Yes. Imagine Nintendo releasing the N64 without Mario 64. That never would have happened. Come Hell or high water, Nintendo would have had a Mario game ready at launch or they wouldn't have released the console at all.
@Brian Babin Yeah, and the best selling Panzer Dragoon games never sold a fraction of what the worst selling Sonic games sold. There's more to Nintendo than Mario, too, but Nintendo know enough to release a Mario game for every console because they're not mentally retarded like Sega were.
32x and cd got in the way…wish i even knew what the saturn was at the time. If they hadnt spread themselves so thin maybe the saturn would have done better. Maybe not.
I suppose it really would've sold way better. Sega was already distrusted because of the add-on failures and they had to rush Saturn launch, which made it complex and hard to develop for. If they didn't waste time on those 2 add-ons the story would have been completely different for the Saturn, in many ways.
I feel the failure and under utilization of game developing of the sega cd caused sega to create the 32x. Also, competing with pc engine super cd which led sega to rush in and release the sega cd. All of those resource would have been better if they focus on the Saturn, prior to it get into cd pc and interactive media by releasing publish/1st party games there, and solving the game gear battery issue.
Except that they didn't. Sonic Adventure was rife with camera issues. I played it and was turned off by the wonky camera. Sonic Heroes, too. The camera in that game was no better. Sonic just doesn't translate well to 3D. It should have stayed a 2D side-scroller. Look at Sonic Mania, where they got it RIGHT. That's what Sonic X-Treme should have been.

How about you make the Sega Saturn backwards compatible with the Sega Genesis (through the Saturn cartridge port) so that Sega fans could continue enjoying their Genesis classics along with the newer Saturn stuff? The 32x didn't need to exist. :p
Yeah, they'd have been so much better off skipping the 32X. The 32X games could (and should) have either been chip-enhanced Genesis games or early Saturn games.
@@macgyver6999 Without the 32X and focusing more on the Saturn they could have put more effort into Saturn Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing. Although, they'd have to not pull the "surprise launch" stunt as well.

The 32X sold really, really well at first. Timing is what killed it. Everybody knew the Saturn and PlayStation were coming, and the 32X, Jaguar, and 3DO all looked like shit next to them. Then the Saturn surprise launch was the final nail in the coffin for 32X, coming within 6 months of the 32X launch. I don't think a true Sonic game would have helped it much, but if it were ported to the Saturn simultaneously or soon after, it would have helped the Saturn quite a lot.
Plus, sega already had the sega cd add-on. Sega wasted time developing the mars project and should've moved over to the Saturn after experimenting the project with the genesis.
@@maroon9273 What Sega should have done was include Sega of America in the design of the Sega CD, because they would have been able to make it display more colors like the 32X does and it would have rendered the 32X moot. SOJ just designed the Sega CD themselves and then dumped it on SOA and told them to release it with only a couple games ready. Had they connected the proper pins from the VDP and the CPU in the Genesis in the first place, they could have doubled VRAM, doubled the color count and background layers, matched the SNES color palette and eliminated the need for a second CPU, which would have let them launch at $199 as originally intended. A Sega CD at $199 would have sold gangbusters. Barring all that, what they could have done instead of wasting time on the 32X is design a Genesis in a cart for the Sega Saturn, which SOA were working on at some point. All it would do is plug into the Saturn cart slot with its own slot on the top for Genesis cartridges, much like a Lock-On cart. You plug your Genesis games in and the commands from your Saturn controller pass through to it. The audio and video signals pass through the pins in the Saturn cart slot and the Saturn relays them to your TV screen. It would have solved the Saturn's lack of backward compatibility in a cart that probably would have cost no more than $80 by 1996. By January 1996 Sega had cut the cost of the Saturn to $299, so for less than the cost of the Saturn on launch day 1995, you could have had a Saturn AND Genesis in one console. and you would have had a library several times the size of the PlayStation library. It's too bad SOJ didn't give a rip about BC just because the Mega Drive sold poorly in their region.
@@madhatter8508 true, if soj told soa about developing the sega cd, the add on hardware would have been much better. Same for the sega Saturn.
