The anniversary of that car is coming up and I think that's why Ford hasn't released a new GT500 yet cuz it's gonna be a BOSS 429 or the Mach 1 like they've been hinting at. I hope it's both honestly but the top car bringing back the BOSS 429 name with a twin turbo 5.0? 😍😍😍😍
Auto Young I don't think they are gonna do a Boss 9 and here is why. You clearly don't know that much about American muscle. True American muscle cars would never have a turbo, I am not saying a turbo is bad I am just saying there is no place for them on a muscle car. Second the reason why they call it a Boss 429 is because the engine has 429 cubic inches. That translates to 7 liters and 7 liters is a massive engine by today's standards and I don't think they will build it that big. Plus they can't have a 50 year reunion for every Mustang because there are like 10 Mustangs that are 50 years old.
Auto Young You are still an idiot for not knowing what 429 is. Giving a twin turbo 5 liter to a car with 429 on the badge is like saying a nuclear submarine is powered by sails, it's a lie that doesn't make sense.
I rode in the 302 Laguna seca today. My old neighbor got his a few months ago for just $40k. It looks exactly the same as this one except his is orange and the light deletes we're already removed for air flow. He floored it and I had the time of my life. when i was teenager my next door neighbor's son bought a new 1969 boss mustang then he was drafted into Vietnam and never came back, that car sat in the driveway for more than 30 years and just withered and rotted away, so many people wanted to buy that car but it was never sold. REPLY
There’s a comment on this video under Maconp111 th-cam.com/video/Pw8qds_SHB0/w-d-xo.html Is that your neighbor possibly My dad had a 69 Boss 302 and died in 79 when I was 13, I just wanted to drive that thing one time. :(.
Some nice very low mileage Boss's kicking around now...which I had the room in my garage, this car shifts so well and sounds tremendous, just a nice piece of muscle to drive around and rip down the strip once and a while....
This is my dream Mustang but can't afford it. Now finally bought new 2015 Mustang V6 like the looks of the new mustang. Someday hope I can visit Jay's garrage with my two sons. Love your shows..
always love a mustang, ever since i was 8years old and my dad said there are three movie a boy need to watch in his life, vanishing point, (the first) gone in 60 seconds and bullitt and just been a fan of mustangs
I'm so glad you asked about the intake. I can't imagine Air Raid spends as much money and time designing theirs I've always wanted to ask a factory engineer that question. Thanks
Engineer is so full of it. Plenty to do that can make the car better from factory. I gained 41 RWHP with a larger throttle body, intake and (with tune) and cat back exhaust on my 2014 GT. And yes, the car was dynoed before and after.
salzero1 one thing about factory balance is part of a system. Better for him means things work together the Best. The factory runs federal emission test and endurance. Driveway mods are good guesses but no real test.
What's great is that the bar is constantly being raised. As opposed to the 70s/80s where the bar was constantly being lowered. Be grateful Mariscal, you don't know how soul-killing it is to live in a time where lowered standards mean crappier cars and less fun. If you hate cars; freedom and fun, vote for the Democrats.
Great information in this vid. The best is debunking the aftermarket cold air intake myth. It has been proven with testing that with these modern performance vehicles you will not get any HP increase with aftermarket intakes.
Gotta give Ford credit the Mustang honestly out classes the Camaro in looks and it's interior. I like the Camaro's V8's, but Ford did a great job on this car.
@ Dennis Moran I am one of those guys who likes great cars of all kinds, regardless of manufacturer - and I particularly like classic American muscle cars. I'm on my second Mustang GT now - a 2013 - but I still have some love for the Camaro and Firebird. Once owned a 1969 Firebird convertible that I still kick myself for selling. I understand that the new generation of Camaros are absolute rockets in terms of their performance, but I just can't get with the exterior styling on them. It's a shame, too, because I loved how the previous generation (which ended in 2002) looked and ran. Even I liked the exterior, I still can't see out of the new Camaro. So yeah, I am crossing my fingers that the next generation of the car gives me something to get excited about.
I remember back in '68 riding in one, and it had a short throw Hurst shifter on it. That acceleration really threw me back into the seat, and was at 100 mph before I knew it. Very quick and very fast.
