The most poignant of Hawaiian songs when one knows what it references and the story. Strong. I saw a whole performance of it headed up by Ike Lee in the 70's. It was amazing. The song still is.

Personally, I am in total support for the Hawai'ian indigenous in reclaiming their beloved land and monarchy. I accept it even if it means that I must leave for any reason. I am, as it is said, to take only memories and leave only footprints.
Understanding and respecting the various cultures is imperative in living in an international world. Without respect, the only thing that comes about is hatred, confusion, and war.
    Peace to all.

This was the first song I heard when I landed on the beautiful Oahu just over a couple of weeks ago. Only now that I returned home I found the true meaning of it and it breaks my heart. I hope the people of Hawaii get their lands back. My country was under foreign rule for over a 1000 years before it gained independence.
Mahalo for the beautiful memories 🌺🌺🌺

That is true aloha! However, the constitution of the kingdom of Hawai'i at the time of the overthrow was not about bloodlines. It was about loyalty to the kingdom.

Famous are the children of Hawai`i
    Ever loyal to the land
    When the evil-hearted messenger comes
With his greedy document of extortion
    Hawai`i, land of Keawe answers
    Pi`ilani's bays help
    Mano's Kaua`i lends support
And so do the sands of Kakuhihewa
No one will fix a signature
To the paper of the enemy
    With its sin of annexation
And sale of native civil rights
    We do not value
    The government's sums of money
We are satisfied with the stones
    Astonishing food of the land
    We back Lili`ulani
Who has won the rights of the land
    She will be crowned again
    Tell the story
Of the people who love their land

With all due respect to the Queen of Hawai'i and my
kanaka cousins, I hv often wondered why the Queen, knowing how duplicitous the white man
was/is, never called for an uprising against the usurper of her legal authority. I can only surmise that she trusted too much and, as a Christian, was against the shedding the blood of her people.
Seeing Hawai'I today, I wonder if she would now act differently.
    Me te arohanui no Aotearoa.
    Kia kaha te po'e!

    • @candlewax2587
      @candlewax2587 2 ปีที่แล้ว

One of the monarchs before Lili’uokalani (Kalākaua) was held at gunpoint and forced to sign a paper that gave most of his power and anyone following him to those same duplicitous white men. The Queen did, in fact, fight back in many ways. However, she was imprisoned illegally after just 2 years of reigning over the islands.
