, seats, aerodynamics are all different.

    • @Nebulagamer17
      @Nebulagamer17 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      They alluded to that, they were clearly speaking power wise. I'm more worried about the fact they simplified the destroked and bored engine and lightweight rotating assembly to just more power and less torque. With an intake these can reach 8500 rpm, which is incredible, and it doesn't lose power up there

      ANDHD and with forged internals, we know today (2020) it can hold 700, even 800hp to the wheels, which is like 900hp at the crank.

    Me again and again great work guys. Just one thing, the GT and the Boss do not have the same engine. The Ford engine code name is not even the same. (Coyote for the GT and Roadrunner for the Boss). The block is the same but it's got forged internals,it's own connecting rods, pistons and valves and valves spring. it's own CNC ported head(not even the same aluminum alloy), it's own camshaft and unike high flowing intake. Just saying, don't want to be a pain in the ass!

      @@Jdalio5 I was the owner of a 2014 Mustang GT and now upgraded to a 2013 Boss 302. Not the same ENGINE. I even had the intake manifold from the boss on my GT the engine did not respond like this. Different Beast

  • @Mr2013GT
    @Mr2013GT 11 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Boss 302 doesn't have "the same engine as the GT w/ more hp". The GT and the Boss share the same block and crankshaft, and the GT does also have forged rods, but that's about where it ends. Boss has forged pistons, GT has cast hypers. Boss has tighter valvesprings, more lift on the exhaust cams to help it breathe more up top, and cylinder heads that flow even more than the already ridiculous 5.0. Plus, the Boss intake manifold allows for more torque than the 5.0 above 5,000 rpm, where it counts.

    Great review, thanks. Have a 2013 Boss and love it. Use it as my main daily driver here in Colorado. Run Blizzak LM-60 tires for the snow and drive it year round. Has been great and a lot of fun in all situations, including tight, windy, and bumpy mountain roads, rain, etc. Same great innate characteristics remain even when grip is reduced. Previous cars have been C6 Z06, C5 Z06, '04 Cobra, WRX, and SRT-4 Neon. Boss is definitely my favorite car yet.

    I enjoy every video you guys make. The format, the analysis and how you convey the feeling of driving, priceless. The only thing that makes me a bit sad is the level of discussion (comments) on your videos, that just doesn't match the quality of the video itself. I hope to see more content this coming year, maybe some hot hatch action? The market is really interesting in '16 ;) ps. I bought an S2000 on faith after watching your content and it didn't disappoint ;)

    I never thought you guys would like the 1M that much. I had a 135i and liked it a lot. I traded it in for a 335i M Sport and love it even more. I never drove the M3 but, I'm sure it's one heck of a car and I can see why you guys like it so much. I owned 3 Mustang GT's in the past but at that time they had less than 300 bhp. I'm sure it would be a different experience owning a Mustang now. Especially the Boss 302. Thanks for another great video guys. I love your style and always look forward.

Much respect give to yalls show and youtube videos it keeps people with the love of the auto industry up to date and current on new and used vehicles specs inside and out; I do however would love to see some videos and reviews on the new Ford f series trucks think it would make a great video for truck people.

    Great question. We don't want to drive the same cars over either. We try to only return to cars based on new models coming out, or new competition for cars we really like. It's been 3 years since we reviewed a Mustang. It was 3 years between Evo reviews (and it only returned b/c the Golf R called it out). We also take into account viewer requests and cars that get a lot of search traffic. We've got lots of cool used and generational comparisons coming. And we're listening to suggestions!

    Great comments and compliments to you guys and your show! As a Boss owner and also german car snob, I feel exactly as you do! The Boss is my first Mustang and Ford product. I think Ford did everything right with this car... limited production, limited colors, recaro option, TracKey, etc. Bout time that US auto makers started thinking of handling and performance vs. straight line. The only thing I wish the Boss had more of was Alcantara! Headliner, dash, door inserts, shift boot, e brake.

    Cool review, enjoyed it. Would I ever sell my 750 rwhp Shelby to get a boss, nope, I simply addressed the suspension to better cope with the big time power, not difficult, not that expensive and I have the power of a blown 32V V8..love the Boss love the Shelby.

  • @EverydayDriver
    @EverydayDriver  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Because the 2012 & 2013 Boss are so similar, we chose a 2012 since those are the ones available cheaper/used. Plus, the 1M is also a 2012 model. Yes, new Boss 302s are still available and being marked up wildly.
    Meanwhile, we aren't defending the live rear axle... merely commenting on how good the car is in-spite of that reality. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    As mentioned in the video, Ford specifically set the M3 as their target for the Boss 302. Similarly, when BMW shoved the M3 running gear into a 1 Series they welcomed the comparison to the M3. Obviously the M3, especially the sedan, is a more versatile car.

    I really liked that review guys (1M part too). I cross shopped a Boss and a 1M in fall 2011. Of course both dealers won't let me test drive the cars because they are both so rare. So I drove a 135i M package and a Mustang GT with the Brembo brakes and 19 inch wheels. Love em both but I feel for the Stang, because of the engine sound and rough behavior! So I bought a Boss. My cousin have a E46 M3 and my uncle a 2012 M5, I drove those and still preffer my Boss. Hope to have a chance to try a 1M!

    BOSS the only way to go?..... There's a mustang out there with the name "SHELBY" across the back and a big ass snake head on it. If u want "refinement" don't look at a mustang period. They're not to be compared to BMW's and other "daily drivers. They're mean, angry and hate eurpoean cars. They're not refined and will throw you back. And that is entirely the point....

