Arrowhead hunting TN - The new spot strikes again!

  • A few last finds from April and some from May. The first point up is a beautiful piece made out of some awesome looking Dover chert. I have 3 artifacts in this video that I was hoping I could get some input on. 3 hourglass shaped slate pieces, all found in 1 spot, and only found in that spot. Over the years I've found 20+ of these all from this particular spot. Any thoughts on them would be appreciated! The last artifact in the video and the little drill were both found on the same day, 6' apart from each other, all from the newfound spot that has produced the highlight pieces in my last few videos. There aren't many rocks at this new spot so I'm excited to see all that comes out of it, hopefully unbroken from the lack of rocks! Thanks for watching! Please subscribe if you haven't done so yet and hit the bell to get notified when a new video gets posted!

    I am certainly no expert and others have said those notched pieces might be fishing net weights. What first came to my mind is they may have been used like a spoke shave to round up arrow shafts. I have a well made blade that has a notch in it similar to those and I am almost sure that is what it was used for. In any case, super nice artifacts!! I love watching your videos.

    Salut my Friend,
    How are you? I do hope you and yours have been well! ....though I can see for myself; you are quite able to walk the water's steep edge, and then; your eyes are still keen as ever! And again, another collection of your memories, and you presenting them brings everyone such joy! So surely, you must where a grin nine days out of ten, merely for knowing how to hunt your locations! Whatever you are doing, the results are admirable! Be assured, I'm well aware that you put in the time; walking those long uneven miles, shows both your work ethic and dedication to your passion!
    Every artifact, uniquely beautiful, e ey one! ....and I am all the more happier because you are THE ONE that found them!

It was either a whole net that they lost, or they just used that same spot all the time. Still an awesome find. Like comments below, those slate pieces area likely net or casting weights. Out west we have massive dry lakes in the desert with ancient terraces & shorelines that you can walk for days & miles and maybe find a spot or two with some flint or chert waste flakes, a chopper., scraper or point once in a while, but there are many- many the same slate net weights you found along the river, only found on many different dry lake terraces ancient shorelines 100 miles from the closest body of water, the weights tend to be much larger and a little more hourglass shaped. I saw a massive collection of net weights over in Nevada once, many were huge & weighted up to 1/2 pound each, others small from casting nets. Interesting that in that Pleistoscene epoch The lake called Lake Lahotan had trout were estimated to be at least 60+ pounds 8-10ks years ago when the lake was full & covered 100's of square miles after the last ice age.. The indigenous people must have had some serious nets and weights as well as well tule/bullrush built watercraft in order to catch those deep water trout with nets, Hard to imagine having 5 or 6- 60 pound trout in one net and haul it up from 100' depth. Pyramid lake is all that's left today, Lahotan trout still get up to 20-30 pounds in the puddle that s left from of that massive pleistoscene lake, The Great Salt lake, and many other dry lakes in Nevada, S/E Oregon and Eastern California were all once a massive interconnected fresh water lake..

      More amazing info on your area out there! That’s wild to think about how different the landscape was back then. It’s hard to wrap your mind around it. No doubt most parts of the world would be unrecognizable! I also find it amazing when artifacts are found so far off the coast. Like the artifacts found 60 miles off the coast of Chesapeake bay. Mind blowing!

    Man, what a bonanza! Then finished off with a killer Scottsbluff.
    The slate pieces are shaped just like net weights i find around here. Some i find are slate, seems they used what was handy here. Sandstone is more common then any.

    Hello, you never surprise me, the finds are consistently outstanding! And another thought, now and in the preceding years the American worker for many reasons(a large debate, even daily)has got away from working with his or her hands,in the home and in the field. I look at the craftsmanship you display, and think a culture is only as successful when all participate in living with pride, developing a history that future generations wonder”they were a great people.”

      Thanks buddy! I’d be happy to find anything here lately, quality or not! Haha I’ve had a bit of a dry spell here lately, but I managed to find enough for a video to come out this week. But agreed with your statement.. it’s been looked down upon for a while now, the notion that manual labor is to be looked down upon. When the livelihood of us all, including those who look down upon them, is reliant on their labors. The lives of the Native people were no doubt hard beyond most peoples belief, yet were able to accomplish so much as I can imagine with a smile on their face.

    Super killers again!!! Love em all!! What are you calling that last point?? I’d say those chipped bow tie pieces are some type of net weights. The net weights we find here in PA on the Ohio are larger river cobble some are flat rock with just a chip off each side for tying material to, they didn’t spend much time making these but I have a large one in the shape of a bow tie about 8” long. Great saves as always!!!

    • @Points365

      Thanks buddy! Your net weight guess is in line with the consensus that has made a guess as to what it is. Thanks for the input! That last piece I’ve been calling an elk river. It’s flaking to me is a dead give away. But I’m sure if you asked 5 other people you’d get 4 different answers! Haha But geez man, that large weight you found sound impressive to say the least!

    Great spot. The side notch ones might be net weights except for the use wear on one end. I think they are wood working tools including the one made from a spall. It also has damage on the base end. Also with the drill makes this probably a wood working site. In my opinion.

    Great finds as usual brother! I would lean towards net weights for a casting net. I get that same slate around here, and it's light enough and heavy enough to be used for net weights. Congrats and as always good luck on the next!

    • @Points365
      @Points365  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man! Most people by far have thought net weight, but until I read your comment, I really had trouble understanding how a light material such as slate would be used as a weight. But when you put it into perspective as a casting net where it had to be light enough to cast, yet heavy enough to sink a net, it finally made sense! Thanks for dumbing it down for me! Haha I appreciate the input and for you taking the time as always to check it out!
