  • Setting up a multi camera stream or broadcast has always been complicated and expensive…until now! I recently got the Blackmagic ATEM Mini and it’s been a huge help for live streaming, podcasting, and teaching my high school digital media classes on line.
    I wanted to share why I think this is such an awesome tool and show you how I incorporate it into my workflow every day.

    For 3 years I was working with the ATEM 1 4k - it's a beast but it too needed all the inputs to be the same or it just didn't want to work. Frustrating but once it was up, it was good. BMD announced the ATEM Mini Pro ISO - it adds recording of up to 5 separate H.264 video streams. I am leaning to the Pro mainly because of the Multi-view - I really liked it on the ATEM 1. Thanks Tom for the walk-thru on this!

    Absolutely love my ATEM Mini. It has been one of the best pieces of equipment that I purchased for my mobile streaming setup. So much power and versatility for (relatively) little money. The only thing that would make it better for me is multiview. But this coupled to a Video Assist 12g and Ecamm Live Pro is crazy powerful.
    And I completely agree with you about the lack of power button. Don’t understand that decision as there is a ton of space for a power switch.

  • @henrihelvetica5835
    @henrihelvetica5835 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    No idea how this popped into my feed but glad it did. It’s making me think a bit more as I slowly assemble a streaming / presentation environment. Since it outputs in 1080p only, are you capping your inputs at that resolution? How is it on heat dissipation? My only worry is using this w/ a MacBook Air. I have a late model but I worry about processor intensive accessories and the dropped frames... anyhow, on an info level, this video has been top shelf. Thank you! ✅

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you're here! I can't say specifically about how it'd work with a MacBook Air, but in general, if your streaming apps are running ok now, it should be fine. The computer sees the ATEM as a webcam, so I don't think there's a lot of processing power there. The ATEM does have built in fans to help with the heat. I have mine on 7 or 8 hours a day 5 days a week with no issues.

Linked 3 computers catching different zoom screens when were fed to obs where different scenes were created using obs and the obs out put again wemt to zoom as virtual webcam as an input for all in the meeting to see with all effects and also streamed from to zoom to youtube and fb via restream.. Great video 😀
    Combine it with Elgato Stream Deck, Companion and macros, you have a really powerful setup.
    I operate my ATEM Mini Pro, only from my Stream Deck.
    I have a button, when I start a “show” that will switch to cam 1, , activate my mic, put my computer on preview, start recording, and after 5 sec. put a lower third on screen.
    When I end the show, I have another button that will switch to a still with my logo, fade out the audio, and after 5 sec. stop the recording.
    I have a Raspberry Pi to playback video, and great transitions, also controlled by macros, operated from the Stream Deck.
    I know it is a lot more advanced, it’s just that I’m a Nerd (also a drummer) 😉

    • @timfenton4943
      @timfenton4943 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Minotaurus007 recording Audio depends upon what kind of event we're working. I usually try to get 3 audio recordings for redundancy. Usually we get 1 USB recording off the the digital console we're using. I usually set up a shotgun mic into a camera and do 1 recording in camera. Lastly I'll usually set up a field recorder as a final back up. If we're using an Atem Mini Pro ISO I also get the main recording as well as the ISO recordings all to a Samsung T5 from the USB out of the Mini Pro.

    Love this review. It is clear you are a teacher with the comprehensive flow of your presentation.
    Questions:
    1. do you find your rodecaster pro redundant in any way (audio-wise of course) to use together with the Atem mini
    2. can you record a streaming session in its entirety and use as a future webinar or presentation
    3. What specifically did you use (item) to be able to turn the Atem on and off
    4. What advantagges would the Atem Mini pro or ISO offer that you feel the Mini doesn't have. In other words why would one consider either of these instead of the A. Mini.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words! Here are a few answers:
      1. Nope, not redundant at all because of how many audio inputs it offers, plus the sound pads!
      2. Yes! I've used OBS to record from the Mini, but the ATEM Mini Pro gives you the option to record directly to an attached USB drive.
      3. These are the ones I ordered: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JW5SDZD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
      4. The higher end models offer mulitview output, the ability to record as mentioned earlier, and a few other "pro" features. They're awesome- I just didn't need them for my workflow and wanted to keep things as simple/inexpensive as possible.

    Hey Tom! Another amazing video! I really enjoy your approach and your "pedagogical" methods! lol... I'd love watch a video of how you set up your studio. All the nit and gritty details right down to the connectors, cable management, lighting, sound, and the wonderful wires + connecting hardware needed. I'm in the process of massively leveling up my home office/ studio currently. Your videos are very helpful along with a handful of others I'm watching too. Of all of them, I really love your approach and style. Probably one of the reasons your channel has explosive growth! Anyhow... Hopefully you'll get a chance to read this comment and prepare a video on the studio topic. To be honest, it does get a bit confusing and then frustrating when the gear doesn't work out just the right way. Case in point... Lighting options and getting the right gear (regardless of price) to get the correct temperature, depth of field, and intensity. For sound, I bought the rodecaster pro after watching your video. Now looking at the Atem mini. It sounds like you'd level up to the Atem Mini Pro, is that right? Now, even more, content ideas about how to set up the systems to get the best sound quality. I also added a Shure SM7B, Rode PodMic, and Sennheiser HMB 300 to my gear list when I purchased the rodecaster pro. I'm going all-in with my content creation in 2021. I'm working on learning as much as possible to crush it, just like you. Anyhow... Very long comment. Keep up the great work Tom! I truly appreciate you. =)

      Thank you for the kind words Andrew! I've done a studio tour video, but it doesn't go into all the little tidbits of connectors and whatnot. Maybe that could be a good idea? It might end up being long, but I'm kind of interested in it.
