    If that 1080 is anything like my 1100 the fuel tank on the side and use two group 31 truck batteries. Nothing makes me happier than an old not running machine running again without a engine rebuild.

    Not a 318 fan, but they do sound good when they run. Each cylinder is 1.25 litres, more capacity than a lot of modern cars. Lovely to hear it running. I can't bring myself to part it now, it's joining the collection. 😊

      Chamberlain put a Perkins 306 motor in the ‘306’ a 6 cylinder 70 hp tractor and they were a very good smooth running motor that sounded wonderful. Essentially a small bore 354. The 4/270D motor in the model before (the 9G) was the only wet sleeve Perkins I know of and the sleeves gave trouble when they got old but only because of no coolant which no one had heard of then. I don’t think to many 318s or 300s ever came here. Jeff

      I bought it as a parts donor, but after a couple of days it had grown on me enough that I realized that it wasn't going anywhere, so I started loading up the parts canon 🙂.
      Even if it had turned out to be dead I would have found a 300 out of a combine and rebuilt it.

    My dad bought a 1080 back in the early 70's , I was spreading dung with a side slinger and came around a corner in the yard far too fast and skidded into a mass concrete gate pier , ripped the front axel out from under her and made shit out of everything from the engine forward she was a sorry looking sight but in my defence I was only 9 at the time , that was the end of our 1080 the father traded her for a leyland 2100 which we had a succession of over the next ten years and did a trogan amount of work with them. Funally enough I now have 3 Massey's in the fleet.

    Nice one Mucker👍 I had faith it would go. Jesus Christ, people still worried about using ether. My friends old John Deere has a can of it fitted as standard from the factory for cold starts. A little squirt hurts nothing. It's better when they just start straight up without turning over the starter motor excessively.

    • @ClarenceFudWeasel
      @ClarenceFudWeasel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    We had a 1080 bought new on the farm. Can confirm she had both head and cylinder issues. Did the cylinders once and head twice. It was a decent tractor though. My uncle loved it, he was left handed and the key switch and some other controls were down by your left foot.
    She spent a lot of hours on the manure pump. Traded her off with around 11,000 hours.

      Last tractor my family owned that had ether start [Ki-Gas] was a MF35 four cylinder diesel. You know the ones. They were red with a gold chassis rather than Ferguson Grey.
      I had a demo of a John Deere 4040S [I think it was] with the Sound Gard cab and full powershift at some time in the early 1980’s and it had ether start from the factory utilising an aerosol can of John Deere starting fluid in a purpose built holder.

    • @philhawley1219
      @philhawley1219 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The JD4040 had a button on the dashboard perfectly placed to knock when getting in and out giving a lovely blast of gas in a hot engine, and strong language from the boss. I took the aerosol can off in summer to stop this.

    on the farm I worked on many moons ago we had both Massey and Ford Tractors , the 698 and 399 Massey`s were so under powered compared to the 7710 7610 and 8200 Fords we had , I remember during straw carting with the 8200 pulling a fully loaded 40ft trailer of round bales like it was nothing ! I tried pulling the same load with the 399 Massey and I could have sat there had cup a tea and a sandwich and it just might have moved a little bit by the time Id finished !

    The 1080 and its successor the 595 promised so much but from personal experience I have to observe that if worked, everything that possibly can fail, will fail and sooner rather than later. The A4.318 is a lovely engine when it works. The trouble is that it was/is so prone to head gasket failure that its not funny. It’s not a structural [stressed] block engine with a structural sump, well not to the extent that other Perkins engines are in tractors, hence the deep rails connecting the bolster to the bell housing.
    Then there were steering issues, clutch, PTO clutch, gearbox, auxiliary hydraulic pump issues and so on in a never-ending list of woes. The brakes on the 1080 are dry ones if I remember correctly, which was one worthwhile change they made with the 595 which has wet brakes.

    These are certainly Beauvais built tractors. British engine unfortunately. Probably the worse engine Perkins ever made. In the 595, even the MkI, MF had an ‘official’ Opico turbo kit for it which didn’t seem to make the engine any less reliable than it already was.
    Having said all that, these models of tractors are becoming real classics now. They are quite rare because so many have been scrapped.

    • @ClarenceFudWeasel
      @ClarenceFudWeasel 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should be a Beauvais built tractor, but there are a lot of things on it that suggest that it was Detroit built and Beauvais badged. We will see.

    Should also add that I started my old AJS on ether a couple of times and now when I go to the garage I find that bike surrounded by empty Easi Start cans and leaning over haphazardly on its side stand. Not sure you can discount the addiction thing.

    • @ClarenceFudWeasel
      @ClarenceFudWeasel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can discount it completely. If ether is mis-used, it can damage an engine, but if it is used normally, it will not cause any problems. If an engine habitually requires it, there's an underlying problem with compression, valves, leakage or all of the above. It's that simple.
