I just finished doing a complete paint correction followed by coating with the hydro slick. I found that if you wait the 2 minutes to give product time to become drier it became easier to remove like a wax. If it still had any wetness to it at all it would smear. I also tried using less product on another vehicle but doing multiple coats and it did not give any better results. I recommend using the 4x3 inch applicator with 6 3/8th inch dots of product and allowing 2-3 minutes to dry then buff off. One thing I did notice too is the microfiber will become damp if you buff off too soon and product is still too wet leading to the smearing as well.

I am by no means a paid advocate of Chemical Guys, but I have been using a variety of their products in my detailing service for about 7 yrs now. I am a fan of their soaps, the hex logic quantum pads, pad conditioner and wipe out spray. I dont like some of the polish they offer, some of the sealants, and some of the waxes.
I have used this hydro slick stuff on 5 vehicles now with great results. I have varied the curing time based on ambient temperatures from 30 seconds to 1 minute tops. I learned putting on too much and waiting too long gets the result you experienced.
I also saw the results on a client vehicle that got rained on the next day. Water beading was much better than your video and it dried itself with no water spots.
I have a third of a bottle remaining after doing 5 vehicles, pretty decent bang for the buck.

I’ve run my detailing business four years now. I trialed last season with our personal vehicles. I use this full time now (with other products) for the business. I love the results. Things I have noticed with Hydro Slick. Less is better, very difficult to see once applied, can be a bear to remove if not quick and over applied. Hydrophobic properties are very good. Using a bottle as shown I can easily coat 15 vehicles, probably more.

Yeah he also laid the product down suuuper thick. Which is why it is so hard to remove. There is nothing you should put on your paint that you're supposed to lay down so thick. Wax, ceramic coatings, ceramic sprays, sealants, fusso coat (one that is super hard to remove if you lay it too thick), all of them need to be put down thin. So he looks amateur. Especially given the fact that this is one of those long term coatings, that will absolutely be hard to remove if too much is used. SMH.

The difficulty with the hazing you get is from lack of proper prep... you need a good wash, clay and polish prior to remove imperfections first. Otherwise it gums up, it actually comes off really easy if done correctly

I have also been detailing for 30 plus years and have used this exact product on over 30 cars, I have had the same problem on a similar colour, dark grey, almost black car, I realized i had not got all the road grime off when I washed the car. I washed again with a stronger soap mix 3 0z (Mr Pink) with a bit of degreaser cut 50/50 with water as a cutting agent sprayed just before the soap cannon, hard to see road grime on a black car, use a white microfiber cloth and watch for black on the cloth.

Issues I am seeing with this review, your using Far too much material, your applying it too slowly, your waiting too long to remove the excess material, and the surface in which your applying is not properly prepped.
    Tips.
1- Prep the surface, there is no point in applying anything to the surface if the paint isn't prepped.
2- Use less material, 1 small line should be all you need for a section. Do not use a sh!t ton, a little goes a long ways with this coating.
3- Apply it quickly within the 2 min period, the moment your applying it is the time you start counting down until you need to wipe off the excess. Waiting until it becomes tacky is not ideal, and is also the reason most likely that you had issues wiping it off.
4- Wait the full cure period, this not waiting for the sake of a video just makes you look impatient and inexperienced.
Your get your best results by following the directions and properly prepping the paint, paint prep is the most important step, as it dictates the overall end result of the whole process.

I used this product last year , but i had 3 bottles the chemical guy kit . includes first step , car wax soap , washed the truck , then wiped it dry with a micro fiber towel , then used the neutralizer to wash it again wiped it clean . prepping it for the wax , this part was all done in the sun , then by that time i moved the truck into the shade , let it cooled down then i used the hydro slick gel wax and wax the whole truck . took me like 15 minutes to apply all the wax from bumper to bumper , Then removed it and rubbing it with love . lol ... let it sat all night and next morning Miraculous shine . all i can say , it went threw many elements in the past year fall winter salt ice , work at a Concrete factory the dust of that is not forgiving , and still today i just wash it with the chemical guy wax and soap , still glitters and responded has it was just put on . know I'm in process of Testing it on my Cement truck .

Used and tested it twice. But always after polish or compound, wash, clay bar, and using a good panel wipe(in this case, Gyeon prep), and using the proper dwell time for the temperature and letting it bond for about 12 to 24 hours. Have had ZERO issues. Product so far is ad advertised. Currently have about 2 months on it and it is just as hydrophobic and glossy as the day I applied it. The only issues I have ever seen from the ones I know who have tried it is not using the final panel wipe that is necessary before ANY sio2 coating and not clay barring/prepping correctly. Complaints of smearing, etc. Zero issues if applied as stated in my comment. Solid product. Looks like I'm on track to get at least 6 to 8 months on a daily driver that parks outside.

