One of the most underrated camera channels on TH-cam. As always a great review, brings up pros and cons and some extra little nuggets of information and tips. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I really like that you spent a significant amount of time, using the camera in a variety of settings, prior to making this video. I think your review is more balanced and detailed, and more tailored to addressing the concerns of knowledgeable potential buyers, than the usual first-look reviews. I especially like the way you addressed the sort of GAS-induced frenzy about what is the “best” format, or whether this medium format system is somehow magically a sport photography tool as well. Great work!
Thanks Ben really appreciate the kind words. Wasn’t sure how some would take that part of the review when talking about medium format vs full frame but glad you picked up what I was trying to say. Thanks for also taking the time to watch the entire review. It’s a long one! Haha
I really enjoy your style of review and even just talking. Have never watched a review this long, but watched your review without even notice the time passing. Great review!
Great review. I am a GFX 50R user who is almost ready to upgrade. It was the 50R that convinced me these are great sensors, and they pick up fields of detail that full frame cannot. Pulls out an extra natural and subtle layer of detail. If ‘the subtle’ is part of a photographer’s vision, it is massaged by these sensors. Yes, 110mm is a difficult lens to use. The plane of focus at f2 is so slim, a moving subject falls out of focus in an instance. What a creamy envelope of movement around that focus. It composes an image that is unique to itself. Sure this is true of all fast lenses, but it will be hard to sell the 110mm to help pay for a new 100s.
Thanks Bobby for the most detailed, honest and thorough review of this GFX100S. This is THE review I was looking for: a long term user’s experience with this camera after 5 months of extensive use. Thank goodness there were no chart tests, sharpness tests 👍 (we all knew that from the 100). Instead, this review confirmed my very short hands on time with it (I only had 30 minutes with it and already pretty impressed, for someone coming from the X-T2 / X-T4). I make it my one year plan to save up as much as possible to try get this together with the 80 1.7. Thanks Bobby!
I’m happy it helped. Thanks for watching Ryan! Yes no charts lol! Not my style of review but I know some that like it. All the best on your future GFX100S acquisition 👍
Great review! I own the 100s as well as the 50r plus a bunch of X series bodies. I love the 100s but the body that speaks to me, and I love using even more than my 10 year old XT1 is the 50r. The rangefinder feel, the heft, the delicious sounding shutter…
I'd love for Fuji to give us a 60mp GFX body with an updated BSI sensor that has phase detect autofocus, pig pixel pitch, and lower noise. Give it the ability to shoot 4K video, and I'm a happy camper. I recently got the X-H2 and at 40mp I feel we're approaching the resolution need limits, but it's always nice to be able to crop some too. 600mb Tiff files seems ridiculous. I shot a senior portrait over the weekend with it, and yeah, get ready for retouching. I should have remembered my Pro Mist filter and used it. I shot with the sharpest lenses I own and have my work cut out for me.
"get the camera that speaks to your soul..." :)) didn't expect to hear that but that is so true. You def sold quite a few gfx100s right there hahaha great review
Thanks for this review! As a Fuji lover for many years (also using Sony for landscape and bird photography) I so much wanted to like the GFX 100S.I rented it for 4 weeks with gf 32-64, the new 80/1.7 and 110/2.The ergonomics are fantastic, the ibis very performant, but the autofocus still is too slow for my liking. The 110/2 is very exact however in AF but Medium format remains slow.In this way it was wrong from my side thinking that GFX could give a huge added value.I am convinced now it doesn’t!The files are gorgeous , but I have enough with cropping 50-60 Mpx files , even for landscape.I compared files of same scenery taken with my Sony a7R4 and the GFX 100S ,, and too be honest , the difference is quite small. In the end I decided not to throw myself into this system , mainly because AF is very critical as well , highly depending on the lens itself.I almost use AF-C for portraits all the time , and this works not as it should , especially not with the 80/1.7.I think Fuji did an enormous good job improving the MF system but I think that the added value is small compared with fullframe in general. But everyone has to decide this for himself.
For bird photography the medium format system is definitely not what you need, at least because of the focal length recalculation, plus autofocus and shooting speed, but for landscape to be honest, the difference between the a7r4 and gfx100s is very noticeable.
Haha, people asked you to slow down? Please don't. I actually started liking your channel because you speak a little faster. I watch most videos on 2x speed, but I watch you on 1.75x. Just be you, people can change their speed if they have a hard time. Some great shots btw.
hello, thanks for your work and your review. I understood that you have a mac with m1? Wich one exactly? It's a mac mini or ?Can you tell us what is your advice for mac setting for this raw files gfx and you said that capture one was a little bit longer thant LR? Is it still now the same in 2022 ? Thanks a lot from France
I'm an amateur photographer using a Canon DSLR and having fun with it, general non-video use. Is there any purpose in your mind for my having a GFX 100S ?
