The doubling of the exposure time is the LONG EXPOSURE NOISE REDUCTION. It can be turned off in the menu. What happens is the camera make a second exposure with the sensor blocked from any light. It then looks at the exposure with no light and maps the noise that the long exposure causes. Then it subtracts that phantom noise from the first exposure to yield a cleaner image.