I took a 2013 ford mustang base model out for a test drive, it comes standard 302 horse power motor, the sound was just awesome, I pasted a semi, floor the gas and then looked back I was already three blocks away and doing over 100 kph, and the tach did not even go over 2000. I did not qualify for financing but that is one hell of a car even for a base model, the engine was just massive looking. ford really has done right by allowing bigger motors at reasonable pricing.
+gerry miles i test drove one, it was amazing to drive, but for me it would've been a terrible daily driver. I ended up going with a 2012 mustang gt cali special, and i love it!
Jay love all your vids u make u are a true car guy .or well anything with a motor , love all your vintage bikes.. Love the Boss302, that coyote is a amazing power plant .remember the firsy coyote i drove i did an alignment on a 13gt with the track pack 373 , torsion diff and i was blown away , far cry from the 2v 03 i had , i had a 03 cobra that was a beast..but keep making these vids ..love them all..
Meh... Lately Ford has been more about size:power ratios. For them to make a car with a 429 cubic inch V8 today would be cool, but impractical, and could spoil the handling of the car thanks to the inherent size of the block. Frankly I'd prefer if they kept making engines with no more than 6.0 Litres of displacement and still crazy amounts of horsepower and torque. Apparently the new GT500 is going to have a twin turbo version of the "Voodoo" flat plane crank 5.2L V8 you'd normally find in the GT350. And paired with the 8200 RPM redline, those turbos could be making a shitload of boost and all through the range, which will more than likely be enough to absolutely spank anything else Fiat/Chrysler or GM currently make or will make in the near future. As much as I love Superchargers, if Ford wants to go above and beyond, Turbos are the way to go.
So much BS from the engineer that shift linkage and intake are better than any aftermarket option. I beg to differ that MGW race spec is quite much better than stock :D
Many aftermarket companies also copy-paste the designs from car to car without doing car specific research first. There are of course companies that really develop parts for cars and they can be good.
If the mustang, camaro, and challenger aren't muscle cars then that means they don't make muscle cars... Nevermind that they are over 400 hp, rear wheel drive, coupes that seat 4 people, open grille design, v8 rumble and fit the exact description of a muscle car (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscle_car). If the Buick Grand national from from 84 to 88 and the monte carlo SS from 83 to 87 are considered muscle then you must not have two brain cells to rub together if you think this isn't muscle.
Otto von Chesterfield, Esquire If I may suggest, please don't completely rely on Wiki for your information since it can be edited by most anyone and until any possibly erroneous info is caught and corrected (if it is) it will display something other than the truth. It seems valid what I read for muscle car just now. I realize you were replying with your info to someone that didn't think this Mustang was a muscle car. Of course it is. A modern muscle car. I agree with all you said with exception of the years being incorrect and I added info which in most rodder's minds disqualifies many of the Buick turbos and all of the Monte Carlos produced after 1974 (last year of available 454). As far as your info regarding Buick Grand Nationals (T-Type Regals included), the only true, high output models produced from the factory were the '86-'87 models w/ intercoolers. Those are the only two beasts. The 1978-1985 T-Type and 1984-1985 Grand Nationals were not intercooled turbos and without modifications but the SFI non-turbos CAN easily become fast!,Without factory intercoolers, they were only marginally faster than the Camaros and Firebirds produced the same years. The earlier models were even slower.. Buick produced a 1982 Grand National (2-tone paint, even) that had a 4.1 V6 non-turbo with only 125 hp but was available with a 3.8 turbo which had only 175 hp. Hardly what I would consider a muscle car just as any of the other non-intercooled Regal T-Types and GNs. Same goes for the 1983-1988 Monte Carlo SS. Sure, most had a muscle car look but not the performance.
Racer Thanks for the info. I checked some of the sources of the wikipedia article and it seems that the V8 versions are muscle and the V6 is pony and that sounded correct to me.
when i had my stock 1966 GTO from 1972 to 1974,i put on 750 double pump Holley, high lift cam,Hooker headers,it dynoed at 440 hp on the ground, fun car,got about 5 mpg on highway
I'm gonna go ahead and call bullshit on the pat about cold air intakes. Aftermarket parts are almost always better than OEM as far as performance goes. If aftermarket intakes did nothing, they wouldn't sell. That engineer is simply lying. Look up any dyno video, I have a CAI on mine and it improved air flow and HP.
