    This is the "Stone Eating" song of protest, which was written by Eleanor Prendergast in 1893. It is also known as Mele Aloha Aina, the "Patriot's Song" and is still popular in Hawaii today, although it is not clear how many non-Hawaiian speaking listeners are aware of the song's historical significance or the profound antipathy to U.S. annexation in its lyrics. Queen Lili'uokalani wanted to reverse the "Bayonet Constitution" that her brother, KIng Kalakaua, was forced to sign. In other words, she wanted to restore the voting rights to our Hawaiian people and to also restore power to the Hawaiian monarchy. In that process, she made many enemies, especially those who had political control and power. Many plantation owners, who were mostly haole, had political power at that time and that is how the Committee of Safety (13 members) was formed. The Committee of Safety forced the abdication of Queen Lili'uokalani. That is the historical background regarding this song. Any comments or questions are always welcomed. Armando Sierra

      How I found out that this was a protest song was when a group sang this song where each verse was followed by an English translation. Does anyone know the name of the group? It was very powerful!

    I cannot comprehend who are the 343 people who dislike this heavenly hymn. I am Greek born and raised and proud to be one. But Hawai'i shook me to the core. Profoundly affected, humbled, and in love with that aina. I am not a Hawaiian, but I am a child of this earth, so there's love to and from any place I walk on. Mahalo 🙏🏻

    Hawaii was the first place I was stationed after I joined the Air Force. Best 3 years of my life. I loved it there. The food, people, music, culture etc. I made some life long friends there. I was there in 1997-1999 and I know I could go there now and have a place to stay without even having to ask. I am as haole as they come, but I could go to the west side of Oahu to Wianiai where I was told they don't like white people over there. After making friends with some of the local people, they took me over there to a beach party. I was nervous because of all the horror stories I heard. I was respectful and didn't act like a moron and was accepted like I lived there my whole life. I could go there right now and walk in like nothing I am sure. As long as you were respectful they would treat you like their own family. I loved it over there. I miss it so much.

    Love the comments below wondering how folks could actually dislike this obviously joyful collaboration of voices. I don’t speak Hawaiian but know they sing of honoring the special place that is Hawaii and how preserving the music, cultures and traditions is imperative to maintaining this place where spirit oozes from the earth and the sea. The word AINA speaks not just of the land, but more to the spiritual connectivity, or symbiosis, of the land and it’s’ peoples. Personally, all I need to is to hear a little slack key guitar riff, the rhythm of the ipus, or the prayer-like chant announcing the hula story that will unfold and I am all thumbs up

Not many people in the United States know of this crime that the USA stole the Hawaiian Islands except for some members of the congress who know & some head of the Military who know well that all of this is proceeding in the International courts that the USA has no jurisdictions because Hawaii was a Kingdom with a monarchy who had treaties with the major powers of that time period. There is a book called "A Kingdom stolen"

      Udui1o1 yes. this was not right. but you must understand this is how the world works. if that country is stronger, then they reign. survival of the fittest. even though it wasn't right, it was bound to happen anyway. you have to look on the positive side and think about how much amenities we wouldn't have right now that were provided to us from foreign countries. also we could've been taken over by a more oppressive country like Russia. then the Hawaiian culture would probably be totally dead. you have to be thankful for what we have. don't hold grudges against these "haole" people. the Hawaiian people were the same way as these westerners. they took each other over in battle. just not in as large of a scale

    • @udui1o173
      @udui1o173 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I agree with you however the truth must always be told about how it happened. I myself having Caucasian ancestry can surely talk about it. I do understand that all countries have done this to their neighbors and to their own people. Remember the Pope in medieval times gave permission to Spain one of the world powers to take over the western hemisphere while Portugal take over the East. Because the Pope says so does it give them the right to do so and in the name of God? Many of the indigenous people of the world have suffered because of the imperialist attitude. The Ryukyu kingdom Okinawa has the same mirrored history as Hawaii when the Japanese overthrew their kingdom. Till today Hawaii has not solved the problem with the USA. Prof. Keanu Sai at the UH has gone to the Netherlands with others to have Hawaii's plight heard. So much more info. and things to learn.........

    WOW!!! I hardly ever say hewa, but having an ad for Na'i Aupuni before Kaulana Na Pua is the most HEWA! This song was written OPPOSING the Annexation of Hawaii to the United States. The great wrong that was done to our people and our Queen! My father Kihei Soli Niheu helped to revive this song in the 1970's during the protest of the mass evictions occuring all across the islands of Kanaka... one of the most notable in KALAMA VALLEY where Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate were party to the destruction and eviction of a farming community to create a middle class suburb. Although it became known as the birthplace of the Hawaiian Renaissance, it also has deep, deep roots in incredible injustice, where a few choose profit over community.

After looking up the meaning of the words, I find myself overtaken with emotion esp. in light of the recent compounded tragedies of the fires in Maui. The words to this song are as resonant today as they were when they were first penned. It is my fervent hope that the people of Hawaii can one day soon have control over their homeland and that all the avaricious colonialists would be driven away.

    My passport says Australian, as I am proudly Australian born and bred. But I feel a deep connection to the Kanaka Maoli of Hawai'i as I have Polynesian blood running through my veins and I have visited Hawai'i four times so far --- all four main Islands .
    I'm only partial Polynesian heritage through a paternal grandmother however Polynesian/ Pacific Islander people are connected by blood , heritage , kinship and the waters of the Pacific .
    We are not separated by water , distance or politics , but connected by the ocean highways of the Pacific and a common Pacific culture !

    I am from the Philippines and some of my relatives live and work in Hawai'i. I know the struggles and the pains for the islands were occupied, the natives are being driven out from their sacred lands, and their livelihood in peril because of unfair trade and corporate greed. Here in the Philippines, we suffer the same. We're being ruled by bureaucrats protecting only corporate interests and very much willing to sell every piece of property and natural resources to big conglomerates. My heart goes with you. Aloha!

This is a reminder that they are all keiki o ka aina! (Children of the land). They are all preserving the traditions of Hawaii for generations to come!
