    Thanks for this useful video. Let me ask you a question. Do you focus on infinity when shooting landscapes? How can it be so sharp forward or backward at f:4.0 ?

    • @MikeBanom
      @MikeBanom 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      For rural-ish landscapes, I'd say I usually focus on the mid-ground (Is that a phrase?!) or if its something like a mountain or something I lock focus to the back which is most likely infinity. In these situations, again not urban stuff), it's usually pretty sharp throughout the entire photo. I did a video on going to Summit One in NYC, and actually from the top - even cityscapes are very sharp throughout. Both scenarios at f4. To be totally honest though, both scenarios aren't my usual thing I shoot, so take this a bit lightly.

    I asked myself the same question, in the end i choose the zoom simply because of flexibility, since both were at f4, in the end I never tried the prime one, but I’m glad I choose the zoom cause I’m mostly using around 30 hehe

    I similarly had to choose between the Sony FE 12-24/2.8 and the 14/1.8 too. Eventually decided to go with the 14/1.8 for the smaller size and faster f-stop, but would’ve been happy either way

      @ I brought both of them with me on a Japan trip. Used 12-24/2.8 most of the time, but at times the 14/1.8 did come in clutch too I think I would’ve been able to make do with either one of them, but it ultimately comes down to the good old ‘zoom vs prime’ debate

    I really was undecided at the start because in Australia there was no 20 to 35 lenses left. I couldn't get one anywhere and I was tempted to get to 23. I was lucky that I contacted Fujifilm Australia and they tracked one down for me. And I'm glad I got the 20 to 35. I'm not saying it's a better lens. It just gives you more versatility at 35 which is probably more like about 28. You can actually just shoot normal Photography with it even though it's big and bulky.. Yes you have to be mindful when you're shooting about your angles and your distortion. It comes back to how you set up and framed the shot. More than anything else. I found a cup of tricks in Lightroom where I've been able to do the distortion manually a little bit better than using auto but sometimes you have to just accept there will be some distortion and to roll with it and that's part of the art. It's definitely brilliant for landscape photography where you haven't got buildings. I think for cityscape Photography it would not be my choice of lens I would use. I would probably use the 35 to 70 and probably stitch two images together. Thanks for your video man. It's been ages. It's funny. I was watching the 80 to 110 cage match the other day as I'm undecided which one to get. I'll probably send you a DM mate to get some advice.

      @@MikeBanom I already told you in other videos, where you shot 3 dimensional objects to test lens or camera "sharpness". That simply does not work. As it doesn't in your video here. You are putting in a lot of effort, so it's sad to see your methodology is all wonky. You need to look for "Gletscherbruchtest", and do that. It's better than shooting a test chart too, at least for wide angle lenses, which often aren't optimised for close range, which a test chart is usually located at. If you still have the lenses, do a Gletscherbruchtest, and report those results.

      Awesome combo. 40mm equivalent is so good. Most natural compression for the eye. My Canon 40mm f2.8 is my favorite of the bunch and it's basically an exact equivalent of the GFX version. For primes, I find it better be a normal lens, or a niche use case I plan for like portrait or wildlife. I don't tend to like wide angles, even for landscape, but maybe I'll come around on that. But the more lenses I carry, the fewer I seem to use. Two is the most I seem to swap back and forth between, often a 24-105 or 150-600 and the 40mm.

    If I was forced to buy a 5th gen camera I'd have to pick the XH2/2S over the T5, even though I hate the useless selfie screen. The second you place a real flash on top of the T5 and add one of the pro lenses the meager grip becomes a cramped nightmare (flashes/lighting are usually ignored in discussions of camera performance and ergonomics). A $125 grip add-on is also silly and not enough at all for pros - Fuji, bring back the GRIP! An XT-6 with the guts of an H2 and upgraded build quality would be my preferred setup at this time, probably. It would be relatively easy to take the "custom modes" off the wheel and put them into the Q menu that is pretty quick to access. Heck, I'd like 7 setups for camera settings, and 7 for film sims, since I change those quite a bit.