Did you get a tune with your aftermarket intake? If you did that's where the majority of the gains come from. Just an intake on a coyote 5.0 will get you less than 10hp on the top end. The tune will make a huge difference though.
I agree with you. Same thing I thought when I heard him say it. And as Ahennem said, a tune with the intake makes most of the difference. I gained 41 RWHP with a larger throttle body, intake and (with tune) and cat back exhaust on my 2014 GT. Also, Jay Leno said what he likes about a naturally aspirated engine vs a turbo or supercharge is that everything happens right now meaning no lag, there is no lag with a supercharger. Even turbos which do have lag have come a long way. So he's off on that one.
"If aftermarket intakes did nothing, they wouldn't sell." Of course, that's why electric "turbos" sell like crazy on ebay without being able to generate a single horsepower.
gascat100 The Ford guy didn't get a chance to explain everything that happens when the "Track" key is used instead of the regular key. one of the features using the track Program is the 'side exhausts' are opened, which allows free flowing exhaust. So in essence, you have a builtin "Tuner program" for the engine, exhausts, steering..." all adjustable from the factory computer. Remember he did say that using the performance mode key changes 300 different parameters on the car - oh, by the way - the factory warranty is voided too!
The stuff about upgrades is absolutely not true! They build these cars under tight budgets, each piece has to meet certain cost restrictions. Cars are not engineered without cost in mind, unless you are talking about extreme cars 500,000$+. Specific exhausts that cost $2000-3000 for a full setup are obviously going to be better than the stock system.
THIS CAR you wouldn't get a benefit from putting some stupid short ram into it. Other cars, possibly, but not this particular one. He just wasn't specific enough.
FoxHoundUnit89 That's just wrong. Please, look up a comparison test of intakes for this car. They are unbiased as they test a whole bunch, and there are gains with almost every intake. Ya some intakes will lose power, but just be smart and use google.
***** Eh, I would disagree to an extent. Yes, it was engineered very well, but they are engineered to a specific product, not actually to be the best possible with the available resources. The engineers have to work within budgets, regulations placed on automakers, demands from their bosses, etc. And also they can't adjust specifically for where the car will be used or the octane. I just got my car dyno tuned on 94 octane and it runs SO much smoother than stock now (2010 car, so very modern). You just can't match aftermarket because it's so personalized and done on a case by case basis, as opposed to from the factory where they have to make the car usable no matter what the scenario, altitude, location, etc
True cold air intakes probably. Better air flow in and out creates power end of story. What people dont understand after you open up the intake and exhaust good flowing intake heads become the limitation.
Ian Townsend Not fair for the Mustang, it has a live rear axle, something Europeans last saw on horse and carriages... The M3 would lap it fairly quickly. The Mustang shines elsewhere, mostly on the bill...
Alexander Nevsky Nope, watch the video, you can see for yourself, they added HP and track suspensions, which is just silly, who wants to drive a very powerful bar of soap on a track, I'd rather have brain surgery... Basically that car is a sexy dinosaur, like the overwhelming majority of the US production since 1970, not qualified to park in any European garage and that's truly sad.
These are so rare now, and worth much more. Such a special vehicle. Everyone will want their hands on one 10 years from now, and it will cost them likely twice as much as MSRP was.

I agree Jay, love the balance of this car. I have the GT version, 420 HP...love everything about it. Had a 65 289 Hi Po Mustang in the "day"...this brings back some sweet memories!
when i was teenager my next door neighbor's son bought a new 1969 boss mustang then he was drafted into Vietnam and never came back, that car sat in the driveway for more than 30 years and just withered and rotted away, so many people wanted to buy that car but it was never sold.
REPLY
Unbelievably just so sad.
Yeah i'ts sad, to this day every time i see one it takes me back to that time.
robdbzgt07 sorry to hear that in so many ways.
There’s a comment on this video under Maconp111 th-cam.com/video/Pw8qds_SHB0/w-d-xo.html
Is that your neighbor possibly
My dad had a 69 Boss 302 and died in 79 when I was 13, I just wanted to drive that thing one time. :(.