50MP seems like plenty for most people. 16bit color and improved noise performance from a bigger sensor are worthwhile benefits, but I don't see myself picking up the 100MP version. The storage would get crazy in a hurry.
Did you tried to convert the images in compressed DNGs? It might sound strange, but compressed DNG is a nice way, to reduce the file size to 1/3 of the original. The loss in quality is soooo minimal, you really have to search for it in 200%. I don't know if it's allready possible for the GFXs files, I just saw compressed DNG file from a GFX100 and thy look awesome.
I tried. What I was facing was this weird color cast from capture one when converting to DNG so I had to use TIF instead. Now that LR CC has the profile to the GFX100S, this helps me quite a bit
Couldn’t agree more about build, features and image quality. Coming from Nikon, the menus are giving me some headaches, but I’m figuring it out. Overall, a wonderful piece of kit.
Thanks for this great and balanced review ! I'm still a bit in the dark with the choice I've to make. I'm a landscape / astrophotographer guy who enjoys shooting while travelling. I don't do sport and for wildlife, I have an XT-3 with 100-400 (and TC x1.4 if needed) so that's covered (and it's also very light which is a huge bonus). I was wondering what to pick between a GFX100S or an A7r4. FF wise, i like the 15mm (astro or landscape), 35mm (everything, it's my togo) and 85-135mm (for portrait and sometimes landscape too) focals. Choosing is really hard because the FE mount has everything (14mm 1.4GM, 35mm 1.4GM and 85mm 1.4GM) i need whereas the GFX seems to lack (maybe using adaptators ?). But everytime I look upon some GFX sample images, my jaw drops. Price aside (I know I can have the Sony + 3 lens for around 7000€ whereas the GFX will be 12-13000), what would you do ? I know you don't shoot astro but do you think i'ts good for it with its 16bit and better ISO ? Obi-wan Kenobi, you're my only hope :)
Hi, I have some Hasselblad H series lenses and using them on GFX-100s saves a bit of money if I use the H to GF adapter. Down side, no autofocus. But I was wondering if you’d done that and what was it like using H lenses on the GFX-100s?
I've been shooting with Fuji for the last 4 years (and GH5 for video work at my previous job) and I have to say that I sometimes miss the FF look/characteristic. I also envy the versatility that third party brands offer on other systems (like Sigma or Tamron on Sony E). I'm looking at all the FF offerings but I'm also curious about a 50 Megapixel version of this GFX 100S (I was not a fan of the ergo of the 50R). So thank you for this really cool review, as usual. Some stunning shots, I really like the portrait at 18:48 and how you edit the one at 26:46 with Luminar. It seems fun I have to try it :)
Something you touch on that's worth emphasising, AF speed of 80mm is far slower than the 110mm. so much so that even on low speed drive mode, it'll slow down in frame rate using the 80mm lens, not the 110mm. Consequently, 80mm is not useful in continuous AF mode and because of it's low AF speed, not much of a general purpose lens.
For me I didn’t come across this many issues. Perhaps you may have had a bad copy of the lens. While he’s not superior to the 110 for AF and didn’t find the Continuous AF lacking much more than other GF lenses
Here's the deal, I'm a commercial photographer and in the film days we always used MF film cameras of course. Hassy etc. These days now it now it Fujifilm , Hassy , Phase One etc. Why because if you have client like P and G who have lots of shampoo products the clients wants to see every single strand of hair follicles at 100 percent. Having muddy hair is a no no. Hence more Mega Pixels the better.
You can says that, becouse You have got access to many different formats, different cameras and lenses. average fotografer have one or two cameras in one system. its strange to heare you have to feel the gear. how can i know whitch one is best for me?
Great review Bobby and thanks for putting this camera firmly on my wish list. ;-) I hear what you're saying about FF verses MF but resolution aside I have definitely noticed a more three dimensional quality to the images from the GFX system as opposed to full frame or APSC. Would you agree?
Thanks for watching. This is more dependent on lens to be honest. For example the Zeiss Otus will give you that dimensional quality and it’s a full frame lens. Actually it was designed for full frame to emulate MF. Having said that, there is a difference but as mentioned the average viewer won’t really know.