    • @MikeBanom
      @MikeBanom 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      For me, that flip out screen for photo is a deal breaker. If I didn't go GFX, i'd wait years like I did when the 2015 macbook came out. Refused to buy it, finally got a new one in 2020 LOL. Interesting point though - would the grip really make things that cramped? I think it'd be the same body as the XH2 more or less with a grip no? I think the XT6 and XH3/s need to have the same screen as the A7R5. Flip out and 3 way articulation. It'd be awesome!

    • @matt88169
      @matt88169 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@MikeBanom My point was that the XT series cameras for years had vertical grip options, and Fuji dumped them for the X-T5 claiming "poor sales" (Ok). I have one on my X-T3 and it makes using red badge lenses/on camera flash way more comfortable, not to mention it means all-day shooting is possible (though, given the shutter placement etc, it is still not ergonomically perfect). Without that option, the X-T5 was an automatic no-go for me. The super power of the X-T3 is that it is small enough to serve as a great "walk around" camera but, once gripped, is basically ready for pro work because big lenses and flashes feel better balanced. All that said, an XH2 with no grip appeals to me because it would be a little smaller than my current (gripped) setup, with a much better battery. I might even be able to get by without a grip, in that sense saving some money. But I'd hate the flip out screen. The tilt-screen is where its at for me, and yes, the A7R5 screen is what every camera now MUST have!

  • @matt88169
    @matt88169 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I appreciate the detailed review - and 100% this is exactly the body/lens setups I'd want for both cameras. Yup, all else equal, larger sensor/more megapixels is better than smaller sensor/less megapixels. XH2 is a very strong performer, but I'd like to see Fuji speed up the ES performance to 20 fps with no crop / less rolling shutter. They'd probably have to stack it, but as it stands, I think the ES performance was the biggest letdown of the new sensor. When the GFX can hit about 10fps with little/no compromises I will likely have to go all-in. BTW - how did you find the AF of the 110 vs. the 56/50-140 on the Fuji? I'm praying that Fuji will eventually release a portrait stunner like the 56mm, but with super fast AF motors (the 90mm is too long for indoor work, really, I like the versatility of an 85mm-equivalent).

    • @MikeBanom
      @MikeBanom 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The GF110 is on the slower side of AF. XF50-140 is pretty fast! I havent used it a ton with the XH2 but naturally out of the 3 you listed, it is def the fastest. I found the XF56 gen 2 kind of slow. But it makes sense being a 1.2 portrait lens. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment!

      @@MikeBanom NP - I'll have to edit my comment since I made a few errors in it - but kudos for understanding what I was asking! The GF 55 f1.7 is my "new standard", as they call it. But the AF, while better than the GF80, is far from the speed of the GF50. For that reason alone, I still keep the GF50 and sometimes use it over the 55mm. I wish the GF55 had the AF speed of the GF50. I own the GF 23, 50, 55, 80, 120, 100-200. Just switching from sony 7r… bodies and ton of lenses to gfx system - thinking of getting the 20-35(or 23 because its more than half the price used…) then the 55 and the 110 - with the 55/110 combo i dont see a real need for the 45/32-64/80/45-100 …. Maybe a bit later the 250mm and for Africa trips the new 500mm - quite hard to get a good gfx setup because with sony you have sooooo many options 😉 - I‘m also switching because I too much stuff and when travelling my luggage is full of camera gear… only lens i really miss in the gfx lineup something like a fast wideangle maybe a 20 2.8 or even more open for milkyway shots - dont always want to bring a star tracker with me - just subscribed great channel thanks for honest reviews!!1

      We're very much on the same page! Check out the video I did talking about the lenses in my kit. We're very aligned! One thing that is kind of fun with Fuji is being restricted. It makes decisions easy. If you want midrange, easy. GF55. That lens eliminated the 45, 50 and 63. Not necessarily, but IMO it did. Then the 110 is superior to the 80 IMO. wide? Well the 20-35 is better than the 23mm in terms of IQ. anyway, IMO you're spot on.