At 3:26 Jay's vast knowledge of Ford overwhelms the Ford Representative. The rep replies with fillers after that lol...
This Boss is fucking stunning, perfect color combination
I love that car!! Jay you still are the funniest guy in the world! I hope to see you on TV again soon.
The hood louver design is taken from a boat. This model 302 is one great looking mule.
Jay does the absolute best car reviews.
Some nice very low mileage Boss's kicking around now...which I had the room in my garage, this car shifts so well and sounds tremendous, just a nice piece of muscle to drive around and rip down the strip once and a while....
the intake and tune does increase hp and torque...
I love the new mustangs especially the Shelby's and the old fastbacks.
This is my dream Mustang but can't afford it. Now finally bought new 2015 Mustang V6 like the looks of the new mustang. Someday hope I can visit Jay's garrage with my two sons. Love your shows..
If you were looking at a new V6 2015, you would have been able to afford a Boss. They are going for similar money.
I love watching Jay Leno's garage. What got me watching was Jim Shelby GT500 and plus the Christopher Nolan Dark Knight Batmobile
Love the Boss 302 !
Clearly a winner! Good job Ford.
oh man i have a smile on my face
Im just seeing a question mark??! LoooL
Raid AL-Utaibi I literally laughed hard about this LOL.
Raid AL-Utaibi
Ohhh
*****
why you mad bro ?
always love a mustang, ever since i was 8years old and my dad said there are three movie a boy need to watch in his life, vanishing point, (the first) gone in 60 seconds and bullitt and just been a fan of mustangs
I'm so glad you asked about the intake. I can't imagine Air Raid spends as much money and time designing theirs I've always wanted to ask a factory engineer that question.
Thanks
one of my favorite mustangs.
Engineer is so full of it. Plenty to do that can make the car better from factory. I gained 41 RWHP with a larger throttle body, intake and (with tune) and cat back exhaust on my 2014 GT. And yes, the car was dynoed before and after.
I agree with you but he is a Ford engineer bro, what else is he going to say lol
Danny D exactly. Pretty sure Ford Pefrormance parts offer a CAI ;-)
Some proof would be cool
What intake? CobraJet or Sniper?
salzero1 one thing about factory balance is part of a system. Better for him means things work together the Best. The factory runs federal emission test and endurance. Driveway mods are good guesses but no real test.
damn that thing looks like a beast!
If I lived somewhere where it doesn't snow 24:7 this would be in my garage. Not when an American muscle fan but this car is hard to resist.
Never seen any Jay Leno garage for the 1994 - 2004 Mustangs. So many cool stangs in that era.
Correction, Jay. Horsepower DOES solve everything. Just ask Jeremy Clarkson. "More power!"
Love my 2012 Boss and 7 litre 1966.
It's insane how the GT350 is so much better in just a couple of years.
Its insane how people talk without talking...
Jairo Mariscal not better looking though ! I hate the new bodystyle 😝
Dave giggled at the thought of aftermarket parts. Wow, the mustang has changed!
Great information in this vid. The best is debunking the aftermarket cold air intake myth. It has been proven with testing that with these modern performance vehicles you will not get any HP increase with aftermarket intakes.
Jay can get one of these for the price of an oil change on one of his exotics.
How can one not like this car ?
Plastic ford nothing new
there ar your local honda dealer
I’d take a Camaro zl1 over that ugly mustang any day! I own a 73 Mach 1 and a 2012 camaro Rs.
He mentioned u can't do better than stock air box lol...yeah right! I have a 15' gt & put a cold air intake on it...night & day difference 😏
+deadgameguns You're extra 10 horsepower is "night and day" difference. Forgive me if I have my doubts.
godofawesum223 ok night and day maybe a stretch lol
I always wondered if the aftermarket intake was better but you can honestly say you feel that it is better than the stock
definitely better than stock with that stupid sound tube lol...i put k&n system on mine...worth the money imo.
+deadgameguns he said on the Boss 302's not the standard GT's
I JUST BOUGHT A BOSS!!!!
Jay sounds like he’s about to pull out his wallet ..... again.