Put it on WAY thinner than this guy did, wipe it off after a couple of minutes. Easy as can be. He put it on probably 4x too thick, so yeah, wiping off a non dried thick gel won't be easy....

So to me it looks like you used too much product, and you worked it in for too long. So even though you only waited 30-60 seconds, it had already been curing while you were working it in. And you really only need two or three small dots of product.
Try treating it like a wax. Just quickly apply a small amount in a crosshatch, wait 30 seconds, and quickly buff off with a new microfiber towel.

I found that it was easier to apply if I applied it like a wax...sliding it one way and then the other created an uneven layer for me that dried unevenly and was difficult to remove, when I lightly circled across the product like I would a wax, it broke down a bit and made it spread more evenly...the gel itself evened out to the point where when it dried....it was extremely easy to take off. The shine is really something once buffed. Overall this product performed very well once I started applying it this way.

Same experience on a brand new black 4Runner; hand wash and dry, clay bar, polish with buffer, LIGHT coat of hydroslick. So hard to come off. 20 years of at-home detailing experience. May be differences with paint that cause the mixed reviews. Carnuba with buffer for the win.
OR..........is it supposed to be a jelly? Should it be a liquid and we've gotten bad bottles of product? I'm not buying more to find out.

  • @_chex

I think it has to do with what was done prior to the HydroSlick. I had a hell of a time getting mine completely off as it felt like I was exfoliating a layer of dead dry skin. I did all different combos of 30, 60, 120 secs and thin to almost none-existent coats. Still hardened. Granted this was in my garage in shade but in 60% humidity at 90° - so not sure if the temp was the culprit. My surface did have a ceramic coat done to it months prior, which may have contributed to a different “bond”.
Doing on a non-ceramic coated surface and just wash, clay, simple polish it was much easier to remove.

Ok. I know this was 2 years ago but you're supposed to leave it on for 30 seconds to five minutes depending on conditions for it to actually settle on to the car. Then it's way easier to wipe off and then let it cure for 12 hours to get the hydrophobic properties to work properly.

I used it and I seriously had no issue with it at all. I waited about 90 sec b4 I removed it. Came off without any problems. Might be the amount used. I don’t know. About 36 hours later the car was dusty. It is not garage kept. I hosed the car off. Did not have to wash it. Just dried it off. Not saying everyone’s complaints aren’t legit, I just have that same experience.

When I first researched this, the most common issue I found was how hard it was to remove. I bought it and have used it and did not find any issue removing it. It flashed well, and was about the same as anything else I have used. I would say either, the prep of where you applied it was maybe not correctly done, maybe there were still some contaminates. And also, maybe you used too much product. Again, I did not have any issues when using it and it did give me a great finish at the end.

I’m using Hydro slick right now, I’m not having any of the problems that you are having. I’m applying it to my wife’s brand new 2020 Ford Explorer .
I’m new at this I am not a pro by any means. One thing that I noticed when I was wiping it off I started with terry cloth towels. It was smearing all over the place. Then I remembered I bought those expensive microfiber towels at detail garage Detroit. I absolutely could not believe the difference. I was hesitant when I bought them, It’s funny because I own a hardware store. I sell an expensive Mystic Maid microfiber towel that my commercial cleaning crews swear by. To be honest I never tried one. Now I know! It took that greasy stuff off and removed it effortlessly. I had also bought some cheap microfiber towels at Costco huge bag, Very cheap. They were like using the terrycloth towels. I don’t know about the longevity of the Hydro slack but I have to say it was the easiest to apply and once I use the microfiber towel easiest to remove wax that I’ve used. I will check back in a few months and let you know how it lasts. Thanks for your channel

Would applying a liquid based ceramic coating in a spritz help with removing the Hydraslick? Provides the benefit of the gel based coating but some liquid base to help remove. I do the same thing when removing claybar residue, apply quick detailerntonhelp provide lubrication during removal and absorb into the microfiber cloth.

Way too many comments for me to review but I’m guessing maybe you didn’t let it sit long enough to flash off or maybe it’s because the surface wasn’t prepped properly after you polished. I just used this for the first time on my bike and had no issues removing it. It was hot and humid so it flashed off pretty quickly. I did notice it was a little harder to buff out when I let it sit a little too long on one area.

I used this on my red jeep jk. I had no issues. However, I used a cutting compound and polish compound before hand on a different date. The day I decided to apply the hydro slick I clayed my jeep before applying hydro slick. The product went on beautifully and came off with no issues. I did not encounter any sort of thickening like you did. I left it on for 2 minutes at a time. It was literally like applying a transparent wax. I let it cure per the directions and dirt and water simply slide right off. Going on day 5 since applying the product. I think the issue may be contaminants reacting with the product. I think claying the surface is an absolute must for this product to ensure best results.
