I’m much more a Sega Saturn fan. The arcade ports, fighting games, and overlooked gems are all fantastic. Too many interesting gems never made it out of Japan unfortunately. Famous PlayStation titles are much more accessible and you can buy many of them on other systems. Saturn has a lot more titles you just can’t buy anymore anywhere at least at a price that won’t drive you crazy.

To be honest, the Saturn might probably have been the best console in its era. But it's also one of the first times Sega made one of its historical mistakes. This being the undocumented transparency effects for the software. Only very few ever figured it out, many developers quoted the Saturn was difficult to work on... The cause being the limited documented devkits.

I bought a Saturn the surprise day it came out here in the states. May something 1995. I had no business buying a $400 console and expensive games at the time (age 20 college student taking a semester off due to lack of tuition funds). But I did it anyway. Daytona, VF, Bug, Clockwork Knight, Panzer Dragoon. Not the best lineup but most were quite fun in their own way. I remember the free VF Remix disc. And then there was VF2. And lots of other great games.
How times change. I'm 48 now and even with 28 years of inflation I'm now pretty shy about spending $400 on anything I don't have to. Real world bills and some day retirement...

Back then though It felt like a losing cause especially when sega saturn collapsed. If you invest on a console that was at the near end then why go for it? It is not a smart logical decision to make. As for me, I went from SNES to PS1 to Xbox. No regrets here especially since I love the Halo games (Halo, Halo 2 and Halo 3). My K/D online in multiplayer was 1.04 in Halo 2. Halo 3- 1.46 (Isolation map 1.91). Halo 4- 1.66 and Halo 5 - 1.87.

On paper the Saturn is superior to the Playstation but what truly made it fail was the games. Third party support was scarce and Sega made a big mistake by not making follow ups of its most popular games. No Sonic 4, no Streets Of Rage, Golden Axe, Shinobi, Outrun, Hang On and so many others. Another problem was the short gameplay of some games. For example, Sega Rally had 4 tracks, 3 cars and that was it. Sega also kinda disliked RPGs and kept pushing for somewhat average 3D games just to compete with the Playstation.

Had Sega resolve these issues before launching the console. The saturn would've been better performing console than the ps1.

Here in the USA almost no one had a Saturn. Everyone I knew had a PlayStation or later a Nintendo 64. No one cared about the Saturn and the Dreamcast a great system lost out because of that here. Not that Saturn was a bad system. It cost too much and did not have enough games on it. They had to sell it with 3 free games you get to choose to get it to sell at a big loose and still did not. What hurt them most was there were not enough 3D games and the few that there were, were not well-made and glitchy. In Japan, it sold better then the PlayStation and did a bit better in Europe than the USA. After Sega CD and then 32X I and many here lost all interest in Sega. I dont think final fantasy was the reason why sony won. For my friends & I the main reason was the MOD CHIP. Being able to copy games and spread it around with friends was the main reason we all got ps1 & ps2. For a non- working high school student it was impossible to afford to buy games at the shop. But for the price of a blank cd/dvd $1 or $2 you could own those games.

SegaSaturn dominance is clear from 1994 to 1997. PlayStation became successful when Dreamcast arrived. Maybe that Sega should have delayed the release of the Dreamcast in Japan because the SegaSaturn was still a success in 1998.

I'm a Sega Saturn stan. I still sing it's praise to this day, they just didn't get enough proper game licensing of the major titles. I remember Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy 7 coming out and in a magazine they said the exclusivity of those popular titles helped Playstation leap ahead. It's possibly cutural, but Japanese launch games are just plain weird compared to what we had. I can't remember the Saturn's but the PlayStation's were: Ridge Racer, Destruction Derby, Battle Arena Toshinden, Lemmings 3D, Tekken, Cyber Sled, Air Combat and Wipeout. These were available at launch, as in the first week we saw plenty of others. In fact the reason some games had the double CD case, was because there wasn't enough of the Sony specific cases to meet sales.