2015-2017 is a boss killing it :)
Nah, the fusion look no thanks
Jay love all your vids u make u are a true car guy .or well anything with a motor , love all your vintage bikes..
Love the Boss302, that coyote is a amazing power plant .remember the firsy coyote i drove i did an alignment on a 13gt with the track pack 373 , torsion diff and i was blown away , far cry from the 2v 03 i had , i had a 03 cobra that was a beast..but keep making these vids ..love them all..
ford should make a boss 429 & 351 like they did with the 302
Jake Krahn
They would if they haven’t sold out to the government putting V6 engines in the Ford Raptor
mewrongway
I hate this country
So much BS from the engineer that shift linkage and intake are better than any aftermarket option. I beg to differ that MGW race spec is quite much better than stock :D
So is my Barton with 2 post bracket, extremely close and strong as an ox. That being said, I hear the MGW is the best on the market now.
Don't change it if it works for you.
they just say that to protect their product, Aftermarket parts are always better then stock
Many aftermarket companies also copy-paste the designs from car to car without doing car specific research first. There are of course companies that really develop parts for cars and they can be good.
than
If the mustang, camaro, and challenger aren't muscle cars then that means they don't make muscle cars...
Otto von Chesterfield, Esquire
Well done. Good day to you, sir.
Otto von Chesterfield, Esquire I would consider this a sport car as it is intended for track racing not drag racing
It's not muscle cause it's ford
Wow! 4 exhaust pipes?? That's incredible!! No wonder, this machine sounds like, a Beast!
when i had my stock 1966 GTO from 1972 to 1974,i put on 750 double pump Holley, high lift cam,Hooker headers,it dynoed at 440 hp on the ground, fun car,got about 5 mpg on highway
....and further more Id rather be at his garage than the Playboy Mansion.... just saying
Chris Mahar You must be old like me....with low T.
Thanks, interestingly, me too......
So he's off on that one.
the shifter is definitely bs. mgw shifter feels 1000x better than stock.
"If aftermarket intakes did nothing, they wouldn't sell." Of course, that's why electric "turbos" sell like crazy on ebay without being able to generate a single horsepower.
Adrien Perié those are for idiots. with a tune you will see significant power gains with a cai over the factory air box.
I don't like the 4 exhaust.. go out the side or out the back, you don't need both, just extra weight...
gascat100
The Ford guy didn't get a chance to explain everything that happens when the "Track" key is used instead of the regular key.
one of the features using the track Program is the 'side exhausts' are opened, which allows free flowing exhaust. So in essence, you have a builtin "Tuner program" for the engine, exhausts, steering..." all adjustable from the factory computer. Remember he did say that using the performance mode key changes 300 different parameters on the car - oh, by the way - the factory warranty is voided too!
It gives the rear tires more heat for extra grip
It doesn't get any better!! Thanks Alan!!
it was impressive to see the way he closed the hood like that
The stuff about upgrades is absolutely not true!
What people dont understand after you open up the intake and exhaust good flowing intake heads become the limitation.
so you get 2 keys.. the white one is to keep at home on the dresser
I'd love to see a boss 302 vs a M3 gts both V8 with the same bhp 444
Ian Townsend Better the Laguna Seca for the GTS
Ian Townsend Not fair for the Mustang, it has a live rear axle, something Europeans last saw on horse and carriages...
The M3 would lap it fairly quickly.
The Mustang shines elsewhere, mostly on the bill...
pignonMZ6 I am pretty sure this boss 302 does not have a live rear axle - it's suspension is redone
Alexander Nevsky Nope, watch the video, you can see for yourself, they added HP and track suspensions, which is just silly, who wants to drive a very powerful bar of soap on a track, I'd rather have brain surgery...
Basically that car is a sexy dinosaur, like the overwhelming majority of the US production since 1970, not qualified to park in any European garage and that's truly sad.
pignonMZ6 oh ok, my mistake. I thought they MUST have put in independent rear suspension... otherwise this is just useless lol
I love Jays stock portfolio, nothing slower than 150 mph !
These are so rare now, and worth much more.
Such a special vehicle.
Everyone will want their hands on one 10 years from now, and it will cost them likely twice as much as MSRP was.
