FUJIFILM'S BEST MID LENGTH LENS (GFX EDITION)

  • If I had to pick one lens to sit on my Fujifilm GFX system until the end of my career it would be this one. The Fujifilm GF 55mm F1.7 is magic but with so many lenses to choose from between the 45mm and 65mm range somebody had to rank them all in order. We discuss Autofocus speeds, size and weight, and quality across four of the current lens options for the medium format GFX mount and show images taken with each of them.
    The camera world is absolutely exploding lately. After the wildly successful launch of the new Fujifilm X100VI the attention of the photography community is on these systems and while the X cameras are remarkable it really is in the GFX Medium Format cameras that Fujifilm hides their very best tech. As a full time GFX photographer I've had the chance to test these cameras and all of the Fujifilm lenses for them out in the field and have come to a pretty rock solid conclusion.
    The GF55mm lens might just be the coolest lens on the market today. Across any brand. This video breaks down my view as to why I feel that way, shows actual images taken in different lighting scenarios with it and compares it to other lenses that I love as well as one that I don't.

    The 55 is on my list, can you tell how fast the AF is in comparison to the 45mm? I‘m a street photographer and I‘m thinking about replacing the 45mm in my camera bag cause the AF is not that fast.

    I have been in the GFX system now for about six months or so and I'm not a full-time wedding photographer. I do a lot of different photography. Everything from landscapes to weddings to Real Estate to products. I do a bit of everything. And I haven't got the 55 1.7 yet but it's definitely on my list. I'm currently saving for the new GFX100s ii and I'm really looking forward to that and then I'll get the 55 1.7.. Oddly I think I just clicked the subscribe button and I'm your 1000 follower congratulations. I was going to start a TH-cam channel myself but decided not to as I'm too busy. I don't shoot full-time but I have a well-paid day job and I do have a small Photography business which is going really well and I love Fiji film. I actually used to use the Nikon D850 and I love the feeling of that camera but it wasn't Mirrorless, now that I have a mirrorless camera no going back. Thanks for your video. I'm curious are you interested in the new GFX100s ii

      We’ve used the 110 since it was released and love it. I mention it in this video as well. It’s a great lens though I’m not a BIG lover of long lenses. It has its use for sure and allows us a little reach when we need it. We carry two of them in the kit!

    Thank you for having the balls to call the GF50 for what it is. A boring lens! I may be the only other person who shares your opinion on this. (Havent read your comments yet, but I'm hoping more people agree).
    Fun fact, I started out with the XT2 before going medium format - the GF50 was the ONLY lens I have sold. Ever. Across all systems.
    I wanted to love the lens so much. The lens does not have any magic. Well said.

    This was fun! I’ve been shooting medium format since my father gave me his WWII twin lens Rollei. Shot Pentax 67 & 645. I do mostly architecture so mirror less opens all kinds of doors.
    I also do portraits of family. I disagree with you about the 45. I think it is a great lens and somehow very diff from a 35mm on FF.
    Your channel interests me in part bc I have too much gear. I sold the 63 and bought and sold the 80mm.
    The 55mm sounds very interesting tho heavy.
    For my money the best GF lens is the 110mm. It’s the only lens I use that makes me think I am a great photographer. The rest are great but suggest I’m still in a learning stage.
    My least favorite is the gf 100-200. I use the canon EF 100-400. Very heavy. Some vignetting but. SHARP! Way sharp. And focuses to 36 inches.
    Again, fun delivery!!! Thanks

    Why so much hate on that little 50, lol? It does have pretty fast AF, and if you stop it down a little it works fine in the studio. But you're right: no real magic. Nothing like those 55 shots at medium distance you showed: interest sparked :-) If you talk about magic, my favorite is the 110. That thing is awesome (but not the most versatile of course). The 30 is a solid lens too, and it always delivers when I need extra wide, but not as magical as that 55. I have a feeling your video is going to cost me money, lol. Subbed though :-)

    • @mileswittboyer.photoco
      @mileswittboyer.photoco  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Haha. Just poking fun at the 50 because it’s small and can’t fight back. I do love the 110 a lot and for portrait work it’s incredible. Love the reach but it doesn’t get as much use out of my camera because I love to get close.

  • @robertgaskin1450

    The 55mm is all that you say it is and then some. The imgages I'm able to produce make it look like I might actually know what I'm doing. The caveat being I haven't worked up the courage yet to tell my wife that I spent over 10 grand on a new camera system....have a spare room?

  • @vha42
    @vha42 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I thought the 45mm where the one? At least its my favourite. Works great on the 50R and the 100.
    GFX : Yes its a bit expensive, but compared to Leica, its almost budget friendly ;) Since the 100 II came on the marked, the GFX 100 now can be bought at a more decent price, at least here in Norway .
    Back to the point : agree on the Speedmaster 65mm, had it, did not use it much, sold it. 1109 gram with filter and lens caps included.
    Thats quite some lug around.

  • @loriolus

    The 55 might be snappier than the 63 but it's still a slower to AF lens compared to som offerings like the 110 or the 45. Really like your review...though... too much belief in magic :)

      Ich besitze das 110 mm nicht, leider, würde dies gern ausprobieren. Das 55 mm hat aber inzwischen ein Update bekommen und ich kann selbst aus eigener Erfahrung sagen, dass vor dem Update, mit der 100 II, schon alles gut war. Das Beste, was ich in meiner 53-jährigen Fotografie besaß, einschließlich Kamera. Gutes Video und viel Glück im Leben.

    • @mileswittboyer.photoco
      @mileswittboyer.photoco  29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      So to be fair - there's a LOT of difference between a 50mm 3.5 and a 55mm 1.7. Those differences are much larger than just the difference in F Stop. The AF speed, size of the front element and the way it collects light, and even the unique perspective of the 55mm makes it simply a much more attractive piece of glass. The easy argument towards shooting faster glass like this isn't in being able to shoot it at 1.7 but rather that it is sharper at 3.5 because it isn't wide open to achieve that aperture. Again, as I stated, not a paid ad by Fujifilm and not compensated in any way. I bought my 55mm and simply love the lens. You're more than welcome to disagree!

      @@mileswittboyer.photoco Most lens traits are subjective, but one small correction - the GF 50 3.5 remains the fastest focusing lens from the entire GF lineup, the GF 55 1.7 didn't match those speeds. Otherwise, sure, all valid arguments.