      It's an upgraded 5.0 Coyote motor. It's not a different motor. It's the same motor just has upgrades. It was more powerful than the STOCK version (coyote) so they NICKNAMED it the Roadrunner. Still a 5.0 coyote essentially.

    great video once again. Can't wait to see the conclusion. But there is one thing that's bothering me: Why are the same cars keep coming back? We've already seen the M3 review and also the Mustang. Same thing with the Evo. These are great cars every enthusiast should consider but there are so much more cars that there isn't a need to repeat. I'd love to see more old vs new like in the M3 review. Often you can pick up a 3-5 year old used one for half the money of a new one. But is it worth it?

    Boss 302 at my work now (car dealer in Sacramento) wish I could buy it!!

  • @nickf9392
    @nickf9392 ปีที่แล้ว

    I own a 2013 Boss 302, and there is nothing wrong with the clutch, it pushes in just fine and is not heavy in the least. The interior is typical mustang, a bit spartan but definitely not cheap or cheesy in the least. The comments about the rough and tumble and being angry and just flat out wrong. The car has a street key and that is a very street friendly way to drive the car, yet with plenty of power on tap when needed. The red key is fun time, more aggressive, yes for sure, but it mirrors how you drive the car, aggressive or full on performance is right there on tap. But the red key is also very street friendly when going easy. The red key idle with the flow restrictors taken out is just an amazing thing to listen to. Idle is not loud, but has a unique throaty grumble or gurgle that sounds like a dragon purring. Very throaty and alive sounding. Floor it however, and the sound goes immediately to a fine tuned race motor and that IS aggressive. I love the car, mild when going mild, but kickass fun when you want it to be. It is really like having two cars in one. If you are a BMW fan, then love your M3, however this Mustang has absolutely nothing to apologize for and underhanded complements wear very thin with me. I used to blow the doors off of M3's with my California Special, and the Boss a totally next level above that.

    I do like M3's but recently I found the moment when I truly fell in love with Mustang as a car. My father has a reasonably stock GT convertible. A live rear axle car with half the rigidity taken out should be a bad choice as a daily driver in Ireland, except we recently found out thats not the case. We drove over to mainland Europe, crossing France , Germany and Belgium without any hassle, and having fun whilst doing so. An impressive feat for a car designed to go straight, quickly!

  • @thelaborpeasant
    @thelaborpeasant 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I can't stand BMW guys. Always thinking they're driving off the dealer lot with the hottest shit on the road. They talk about things like "refinement" in a performance argument. Its stupid to me. And they all repeat that stigma "muscle cars are great if all you want is a big nasty motor but they don't turn". What about the Boss 302, Z/28, 1LE Camaro? In 1967, 1969, and 1988 these cars were some of the best handling cars in the world, and still are today, especially in their price range. Yet all we ever get is "muscle cars don't turn". And that's just a couple, there's many muscle cars throughout history that staked their claim specifically on handling. Maybe I'm looking at this wrong, maybe when I'm driving a Boss or 1LE, or Z/28 I should be happy to be underestimated so badly

    Haha..although I own a 2013 GT this type of video make me happy to be a mustang owner in 2013. The 5.0 liter is such a well balanced engine. I do have to correct you guys however. The engine in the boss is not the same motor as GT with only more power. Boss 5.0 motor has forged internals and ported heads along with a shorter intake manifold. That's where the lower tq come from actually but able to rev to 7500 stock and even to 8k safely when tuned.

    I love these comparisons. Lets do one with 300c srt8 or charger srt8 compare to a higher end Germans four door sedans!

    I think Paul said it best "I would own this car, absolutely, but I think I would own it as a second car."
    I have a Mustang (not a Boss 302 sadly, mine is a good deal older) but it is my second car. I have a nice midsize 4 door sedan as my daily and drive the Mustang on nice days, or when I just want to enjoy driving.

    The 2015 Mustang 5.0 is supposedly using the Boss intake and power should be similar, around 445 hp.

    I loved my Boss 302, I despised the shifter in that car though. It was always the biggest disappointment every time I hit the road. I think I'd still take it over the E92, now if were talking timewarp example of an E46 M3 then I might be swayed.

      R James easy fix. Should have bought an aftermarket shifter. I got a Steeda Tri Ax a week after I bought my Boss. $200 for the shifter and $120 for the install. Short throws and shifts like a dream.

    Nice entertaining review had to check the prices where i live 77.000 $for new boss and 80.000 for m3 with 10.000miles both sold by dealerships. so if i had the Money the m3 is the better deal, if i lived in the USA maybe a different story

    Guys you do a really good job, after TG and Drive my favorite show. What if you would compare an M3 to a road legal Racecar? I have driven the E36 and E46 M3's but they never really got me. After that I could sit once on the passengers seat of a Dax-Rush-Busa turbo,and have driven a Regual Caterham Roadsport 175 and all of the sudden M becomes for me only Marketing.I wanted to buy a Used E90 M3 next year, but now I got an Alfa 156 Diesel for every day and getting a Caterham or Dax next summer.

    Hey guys, did you consider the Camaro SS 1LE for this comparison? I've seen other reviews of it on track and it puts down better laptimes than the Boss302.... regardless I still enjoy your reviews. Very refreshing from the usual slew of biased journalist magazines. :)

    To call the BOSS engine "essentially the same" as the 5.0 is 100 incorrect. The engine is completely reworked. Starting with a fully forged rotating assembly with Mahle pistons, the heads are unique with ports and combustion chambers which receive 2.5 hours CNC work per head, along with sodium filled exhaust valves. The intake manifold is a racing style intake and the cams are aggressively reworked. Needles to say...It is significant.

    Ford doesn't pump sound actively into the cabin they did so on '05-'10 models, but not on current 5.0 cars. They do attenuate certain frequencies not native of the engine using viscoelastically dampened IP cover and gauge shield.

    Hey guys, how about a comparison of the GT350 and the M3/M4? I'd love to see that!