O had a play with one for a few days . I thought it was great (d850 user) but being a frequent visitor and climber up scotland in all weathers . Did you run into any overheating issues while shooting video (like the canon r5)? The move to a smaller body for this version has me worried about proper heat dissipation.
Does it track as good as a Canon 5D, or 5Dmkii??? If so then it’s good enough for even sport!!! Madness? Lol I used to take newspaper photos back on the good all film days 1fps lol
Maybe by a 24 mpix and spend money on lenses, that way all images have the same resulotion. Sounds wierd to have cropped images lynnig around, doesn't work for me.
How can you say “ you can not see medium format difference vs ff ”? Is that a joke? The tonality and compression is so different than FF cameras with GFX100. Once you start to editing the skin , you will see every detail and tonality on models face which you can not have with FF cameras. 16bit will help you to edit more flexible and compression is not problem if you export in Capture1 in correct way so Instagram won’t compress your file anymore. Yeah okay FF is the best , best in the world bla bla bla
Hi. I’ve answered you on Facebook. You have misunderstood what I said and have taken my points out of context. I’ve tested and reviewed most cameras on the market and the reality is in many cases it’s hard to see the difference. There are areas that you will notice and that’s where medium format shines.
What makes this a "consumer" grade camera and not a professional camera? 102 mp medium format for $6k with 200mb files of raw precise color data sounds professional to me? Is it a lack of studio capable interfacing? In my head professional grade means it's in the top 5% of cameras in terms of image quality and performance and can easily support a professionals workflow and produce professional grade photos that can be easily worked with in professional editing programs.
Dont shoot JPEGs, that's a terrible idea. If you want a smaller file size export a Tiff at the size you need from Capture One, ie 6000x6000, then they won't be monster sized tiffs and you can final edit in photoshop and then, only then save to JPEG for online use
"We are not sponsored but Fuji loaned me camera and lenses and these are my thought". So if I say bad things next time Fuji will not loan me the camera...
unfortunately Fuji still has AF issues FUJI FIX THEM really why ruin a good name FUJI AF is very bad X system also suffers by the Hand of the FUJI TEAM

My next purchase is a 24 tb RAID array cause of this. lol
Hahahahaha true words
File size for RAW image is not that bad. It is around 100MB lossless compression 16 bit
@@mike-bv2jc 117mb a bit less than sony a7r4 non compress raw
Who's your dentist?
Great!
What makes this a "consumer" grade camera and not a professional camera? 102 mp medium format for $6k with 200mb files of raw precise color data sounds professional to me? Is it a lack of studio capable interfacing? In my head professional grade means it's in the top 5% of cameras in terms of image quality and performance and can easily support a professionals workflow and produce professional grade photos that can be easily worked with in professional editing programs.
are you bored with it yet, sell it to me :( I have been waiting for ever LOL
Hahaha not bored with it at all
Dont shoot JPEGs, that's a terrible idea. If you want a smaller file size export a Tiff at the size you need from Capture One, ie 6000x6000, then they won't be monster sized tiffs and you can final edit in photoshop and then, only then save to JPEG for online use
Good video, thank you. We must however, stop calling long term reviews over gear we haven't spent our own money on, and owned for at least 6 months.
Thank you for slow down. 😂
😂 😂
Anyone that purchases a medium format camera (to date) for "sports" or "action" photography, most likely should close up business
Medium format is just better….
A lot of Fuji cameras are unfortunately too small for my big ass hands. They feel like toys.
The GFX doesn’t.
No way a 100S is going to feel small in your hands. It’s 5Dm4 size, easily.
Can’t you be a bit faster?
I hope the GFX50s has great AF... that's the one I'm waiting for.
Hope so too
Indice finger is on the trigger.🔫
du sprichst nicht zu schnell, die Anderen sind zu langsam!
Please talk faster
The only reason to get this is perfect 1:1 ratio shots
"We are not sponsored but Fuji loaned me camera and lenses and these are my thought". So if I say bad things next time Fuji will not loan me the camera...
Too much talking.
Take your mask off, Bobby...
unfortunately Fuji still has AF issues FUJI FIX THEM really why ruin a good name FUJI AF is very bad X system also suffers by the Hand of the FUJI TEAM
I kind of lost interest when I saw you using AI :D what's the point of photography if Good half of the image was created by computer..
You should not only wear a mask outside when you are alone and or in the shower. You should ask your governor for permission to buy it.
You talk fast. Like a machine gun! Not all Americans are your followers!!!
You perhaps need to slow down the video a bit on playback. Try it out, works wonders
