Cheers sir. This was the final video I needed to see about whether I should upgrade from the 100s to 100s ii. I’ve just saved a couple of grand. Thanks boss.
Same things are happening with xh2s apsc sensor. I dont think its a lens issue because of the big elements. I think the issue its in the camera. Great video btw!
I upgraded from the 50S ii to the 100s ii and that was a significant improvement, but I think the 100s kind of sits in between but I've done a corporate shoot the other day which was just people walking towards me and I were quite a distance away just with the 35 to 70 kit lens and the auto focus was really good on the new camera I think I took about 25 shots and 22 of them nailed focus. I wonder if it's around the pet detec, the lower heat rate is probably more to do with the AI of the autofics. I think it was a really really good video which I've finished watching and you were very fair. To be honest even with a new camera maybe in a years time I don't know if the auto focus will get much better. You are dealing with medium format and a huge shutter and big amounts of glass so the mathematics tells me that we are probably not gonna see much of any improvement on what we've got and you have to make that camera work, I'm wondering did you use continuous or single shot because I found my results to be better with single shot than using continuous. Great video mate!! And great Dog mate LEGEND. I really wasn't sure about GFX as a whole when I first got into it as I leaked. I just wanted the better dynamic range which I really loved the XT5 but missed the dynamic range of full frame and that's kind of how I ended up in GFX but once you accept the fact that it does have some drawbacks the image quality for me outweigh the fact that you might miss some shots. Yes in certain scenarios you are going to need to overshoot and that's just the reality of that system and I know people will bang on and say it's should be better well I'm sorry but it's medium format huge glass and huge amount of megapixels I think the camera and I'm talking about the new one does an incredible job.
Vuelvo y lo repito, eres el mejor ! Haciendo estos videos, la mayoria pone su cara y no muestra ni una foto o video. No te olvides del vídeo es muy inportante!
Thanks for the interesting comparison! I share your view, the new model is evolution and not revolution. As you said, medium format is most at home with slow paced photography and there the original 100s will do almost as well. And the image quality out of this sensor remains unsurpassed by any full-frame model till date. I too will enjoy my GFX100s some time more!
Thx for this great video! I am in the same ballpark. I own a GFX 100s and found myself looking at the new Mark 2. And to be honest at first I thought that was your fault. The GF 55mm is not the fastest af lens. But then I saw the results with your GF 110mm R LM WR. It got a "LM" linearmotor. But this one can't get a walking dog in focus too. And a walking dog is nothing special. Therefore I think I will keep my GFX 100s. For landscape, architecture, fine-art, ... maybe on the same level like a GFX 100s II. Have a nice day
Thanks for watching! Yeah. Unless you have a need for AF, I don’t think this is a crucial update for both of us! Also I didn’t get a chance to test the gf20-35 for AF. But it wasn’t really the look I wanted, and I knew the 110 was pretty fast. I think the 55 was honestly faster for pets vs the 110
100% with you on pet photog hit rate boost - I switched from Fuji X-T4 (no animal eye AF) to Sony A7R5 (with AI animal eye AF) a couple of years ago and had a similar take My AF hit rate for my manic, hyper energetic beagle shockingly went from 20-30% to 70-80% and I’ve never looked back since
I think Fuji's main problem with autofocus of moving subjects is that it doesn't seem to account for the time lag associated with pressing the shutter. It really needs to be able to estimate what this time lag will be and judge the change in focus position as it tracks a subject to predict where the subject is most likely going to be in the near future after the lag is accounted for. Then it needs to focus ahead of the subject so that when the photo is actually taken they are in focus at that moment. The 100s II and 100 II are better than the 100s in that they are better at tracking the subject. But they still do not lead the subject so they suffer from the same fundamental performance limitation. The only way to improve performance in a meaningful way is to fundamentally use a more advanced method of choosing the focus point. Unfortunately it seems they are not able to do this. So while the chip upgrade and processing speed improvement enables a major AF enhancement, the focusing algorithm does not.
@@MikeBanom It probably could but it sounds extremely difficult to develop. The gfx can’t even focus on a fixed subject during video while mounted on a tripod without hunting back and forth constantly. The 80mm lens is horrible at this. I think this problem could by solved by introducing a dead zone which is a range where if the focus is close enough it won’t try to make an adjustment. That way instead of making tiny adjustment that it overshoots and has to correct back and forth constantly, it could just let the image go slightly out of focus as it remains still. Better AF for stills would be such a big improvement that they would probably release it in their next camera or the one after that. The video hunting fix should be done via firmware though. I consider it a bug. I’m just speculating on why AF is so bad too. For subjects coming towards me it seems to always focus behind them so that’s why I think it’s time lag related. If it could figure out how to focus a little bit in front of where it thinks it should then it could compensate and nail it. It’s extremely difficult because it would need to constantly judge out of focus information so it can stay in front of the motion. So I definitely have empathy for Fuji. But their inability to solve this problem is why a lot of people chose Sony even though they really want med format.
As soon as things start moving, Fuji AF system is hopeless. it's just hilarious how may shots you have to fire just to get one in focus shot. and this is the " improved AF " version makes it even more hilarious.
@@MikeBanom i know, i totally understand, but just still difficult to adjust the mindset and expectation for some one came from and still mainly shooting with good FF like Z9 and A1.
@@dannyli9424 100% agreed. It really just depends on what you shoot. If you can get away with not needing AF pretty much, using a GFX will get you the best image quality. But it all depends.
Yes! Ugh. I kept forgetting to mention this. But honestly, it didn’t really seem like an update in any way for at least how I used it. Typically when I do long exposures on the street or do studio I zoom in, and via the EVF felt exactly like my 100s. I was pretty disappointed.
@@MikeBanom I think EVF should be a very high priority. Having a low res EVF on High Res Camera just makes no sense to me. But I know many younger photographers shoot via the back screen. Im old school , and sad to see that no one chose to develop a hybrid View finder. Having both a mirror and a EVF would have been soooo nice
@@egestroem Perfectly said! I always end up using the EVF when i want to really check anything serious - just seems like a natural thing for me. So yeah, if the EVF was way higher quality it would have been a harder decision for me to make!
Walking yes. With a manual lens. Not playing. Definitely not running. That’s for an old school highly skilled specialist. But I was talking about the dude sitting in a chair with a smoke machine chugging away. You measure from the focal plane to his eye, set the lens and leave it. You’re not shooting wide open so he can move a few inches and still be fine. The focus depth doesn’t change. And shot at a reasonable aperture he can shift quite a lot. 5.6 is handy. How do you think they’ve shot movies for over a century?? Now they have laser guided focus pulling rigs but many many movies are made with a human focus puller and a monitor or in the past, pre-measured marks in the floor and a puller with the eyes of a god. Autofocus is way overused and frankly, a crutch for many. The focus features on my 5D Mk IV are pretty basic and I rarely missed shooting bicycle racing, my dogs and events. I would like a Sony FF as a second camera for the Fuji GFX 100S II I’m about to order. The canon has a wonky dial that’s not worth fixing. A proper global shutter camera would be awesome if I were returning to production work but my back won’t take holding a gimbal, etc. and as a portrait photographer that A9 is kind of a dog. I love autofocus for photographing sports. For dogs and kids playing and events where speed is essential. Video cameras don’t need it for action because of back focus and even for events you can zoom and focus by hand. That’s why people should use actual video cameras with zoom buttons like they use for news for event work. Modern Hybrid cameras are cinema cameras for prepared productions. They’re not the best tool for a wedding or street. And modern video cameras don’t weigh 35lbs anymore!