    14:30 - Gfx @ ISO100, H2 @ ISO400? No wonder the smaller one looks so much noisier... What did I miss? In terms of DR, 5 raising shadows by 5 stops is never needed really. I mean potentially sure. Depending on what final resolution you need. But I upgraded to the GFX to have more resolution for product shots. I recently did a watch shoot and I thought the XH2+XF80 would be just as good as I could get closer with the XF80 vs GF120. But in reality even cropping heavy, the XF files are really no where near the quality of the GFX. Beyond resolution too. Color and all. So I won't say there isnt a specific use where using the XF would be better or maybe you have a cheap project and you dont want to use the GFX, but for me, I'd pretty much always use the GFX.

      Walking yes. With a manual lens. Not playing. Definitely not running. That’s for an old school highly skilled specialist. But I was talking about the dude sitting in a chair with a smoke machine chugging away. You measure from the focal plane to his eye, set the lens and leave it. You’re not shooting wide open so he can move a few inches and still be fine. The focus depth doesn’t change. And shot at a reasonable aperture he can shift quite a lot. 5.6 is handy. How do you think they’ve shot movies for over a century?? Now they have laser guided focus pulling rigs but many many movies are made with a human focus puller and a monitor or in the past, pre-measured marks in the floor and a puller with the eyes of a god. Autofocus is way overused and frankly, a crutch for many. The focus features on my 5D Mk IV are pretty basic and I rarely missed shooting bicycle racing, my dogs and events. I would like a Sony FF as a second camera for the Fuji GFX 100S II I’m about to order. The canon has a wonky dial that’s not worth fixing. A proper global shutter camera would be awesome if I were returning to production work but my back won’t take holding a gimbal, etc. and as a portrait photographer that A9 is kind of a dog. I love autofocus for photographing sports. For dogs and kids playing and events where speed is essential. Video cameras don’t need it for action because of back focus and even for events you can zoom and focus by hand. That’s why people should use actual video cameras with zoom buttons like they use for news for event work. Modern Hybrid cameras are cinema cameras for prepared productions. They’re not the best tool for a wedding or street. And modern video cameras don’t weigh 35lbs anymore!

      My Canon is ailing and my preference for replacement is the GFXs II. But. I am heavily invested in Canon lenses, speed lights and Paul Buff lights. The Canon stuff I can sell and the studio lights are universal. But I need an outdoor moonlight with HSS. Buff don’t have their HUB hss transmitter in a Fuji version. Another (much more $$$) option is a Profoto B10X or similar and again, no Fuji transmitter. They do have an on camera flash that (I think?) has a Fuji transmitter. Lighting gear is a problem for the Fuji brand. Though to be fair the same problem exists for my alternate choice, a used Leica. Did I miss an obvious option?

    I bought my original GFX camera as a 2nd hand in the bundle with GF 32-64/4. But primarily I use it with adapted Sigmas 14-24/2.8, 40/1.4 and 105/1.4. The zoom needs some cropping but even though it provides crazy wide FoV and surprising amount of details. Sharp enough across the frame when stopped down to f/5.6 but still very usable at f/2.8 in the central 60-70% of the frame. The 40/1.4 is a true diamond. On a FF camera it is crazy sharp right from wide opened. On the 100Mpix GFX it is still very sharp wide opened (on par with GF 32-64 !!!) and crazy sharp from f/2 on. It has excellent microcontrast and so beautiful an unique rendering! The 105/1.4 is less sharp wide opened (still comfortably usable) but it only applies for looking at 100% magnification on a monitor. From f/2 on it is very sharp. The look it gives wide opened in a MF camera for full body or small group portraits is soooo appealing! And the quality of the bokeh of both primes is just staggering - soft, mild, with very natural transition from sharp to blurred. Both primes do cover the whole image circle of the 44x33mm sensor but of course with some vignetting. I do not see it as an issue since I like some amount of vignetting in the wide aperture shots and also because the exposure latitude of the GFX is so big that even some 2 EV corner correction does not downgrade the IQ at all. Personally I do not see any relevant reason to buy Fuji GF primes since those Sigmas are so damn good :-)!. Their build quality is also very good - all metal, weather sealed, put together like a tank, smooth comfortably damped zoom and focus rings... IQ is fantastic. And the ridiculously low price is very welcomed bonus on the top.
